"I am an ordinary woman from the rural-poor community, my new born baby was

diagnosed with  severe infection in the blood and lungs, having breathing difficulty

needing ventilator support .Given the medical complications & the urgency to save my

baby's life, I admitted him at a private hospital. My husband was the only bread winner with

a meager income. Nevertheless, we borrowed money from neighbors' & financiers and

exhausted all our resources completely. My baby was operated successfully and

recovered too. But from being poor, we have now become poorer. Most part of

the meager income we make, goes towards the debts and now we are not able to afford

good education & further health care for our child....”

Jyothi – a poor Indian mother, Kancheepuram, Tamilnadu.
