Pain Controland Local Anesthesia for the Dental Hygienist 1.5 CEUs

This course presents the basic science and dental science foundations of clinical localanesthesia, in preparation for Connecticut State Certification for administration of localanesthesia by dental hygienists. Students will learn to perform safe, effective andproper techniques of intra-oral pain control utilizing local anesthetic administration onstudent/client partners. Emphasis is placed on client evaluation for predicting and preventingcomplications.The course consists of 30-hour home-study/online component and a 15-hourclinical experience.

Looking for a career in high demand with options? A career in dentalassisting offers both, with excellent employment opportunities.

The Dental Assisting program offers educational and clinical experiences withcurrent technologies, including digital radiographs and computer technology, in astate-of-the-art dental lab housed in our new facility space.The program consistsof classroom, laboratory, pre-clinic and internship. Classes typically meetevenings, with some day and weekend classes required. Internships begin in Juneand take place during regular business hours.

Course content includes basic aspects of dental terminology & dental sciences;anatomy & physiology; microbiology; sterilization procedures; and radiologyhealth and safety.The program will consist of three modules to model the DANB(Dental Assisting National Board) exam: Infection Control; Radiation Health andSafety; and General Chair-side. Students will sit for each part of the DANB examafter they successfully complete each program component. Passing the threesegments of the DANB exam is a requirement for certification.

Central Sterile Processing Technician(Approved for WIA Funding)Central sterile processing technicians are responsible for thesanitation and packaging of surgical instruments in hospitals,surgical centers and clinics. Whether you are looking tobegin your career in health care or prepare for the CentralSterile Processing Technician national certification exam,this course may be for you. This 13-week program coversanatomy and physiology; microbiology and infection control;decontamination and sterilization processing; and how tohandle, care for, and identify surgical instruments.The courseincludes clinical exposure to Central Sterile ProcessingDepartment. Phlebotomy Technician CertificationPreparation Classes Meet Sept. 15-Jan. 21 (Approved for WIA Funding)Learn how to collect blood and specimen samples for yourcurrent job, or to make yourself more marketable. Thephlebotomy technician is an integral member of the healthcare team in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinicallaboratories, physician offices and medical centers. Thisprogram, which is accredited by the National PhlebotomyAssociation (NPA), provides 200 hours of classroom theoryand clinical lab instruction in accordance with NPA standards.Students who successfully complete the program are eligiblefor a two-day externship at either the Department ofLaboratory Medicine at John Dempsey Hospital of UConnHealth Center, Middlesex Hospital Lab or Shoreline Clinic.Course content includes basic aspects of medical terminology;anatomy and physiology; venipuncture; specimen collectionprocedures; safety and universal precautions; commonlaboratory tests with clinical significance to body systems anddisease processes; and laboratory equipment. Basic Motorcycle Rider Course:The course, which includes six hours of classroominstruction and 12 hours of on-cycle training, is designedto help individuals with little or no riding experience achievea better understanding of what is involved in operating amotorcycle. Classes are held evenings and weekends, and varybetween three and four sessions. You must have a driver’slicense or motorcycle permit and be physically able tooperate a motorcycle. Experienced Rider Course:Designed to improve rider skills in braking, evasive maneuvers, andturning, this course will provide you with “street strategies” to helpyou guard your safety. You will use your own motorcycle and willneed a valid motorcycle license, registration, and insurance card.

General InformationContinuing Education Units (CEUs):Some non-credit courses give Continuing EducationUnits. The CEU is a nationally-recognized standardreporting measure for continuing education activities.One CEU will be awarded for each 10 hours oforganized instruction. A permanent record isestablished for each student enrolled in a non-creditcourse. A certificate is issued to those whosuccessfully complete a CEU course. For a course thatis awarded CEUs (or for someone seeking a certificateof completion for a course) the student must attend atleast 80% of the sessions and achieve a passing grade inthe course.

Withdrawals/Refunds: Refunds may be obtainedif your written withdrawal is submitted to theWorkforce Development & Continuing EducationOffice three business days prior to the first meeting ofyour class. Refunds generally take 2-4 weeks to process.There are no refunds for motorcycle classes.

Course Cancellations: Courses offered throughTunxis Workforce Development & Continuing Educationare self-supporting. Low enrollment may result incourse cancellation up until the day before the classbegins. Students may accept a refund or transfer thetuition to another course during that semester.
