Standard 7- Communication
The teacher uses knowledge of effective written, verbal, nonverbal, and visual
communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive
interaction in the classroom.
1. Fully state the standard in bold text. Then write a paragraph explaining your
knowledge and understanding of that standard—put the standard into your own words.
This standard stresses the importance of communication. Teachers need to be
able to communicate in many different ways and with many people. We need to inform
parents on what is happening in the classroom. Teachers also need to talk with co-
workers and administrators in order to improve curriculum or try new ideas in the
classroom. Communication is also crucial with our students. They need to feel
comfortable in the classroom and have ample opportunities to share ideas with the class.
Students should have the opportunity to talk with teachers or write letters in order to
communication feelings or ideas. Overall I believe that keeping communication open
and safe is a vital part of the classroom.
2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application
of the standard.
The artifact I chose to demonstrate my understanding of this standard is a letter
that I wrote to accompany a traveling book bag that was to be sent home with students.
The letter explained to the parents what the book bag was, its’ purpose, and how to
complete the activities included in it. This was a written form of communication that I

used to share ideas and instructions with parents. I believe that a letter like this keeps
parents informed and makes sure that they understand what is expected of their child. At
the bottom of the letter I include that if they have any questions that they can feel free to
contact me. This also promotes communication because the parents could write a letter
back, e-mail me, or call me. Making sure that parents feel comfortable is key to keeping
communication lines open.
3.B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect
upon how your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.
This artifact, a letter to parents describing a traveling book bag, was created for a
class assignment. After completing the letter it reinforced how important communication
is. There are a lot of directions for the traveling book bag and I wanted to make sure that
everyone understood what was expected so that the students could be successful at it. If
assignments are sent home and are confusing for parents they will be less likely to come
back to school completed. I want assignments to be fun and educational for students and
making directions easy to understand through various means of communication will
ensure that my goal is met.
4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and
Learn in a Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.
While communication is essential in every classroom, being able to communicate
with a variety of people and in different ways is critical. Teachers need to be aware of
how diverse people converse and share ideas. Also, making sure that your means of

communication are clear and concise can answer many questions. Creating a bond with
parents in the classroom strengthens their child’s educational experience and ensures that
all expectations are understandable.
