High School Senior ScholarshipsOfficials of Columbus City Schools identified the high school senior in each school who

demonstrated the most significant volunteer service during their high school career. These

students were invited to apply for a Rotary scholarship. Following interviews of selected

applicants the following students have been awarded $2,500 scholarships.

Briggs High School Ana Martinez Memorial Park – Conducting walk-a-thons to fund a permanent memorial at Briggs for a classmate struck and killed by a car in 2012Briggs Hope Garden – Improving the ambiance of Briggs by planting bright and colorful flowers and providing classrooms with flowers having school colors La Pulsera – Raising $1,017 for the people of Nicaragua by selling their handmade pulseras (bracelets) and raising awareness of their hardships

Brookhaven High School Chess Buddies – Continuing a partnership with Maize Elementary School by teaching the younger students how to play chess and establishing good rapportReading Buddies – Serving as “reading role models” and increasing literacy by visiting and reading to first graders at Maize Elementary SchoolWinterFest! – Hosting an event to connect Brookhaven to its community and feeder schools, to showcase its musical and visual arts, and to have a food drive

Centennial High School Centennial NHS Serves the Community – Conducting several projects to address the basic needs of disadvantaged adults and youth in the greater Columbus areaCircuit Work – Developing an initiative to encourage students to make healthy food choices and to pursue physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle

Columbus Africentric Early College Bridging the Gap – Creating a greater sense of community by doing fun activities with elementary students, reading to them, and modeling good behaviorHelping the Hungry – Doing many activities to

West High School Clean Water for Haiti – Building a filtration system to help children and families in Haiti have clean drinking water following the devastating earthquake of 2010 Finding a Cure for All – Organizing many fundraisers to help cancer patients through donations for breast cancer and leukemia and lymphoma researchArts and Crafts of the Past – Giving back to the community through weekly JROTC visits to the elderly to teach them arts and crafts and to share stories

equipment and art supplies and raising funds for community organizationsNHS Food Drive for the Clintonville Resource Center – Organizing a school-wide food and toiletries drive for the needy in the Clintonville-Beechwold area The Giving Tree – Collecting toys, books, and school supplies to fill the stockings of needy children in the Clintonville-Beechwold area during the holiday season

The Middle School “Service About Self” Fair was held on March 26, 2014 with 21 Columbus City schools participating. Four projects were selected to exhibit at the High School “Service Above Self” Fair:

Columbus City Preparatory School for BoysFalcons Read to Lead at CCPSB – Making positive connections with sixth graders, encouraging reading, and improving leadership skills during lunchtime reading program

Columbus City Preparatory School for GirlsPeer Tutoring – Conducting peer tutoring to focus on relationship building among sixth and eighth graders, positive peer role modeling, and improved academic achievement

Monroe Alternative Middle SchoolMonroe: Bridging and Building Community – Serving others to bridge Monroe and the community, to bring the community into Monroe, and to build community within Monroe

Yorktown Middle SchoolBreak the Chains of Poverty: Pay It Forward! – Educating students and staff about the types of poverty and initiating activities to address school and community-based poverty
