Middle Leadership Team Editorial

Hi All

Welcome to this May 2017 edition of our IES gazette. I am Gemma and I am the Data Manager, CAF Lead and an Associate Teacher. I have worked at IES for just over two years and I am enjoying it immensely.

I cannot quite believe that we are nearing the end of the summer half term. I can say that this has been the busiest half term yet with all pupils working hard to gain their qualifications. We have such a wide range of qualifications being studied; from ASDAN Qualifications, AQA Unit Award Scheme, Entry Level Certificates and GCSE’s.

With the sunny weather starting to appear (some of the time) pupils have been getting out and about exploring Warwickshire. We have had one pupil who is interested in health and fitness visit BodyPower Expo at the NEC and some pupils have visited the Mad Science Museum, Hatton Country Farm, Planet Bounce, the RSPCA and lots more.

All of our year 11 and 12 pupils have really impressed me. Not only have they had to revise for their busy schedule of examinations, but they have also been very busy completing coursework. I started working at IES just over two years ago and the progress that all of our year 11/12 pupils have made is phenomenal. So a big well done to you all, you should be very proud!

As you may or may not be aware my role as Data Manager involves me assessing pupils reading and spelling ages at the end of each term to see what progress has been made. The spring term has seen the most progress being made with a large number of our pupils reaching their targets in spelling and reading which is brilliant. Currently 33% of pupils here at IES are working at a reading age equal to or above their actual age, 42.86% of these pupils are reading above their actual age which is an excellent achievement for all pupils at IES.

There has also been an increase in positive behaviour recorded for all pupils this term, the total number of positive behaviour recorded continues to improve every term. Attendance continues to remain at a high percentage of 85% so a big well done to you all.

I would like to congratulate staff members Kayleigh, Chloe, Gus and Jason who recently did a bungee jump to raise money for IES’s charity SENDIES. All of these staff members showed great amounts of courage and bravery and showed that they are extremely committed to this cause. I would also like to congratulate Kirsty and Kayleigh for organising the event. Watch this space for future charity events.

Thanks

Gemma McCusker

The 'Get to know the IES Team' feature is where each month a different member of the IES team will be interviewed for you to find out more about them. This month we interviewed Shace.

A: That every day is different.

Q: Who is your hero?

A: My mum who taught me all I know and has always shown me that hard work pays off.

Q: What do you do to relax?

A: I enjoy doing Yoga.

Q: If you were an animal for a day what animal would you choose, and why?

A: I would be a pampered pooch who gets lots of walks and cuddles.

Q: Name 3 things you couldn't live without.

A: My dog Tula, my mum and the internet.

Q: What song best sums you up?

A: “Don’t stop me now” by Queen.

Q: What is one thing you are looking forward to?

A: My holiday to Tenerife later this year.

Lewis: If you were a tree and you had to be chopped down and made into paper, which book would you like to be?

A: Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter.

Letter Box Club

Back to IES this year is the Letter Box Club, in partnership with the Book Trust! A wonderful way for parents/carers and their younger children to access English, through activities including reading, games and many more through monthly gift packs. Arranged during the end of the Spring term, students who fulfilled the criteria for the programme will receive a package at the start of each month for six months in total. May was the first of the deliveries, and as you can see, Abigail (left) and Charlotte (right) were very happy to receive their packs and very excited to get started. For more information, please check out the Letter Box Club website: http://www.letterboxclub.org.uk/. We’ll let you know if you qualify.

Maths-Here Lloyd is fully engaged in his maths lesson, using great numeracy skills. He is using a number line to do addition.

Great work Lloyd.

PE- Frankie visited Lea Marston golf club and used the facilities there. Frankie has a natural talent for golf and he really enjoyed his time there. He took part in a personalised lesson on how to use the golf club and swing the club correctly.

Well done Frankie –golf is a great way to keep fit for all age groups. And what better way to exercise, outdoors in the fresh air and with beautiful blue skies.

A big warm welcome to IES new student Lorenzo below, from Solihull.

On his first day in school he made some white chocolate rice crispy cakes, they were delicious and a big hit with the other students.

Angling- Back on the timetable for the Spring/Summer term 2017 is Angling. Giving the students the opportunity to select some equipment and a nice location, using our newly qualified Angling Coach at IES (Dan Roberts). The students have researched visits to local fishing sites, caught fish and after weighing have safely put back into the water. The students have learnt how to assemble and use a pole and line for fishing and to care for equipment and clean and put away after use. We have been out to different locations with Leon and Jack. After visiting the canal under a bridge on a rainy afternoon with no fish, Leon has been able to catch himself a lovely carp at Friezeland Pools; Jack on the other hand has made friends with the lovely cat that lives at the Barn Fishery, Hartshill. Maybe Jack was hoping to win his new friend over with some lovely fresh caught fish?

Educational Visit to the Think Tank in Birmingham. Lorna and Charlie had such a fun day on their visit offsite. Lorna enjoyed interacting with the robot making it talk and dance. Lorna and Charlie both enjoyed some role play in the cafe area by putting their numeracy and money skills into practice. Charlie then learnt how to operate a pulley system. And, team work to boot!

Maths galore- On the left is Abigail's work. She has been practising subtraction and her commitment is paying off. The other (right) is of Lorna's poster for ASDAN Maths about buying a car using finance and calculating the APR and the other costs involved.

Destiny and Jo (who are the best of friends) have been spending time together every Wednesday and building up their team work skills. So far this term they have visited the RSPCA, Ansty Castle and Warwick Castle. On a recent trip to the RSPCA Destiny and Joe had to research what the RSPCA stands for and what they do.

Michael has been busy offsite at Soft Touch which he visits each week. Whilst there Michael is supervised doing woodwork. So far Michael has made raised flower beds for school and this project will be a bench. Keep your eyes peeled for the finished product.

Did you know…..The Serengeti ecosystem is a geographical region in Africa. It hosts the largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world. The Serengeti is also renowned for its large lion population and is one of the best places to observe prides in their natural environment.

See here beautiful paintings by Rhylee and Abigail which were inspired by the Serengeti.

Here Abigail can be seen learning about hurricanes as part of her English lessons. She is putting the names of hurricanes from 2006 into alphabetical order - she got them all correct! You can also see her work where she has identified the examples of personification in an extract about water. Great work Abigail.
