Standard 11- Professional Conduct and Leadership
The competent teacher understands education as a profession, maintains
standards of professional conduct, and provides leadership to improve students
learning and well-being
1. Fully state the standard in bold text. Then write a paragraph explaining your
knowledge and understanding of that standard-put the standard into your own words.
I think this standard is meant to set the expectation that a teacher should be a
well-rounded individual. I think the teacher should understand that teaching is a job
with goals that need to be accomplished. Teachers must work in a professional
manner and maintain appropriate relationships with their students as well as parents
and administrators. They should never cross the line in terms of how close they get
with students and they should always dress and act in a professional manner. The
teacher should always serve as the leader in the classroom. A good leader is able to
accurately dispel their knowledge onto others as well as teaching them valuable life
skills. Although teachers are there to convey information to their students, I believe
that it is equally important that they teach them how to be respectable citizens within
our society.
2.Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and
application of the standard.
The artifact I chose for this standard is a paper on NCLB with a particular
focus on the sanctions involved with the legislation. The paper demonstrates my
knowledge of knowledge indicator 11B within the standard, which states,
understands how school systems are organized and operate. Through writing this

paper I have come to recognize that school systems base their operations on funding.
Everything that happens in the school revolves around how to get more funding, how
to maintain funding, or how to prevent the chance of losing funding. The primary goal
behind all administrations is to have their students receive passing grades on their
standardized tests and to have them pass to the next grade level. If this goal is not
reached, then they must allocate their funding elsewhere as punishment while also
trying to gain additional funding to improve the conditions at hand. This paper made
me realize the vicious cycle that is involved in the education system in terms of
funding. It also made me understand the utter importance of adequate funding in the
proper operation of education.
3.B If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e. class assignment, reflect
upon how your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.
Although I ultimately would strive not to lose any creativity or fun within
the classroom, I think my teaching will be greatly impacted by this assignment. I
would never want my students to leave the school and transfer to another simply
because the test scores are not regarded as high enough. I think that I will initially
want to be free with my lesson plans and do what I think is best. However, I think that
I will come to the realization that it is important to teach as close to the standards set
forth by the state as possible because that is what my students will be tested on and it
is vital that they understand the material. I think that this assignment scared me a little
in terms of how successful I will be in practice. I absolutely do not want to be the
cause for the whole school being labeled as in need of improvement.
4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and

Learn in a Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.
I believe that by meeting this standard I will be prepared to teach in a diverse
society because anyone that acts in a professional manner knows how to deal with
differences. Displaying professional conduct in the classroom will ensure that
everyone is treated equally and that both teacher and student understand a level of
respect. Lastly, a good leader is able to retain knowledge from others just as well as
he or she is able to give it off. Learning from others will make the teacher well-
rounded and better prepared to deal with diversity.
