The power of good design

Authenticity; that most elusive of qualities. Impossible to imitate. Hard to find. Easy to shatter. It is, however, the hallmark that runs through both Moy’s and its creators.

It began with the rediscovery of part of London’s lost past, a mews building that evolved through the centuries to become the crucible of early 20th century invention. Then – from the footprint of this heritage site – a new building emerged, faithful to the original but stripped back to produce beautifully connected, hand-made, individually detailed living spaces inside an extraordinary exterior.

Moy’s is unique. A workshop that was once home to the people who invented Britain’s fledgling film industry, hidden in the heart of NW1. Now that same spirit of ingenuity and invention has returned, to create just eight individual homes for equally individual owners.

Christopher Ploutarhou and Charles BettesFounder and Director – Gpad

Gpad has worked with Hamilton Court for many years and share their same dedication to precision and detail. Managing Director Christopher Ploutarhou founded the practise 15 years ago and five years later Charles Bettes joined as a Director. Between them they have worked on some of London’s most innovative buildings.

Charles:“The whole attitude of

architecture for me is to work closely with the developers and simply let go. Many architects are afraid to let their projects off the rein but we’re not like that. Our clients are our friends because it’s all about collaboration.

We spend a long time talking to them until we are sure not just what they like, but what they don’t like too. No one person has a monopoly on how a building should be designed.”

Christopher:“Pratt Mews is a really good

example of the way Hamilton Court works. They’re very

passionate about what they do and they only use people who want to make it the best.

It’s about quality building and quality design. The glazed bricks and recessed downpipes, all the details work together as a whole design.

They always build places where they would love to live.”

Charles:“Camden is quite an

eclectic area and the use of more edgy materials reflects that. You don’t need to be an architect to know good design. We like to work with people who are positive about what they want. It’s a true collaboration.”

Mews properties were originally where the artisans and the craftsmen of history lived and worked.

Moy’s was typical of dozens of businesses which crowded the streets and mews buildings in Camden Town. Cardboard box makers, motor body builders, timber merchants, glass merchants, paint makers, wire-workers and general smiths, air-conditioning firms which made sheet metal ducting, opticians. Camden was once the home to London’s largest colony of piano makers. Today, only one – Heckscher remains, just a few steps from Moy’s.

By the end of the 19th century, Pratt Mews was about to make sparks fly when engineers Earnest Moy, and Percy Bastie moved in to set up their radical electronics company, filing scores of patents for their inventions. One would change the world of entertainment forever.

They began a series of experiments to develop an electric camera that could record moving pictures. And thanks to a collaboration with inventor William Friese-Greene, Moy and Bastie produced what is widely recognised as the world’s first Kine camera.

This is the Moy’s camera that Captain Robert Scott took to the Antarctic in 1912, that saw duty in the trenches of the First World War and, it is said, that the very first Hollywood movie was shot on.

By the 21st century, however, Moy’s had gone forever and only the much neglected building remained. The ingenuity and invention, though, lives on running through every line, every brick, and every inch of this new chapter in Camden’s history.

Quirky Camden has its own special place in the capital. Not as over-groomed as its neighbour Primrose Hill, it retains its urban authenticity rubbing up along Regent’s Park, King’s Cross, Clerkenwell and the West End.

It is where many stars and celebrities have made their homes, and where a relaxed village vibe still survives in one of London’s hottest postcodes.

Camden’s own nightlife and shopping is legendary, while Primrose Hill’s world-class retail and restaurants are a 10-minute walk away.

London’s greatest open space, Regent’s Park, is less than a mile away. And a brisk 15-minute walk – or 2,000 steps on a Fitbit – takes you to the refreshing, hushed interior of the British Library.

The British Museum, Oxford Circus, Sadler’s Wells Theatre and Covent Garden are a short walk.

If your journey takes you further, the Northern Line at Camden Town links to King’s Cross, Euston, Charing Cross and Waterloo. More relaxed journeys can be found on the Regent’s Canal or by bike on the canal towpath.

Flavio TamburroMixologist – Simmons Bar

As a specialist mixologist at one of Camden’s most magnetic nightspots, Naples-born Flavio Tamburro is a modern day alchemist. But instead of seeking the formula to turn lead into gold, Flavio turns spirits, juices and his own secret ingredients into happiness for his customers at Simmons Bar in NW1.

“I love this bar, and I love mixing cocktails and always trying to create the perfect taste and feeling. It’s kind of like making medicine that people love. That makes me very happy too.

I’ve been in London for six years and Camden is such a great place to be. Simmons has terrific customers, and it’s a different feeling or vibe every night. Some nights it’s for couples who want a quiet, intimate drink. At the weekend there are DJs playing very cool retro sounds and you get more of a dance crowd.

One of our greatest inventions is the Cocktail Teapot where friends share a large cocktail poured into teacups from a traditional pot. It’s how the Long Island Tea cocktail came to be created in the USA during prohibition.

Camden is full of great restaurants, great shops, great places to go. I think London tourists miss out if they don’t come here. It should definitely be the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, and Camden.”

Simon WilliamsLocal Artist – Camden

Simon Williams’ hats have been many and varied. From performance art to painting pavement reproductions of the famous masters and being crowned Time Out Magazine’s ‘Street Artist of the Year’, Simon has always known how to grab the public’s attention. Without the confines of a brief his art is characteristically impactful and vivid.

“Camden is a special place to be, surrounded by creativity, which feeds my imagination perfectly.

There is quite a range of work I do, and there are some common themes to the work and the place.

Texture, the urban essence, the grit of being part of a city. Camden is so rich in these themes in so many ways that it’s the perfect place to be. Eclectic doesn’t even begin to describe it.

We like the edgy creativity that Camden has. It feels a bit untamed and that adds to its appeal for the people who visit us.

If you look outside, there’s always something different going on. Saturdays and Sundays, you can hear the choirs in the churches. At a certain time each day, the bakers open their back door for a breather and you catch the smell of their wonderful bread.

We certainly feed off all this creativity and we hope, that in some way, what we do feeds back into it too.”

Simon’s recommendations:

Attention to detail is the difference between just good and plain stunning, and it is this intense focus that sets Moy’s above other buildings. Its design takes cues from the classic terrace mews, but grafts in new materials, new echoes of its traditional past, set against the ever-edgy, ever-creative personality of Camden.

WindowsZinc roof Downpipes

The zinc roof of warm bronze and red tones provides a sense of depth to the eaves.

Solid wood windows produced in black reinforce Moy’s industrial past.

Exposed black downpipes break the length of the façade into smaller segments, reducing the scale of the building to suit the street.

Beautifully Crafted

HingesBrick work

Glazed metallic brick marks the building openings to create a sense of hierarchy.

Lambeth hinges evoke a sense of history, enhancing its historic impression.

Sophie SmithDesigner

Sophie graduated from the University of Manchester with an honours degree in architecture and brought her unwavering focus on detail to Hamilton Court Developments. She has an unrivalled ability to find and work with the world’s greatest craftsmen to create interiors that respect a building’s origins while inventing a new kind of discreet urban glamour.

“I wanted to stay true to the history of the original building, to echo its industrial past, while making homes that people feel comfortable in with really beautiful details.

Everything is intended to work together. When you look at the really special glazed bricks there is almost a metallic finish thread in the inky, oil-like finish, which picks up the copper bronze tones of the roof.

The windows were made for us by a bespoke joinery company and the cast iron downpipes are recessed and very traditional. Not everyone

would have done that but it felt and looks right. That’s the point. Our buildings aren’t for everyone.

The cabinetry in the kitchens was made for us in Sweden and no two kitchens are the same. Some have a secret passage to a utility room hidden in the cabinet doors. Others have a full length glazed window looking back into the hallway.

We don’t want to produce a plain white box. We couldn’t be further from it. It’s not flashy, if anything it is almost humble. What we are saying is, ‘trust us – we will get it right’.”

Sophie’s recommendations:

The building’s bespoke casement windows echo its origins. And the Lambeth hinges on the doors are still made in the same exacting way they were more than 200 years ago – by hand pouring molten cast iron into crafted sand moulds.

Timber parquet floors throughout give a sense of continuity, and skirting boards pick up the colour of the architraves throughout each property in cool, granite tones hand painted on site.

This simple complexity works together to create a fluid, redefined take on the home. Every switch, floor, faucet, cabinet, window and tiniest detail will be a daily reminder of the quiet luxury that has been built into Moy’s from the ground up – to the exacting standards of the Hamilton Court creative.

.The Moy’s team has searched the world for some of the rarest fittings with a perfect simplicity giving calm and balance to the interiors.

Touch points like the Buster and Punch knurled kitchen door handles and light switches have the same satisfying tactile snick as the magneto switch on a classic Bentley.

Kitchens are hand-built by Sola cabinet makers in Sweden, chosen for their traditional in-frame cabinetry, where all the doors fit inside the structure of every piece of hand-made cabinet or island. The drawers are solid birch, so the grain can be felt and admired every time they are opened.

Bedrooms

Each bedroom is fitted with bespoke wardrobe cabinets crafted by The Wood Works, fourth generation carpenters and joiners in the heart of England. The cabinets are raised up from floor level so the skirting board can flow around the room uninterrupted. Like every other room, future-proof technology has been built in so users can upgrade to a fully intelligent remote controlled home in the future. It will be possible to control the lights, the heating and the sound system with their smartphone without ever leaving the bed.

Kitchens

Each unit, with oversized-depth worktops and exquisite, mid-grey cabinetry, is hand built by Swedish craftsmen true to their 70-year tradition. Details such as industrial light fittings, dark metal and knurled ironmongery reference the site’s origins. And each kitchen holds its own unique quirks: stone shelves, a hidden corridor, or a full length glazed unit looking back into the apartment’s hall.

Traditional wooden panelling gives a period feel, offset by the narrow, vertical tiles fired with an inky finish that reflects the glazed bricks used on the exterior. Jonathan EllisManaging Director – HCD

Hamilton Court Development’s projects begin with the discovery of a building, but not just any building. First there has to be an almost indefinable ‘something’ about the space, the location, or just the feeling of authenticity it gives. Then the team searches the world for the best materials that are not just beautiful, but also reflect the integrity of each building and its history. There is no standard design, and no standard building. Each one is unique.

“We turn away properties because they don’t match what we do. We have the freedom to buy and work on projects we can enjoy creating.

Each expert member of the team has been handpicked to exceed standards, set higher design goals, and deliver simple, beautiful buildings.

There is no fear of failure in our company, no fear of getting it wrong. Just freedom to get it right.

Each project is a commitment in time and passion. It is not enough for a project just to seem right. It has to feel right, look right, and just be right. This was true from Hamilton

Court’s origins and it is still true today.

This doesn’t feel like work. It is a passion. I love all the buildings we’ve made. We don’t copy other people and we don’t ever copy ourselves. There is no standard Hamilton Court Development style.

We make things that improve people’s lives. Not just those who live there, but the people who live or work near it, or just walk past. People who get to see it every day.

Our buildings belong as much to their neighbourhoods as they do to anyone else. That’s why we do it.”
