What Is a Settlement?

A Settlement is a place where people live. The function of a settlement is why it was built. Different types of settlement have different types of functions. A site of a settlement is where it was built. There are also different settlement patterns which are nucleated, dispersed and linear.

NEW YORK

What are the changes in New York? In these 5 slides, I will talk about the changes in New York settlement!

Page 5: Humanity ppt

New York in 1900s

In the 1900s of New York, there were not any cars and as you can see, there are horses that give people transportation. So, the transportation was not very good. In some places, there were not a lot of people. The buildings are big and not very much. There weren’t very much action happening around. I think this is a nucleated settlement because the houses were crowded together but in some other places, it kind of looks like a linear settlement (ribbon) because it forms a straight line along the roads. This is most likely more of a market town or maybe there might be a industrial town.

Page 6: Humanity ppt

New York in 1900s

In the 1900s, there is a market town in New York. People come here and buy things. People have carts and horses instead of cars and the service is not as good as now. In some parts of the areas, there are a lot of people but not in all places. It also looks like a mixture of nucleated and linear town here because there are many crowds and buildings and if you see further down, the buildings are formed in a line.

Page 7: Humanity ppt

New York in 1950s

Here, you can see that there are a few cars on the roads and the people there became fewer. It looks like people there are going to jobs and they are getting busier and busier. Still, New York is a nucleated and linear town because the roads are like a line but there are also shops and factories close together with lots of buildings and cars close together but things are knocked down a lot. I think market towns are getting knocked down and industrial towns are built.

Page 8: Humanity ppt

New York in 1950

In the 1950s, technology grows and cars appear. Although, there are not a lot of cars, there are a few here and there. More and more buildings are being built but it seems like that there were fewer people. There are roads and more advertising and more shops and factories are being built.

Page 9: Humanity ppt

New York in 2000

Now New York has developed a lot and more factories and shops are built. The town is getting busier! This looks like a nucleated town because if you see closely, the cars and buildings are all close together and squeezed together. So, you can see that New York hasBecome more nucleated over time.

Page 10: Humanity ppt

What Are The Changes?

From the time 1900s to the 2000s in New York, it was all a Nucleated ( a little bit linear) settlement but the people and technology there grows. Before the functions there was Market town but now, there are industrial towns, resort, and more. The service there are better and the transportation there is faster.

PARIS

What are the changes in Paris? In these 5 slides, I will talk about the changes in the Paris settlement!

Page 12: Humanity ppt

Paris in 1900

This is Paris in 1900. There isn’t a lot of people and there is a lot of open space. Still, I think it is nucleated but in a way of more spread out because the houses are still together. I also think this is pretty much like a linear settlement because the road is going in a straight direction.

Page 13: Humanity ppt

Paris in 1950

Here, we can definitely see that houses and buildings are built more and more and the roads and open spaces are smaller. It is a nucleated settlement because they are all gathered around. It can also be linear settlement but it is most likely to be a nucleated settlement. I think there are industrials and shops are here.

Page 14: Humanity ppt

Paris in 2000Wow! Now Paris is a very nucleated town! Houses, roads, apartments, buildings are all squished together. Many functions are developed here!I think this is probably the Central Business District (CBD). I think thisis a market, resort and industrialTown. The reason is because there Are many buildings so there must be Industry and there are lights and towers to make it look like a resort Town.

Page 15: Humanity ppt

What Are The Changes?

The changes in 100 years in Paris are that first, there was lots of open space and the people were few- it looked like a nucleated settlement with all the houses on the side of the road but it also looked like a linear settlement going down the road. Then, in 1950s, the settlement became more crowded and it looks like a nucleated settlement with shops, market towns, and also industrial towns. Finally in 2000s, all the car, houses, roads and buildings develops a lot ad there is a resort town because of all the lights.

London

What are the changes in London? In these 5 slides, I will talk about the changes in the Paris settlement!

Page 17: Humanity ppt

London in 1900

This is London in the 1900. You can see that the population is small but there are big houses with lots of space on the road. I think that isBecause the houses are big and many people can not afford to live in them.I am also guessing that it is winter so not much action is happening but I Think it is a nucleated settlement because there are houses on both sides And it might even be a linear settlement.

Page 18: Humanity ppt

London in 1950

As this nucleated settlement has developed much more, shops and hotels are built. The trees are being cut down too.You can see that the roads are wider, more people are here to buyAnd shop things. I think industrial and market towns are growing because you can see large buildings and shops. If you look further down the road, you can see that it forms a straight line so it can also be a linear settlement.

Page 19: Humanity ppt

London in 2000

This is definitely a nucleated settlement. The buildings are all squished Together tightly and there are lots of light so at the same time, it can be a Resort town. A resort town is a place where people go on holidays. As you Can see on the up right corner of the picture, there is a bridge and water soThere is a port.

Page 20: Humanity ppt

London in 2000

This place is definitely a resort town because there are beautifulPlaces that tourist can go to to see lights an the London bridge. There Can also be a port to send things in and out (import, export) because Ports send things over sea.

Page 21: Humanity ppt

What Are The Changes?

First in the 1900s, the people were very few but the roads were very big – there wasn’t very much happening around. In 1950s, there are bands performing and more people seems to arrive. I think it was a nucleated settlement. There are more and more shop. Finally in the year 2000s, shops, industrials, cars, appear. The roads are thinner and the settlement grows. There is also a port and the port is also a resort town. Many things developed.
