2 Al Kader Oasis - February 2020

From the Potentate’s Desk by 2020 Potentate I.S. Carl Thompson

Happy February to you all! We have some exciting things planned for the year. The first and most important thing is our upcoming ceremonial April 11th, 2020. Once again we will be having the ceremony at the historic Portland Scottish Rite building. Any Noble top-line signing a new candidate will receive the Potentates Vision award. This award comes with many rights and benefits. If you would like to know what they are, then top-line sign a new Noble. JUST ONE. When was the last time you visited your blue lodge and shared the story of joining the Shrine?

This is going to be a very special year for Al Kader on so many levels. This is the 100 year celebration for the vote to start our hospital system. That vote was secured and the Imperial Session was hosted by none other that Al Kader right here in Portland, Oregon. This year we will not be having a Potentates ball. Our event on May 9th is called the Potentates Salute. The evening will be full of entertainment, exciting people, history, and it is not to be missed. If you put one thing on your social calendar in 2020 this is the one. Tickets are selling out fast so call the shrine office as soon as you can to reserve your table.

This is the first “digital copy” of the Oasis. The board has elected to only send out email copies of this communication at this time. If you have received this or found it on the web, then congratulations! You have been dragged into the future. Printing and mailing was extremely costly and hopefully everyone will continue to send in articles and communications regularly and in a timely manner. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Change is a constant and natural part of life. It is a natural quality of “things.” Constant change of things is part of staying the same. Once you realize this, you actually stop seeing each small change as something exceptional (and maybe threatening). Stare at the waves coming in on the beach. Watch a fire. Watch the rain drops, river flowing, sunset, sunrise ... everything’s changing and nothing’s changed. There is a story of a man who came across three Operative Masons busy at work. The man asked the first bricklayer what he was doing. “I’m laying bricks,” the worker replied. He then asked the second bricklayer the same question. “I’m putting up a wall,” he said. The passerby then asked the question one more time, this time to the third bricklayer. The response: “I’m building a cathedral!” Three different men can do the exact same task but for very different reasons. The first may have labored exclusively for the paycheck. He saw his work as exactly that: A task that needed to be completed regardless of the outcome. When the bell rang, he was out the door. The second was likely motivated by a sense of completion and was proud that his bricklaying would result in the construction of a wall. Perhaps he would add a few extra minutes here and there in order to see the goal to completion. But the third was no doubt driven by a deep desire to fashion a religious structure that would enhance worship and bring

Chaplain’s Report by Noble Steven Levin

Please allow me to address the Nobility and their families with a degree of austere thoughts regarding our dire circumstance in this tumultuous world today. It would seem we have once again, found ourselves the object of hatred and targeted because of our freedoms and way of life. We refuse to bend to the demands of terrorist groups and we have avowed to never give in to their demands.

When individuals announce to the world that our deaths will be imminent lest we convert to their religion and law, we respond by doing as we have in the past. We send our valiant warriors to defend our lives and way of life. I humbly ask of you my brothers and sisters, please join me in offering this plea to the Lord our God and creator of heaven and earth. “Please keep those who serve out of harm’s way. We ask thee too, please end these threats and preserve peace worldwide. AMEN”

glory to the divine. Every brick was a step towards that grandiose vision and aspiration. No doubt that such a person would do whatever was needed in order to see his glorious visualization come to fruition. In your vision of Al Kaders future is there a deep desire to keep our fraternity healthy and secure? What is your why? Why are you a Shriner? Lets work together to get new Nobles and build an exciting future for Al Kader together. How can I help you?

Tualatin Valley Shrine Club by Noble Herb Richardson

We want to thank all the Nobles and ladies who came out for the Tualatin Valley Shrine Club meeting and December Christmas party. The Peppermill Restaurant did not do a holiday buffet but instead did a plated holiday dinner, complete with desert, for a very reasonable cost. And it looked like everyone enjoyed the selection and had plenty to eat.

After the meal there was a short business meeting and then the Potentates Representative Noble Larry Evey installed the new club officers. Congratulations to our new President Ralph Jubb, First Vice President I.S. Art Hermanson, Secretary Steve Levin, Treasurer Rod Hevland, and Chaplain (by appointment) Frank Brewington.

The fun part of the evening was the gift exchange where each attendee was given an opportunity to select a wrapped gift from the gift table or swipe one that had already been opened. The person having their gift taken was entitled to make another trip to the gift table. Of course everyone eventually ended up with something to take home. Lots of fun was had by all.

I have nothing on my agenda for this month’s meeting in the way of entertainment or enlightenment but I know President Ralph will come up with something for our pleasure or enjoyment. Let’s just all go to the next meeting of the Tualatin Valley Shrine Club and be surprised with whatever comes up. And, don’t forget to bring those bottles and cans to the next meeting for our recycling fund raiser or better yet, if you are using the new blue bags, take them right to the collection site.

The next business meeting and dinner will be at the Peppermill Restaurant on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 with dinner at 1730 and the

meeting starting at 1800. But come early for some social activity. If anything changes between now and then, the Secretary will let us know by email or phone call.

Happy Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day.

High Noble, Kevin Snyder as First Day Keeper and Ralph Jubb as Second Day Keeper. We also honored High Noble Ted Balestreri on serving as our First K’uhul in 2019. High Noble Ted presented I.S. Todd a check for $1,000 to the Transportation Fund

The purpose of this social club is having dinner events with our Ladies and raise money for Al Kader Transportation Fund. K’uhul Gamble announced a Flower Basket Sale starting in January and baskets would be delivered in May, just in time for Mother’s Day. I.S. Bud James will be chairman of the flower basket project. Additionally. The Mayans will host a taco feed at the spring ceremonial and plans to host the fall ceremonial dinner. All the net proceeds will go to Al Kader Transportation Fund.

The Mayan Tribe currently has 22 members and will continue to grow to have fun social events and a purpose in supporting transportation for our children at our hospital.

Legion of Honor Mid-Valley by Noble Carey Huckaba

We had a very good attendance at the Legion of Honor Mid-Valley Platoon meeting on Dec. 11, 2019 at the Scottish Rite Center in Salem. We had 22 Nobles and 7 Ladies. Potentate IS Todd Weedman was in attendance and Installed the 2020 officers of the Mid-Valley LOH. The officers installed were Commander Frank Brewington, Lieutenant Commander Alan Harrison, Adjutant Ron Henderson, and Sgt. Of Arms JB Dick. IS Weedman also swore in two new nobles in to LOH. They were Noble John Birch and Noble Jim Sonsteng. There were three Nobles from North Coast Platoon LOH and appreciated their attendance. Our next meeting is Jan. 8th and would like to see a large attendance.

Clatsop County Shrine Club by Noble Carey Huckaba

Over a dozen Shriners and Ladies braved strong winds and high waters for the installation of Clatsop County Shrine Club’s 2020 officers. The installation was held in the Warrenton Masonic Lodge at noon on December 20th.

Despite 50 MPH winds and a foot of water over the highway in several places, fourteen of Al Kader’s finest braved the elements to be a part of this joyous event. And, if the high wind and deep water was not enough of a hardship, the storm left the entire city of Warrenton without electricity, yet the resourceful Nobles in upper God’s Country served a sumptuous lasagna dinner, with salad, garlic and rosemary toast, with an ample portion of apple pie a la mode for dessert.

Al Kader’s First Lady Marti remarked of how romantic it was enjoying a delicious luncheon with Todd by candlelight.

Clatsop County Shrine Club’s 2020 officers are: President Victor Kee, 1st Vice President Ronald Atkins, 2nd Vice President Richard Lee, Treasurer Norman McLaren and Secretary Ronald Collman.

President Victor Kee, Treasurer Norman McLaren and Secretary Ronald Collman were installed by Ill. Sir Todd Weedman by candlelight following the luncheon.

Greeters By Noble Don Slezak

Happy Groundhogs Day. I hope you know a couple of groundhogs to celebrate with.

Plan on meeting April 7, 2020 at 6 pm at the Shrine Center. This will be the official start for the 75th Annual Al Kader Golf Tournament. There are several important details we need to take care of. All Greeters are expected to attend and all nobles with an interest in the golf tournament are cordially invited. Everything about the tournament except for the date and place are open for discussion. For example we need a new sign maker. The date is August 13, 2020 at the Oregon City Golf Course at Lone Oak in case you forgot. The shotgun start is scheduled for 9 am.

Now is the time to start getting your team together. It is probably still raining so quit playing with your umbrella and get your team together. This is a perfect event to involve non-shriner masons and friends or relatives for a day of fun and good fellowship. You don’t have to be a good golfer to enjoy the day since you are part of a team. Where else can you have more fun on a beautiful day in August with your clothes on?

Some other activities for you is the Superbowl Party and Chili Cook Off February 2nd at the Shrine Center at 2 pm.

Live at the Shrine Dance Night: February 9th and March 8th from 4 - 7 pm.

Are you having FUN yet?

Al Kader Patrol Lou Westwick, Past Patrol Captain

Patrol had their annual installation at the Stockpot in Beaverton on January 5, 2020. The meal was very good as usual. Our officers were installed for their 2nd year of their term.

At our first meeting of the year we discussed another unit get-together that will a tour the Portland underground. The Portland underground, also known as the Shanghai tunnels, are among the weirdest and most depressing of Portland’s historical attractions: An underground tunnel system, not unlike a smaller version of the Paris catacombs, that human smugglers used to transport unsuspecting victims in the late 19th century. The best, and only completely

legal way to access the tunnels is beneath old town Chinatown by taking a 90 minute guided tour operated by Cascade Geographic Society (CGS), a local nonprofit that donates a portion of its proceeds to the fight against modern human trafficking. Tours come in several flavors. CGS provides flashlights, but you’re welcome to bring your own. They also recommend dust masks for people with respiratory issues, as the underground air quality is pretty poor. We will need is an RSVP before the event, February 14, 2020, so that we can plan for the dinner afterwards, just send Captain Dennis Harris a email back letting him know if you will be attending. This tour is open to all Units.

Concert Band By Noble Jeff Zimmerman

“Tell them why!” indeed!

While listening to I.S. Carl Thompson’s address to the Nobility and guests at his installation, one of the most impactful phrases to reach my ears was, “tell them why.” Out of context it might leave you wondering about this seemingly random statement. But when you realize the scenario from which this statement is quoted, it really tugs at a Shriner’s heart. I.S. Carl was projecting a situation that every Shriner and probably every Lady and relation of that Shriner have been in more than once. During a conversation with just about anybody relating to being a Shriner the question always comes up, “what do Shriners do?” That’s when we in the Shrine/Mason family talk about our hospitals and the children we help, and the research we support. Then the dialogue comes around to how does driving a tiny car in a parade or making balloon animals help kids. We all have the answers to that; attracting attention, raising awareness, being seen by the public, etc.

But the question is seldom asked, and perhaps easiest to answer is, “Why do you do it?” To my understanding, that is the point of I.S. Carl’s message: “Tell them why!”

The simplest answers, but no less important than the others, is for the children, to help to make their lives normal. For the research to help future children reach normalcy easier. For the doctors and staff that pour all their energy into making life better for those who need help.

But the true, soul awakening answer to “why” is the emotional and spiritual jolt of pleasure we receive when a child in leg braces sees your FEZ and walks over to hug your legs, or when an adult tells you that they were a Shriner child and

because of the care they received they are successful today, or when a parent throws their arms around your neck and thanks you for giving their child the opportunity to be a child. These moments are the pay-off for everything we do to support Al Kader and the Shrine philanthropy.

Each of us has our own deeply personal reasons why we give of our time and energy to the Shrine. As an added bonus, Al Kader extends many opportunities to link our giving with other activities that also bring us joy and excitement. For some, it’s riding a motorcycle in formation or controlling traffic, for others it might be greeting Nobles and guests at Shrine functions, or carrying flags in a parade. For those of us in the Concert Band the added joy is derived from making music with others, perfecting the harmonies, hearing a new or difficult piece of music grow and improve through the process of working together as a team to produce a sound we are proud to share with an audience.

The Concert Band was very pleased and proud to play for the crowd at the Officers Installation last month. It would make us happy to include many more musicians in our merry-making. If you play a standard band instrument, or if you used to in days gone by, come sit in with us any time, we are confident you will have fun. Very little experience required, if you know which end of the horn to blow into, we can help you with the rest. It will be a short time until you are feeling the joy of harmonizing with this group, and when asked you’ll be ready to “tell them why!”

Fine for now.

Unit and Club Parade Season by Jay Carey, Director of Units

Welcome to the 2020 parade season. I am attaching a copy of the parade schedule as it is currently known. As always the final confirmation of each parade will be sent out to you as soon as I receive confirmation and application info from the parade organizers.

In order to have the most current and up to date listing for each unit and club, I am asking that each send me an email with the 2020 officers and contacts (I’ll be able to update the “Blast” list) to include each Nobles email address.

In that same email I am asking that each unit/club list the parades that you have agreed to participate in after each has met and are agreeable to attend. I will be getting with I.S .Carl and Noble Terry to schedule our Unit/Club Head meetings and will send out notices for those meetings. My personal

desire is to keep the need for the meetings to a minimum and communicate via emails and temple calendar.

Finally, I want to thank Noble Robert Baugh for agreeing to assume the Assistant Director of Units position when asked by the IS Carl and Noble Terry. I am looking forward to a great year and showing our Fez’s in the various communities.

As we ring in the New Year, it is important to recognize some of the milestones achieved in 2019. I am excited to let you know that we have two new Master Masons within the Portland Shriners Hospital team. Alex, Clinical Transformation Specialist, became both a Master Mason in Washington and has already became a Shriner with Afifi Temple. Most recently, Dr. Matt Bernstein, Chief of Staff, also became a Master Mason of Oregon. We are very proud of both Alex and Dr. Bernstein as they continue the tradition of Masonry and Shriners.

Our daily fracture and sports injury clinic continues to stay busy. It is not only faster than a visit to the emergency room, but it gives patients access to quality pediatric orthopedic care. When it comes to pediatric orthopedic care, kids are not mini-adults. Many thanks to our physicians, outpatient clinic, and registration team for providing excellent service.

With the closing of 2019, I want to thank all of our physicians and staff for providing excellent quality of care and supporting a number of medical education programs. A special thanks to both our clinical and basic science research departments as your efforts are changing the lives of kids today and for years to come.

PROPOSED BYLAW CHANGES

It is the recommendation of Shriners International that the Al Kader Bylaws be corrected as follows:

• Article II -§323.13 should be changed to §323.12, because there is no §323.13.

• Article IV, Section 8 -§325.9 should be changed to §325.10, which is the correct section for election of Representatives, and "Imperial Bylaws" should be corrected to "bylaws of Shriners International", which is the correct identity of the corporation.

• Article IV, Section 9 -§325.9 should be changed to §325.11, which is the correct section for Election Regulations.

• Article V, Section 2 -"The Imperial Council" should be changed to "Shriners International", which is the correct identity of the corporation.

• Article VII, Section 1-§332.1(i) should be changed to §332.1(e), which is the correct section for changes to initiation fees.

• Article VII, Section 3, (A) -"the Imperial Council" should be changed to "Shriners International", which is the correct identity of the corporation, and "Imperial By-laws" should be changed to "bylaws of Shriners International", for the same reason.

• Article VII, Section 5, (A)-"Article 23 -§323.12" should be changed to "Article 32 -§332.6", which is the correct section for life memberships for Meritorious Service.

• Article VIII, Section 3 -"Article 27 -§327.8(d) and" should be stricken because that section relates to notices for meetings of the Board of Directors and is unrelated to budgeting.

• Article VIII, Section 8 -§334.5 should be changed to §334.6, which is the correct section for audits.

Furthermore the Executive Board has recommended the following changes to the bylaws:

• Article IX, Section 1, (A) and (B) – The Property Management Committee be renamed the Facilities Committee and all references thereto be changed accordingly.

• Article IX, Section 1, (A) – The Facilities Committee shall be comprised of the Chief Rabban, Assistant Rabban, and the Facilities Manager. In addition, the executive board shall appoint no less than one Past Potentate, and two Nobles to the committee.

• Article X, Section 4, – The Director of Units or one of his Staff Officers shall issue directives approved by the Potentate to the Units and hold meetings as instructed by the Potentate with the executive officers of the units to discuss unit involvement in Temple activities and other concerning Temple matters.
