WE OPEN TO THE TRIBUTES IN THEIR INDIVIDUAL SCORING SESSIONS. AS WE SEE EACH PERSON WE HEAR THEIR NAMES AND THEIR SCORES CALLED OUT, IN THE RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE SCREEN A SEMI FADED PICTURE OF THE TRIBUTE ACCOMPANIES THEIR SCORE AS WE SEE WHAT WEAPON THEY USE AND HOW WELL THEY USE IT. SCREEN GOES BLACK ­ WORDS APPEAR “From the treaty of the treason: In penance for their uprising each district shall offer up a male and female between the ages of 12 and 18 at a public reaping. These tributes shall be delivered to the custody of the Capitol and then transferred to a public arena where they will fight to the death, until a lone victor remains. Henceforth and forevermore this pageant shall be known as ‘The Hunger Games’” ALL OF THE WORDS FADE EXCEPT “THE HUNGER GAMES” “THE” SEPARATES FROM “HUNGER GAMES” AND THE NUMBER 36 FADES IN IN BETWEEN THEM.

“REQUIEM OF SPIRIT (MUSIC BOX)” PLAYS AS WE SEE ALL THE TRIBUTES IN THEIR SEPARATE ROOMS BEFORE GETTING INTO THE TUBES TO BRING THEM UP TO THE ARENA. GRIFFITH IS THE LAST TRIBUTE TO GO INTO THE TUBE, (FORESHADOWING THE ENDING AS HE IS THE LAST TRIBUTE OUT OF THE ARENA AS THE VICTOR) AND AS HE GOES UP THE LAST NOTE PLAYS AND THE SCREEN GOES DARK. CORNUCOPIA SCENE BEGINS THE CAMERA IS AIMED AT THE SUN AND THE SCREEN IS BLINDED BY IT FOR A SECOND THE AIMS DOWN TOWARDS THE CORNUCOPIA. “THE BLOODBATH SCORE” PLAYS, WE SEE CLOSE UPS OF DIFFERENT WEAPONS, THEN THE TRIBUTES FACES, EMOTIONS RANGING FROM CALM, TO SCARED, TO CONFIDENT, TO EVEN BORED. AS THE MUSIC QUEUES IT, THE TRIBUTES ALL START TO RUN, SOME AWAY FROM THE BLOODBATH SOME TOWARDS IT. CHAOS BEGINS. LIANA IS WRESTLING THE DISTRICT 9 BOY FOR A SWORD, IN THE END SHE STABS HIM WITH IT AND THE FIRST TRIBUTE IS KILLED AND THE BLOODBATH HAS OFFICIALLY STARTED. THERE ARE PEOPLE FIGHTING AND KILLING EVERYWHERE. ASTRID GRABS A BAG AND SHOVES IT TOWARDS KALEN, WE SEE HER SCREAMING, “GO! GO!” THEN KALEN IS OFF RUNNING AND ASTRID TURNS TO FACE THE DISTRICT 3 BOY WHO HAS COME UP TO HER WITH A AXE, THE WRESTLE FOR A BIT BEFORE SHE KICKS HIM OFF OF HER AND THE BOY FALLS BACK AND ENDS UP WITH HIS OWN AXE IN HIS CHEST. ASTRID RUNS INTO THE FRAY DUCKING AROUND LAYTON, WHO IS FIGHTING THE DISTRICT 12 GIRL, THE CAMERA STAYS ON LAYTON AS ASTRID

PASSES HER, LAYTON GETS THE UPPERHAND ON DISTRICT 12 AND SLAMS HER HEAD REPEATEDLY INTO A NEARBY ROCK. SHE IS THEN PUSHED OVER BY THE DISTRICT 11 BOY AND HE GOES TO FINISH HER WITH A SWORD BUT AN ARROW SLAMS THROUGH HIS CHEST AND HE DROPS THE SWORD BEFORE HE FALLS ON LAYTON. HE IS THEN SHOVED OFF OF HER BY CAMERON, THE ONE WHO SHOT HIM, AND LAYTON IS HANDED AN AXE, AS THEY STAND LAYTON PUSHES CAMERON TO THE GROUND AND SWINGS THE AXE, KILLING THE DISTRICT 10 BOY SNEAKING UP BEHIND CAMERON. SHE PULLS CAMERON TO HIS FEET AND THE RUN OFF, AS THEY PASS TWO PEOPLE FIGHTING ON THE GROUND LAYTON GRABS A BACKPACK NEXT TO THEM WITHOUT BREAKING A STRIDE. THE CAMERA STAYS ON THE TWO FIGHTING. IT IS GRIFFITH AND THE DISTRICT 6 BOY, GRIFFITH SNAPS HIS NECK THEN PICKS UP AND RUNS OFF. WE SWITCH TO MABEL, SHE IS REPEATEDLY STABBING THE DISTRICT 3 GIRL, WE SEE A BOY RUNNING UP TO HER, IT IS HER DISTRICT PARTNER. HE SEEMS TO BE SHOUTING AT HER AND MOTIONING TO THE BACKPACK (“MABEL! I GOT A PACK, WE SHOULD RUN BEFORE WE GET KILLED!”) MABEL STANDS AND HER AND THE BOY START TO JOG AWAY. WE CUT TO ANDREW AS HE KICKS THE DISTRICT 9 GIRL TO THE GROUND BEFORE SLITTING HER THROAT WITH HIS LONG KNIFE. THEN ASTRID RAMS INTO HIM, HE SWINGS HIS KNIFE BUT SHE DUCKS AND THEY FIGHT FOR A MOMENT, SWINGING PUNCHES AND TRYING TO GET A UPPER HAND. FINALLY ASTRID KICKS ANDREW TO THE GROUND AND RUNS FROM HIM WITHOUT KILLING HIM. WE FOLLOW HER AS SHE IS ALMOST ESCAPING THE CORNUCOPIA BEFORE RUNNING STRAIGHT INTO THE DISTRICT 6 GIRL, SMASHING THEIR HEADS ON THE OTHERS. STARTLED FOR A MOMENT THEY GAIN THEIR FOOTING BACK AND ATTACK EACH OTHER, IT IS CLEAR FROM THE START THAT ASTRID IS THE BETTER FIGHTER AND DESPERATE TO LIVE THE DISTRICT 6 TRIES TO RUN AWAY. ASTRID FLINGS A KNIFE TO HER BACK AND THE GIRL DROPS DEAD NEXT TO GRIFFITH. ASTRID GRABS A PACK AND ANOTHER WEAPON AND TAKES OFF.

GRIFFITH IS FIGHTING THE DISTRICT 5 BOY, AND WINNING, FINALLY HE STABS THE BOY REPEATEDLY AND WALKS AWAY. LIANA IS ON THE GROUND PUNCHING THE DISTRICT 10 GIRL WHO IS ALREADY DEAD. GRIFFITH PULLS HER UP AND NODS HIS HEAD OVER TO THE DISTRICT 4 GIRL, A CAREER LIKE THEM, WHO IS EXAMINING A SWORD BEHIND THE SAFETY OF A ROCK (?). LIANA GRINS AND THEY MOVE TOWARDS HER. GRIFFITH AND LIANA ARE APPROACHING THE DISTRICT 4 GIRL. SHE LOOKS UP AND SEES THEM. SHE SEEMS TO NOT BE WORRIED, ALMOST AS IF SHE THINKS SHE TRUSTS THEM, SHE THINKS THEY ARE IN AN ALLIANCE. LIANA GRABS HER AND HOLDS HER TOWARDS GRIFFITH AND HE WALKS UP WITH A COCKY SMIRK, HE PLACES ONE HAND ON HER SHOULDER AND THE OTHER STABS HER WITH HIS SPEAR. HE TWISTS IT AROUND IN HER STOMACH FOR A MOMENT AS THE LIFE FADES FROM HER EYES. HE THEN WRENCHES THE SPEAR FREE. THEY LET HER DROP TO THE GROUND, DEAD. LIANA TURNS AND THEY SEE ANDREW, HER DISTRICT PARTNER, STANDING THERE. LIANA RAISES AN EYEBROW AT HIM, CHALLENGING HIM TO SAY SOMETHING. INSTEAD ANDREW JUST SHRUGS AND GIVES ONE OF THOSE "I SEE YOU" NODS. GRAB SOME SUPPLIES AND RUN OFF. THE BLOODBATH IS FINISHED. WE CUT TO THE CAREER PACK (LIANA, GRIFFITH, AND ANDREW)

LIANA I still think we should go after that Astrid bitch, how could

she get a higher score than me?!

ANDREW Give it a rest Liana, you’ve been ranting about that for hours.

LIANA

It has not been hours, dick head. Besides, we really should go after her. She betrayed us, we were supposed to be allies!

ANDREW To be fair, she never actually said that…

LIANA

But she is a career, her loyalties should be with us.

ANDREW (snickers) Aren’t you the one who just helped big shot over here kill the District 4 girl? (he pauses for a second, swallowing

like he might want to say something. Instead, he forced a smirk.) She was supposed to be an ally, too.

GRIFFITH Why? So I could just slaughter her in the end anyway? Please. We

go after the easy kills first. Build up the tension for the bigger fights. Make this Hunger Games a show to remember.

ANDREW

Who died and made YOU President Snow?

GRIFFITH SUDDENLY TURNS ON ANDREW, KNIFE TO HIS THROAT.

GRIFFITH Unless you want to end up like your district partner, I'd cut

the act.

ANDREW (Unfazed) Chill dude, just playing around.

GRIFFITH GIVES HIM ONE LAST LOOK BEFORE RELAXING AND WALKING AWAY. ANDREW RAISES HIS EYEBROWS BUT FOLLOWS.

LIANA

(Rolling her eyes) Boys.

WE JOIN CAMERON AND LAYTON. THEY ARE HIKING THROUGH SOME WOODS.

LAYTON I think we’re safe here, it’s gonna get dark soon anyway. We

should set up camp.

CAMERON No, it’s still too close to the lake, if someone gets thirsty

we’re dead.

LAYTON We walked three MILES from the lake, Cameron!

CAMERON I know what I’m doing, Layton! Just follow my lead and try not

to get slaughtered.

WE CUT TO MABEL AND SETH, THEY ARE BY THE RIVER KEEPING WATCH. IT IS EVIDENT THAT SETH WANTS TO SAY SOMETHING, BUT THERE IS A HESITATION HOLDING HIM BACK. MABEL IS CONCENTRATED ON SURVEYING THE AREA, BUT SETH IS MORE DISTRACTED BY EMOTION.

I think we should head out South, i saw something that looked like a cave, we can camp there.

MABEL Or maybe back to the Cornucopia, i know that is a career thing

but maybe they won't do it this year, i mean District 2 completely ditched them and they killed half of 4 so­

THEY WALK OFF, MABEL STORMING QUICKLY AND SETH STRUGGLING TO

KEEP UP BEHIND HER. SCENE FADES. WE SEE FEET RUNNING, HEAR HEAVY BREATHING AND GET GLIMPSES OF A BOY SPRINTING THROUGH THE WOODS. ITS KALEN. HE STOPS AND HUNCHES OVER PLACING HIS HANDS ON HIS KNEES. HE LOOKS AROUND FOR A SECOND AND THEN WE HEAR SOMEONE COMING FAST. HE STARTS RUNNING AGAIN AND THERE ARE SHORT QUICK SHOTS OF THE CAMERA FOLLOWING KALEN, KALEN’S POV, AND HIM RUNNING THROUGH THE TREES. HE SUDDENLY BANGS INTO ANOTHER PERSON, HE TRIES TO CRY OUT BUT A HAND CLAMPS OVER HIS MOUTH AND ANOTHER ARM GRABS HIM AROUND THE WAIST.

UNSEEN PERSON Shut up! Do you want someone to find us? Chill out, little bro. IT’S ASTRID.

KALEN You scared me!

HE HUGS ASTRID TIGHTLY. SHE SIGHS AND HUGS HIM BACK FOR A QUICK SECOND. THEN PULLS AWAY, SWINGING A BAG OFF HER SHOULDER.

ASTRID

Here. I grabbed an extra pack in the cornucopia. It has food, a knife and a sleeping bag in it. I also filled one of my canteens

up with water already for you. ASTRID PUTS THE BAG IN KALEN’S ARMS AND RUFFLES HIS HAIR SLIGHTLY, A SMALL COMFORT TO THE SMALL BOY.

KALEN

(whimpering) Astrid...the bag had blood on it.

ASTRID Okay, so I had to kill a District 6 to get it, so what?

KALEN

Astrid..

ASTRID Listen Kalen, you have to toughen up! This is The Hunger Games, kill or be killed! Take the damn pack and go find shelter down south, away from the cornucopia and lake. There is enough water in the pack to last a few days, then if you walk west a mile,

there is a river, take water from there, nowhere else.

KALEN Wait, how do you know all this? What kind of shelter? I can’t

climb trees, Astrid, you know that. ASTRID TAKES HIS SHOULDERS AND LOOKS HIM DEAD IN THE EYES. HER EXPRESSION FALTERS SLIGHTLY, BUT SHE MAKES AN EFFORT TO HARDEN IT. SHE CLOSES HER EYES TO GATHER WHAT SHE IS GOING TO SAY.

ASTRID

I have my ways Kalen, trust me. There are caves, but don’t use those, other tributes or an animal could be in them. Gather up

branches and build a fort...just like when we were kids remember?

KALEN Yeah, but what if someone finds me?

ASTRID

Kill them.

KALEN (eyes widen, filled with tears and fears) No! I can’t...I won’t!

ASTRID

Then wound them. Fight like hell then run, Kalen. You are the fastest runner in District 2, and probably here. It’s your

strong spot.

KALEN Why can’t you just stay with me?

ASTRID We talked about this Kalen, I can help you better out on my own,

killing the opponents. Your job is to stay alive.

KALEN IS GROWING DESPERATE. HE IS LOSING THE ENTIRE IDEA OF HIS SISTER THAT HE HAS ALWAYS KNOWN AND IDOLIZED. HE DOESN’T RECOGNIZE HER IN THE GAMES.

WE OPEN TO DISTRICT 10 GIRL SCREAMING. LIANA, GRIFFITH AND ANDREW ARE STANDING OVER HER. THE GIRL IS CRYING, MUMBLING, PLEADING THAT THEY SPARE HER. SHE WHIMPERS ABOUT HER FAMILY. LIANA KICKS HER IN THE SIDE UNTIL SHE CAN’T SPEAK. THE GIRL STARTS COUGHING UP BLOOD.

ANDREW

(snickering; sarcastic) Liana, I don’t think you kicked her hard enough! Her organs are still in her chest.

GRIFFITH SPECTATES, EXPRESSIONLESS.

GRIFFITH

Just finish her off, Liana.

ANDREW (rolling his eyes, murmurs) Buzzkill.

LIANA KICKS HER IN THE SKULL AND SHE GOES LIMP. THEY ALL TURN AND WALK AWAY WITHOUT WAITING FOR A CANON TO SOUND, NOT NOTICING WHEN ONE DOESN’T. THE LAST SHOT WE SEE IS THEM WALKING AWAY IN THE DISTANCE AS A HAND TWITCHES. PAN UPWARD TO RUBY, STEALTHY WATCHING FROM THE TREE. SHE HAS BEEN AN UNKNOWN PRESENCE THE ENTIRE TIME. AS THE CAREERS MOVE ON THE FROM THE DEAD BODY, RUBY CLIMBS DOWN FROM THE TREE, TAKES LEFTOVER FOOD, WATER, ETC. FORM THE BODY, AND FOLLOWS THEM QUIETLY. OPEN TO CAMERON AND LAYTON. THEY ARE WALKING THROUGH THE WOODS, AWAY FROM THE WATER. LAYTON IS LOOKING AROUND, ON HER GUARD. CAMERON IS A BIT AHEAD OF HER, SEEMINGLY LEADING.

CAMERON

(calling back to her) Keep up, Layton. We don’t have all day.

LAYTON At least I’m not tramping through the woods like a child just

learning how to walk.

CAMERON Shut it, would you?! I’m risking my own safety to protect you.

LAYTON

(clearly pissed, eyes tearing) I don’t NEED protecting, Cameron. I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself.

CAMERON

(rolling his eyes and snickering) Yeah. Tell that to the tears in your eyes. (he turns around and continues walking)

LAYTON, FILLED TO THE BRINK WITH ANGER, RAISES HER AXE AND SLASHES CAMERON. HE FALLS TO THE GROUND AND GROANS IN AGONY.

LAYTON I’m not a child. I told you I could defend myself. I’m stronger

than I look. Don’t doubt me.

CAMERON’S EYES WIDEN AND HIS FACE FILLS WITH ANGER AS SHE CLUTCHES THE HANDLE OF THE AXE AND PRESSES IT DOWN INTO HIS BACK. THE CANON SOUNDS. THE SCENE FADES AS SHE YANKS THE AXE OUT OF HIS BACK, TAKES HIS BELONGINGS FOR HER OWN, AND CONTINUES ON.

BACK WITH THE CAREERS GRIFFITH AND THROWING HIS SPEAR AT A FAR TREE AS LIANA CHOPS UP BRANCHES WITH HER SWORD. ANDREW LIES ON THE GROUND WHISTLING AND TWIRLING HIS LONG KNIFE. THEY DONT NOTICE AS THE DISTRICT 10 GIRL IS BACK FOR REVENGE. WE HAVE A

FEW CAMERA SHOTS FROM 10’S P.O.V BEFORE SHE LUNGES AT LIANA AND TACKLES HER TO THE GROUND. GRIFFITH AND ANDREW TURN TOWARDS HER

Oh, shit! ANDREW STANDS AND RUNS OVER TO HELP, DISTRICT 10 IS FIGHTING HARD AND THEY ARE HAVING A HARD TIME KILLING HER. FINALLY GRIFFITH STROLLS OVER AND QUICKLY STABS HER WITH THE SPEAR. ROLLING HIS EYES AT THE OTHER TWO SPITTING OUT BLOOD AND NURSING SCRATCHES.

SETH Why not? We have water, shelter and we are hidden. Let’s just

wait it out.

MABEL (getting frustrated) Seth! It’s not about waiting it out, its about winning! It’s about the strategy and the weapons and the

blood on your fingertips! It’s the hunting for food and surviving for yourself. (she digresses) ...It’s being able to go

home and have everyone know that you did something right.

SETH (low whistle) Psycho much? Speaking of home, which one of us is

going home again?

MABEL FALLS SILENT.

SETH See, that shut you up.

The thing about the games, Seth… (she moves closer to him) Is that loyalties. always. lose. (she lifts her hand to show one of

her ninja stars between her fingers) You all have to die eventually. That’s the way of the game…

SEHT SITS UP NOW EYES WIDE. MABEL SHOVES HIM BACK DOWN.

WE SEE ASTRID WALKING ALONG A RIVER WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE DISTRICT 12 BOY STUMBLES OUT OF A BUSH; HE WAS TRYING TO SURPRISE ASTRID AND GET A UPPER HAND ON HER. games, as if my winning would avenge her, as if seeing 23 other people slaughtered would somehow make my sister’s death hurt

less. (she scoffs, angered at her own stupidity) And now here I am, lying on the goddamn forest floor with the blood of my own district partner beneath my fingernails. (her eyes roll back in agony) I’m terrified of dying alone. I should have thought of that before I went and killed everyone that could have cared.

RUBY BEGINS TENDING TO HER WOUNDS, BANDAGING THE BLOODY MESS AS BEST SHE COULD, PROPPING MABEL UP AGAINST A TREE.
