INTRODUCTION

• Pipelines are the cheapest, safest, reliable & most efficient

way to transport oil & natural gasway to transport oil & natural gas

• Inherent hazards associated with transportation of

hydrocarbons by pipelines such as leaks, etc.

• Ageing issues‐ about 33% of hydrocarbon pipelines in India

have been operating for more than 25 years

• Recent pipeline incidents have emphasized the need forRecent pipeline incidents have emphasized the need for

INTEGRITY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM (IMP)

IMP symbolizes the concept of failure prevention

I l th t id tifi ti i k i iti ti i diInvolves threat identification, risk prioritization, periodic

assessments & timely mitigation to avoid mishaps

Main objective is to ensure that pipeline is sound & capable

of performing the tasks for which it was designed.

Should not be limited to ageing pipelines

h ld b d d &Should be incorporated in design, construction & operation

stages of pipeline.

HYDROTESTING

Hydro test is a method to test pipelines for strength as well

as leakageas leakage

Usually water is used as test medium

In operating pipelines, fluid medium may also be used for

testing pipeline integrity

Direct Assessment (DA)

Since only about 50% of the pipelines in the world are

conventionally piggable, DA techniques were developed as an

alternative to ILI & pressure testing.

Generally there are 3 types of DA:

External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA)

Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment (ICDA)Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment (ICDA)

STATUS OF INTEGRITY MANAGEMENT IN INDIA

Relatively new concept in India

R l ti f I t it M t (IM) l d i lRegulations for Integrity Management (IM) already in place.

However, it is usually a documentary obligation as safety has

no visible returns on the balance sheets.

Currently prescriptive based IM, i.e., not based on actualCurrently prescriptive based IM, i.e., not based on actual

parameters, being practiced.

di l i l d f i h i lIndian regulations rely on ASME codes for various technical

CONCLUSION

Integrity Management is a relatively new concept in India

IMP is the need of the hour to ensure pipeline safety

IMP helps maintain the right balance between maintenance

measures and resulting finances

There are various issues in implementation of IMP in IndiaThere are various issues in implementation of IMP in India

Operators need to collect adequate baseline data and switch to

performance based IMPs
