Structure and Specification The Edexcel GCSE in ICT comprises two units: Unit 1, worth 40% of the total GCSE and Unit 2, worth 60% of the total GCSE. Syllabus details Edexcel/GCSE – 500/7575/5 What does the course include? This course covers a range of ICT theory and applications. You will learn about the effect of ICT on society and you will be able to develop ICT skills in order to develop a wide portfolio of project work. Year 10 Unit 2: Using Digital Tools

This is a practical unit. You will broaden and enhance your ICT skills and capability. You will work with a range of digital tools and techniques to produce effective ICT solutions in a range of contexts.

You will learn to reflect critically on your own and others’ use of ICT and to adopt safe, secure and responsible practice. This unit is internally assessed under controlled conditions. You must complete a controlled assessment

task provided by EdExcel.

Year 11 Unit 1: Living in a Digital World In this unit you will explore how digital technology impacts on the lives of individuals, organisations and society. You will learn about current and emerging digital technologies and the issues raised by their use in a range of contexts (learning and

earning, leisure, shopping and money management, health and wellbeing and on the move). You will develop awareness of the risks that are inherent in using ICT and the features of safe, secure and responsible practice.

This unit is assessed through a 1 hour 30 minute examination paper set and marked by Edexcel.

How will I learn? You will develop skills in planning; information seeking and you will learn how to evaluate your work. During practical lessons you will be learning the skills you need to use in order to work independently completing your controlled conditions coursework. In order to learn the theory needed for the exam we will use practical demonstrations and tasks, presentations, group work, role plays, practice questions and quizzes to help you revise. How will my work be assessed? 40% external examination at the end of year 11, 60% controlled conditions coursework. What skills will I need to be successful in this subject? This is a new, exciting and challenging course of study. It is essential, therefore, to possess an interest in Information and Communication Technology and a genuine desire to investigate how computers function and operate, and the functionality and application of software packages. This is both a theoretical and practical course, which will draw upon your analytical and problem solving skills and competencies. What are the opportunities after this course in order to progress to the next level?

It will give you the opportunity to progress into a more specialised level 3 vocational or academic course or into an apprenticeship. It will also give you the potential opportunity to enter employment within a wide range of job roles across the Information Technology sector and some aspects of the creative and administrative sector.
