May 31, 2018 Monthly Theme: Help Others Virtue: Reverence Dear Parents and Guardians, As we wrap up the school year, I wanted to take a moment and impart some of my thoughts shared with the Class of 2018 on their graduation night. It is very common at graduation ceremonies to offer a reflection – to identify people we aspire to, to thank God, and to look for direction in the writings of other people. One person I like the most is Mother Teresa and she shared a message for all of us to live by:

"People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Fogive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create it anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.”

Mother Teresa offers a more difficult lesson – but one that brings us closer to self, others and God. Forgive others even if we still hurt. Be kind to one another and to yourself. Look for ways to be successful. Honesty and Respect for people and nature – are always the best policy. Do good – it will define you. Give your best all the time and keep God close.

I have witnessed these life lessons in the classroom and the hallways of St. Margaret of York. – - Last week at field day – one of your classmates was upset and some of you sat with them – missing the games and fun. - Kindness.

Page 3: In the Loop – Friday Folder Notes - smoy.orgsmoy.org/Portals/2/Files/Friday Folder/Friday Folder 5.31.pdf · exhibiting empathy, listening to the needs of others, ... Olivia Wooten

- At lunch or on the playground – I watched some of you go over to one of your classmates who was sitting by themselves or playing by themselves. – Do good!

- I have sat with some of you when there was a disagreement or conflict – you shared your story and perspective with one another and then repaired the relationship. - Offer forgiveness.

- I heard your moans and groans over the state testing but you completed them successfully. -Always Do Your Best!

- You prayed in class, at mass, at sports games, and the end of day. – Keep Jesus close. Just like the stories I shared with you each week, these small acts can have a profound effect on others. Your goodness leads to more goodness, your forgiveness, leads to someone else forgiving, your small act of kindness will lead to more acts of kindness. As I shared with the 8th graders and their parents I hope that all St. Margaret of York students will continue to act with kindness, be respectful, be honest, offer forgiveness, and always stay close to Christ.

Have a blessed summer, filled with great memories and lots of laughter. In Christ’s Peace, Kevin Vance Principal

Times of Transition During this time of the year we recognize the following staff members who will be transitioning to new jobs or positions: Mrs. Vicario, kindergarten, will be leaving to teach grade 3 in West Clermont Schools. Mrs. Youngquist, grade 5 and 6 math, will be moving to Covington Catholic High School so she can be closer to her home and new baby. Mrs. Pisciotta, kindergarten, has moved to Anderson and will be taking care of her mother. Mrs. Cheryl Hahn, speech and language therapist, will be retiring after 32 years in education. Mrs. Guarente, grade 1, will be moving to kindergarten for the 2018-2019 school year here at St. Margaret. We wish all of these dedicated and hardworking individuals much success and happiness in their next positions. Another change that will be implemented during the 2018-2019 school year is a decrease in the number of classes in kindergarten and first grade. Due to lower enrollment in these two levels, we will have two kindergarten classes and two first grade classes instead of three. While the number of students in the classes will be slightly higher than they are now, an aide will be assigned at each grade level. This aide is a fully credentialed teacher who will be supporting students in their learning and assisting to differentiate in the classroom to meet the needs of all students. This transition is necessary in order to meet budget obligations and due to the number of students who are registered to attend next year. Homerooms with less than 20 students in them is not financially feasible. I am quite confident that the highly trained staff will continue to provide a remarkable education for all children.

ST. MARGARET OF YORK SCHOOL ---- SUMMER READING - 2018 FIFTH GRADE 2018-2019

Summer Reading Novel: One AR Book of Your Choice

Dear Students: Over the summer, you are required to read a book for fifth grade to keep your reading skills sharp. Be sure to pick a book that you have not read before. Select a book that is an appropriate reading level for you.

Upon completing the book, you are to make a book jacket. Instructions and requirements are below.

Book Jacket Assignment You will need either a white piece of regular computer or construction paper. Fold the paper in half hamburger style.

Front Cover: Design a new cover for your book. Include the title of the book and the author. Add color please! (Note: You are not being judged on your artistic ability, rather if you put in the effort.)

Inside Left: Include the setting: where and when the story takes place. Also include the main character(s). Write a sentence or two describing each character.

Inside Right: Write a summary of the book (anywhere from 5-10 sentences).

Back Cover: Rate your book from 1 star, being you’d never read the book again, to 5 stars, it was the best book you’ve ever read. Then, write a quick review (2-3 sentences) based on your star rating.

Please have your book read and the book jacket assignment completed by the first day of school. The assignment will be taken for a grade.

Also, you must take the AR test for your book before the start of the school year. The website can be found on the portal under parent resources.

SIXTH GRADE 2018-2019 Summer Reading Novel: The Watson’s Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis; please have a copy of the book for discussion in August.

Dear Students: Read the following information below before you begin reading your summer novel. The book should be read and the assignment completed by the first day of school. The assignment can be handwritten on a piece of loose leaf paper or typed. The novel will be discussed in class and the assignment will be taken for a grade!

For the assignment, please include the following:

Setting: When and where does the story take place?

Character Description: For each character, list three to four words (think of vivid words) that distinctly describe him/her. Give examples from the novel for each trait. For example, if you describe one of the characters as sensitive give an example from the novel of how he/she is sensitive.

You should have descriptions for each of these characters: Kenny Watson, Byron Watson, Joetta (Joey) Watson, Daniel Watson (Dad), and Wilona Watson (Momma)

Chapter Summary: For each chapter in the novel, write a 3-4 sentence summary. There are 15 chapters plus the epilogue so in total, you should have 16 summaries.

You must also take the AR test for this book before the start of the school year. The website can be found on the portal under parent resources.

SEVENTH GRADE 2018-2019 Summer Reading Novel: Far North by Will Hobbs Barnes & Noble on Fields Ertel has a limited number of the books. It is available after June 1. It is best to call ahead to check for availability (513) 683-5599. The novel can also be purchased at Amazon. Please have a copy of the book for discussion in August.

Character Paragraphs: Choose two main characters in your novel. Write a separate paragraph for each character using a character trait (an adjective) to describe that character. Cite two specific examples of that characteristic in each paragraph.

Discussion/Essay Questions and Responses: Write three questions that a teacher might ask you about the novel either in class or for an essay. These questions should be thought-provoking. Just writing these types of questions helps you to anticipate what questions might be asked of you in class discussion or on a test and encourages you to think more insightfully about the book. Write a two sentence response to each question.

Key Passage: Choose the most important passage in the novel (in your opinion). Type it out word-for word. Make sure to identify the speaker and page number.

Key Passage Explanation: In a fully-developed paragraph (five-six sentences), explain why your chosen passage is important to understanding the novel. Often, this selected passage will offer clues to the novel’s themes. Explain any mentioned or inferred themes connected to the key passage.

Format: Proper heading with your name, date, class, and novel title; typewritten: one inch margins, 12 point font, Times New Roman. Your paper should be in an easily readable format - double spaced. Back to Friday Notes

Ohio 529 FAQs

What is a “529 plan”?

Named for Section 529 of the U.S. tax code, a 529

plan is a tax-advantaged investment plan operated

by a state to encourage saving for education

expenses. As there is risk when investing in a 529

account, we are required to advise readers talk to a

financial advisor.

What are the qualifying education expenses? Following the passage of 2017’s Tax Cut and Jobs

Act, funds in a 529 plan may be used for tuition,

books, fees, computer technology, or room and

board at a qualifying college and for up to $10,000

in tuition at a K-12 private or religious school.

What is the federal tax advantage for using a 529

plan? The growth of your investment is not subject to

federal taxation as long as funds are used for

qualifying educational expenses. There is no federal

deduction allowed for contributions.

What are the tax advantages in Ohio of investing

in a 529 plan? In addition to tax-free growth on the investment,

taxpayers in Ohio who contribute to the state-

run CollegeAdvantage plan may deduct up to

$4,000 per beneficiary from their taxable

income. At a tax rate of 3.5%, contributions of

$4,000 apiece to two separate 529s could lower

taxes owed by $280.

Who may donate to a 529 account? Anyone may contribute to a 529 plan for any

beneficiary. Any Ohio taxpayer contributing to a

ColegeAdvantage plan may take a deduction,

regardless of who the beneficiary is.

Can funds in a CollegeAdvantage account be

used for K-12 tuition in another state?

Yes, the funds can be used to pay K-12 tuition

expenses in any other state.

Can the beneficiary on an account be changed?

Yes, a beneficiary may be changed at any time,

and changes in beneficiary among siblings will

not incur a tax liability. However, if the new

beneficiary is not a sibling of the original

beneficiary, there may be a tax due on the growth of

the investment.

Is there an annual limit on how much one person

may donate to a 529 plan? 529 contributions are counted as a “gift” for federal

taxes, so more than $15,000 to a single beneficiary

could trigger a gift tax on further giving.

Is there an annual limit on using a 529 account

for K-12 tuition expenses? Yes, the maximum amount that can be

distributed tax-free per calendar year is $10,000

per student, regardless of the number of 529

accounts.

Can an existing 529 account be used for K-12

expenses?

Yes, there are no federal or Ohio restrictions on

using funds in a 529 account for K-12 tuition in

2018 and beyond. However, since some states’

plans do not recognize K-12 tuition expenses, be

sure to check with your plan manager for any plan

other than CollegeAdvantage.
