FAQs Where do I register? You can register online on the Student Record System (SRS) srs.humber.ca. SRS enables students to register, withdraw, view timetables, access student records, and much more! When do I register? To find out the date when you are to register for your courses and/or electives, visit srs.humber.ca and click on “2012 Registration Information” What courses do I register into? You will be registering yourself into courses based upon your curriculum.

- After signing into the Student Record Service website (srs.humber.ca) select the Full-time Registration option.

- Click on the Register Now button during your registration window. In the Registration Work Area courses are listed based on your curriculum.

- Choose courses by ADDING or SELECTING them. - Confirm your course selections by clicking NEXT and under ACTIONS click the CONFIRM link to

finish the registration transactions. Fees: Please note that your tuition fees should already be paid. All late fees or fee deferrals should have been arranged by this date. If fees are not paid in full, or if you did not receive an OSAP fee deferral, you will not be able to register into any classes. Late payment of fees will restrict your choice of courses, as some classes will be filled. You can pay your fees on-line with Visa or MasterCard. Pre-Requites: You will be unable to register into a course if you have not successfully completed the necessary pre-requisites course(s). Conflicts: Please note that the system will allow you to register into courses with conflicts times. It is your responsibility to build a conflict free timetable. Semester 4 is a fast track semester for classes:

All 4th semester courses have classes twice a week – 2 x 3 periods.

Missing one week is equal to missing two weeks in a regular semester and you will most likely miss evaluations.

Extended Christmas vacation is not a valid reason for missing evaluations.

Semester 4 (for those that started September 2012 or January 2013) Core Classes Credits TRAV260 Internship – 224 hours; 7 weeks 9 The internship course is a required component of the Tourism Management-Travel Industry Services program. The internship will provide the student with a practical learning experience within a sector of the Tourism industry. The course consists of a 7-week training placement, at an approved Tourism partner and is based on a 32-hour training week (total 224 hours). Students will have the opportunity to self-identify an industry sector to do and complete their internship. While each learning experience will differ due to the type of company, each student will have the opportunity to work both individually and collaboratively in a real workplace environment. The internship encourages students to apply skills and implement knowledge learned in the classroom to the needs of the current workplace. Students will have an industry professional as their mentor and be provided with a practical, applied and experiential learning opportunity. The Tourism Management - Travel Industry Services Internship will present the student with the opportunity to train in a broad range of leading travel agencies, tour operators, consolidators and tourist boards. Pre-requisite: HRT 212

Core Classes: 7 weeks HRT. 232 International & Sustainable Tourism 3 International and Sustainable Tourism is an evolving and dynamic issue in the today’s global marketplace. This course examines the growth of international tourism destinations, the impacts of globalization, and the concepts of sustainable tourism. It will highlight the factors influencing international tourism demand and how tourism businesses are evolving and operating in a global environment. Students will explore sustainable tourism by identifying the key themes and challenges experienced by destinations and suppliers. Students will be actively involved in researching the economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts of tourism. TRAV 256 Group Travel 3 In this course students are introduced to marketing, operations and pricing strategies relative to leisure group travel. Students explore various aspects of these markets including traditional leisure & special interest groups. Students work in teams to design a group tour and deliver a sales presentation to a classroom audience. Pre-requisite: TRAV 116

Elective Course Descriptions: HRT. 231 - Entrepreneurship This course examines the key components of a business plan with emphasis on entrepreneurship. Using a practical approach, students will conduct a feasibility analysis by identifying a new business concept, designing the products/services, identifying a target market and selecting a location. Upon completion of the feasibility analysis, students will develop marketing, operations and financial plans. Franchising and buying an existing business will be examined and compared with starting a new business. Text: Skinner, J.R. (2012). Business Plan to Business Reality. (3rd ed.). TRAV 250 – RESPRO - Automated Tour Operator’s Reservations System

This course prepares students to function effectively in the computerized environment of a Tour Operator. Utilizing the REVNET Reservation System, students create, retrieve, modify and cancel a variety of tour bookings. In addition, students examine and interpret numerous information screens as they relate to a variety of client situations. This course is highly recommended if you are interested in a career with a Tour company. If you are planning on an Internship with Nolitours &Transat Holidays, this course is mandatory. Working knowledge of the REVNET system is also beneficial for those pursuing a retail career, as it is very similar to the SIREV Tour Reservation System used by most retail Travel Agencies. Pre-requisite: TRAV116

TRAV 254 – Sabre Computer Reservations ONLINE (weeks 1 – 14)

This online course allows students to build on their working knowledge of the reservations systems used as sales tools by travel professionals. In this course, students apply previously acquired knowledge of the Apollo Reservation System to explore a full range of operational functions of the Sabre Computer Reservation System. As an online course, it requires independent learning, time management and problem solving. The content is delivered online using Viasinc and is supported by a Humber faculty member through email only (blackboard site). Pre-requisite: TRAV252 Textbook: Moving from Apollo to Sabre (VIASINC) Manual & Internet Access Hours

TRAV 257 Destination Representation and Tour Conducting This course examines the full range of functions of tour escorting/leading and destination representatives. Students are introduced to tour conductor and destination representative job tasks and responsibilities.

Local destination knowledge, customer service approaches, as well as administrative and crisis management processes and procedures are examined to assist students so that they make informed career choices. Note: January/February: This course is only offered in the evening due to the availability of the faculty expert that delivers the course. PLEASE do not let this be a deciding factor as to whether you choose this elective; it’s only for 7 weeks! Be guided instead by whether this elective will help with your future career aspirations. March/April: this course is offered in the day time. TRAV258 Destination & Product Specialist –ONLINE (weeks 1 - 14) The Destination/Product Specialist course provides students with the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of a comprehensive selection of tourist destinations. The content of the course is offered solely online and is delivered by official tourist boards, tourism associations and recognized international travel agency training establishments. A certificate is issued upon satisfactory completion of each destination module and, where applicable, advanced certification may be pursued once employed in the travel industry. Students are provided with a directory of specialist programs from which to select their training. Students may complete alternate specialist programs subject to the prior approval of the course professor. A grade of SAT/UNSAT will be added to student records upon completion TRAV259 Study@Sea Study @ Sea is an experiential multi-country learning opportunity in partnership with the Institute for Shipboard Education on their branded “Enrichment Voyages”. This is a new style of cruising that focuses on the exploration and study of cultures around the world. Students explore the history, politics, culture and environment of the countries being visited through enrichment lectures and interactive workshops delivered by academic faculty. At each destination, students have the opportunity first hand to engage in adventure, eco, cultural or community outreach programs. By touring destinations and attractions, students apply skills in professional conduct and assess and evaluate tourism services, trends and tourism development opportunities. See application for trip specific information (costs and dates). Mandatory classes will be held in the winter semester.
