Social InnovationStrategies of social and environmental sustainability

    IES Milan Syllabus

DESCRIPTION:This course explores the emerging reality of social innovation, social production and socialbusinesses and their ability to generate social impact efficiently, effectively, and sustainably. We willexplore this global phenomenon through international case studies, with an emphasis on localMilanese cases. During this process the city of Milan will unfold itself through its many creativecommunities and its unique model of social change "all'italiana".Milano has been for decades a breeding ground for numerous cases of social innovation especially inthe fields of housing and food and in recent years it has established its place as a research hub onsocial innovation with prominent thinkers like Ezio Manzini, Franois Jgou and Carlo Vezzoli ofthe Politecnico di Milano university.(3 credits)

COURSE FLOW:We will start by forming a general understanding of the global environmental crisis and a view ofthe different directions proposed for dealing with it around the world. We will then frame the areaof solutions this course is interested in: the bottom-up, culturally driven solutions also know associal innovation. We will proceed to look at the new possibilities of collaboration and organization created byinformation and communication technologies (ICT) and examine the reality of social innovation onthe web, where we see many examples of social production that are challenging incumbent methodsof production. Together with our guest Mina Farrokhi, a strategic designer who specializes in socialmedia we will examine the growing role social media takes in world politics and global events , fromthe 2009 elections in the USA and Iran to the revolution in Egypt. The next unit deals with creative communities, i.e. everyday people that are coming up with

innovative ways of solving social and environmental problems locally. Taking advantage of thestudents' abroad experience, this unit focuses mainly on examples from the city of Milan and isbased on research done in the Politecnico University of Milan on the subject of design for socialinnovation and sustainability.Part 4 zooms in on the food and agriculture industry, its related environmental problems and theemerging counter trends to the industrial, centralized model. This part is particularly relevantbecause Italy is a world leader in the movement for eating sustainably and based on cultural valuesand many good examples can be found in Milan.Part 5 views the flow of models, values and skills of social innovation into the business world:business initiatives aimed at social and environmental change and companies adopting social andenvironmental responsibility. The second part of the week will be dedicated to group projects, here

every group will have the chance to put into practice their creative minds in an attempt to promote asocial cause of their choice using the models and tools learnt in class.
