23440 Mystery TourWith your Tangier Family, use your observation and interviewing skills to investigate Tangier Island. Remember to be respectful of everyone. Be mindful of people’s time and space. you should not ask an individual every question, but you can ask different people the same question. Break up the questions. you should walk all over the island. Everyone should ask questions and everyone should listen. Have fun exploring and figuring out how Tangier works!

Tangier Home Visits Tangier Home Visits will provide a unique opportunity to intimately discover a community with an extremely rich past and uncertain future. you will be spending some quality time with people who have chosen to live on an isolated island at the bottom of a 64,000 square mile watershed. Seventeen million people, governmental regulations, global markets, and rising sea level directly impact the people that you will be talking with and the watermen community that they love.

All of the people you are going to visit have volunteered their time because of our interest in the heritage that means so much to them. Please be extremely respectful of the time, thought and generosity of the people who are going to help you really know what it means to be a Tangierman in 2012.

Work with your family group to brainstorm questions. Below are a few questions that are designed to help you get started. Divide up the questions and introduce yourself. let the conversation flow.

Watermen ExperienceTake advantage of this extremely rare opportunity to spend quality time with some of the greatest watermen and community leaders left on Tangier Island. These individuals are proud, hard working, real-deal Tangiermen. Be polite, respectful and shake their hands. Below are questions that will help you get to know a Tangier waterman. Please ask your own questions that arise.

Find out the name of the waterman who is volunteering to spend time with you. Also fi nd out the name of his boat and who he named it after. Put both names in the box below.

• Would you tell us about your boat (style, advantages, disadvantages, engine)

• What is your daily routine as a Waterman?

• What is your favorite Bay animal? Why?

• What is the most interesting thing you ever caught?

• What is your favorite part of being a Tangier Waterman?

• Do you specialize in one type of fi shery? What other fi sheries besides crabbing can people participate in on the island?

• What types of expenses are involved with crabbing/fi shing? Has there been anything that has signifi cantly impacted those expenses?

• How has the price of crabs changed over the years? What sets the market price? • Is soft crabbing or hard crabbing more profi table? Why?

• Where do the crabs go when they are sold to market?

• How are different fi sheries (crabs, oysters, fi sh) doing in the Tangier Sound? • Have you noticed a change in the health of the water over time (clarity, fi sheries, etc)?
