Introduction:

In this survey I am going to talk about Hurricane Kyle. Kyle was the first tropical storm that made it to Canada this season. In this survey we will look at the wind history of Kyle, rainfall, arise of Kyle and last but not least the landfall of Kyle in Canada.

Page 4: Hurricane Kyle

Arise:

Kyle arose out of a tropical wave from the coast of Africa. This wave slowly moved to the Lesser Antilles, where it came in interaction with a strong upper-level through in the eastern Caribbean Sea. This new storm became to show some convection and after crossing the Windward Islands, it became more organised. After a couple of days the storm had developed so much that it increased to a tropical storm at 25 September. Kyle moved further to the north and slowly intensified. After 2 days the new tropical storm had so much increased that the National Hurricane Center had to increase the tropical storm to a hurricane.

To see Kyle’s wind history, I refer to the chapter about wind history.

Wind history:

The wind history is shown in a table here below. The table shows some colours. These colours represent the category of the storm. The colours match the colours that were used in the picture of the hurricane track of Kyle.

As you see here, this is when Hurricane Kyle made landfall to the west coast of Canada. As we see in the picture the purple spots are the highest wind speed. That is round the eye of the storm. The eye is over land, but around the eye is the highest wind gust. The wind speeds in the purple areas are over 50 knots. That is a wind speed of over 90 km/hour. We can also see the wind direction in this picture. You can see in the purple area that the wind direction is like a circle. This represents the eye wall.We see a whole system of a circling wind direction from the eye wall to far off the coast as well.

Rainfall:

As we see here in the picture, a rainfall is measured in Puerto Rico from the 20th to the 24th of September. This is the time when Kyle developed in the Caribbean Sea. As a storm, Kyle has brought a lot of rain. The highest measuring was over 30 inches. That is an amount of over 75 cm of rain in 4 days!

Of course we have some information about hurricane Kyle, making landfall in Canada. And in the table here below you can see the total rain, storm surge and the highest gust and lowest pressure measured in different weather stations.

Landfall:

Kyle came ashore as a hurricane on the Nova Scotia island of Canada. As we saw on the previous pages, we looked at the wind speed and the rainfall in this area. Now we are going to look at the damage that Hurricane Kyle has caused in the affected area.

Damage Puerto Rico and Haiti:- The heavy rainfall caused floods- Evacuations on Haiti and Puerto Rico- A lot of areas were drenched, again, because of the damage that Fay, Gustav, Hanna

and Ike had made. - Total damage count was estimated at 14 million US dollars

Damage Canada:- Trees were damaged- Power lines went down - Moreover, a bridge had to be closed, because of the wind gust. It was too dangerous to

be on the bridge during the storm.

Because of Hurricane Kyle, there were 6 casualties. The reason is unknown. The total costs of the damage are unknown as well. So the latest estimated count of the damage is still 14 million US dollars. This doesn’t include the costs of the damage that Kyle has caused in Canada

Appendix:

Hurricane Kyle was a special hurricane. Kyle was one of the first hurricanes that ever made it to Canada. Besides, in Maine (in the United States) it never happened before that a hurricane watch took place (Only in 1991). Hurricane Kyle was also a storm that caused a lot of damage to Puerto Rico and Haiti. These areas are heavily damaged by this hurricane season! First Fay, Gustav, Hanna, Ike and now Kyle.
