Manager Self-Service overview Technical system landscape for Manager Self-Service

Overview of the implementation sequence of Manager Self-Service

2.1.1 Manager Self-Service Overview The scenario Manager Self-Service (MSS) provides managers throughout your enterprise

with a set of tools that helps them to accomplish their goals efficiently and effectively. Centraldepartments can make information available in the user’s portal in a personalized way.

MSS empowers managers to execute human capital and finance management strategies forbudgeting, recruitment, compensation, and cost management. Tools that bring thesestrategies to life cut down on the number of phone calls and requests made by managers tovarious departments and, by doing so, free up your Human Resources and Finance staff tofocus on strategic activities. The tools automate paper-based processes, such as requests formaster data changes or performance appraisals. They also leverage Human Resources andFinance back-end systems by making pertinent information available to managers throughoutyour enterprise.

The Business Package MSS consists of various worksets. Worksets are packages containingall the tools and information needed to perform business tasks such as monitoring budgets or

hiring personnel. For example, they contain:iViews

Services

Navigation elements

SAP R/3 and SAP BW reports

Links to internal and external information (Intranet / World Wide Web)

Worksets and iViews are grouped into the areas My Staff and My Budget. My Staff  providesfunctions for tasks that managers perform in connection with their personnel responsibilities. My Budget provides functions for tasks that managers perform in connection with their costcenter or profit center responsibilities.

Software Components

•

•

•

•

LSO 100 Back End – Mandatory

As an installation prerequisite for this component you need a 4.6C R/3 HR system on

which you install the add-on LSO 100 Back End.

The LSO 100 Back End provides you with the Training Management component. Inaddition, the components Personnel Development, HR Master Data, andOrganizational Management are used. The Training Management stores all applicationdata and business functions. This includes, amongst others, course participants’master data, learner account, course catalog, qualification catalog, and detailed dataon the individual courses.

LSOFE 100 Front End – Mandatory

As an installation prerequisite for this component you need a SAP Web ApplicationServer 6.20 on which you install the add-on LSO 100 Front End.

The Web-based Learning Portal provides personalized access to the information and

functions that the learner requires daily. The Learning Portal Front End provides theappropriate portal for the learner. The Learning Portal is based on BSPs. The SAP R/3communicates with the SAP Web AS using RFCs, and provides the dynamic content of the Business Server Pages (BSPs). The LSO 100 add-on contains the functions for theSAP Learning Solution. If you would like to run the Learning Portal in an SAP EnterprisePortal, you must include the iView from the Learner Business Package. You candownload the iView from the iView Studio.

LSOCP 100 Content Player – Mandatory

The Content Player is a server application that enables you to process the learningcontent on the particular client PC. The Learning Portal provides the Content Playerwith an appropriate URL, which contains the Content Management (CM) path andadditional information (such as the course strategy). The learner account is read in theSAP R/3 system to determine the course status before the learner starts with thelearning unit. When the learner has finished playing the learning unit, the ContentPlayer saves the current course status in the learner account.

You may have to install plug-ins in addition to an Internet browser to be able to use thelearning unit, depending on the sort of content you would like to process.

From a technical perspective, the Content Player is based on J ava Server Pages. Ituses SAP’s own J 2EE Engine, which is integrated in the SAP Web AS, as the ServletEngine. The LSOCP 100 add-on is installed on the SAP Web AS using the SoftwareDelivery Manager (SDM). For communication with SAP R/3 the Content Player usesthe SAP J ava Connector (JCo) of the SAP R/3 back end.

LSOAE 100 Authoring Environment – Mandatory

The Authoring Environment is used to develop courses. It combines several tools thatprovide the functions for structuring (Instructional Design Editor), editing (InstructionalElement Editor, Test Author), and testing (integrated Content Player) course content. Itis installed locally on your PC. You can use the Authoring Environment offline on yourlocal PC, and online through direct data exchange between the Publisher Database(SAP R/3) and the central Content Repository (CM or WebDAV server). When youcheck in the contents, the Publisher Database in the SAP R/3 back end system isprovided with data.

The Authoring Environment is a J ava application and requires the J ava DevelopmentKit (J DK). The integrated Offline Content Player uses the open source component J o!as the Servlet Engine. Despite the platform independence of J ava, the AuthoringEnvironment is only delivered and supported on MS Windows (Windows 2000,

Windows NT 4.0, Windows XP) for the time being.

2 mySAP Human Resources Overview

Following the authoring process for creating courses, authors first create course filesdecentrally in a local repository. You need to configure the local repository of theAuthoring Environment accordingly. The learning net, learning object, and instructionalelement are provided locally with a property file, which contains meta data (forexample, status, author, unique ID, and creation date). You can change the courseslocally as long as they are checked into the master repository. You do so by setting upan online connection to the CM or WebDAV server (HTTP). When you release thecontent for reuse, an entry is also made in the Publisher Database in the SAP R/3 backend system using RFC. You can use the Repository Explorer as the user interface tothe master repository.

•  Content Management System - mandatory

The Content Management (CM), which is integrated in the SAP Enterprise Portal, serves as a repository for storing and managing static course content. The CM systemsaves extensive attributes to the content files, which can be searched (using tools like TREX).

The Content Management system must have the functions of a WebDAV server.

If you do not want to use the Content Management system from SAP Enterprise Portal, you can instead use a WebDAV-compatible Web server such as Apache WebDAV-Server (Version 1.3.23) or Microsoft IIS (Version 5.0) as the repository.

A WebDAV-compatible Web server heavily restricts the functions of savingmeta data and searching. Therefore, you should only use it as contentrepository if absolutely necessary.

•

•

SAP Enterprise Portal 5.0 – Optional

You access the Learning Portal using Web browsers. You can access the BSP with theappropriate functions as an iView in an existing Enterprise Portal. You can also startthe BSP by entering the URL directly into the Web browser. This option is important if you do not want to implement the Enterprise Portal or would like to use a differentportal.

SAP Text Retrieval and Information Extraction (TREX) – Optional

TREX helps you to find course content from the Authoring Environment more easilyand can be installed additionally. It will, however, only work with the contentmanagement of SAP Enterprise Portal. If you are using some other WebDAV server, you will have to use a different search tool.

3 Software Components Overview

3 Software Components Overview This section provides additional information about the most important mySAP HumanResources software components.

Only a subset of these components is required for the installation of a specificbusiness scenario. For a scenario-specific overview of components, see thesection Business Scenario Overview.

3.1 SAP Components

3.1.1 Application ComponentsSAP Web Application Server

Definition

SAP Web Application Server (SAP Web AS) provides the technological foundation for allother mySAP Business Suite components. In a sense, SAP Web Application Server is the"operating system" of mySAP Business Suite. Until SAP R/3 4.6D, SAP Web ApplicationServer was named SAP Basis.

In the past, SAP Basis was used and shipped exclusively as an integral part of SAP R/3. Thiswas also reflected by the fact that SAP Basis and SAP R/3 had identical release names and

shared Support Packages. With the introduction of mySAP Business Suite, SAP now offers multiple components thatbuild on SAP Web Application Server . As a result, there is no tight naming relation betweenSAP Web Application Server and SAP R/3 any more.

Use

SAP Web Application Server provides a platform for quickly developing and deployingdynamic and collaborative Web applications or other thin-client applications (WAP, PDA, andso on) and includes all proven SAP programming models and technologies. With SAP Web Application Server , SAP natively supports open Internet standards, including such protocolsas HTTP, HTTPS, and SMTP, as well as Internet document standards like HTML and XML.

Open integration capabilities provide access to existing SAP and non-SAP applications. Allintegration facilities supported by SAP are available withSAP Web Application Server . The J ava Connector or the DCOM Connector give ABAP applications access to J ava or .NETcomponents and vice versa. In addition, the Internet Communication Framework (ICF) of SAP Web AS enables ABAP-written programs to process and distribute HTTP requestsdirectly. As a consequence, SAP Web Application Server can serve both as an HTTP serverand client. It serves as an HTTP server for bringing applications to the user via a Webbrowser either directly or via a standard Web server. It serves as an HTTP client to accessother Web applications for collecting information and data. To complete Web connectivity,SAP Web AS provides full support for sending and receiving e-mails via SMTP.

3 Software Components Overview

SAP R/3 and SAP R/3 Enterprise CoreDepending on the scenario, you can use SAP R/3 orSAP R/3 Enterprise Core. SAP R/3Enterprise Core 4.70 is the successor of  SAP R/3 4.6C. It contains mainly the same

functionality but has been optimized as far as performance and Unicode compatibility isconcerned.

SAP R/3 runs on SAP Basis. SAP R/3 Enterprise Core runs on SAP Web Application Server ,which is the successor of SAP Basis.

Depending on the scenario, you can either use only a certain release of SAP R/3 orSAP R/3Enterprise Core, or you might be able to use different releases. However, the lower yourrelease is, the less functionality it offers.

Be aware that certain scenarios require special Support Package levels as prerequisites forinstallation or upgrade.

Unless otherwise specified for a certain scenario, there usually are no special platform anddatabase restrictions.

SAP Enterprise Portal The SAP Enterprise Portal serves as Portal Platform of the technical scenario.

The SAP Enterprise Portal is a new component of mySAP Business Suite. It is the successorproduct to SAP Workplace and the cornerstone of the mySAP Enterprise Portals solution.

The mySAP Enterprise Portals solution is designed to empower people to collaborateeffectively over the Internet on any given task – at any time and from anywhere. As theleading enterprise portal offering in the marketplace today, mySAP Enterprise Portals incorporates both platform technology and portal content in its unique offering. In particular, the mySAP Enterprise Portals solution delivers information available trough Yahoo!. Itprovides both employees and external stakeholders – such as customers, suppliers, businesspartners, or investors – a role-based, central, and secure access point to personalizedinformation, applications, and services available through a single point of entry.

The mySAP Enterprise Portals solution reflects the different requirements of various targetcommunities that a company wants to address and allowing each company to implement itsenterprise portal at its own pace. It comprises:

• The Enterprise Portal that alerts users to relevant business events and provides themwith fast access to information, applications, and services in a role-based, personalized, scalable, and secure environment – regardless of where the content comes from.

• Unification, which supplements the Enterprise Portal. This uses SAP’ patented unification

technology to allow users to Drag&Relate TM

information from disparate sources to help

them solve business problems. This offers end-to-end operational transparency anddecision-making support – from being alerted, to getting the right information to makeappropriate decisions, to having access to the applications, to acting accordingly.

The mySAP Enterprise Portals solution encompasses both the platform technology andcontent to bring life to employee and external communities, incorporating such features asWeb content management, content unification, and multichannel access.

SAP Business Information Warehouse Today’s decision makers urgently need accurate information – a complete and up-to-datepicture of their business and their business environment. However, that information is spread

over a wide variety of platforms and applications throughout the corporate IT structures. Thiscan make obtaining vital facts and figures a complex and time-consuming task.

SAP Business Information Warehouse (SAP BW) is a robust and scalable data warehouse. The reporting tools withinSAP BW offer a quick and easy way to gain access to the

information you need. SAP BW warehouse management tools let you integrate and storedata from sources throughout the organization and beyond – sources that contribute tostrategic analysis and decision making.

SAP BW largely consists of three functional areas:

• Front end

- Report definition and web publishing

- Data analysis in BEx Analyzer and a Web browser plus integration of analyticalapplications into mySAP Enterprise Portals

- Organization of reports

• Administrator’s Workbench

- Data management

- Monitoring

- Scheduling

• Data extraction

- SAP BW extractors in mySAP Business Suite components

- Openness to external systems

- Integration of extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) tools

3.1.3 Technology Components

SAP Internet Transaction Server

Definition

The SAP Internet Transaction Server (SAP ITS) combines existing Internet technology withSAP technology and provides reliable access to SAP functions from the Internet or intranets.

SAP ITS is a mySAP Business Suite technology component. It is a gateway between one ormore Web servers and one or more SAP application servers. Typically, the Web server is anHTTP server, but other protocols such as FTP or Gopher may also be supported.

SAP ITS mainly generates HTML pages and enables end users to interact with different SAPsystems using a Web browser. It also acts as the server component for the SAP GUI for HTML and various application scenarios, such as Manager Self-Service.

The following graphic shows howSAP ITS extends the three-tier client/server architecture of the SAP system for Internet use:

Response

The SAP ITS manages all requests and responses between a Web browser client and anSAP system server.

Use

The conventional method of accessing the SAP system interactively is by using the SAP GUI,which displays SAP transaction screens and allows the user to interact directly with thesystem. It communicates with the SAP system by using a special SAP GUI protocol.

To access the SAP system with a Web browser, you need an additional component to makethe connection between SAP technology (SAP Application Servers, SAP GUI) and Webtechnology (Web servers and browsers). This is accomplished by the SAP ITS. It is merely apresentation front end and does not do any transaction processing itself. Instead, it hands allbusiness processing to the SAP system.

SAP ITS consists of two separate programs: WGate (Web Gateway) and AGate (Application Gateway), which may be on the same host or on separate hosts connected by a TCP/IPnetwork. The graphic below shows the SAP ITS components and the communicationprotocols used between them:

3 Software Components Overview

Definition

SAP R/3 Plug-Ins are add-ons to SAP R/3. They are interfaces that enable the exchange of data between one or several SAP R/3 systems and other mySAP Business Suite components. The SAP R/3 Plug-Ins supply the mySAP Business Suite components with

transaction data and master data in real time. They also make it possible to use mySAPBusiness Suite application components, such as SAP BW orSAP CRM, together with certainmySAP Business Suite industry-specific components. All mySAP Business Suite industry-specific components based on SAP R/3 4.6B or higher SAP R/3 releases also require SAPR/3 Plug-Ins.

SAP R/3 Plug-Ins are shipped with mySAP Business Suite application components (SAP APO, SAP BW, SAP BBP, SAP EBP, SAP CRM, and SAP SEM) and with mySAP BusinessSuite industry-specific components based on SAP R/3 4.6B or higher SAP R/3 releases. Youcan order the most recent SAP R/3 Plug-In releases free of charge or download them fromthe SAP Service Marketplace.

Use

For SAP R/3 3.1I up to 4.5B, there are two versions of each SAP R/3 Plug-In release: A PI version and a PI-A version. For SAP R/3 4.6B and 4.6C, only PI is available.

The PI-A version is a subset of the PI version and contains interfaces for SAP BW and SAPBBP 1.0B. For SAP R/3 3.1I, a PI-A version also supports SAP BBP 2.0B and SAP EBP 3.0,as well as SAP Internet Sales. The PI version supports SAP BW, SAP BBP, SAP EBP, SAP APO, SAP CRM, and SAP SEM.

For SAP R/3 3.1I, the PI versions of the SAP R/3 Plug-In releases modify SAP R/3 standardobjects, so they require Conflict Resolution Transports (CRTs) for their installation. For SAPR/3 4.0B to 4.6C, the PI versions of the SAP R/3 Plug-Ins do not modify SAP R/3 standardobjects.

The PI-A versions of the SAP R/3 Plug-In releases generally do not modify SAP R/3 objects.

Depending on the combination of the SAP R/3 Plug-In release and version and the SAP R/3release, certain SAP R/3 Support Package levels are required to install the SAP R/3 Plug-In.

For more information and for download, see SAP Service Marketplace atser vi ce. sap. com/ r 3- pl ug- i n.

SAP GUIGenerally, the latest release of the SAP GUI software (such as SAP GUI 6.20) can be usedwith all previous mySAP Business Suite component releases. As a result, older SAP systemscan also benefit from the features that are only available in the newer SAP GUI releases, for

example support for Windows XP. The SAP front-end software release must always be at least the same as SAP R/3. Forexample, you cannot use SAP GUI 4.5B with SAP R/3 4.6C.

SAP Java Connector (SAP JCo) The SAP J ava Connector (SAP J Co or J Co) is a toolkit that allows a J ava application tocommunicate with any SAP system. It combines an easy to use API with unprecedentedflexibility and performance. The package supports both, Java to SAP system as well as SAPsystem to Java calls.
