PLAIDS n’ BLUES “RAVIOLI” QUILT ©Paula Doyle-Green Mountain Quilt Studio Page 2 of 8 PLAIDS n’ BLUES “RAVIOLI” QUILT Materials needed: 1- Plaid FLANNEL rotary cut into 6’’ x 6’’ squares 2- Blue DENIM rotary cut into 6’’ x 6’’ squares 3- WADDING/BATTING rotary cut into 5’’ x 5’’ squares 4- Plaid FLANNEL rotary cut with pinking blade into 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” squares for optional appliqué 5- 45mm rotary cutter, equipped with a 45mm pinking blade and a 45mm plain blade 6- Plaids and Blues RAVIOLI ruler (optional, but oh so handy! See bottom page 8) 7- Marking pens that will show on the denim 8- Binding clips 9- Sharp pointed scissors 10- Fabric glue stick 11- Walking foot or even feed foot for you machine 12-Thread in a neutral/dark tone 13- Rotary cutting rulers, if not using the Plaids and Blues RAVIOLI ruler 14- Homemade template for marking denim if not using the Plaids and Blues RAVIOLI ruler

YOU CAN MAKE YOUR Plaids n’ Blues RAVIOLI QUILT ANY SIZE YOU WANT USING 5” X 5” RAVIOLI BLOCKS . THE “HUG” SIZED QUILT shown here (45” X 65”) HAS BEEN MADE USING 117 RAVIOLI BLOCKS, SET 9 BLOCKS X 13 BLOCKS THE “PLAY MAT” SIZE QUILT shown here(30” X 40”) HAS BEEN MADE USING 35 RAVIOLI BLOCKS, SET 5 BLOCKS X 7 BLOCKS, plus an optional 2 1/2” wide border.

MAKING THE “RAVIOLI” BLOCKS: Step 1- Line up the Plaid n’Blues RAVIOLI ruler edge to edge with right side of denim 6” x 6” square. **see alternative ways of marking the denim squares without this ruler page 7

Step 2- Use the template fabric pen or marker to mark the 5”x 5” square and the 2” x 2” square in the centre of the denim square.

For each PLAIDS AND BLUES RAVIOLI BLOCK you will need : One 1 square of denim, rotary cut 6” x 6” One 1 square of flannel , rotary cut 6” x 6” One 1 square of batting/wadding, rotary cut 5” x 5” One 1 square of flannel, rotary cut with pinking blade 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” (optional – see “variations” *** on page 8)

PLAIDS n’ BLUES “RAVIOLI” QUILT ©Paula Doyle-Green Mountain Quilt Studio Page 3 of 8 Step 3- Turn the denim square over, then use the Plaids n’ Blues RAVIOLI ruler to mark the 5” x 5” on the reverse side of the denim square.

Step 4- Apply fabric glue stick near the inside corners of the 5” x 5” square marked on the wrong side of the denim square.

Step 5 – Line up and glue 5” x 5” square of batting/wadding in place.

Step 6 – Line up 6” x 6” square of flannel with the edges and corners of the denim square, and pin at each corner over the batting/wadding.

Step 6 (continued) – The block is now ready to stitch. Stitch the sandwich together from the denim side of the block.

Step 7- Stitch all around 5” x 5” square on marked line, using a walking foot or even feed foot .

Step 8 – Glue 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” square of flannel over the marked 2” x 2” square on the denim side of the block. ** *** variations for quilting/appliqués on page 8

Step 9- Stitch centre 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” flannel square in place using a straight stitch about 1/4” inside the pinked edges.

Step 10- Overstitch about 1” at the end and cut threads. The ravioli block is now ready for trimming with pinking cutter.

Step 11- Line up the stitching line with the white dashed line 1/4” in from the outside edge of the Plaids n’ Blues RAVIOLI template ruler, and trim up with a pinking blade.

Step 12- Trim each raw edge of the block using the pinking cutter. The Ravioli block is now ready to be stitched to other blocks to form the quilt.

PLAIDS n’ BLUES “RAVIOLI” QUILT ©Paula Doyle-Green Mountain Quilt Studio Page 5 of 8 ASSEMBLING THE QUILT: Step 13 – Lay out the RAVIOLI blocks as desired for the quilt (***see examples page 8). Numbering the top block of each row or column (by using a safety pin to attach a number label to the top of blocks) will help you keep each block in the correct position as you piece the blocks together.

Step 14 – Pick up and stack each row/column of RAVIOLI blocks from top to bottom, with the numbered block at the top.

Step 15 – Piece each row/column of blocks together. This is easiest using binding clips to hold the blocks together while stitching. Line the blocks up, clip together about 2” away from each corner, and stitch together, flannel sides of the block together, along the stitching line around the edges of each block. Use a walking foot or even feed foot, a size 80 or 90 needle, and reinforce at the beginning and end of each stitching line by stitching a couple of reverse stitches, and stitching from and onto thread savers at each end.

Step 17 – Stitch the rows/columns together from left to right , flannel sides of the blocks together, in numerical order. Use binding clips to hold the blocks together for stitching, and but up the seam allowances at the corners, with top seam allowance pointed up, and bottom seam allowances downwards so it won’t be kicked up by the feed dogs as you stitch:

PLAIDS n’ BLUES “RAVIOLI” QUILT ©Paula Doyle-Green Mountain Quilt Studio Page 7 of 8 Step 18- Using a pair of sharp pointed scissors, clip the fabrics stitched down at the corners to each point, allowing the seam allowances to be free. Shake the quilt out. The quilt is now ready to be bound and finished unless you wish to add an optional border.

Step 19 –ADDING OPTIONAL BORDERS For 2 1/2” wide finished borders, cut : 2 pieces of denim + 2 pieces flannel , each measuring 3 1/2” wide x width of the quilt + 3” 2 pieces of denim + 2 pieces flannel each measuring 3 1/2” wide x length of the quilt + 3” 2 pieces wadding cut 2 1/2” wide x width of the quilt + 2 1/2” 2 pieces wadding cut 2 1/2” wide x length of the quilt + 2 1/2” Mark 1/2” in from outer edges of the denim pieces, then glue, sandwich, pin, stitch , quilt, then pink all around each of the borders in the same way done for the blocks:

Step 19 - ADDING OPTIONAL BORDERS continued: Stitch the first border to the quilt using a partial seam, then stitch on the other borders , flannel sides together. The last step in adding the borders is to finish the piecing the partial seam .

Step 20- BINDING: Finish your Plaids n’Blues RAVIOLI quilt with 1/2” finished binding all around. The quilts pictured here have been bound with 2 1/2” wide rotary cut strips of fabric, pieced together lengthwise, then folded and pressed in half lengthwise, right sides of fabric outwards.

Lay out *** You can make your quilt any size, and any layout. Here is a small 20” x 25” Plaids n’ Blues RAVIOLI dog quilt , made using 20 of the RAVIOLI blocks set 4 x 5 blocks, with a totally random layout placement of the blocks: Denim side of small dog quilt:

Lay out *** continued: If you want to plan a layout pattern for your blocks: - layout the 6”denim squares first (forming the layout pattern for the denim side of the quilt) and any appliqués planned for the centres of the denim squares ( 2 1/2” flannel squares) - next, pair each denim square with a 6”flannel square (forming the layout pattern for the flannel side of the quilt). The simplest way to plan a layout for your blocks is to use graph paper or a quilt design software, such as Electric Quilt , to shade or colour a placement diagram for each side of the quilt.
