Mrs Karen Munro | Acting Head of Junior School

Welcome to Term 4, Week 9

Last week was one of celebration as we welcomed our Grandparents, enjoyed the Talent Quest, had fun at our Soccer Finals and raised money for Rio’s Legacy. This week we have farewelled our graduating Year 6 students and given thanks for another wonderful year in Junior School.

It has been a privilege and pleasure to serve as Acting Head of Junior School and I wish you a blessed, safe Christmas spent with family and friends. It is at these times when we reflect on the joy of being loved and loving others in return. As you celebrate Jesus, our Immanuel "God with us", I pray that your home is filled with peace, joy and love. I hope you have a wonderful time of refreshment with your family over the holiday break.

We will welcome Mrs Nicole Smith in 2019 as our Head of Primary School and are praying for her and her family as they prepare for their move to join us at Green Point Christian College.

Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary School

This has been a crazy year; so much has happened. It is great that we are coming to the end of the year, so things can come to a stop and we can all have time to refresh and refocus on the most important things in life - God and family. A God who loves each of us immensely that He would sacrifice so much just for us. It is a time of peace and joy, a time of reflection and family, a time for recuperation and energy, but most of all, a time to reflect on the most precious gift we were ever given. Have a marvellous and joyous Christmas. I pray it will be full of peace and joy for you and your family.

Thank you to all of the wonderful Secondary Staff who have worked so diligently this year to love and care for our kids. I wish to also thank the Faculty Co-ordinators, Year Advisors and anyone else doing extra duties in the College for your leadership and dedication in the carrying out of your roles over the past year. Thank you for your support and may you all have a refreshing break.

Year 12, you will still need to spend time on your HSC work. You do need to get study and notes completed. You need to rest, but not be comatose.

Thank you to all parents, you have allowed us another year to teach your children. May you and your family have a safe holiday break and may your students come back refreshed and excited for another year at Green Point Christian College.

Year 8 HSIE Grow Warrigal Greens

As the world changes, the importance of sustainable food and farming practices is becoming a much talked about topic. The future of our planet relies on our youth growing to be informed citizens and responsible stewards. Throughout the year, the Year 8B HSIE class have had regular discussions about growing sustainable foods, focusing on Australian native food sources. Warrigal Greens are one such edible plant.

The history of Warrigal Greens, or Botany Bay Spinach as it is sometimes known, is an interesting one. Indigenous Australians have been eating these for millennia, and Sir Joseph Banks took them back to Britain with him as evidence of New South Wales being a sensible place to start a colony.

In fact you can find this amazing vegetable growing wild at the Yattalunga waterfront, only a stone’s throw away from the College. But why forage when you can grow your own? Last Friday, 8B HSIE added some Warrigal Greens (or “Wozzy G’s” as the students prefer to call them) to the Green Point Green Patch. This spring the Green Patch is truly thriving, and these native greens are another welcome addition. It will be interesting to come back to school in February and see how much they grow over the summer holidays.

Changes to the Year 12 Car Park

Over the holiday break much work will be carried out around our College, and one of the areas to be affected will be the current Year 12 car park. For the next two terms approximately, the car park will not be operational and students are encouraged to catch their normal buses to and from school. Much of the parking spaces about the College will be affected and students will not be permitted to park in the main parking area. Could parents and students please dialogue now about the possibilities of transport for the coming terms, in preparation for the all important year ahead. Many thanks. (Mrs Rochford, Year 12 Year Advisor)

Planned Site Works

Stage 1 Car Park DevelopmentWe are excited to advise the commencement of Stage 1 of a project to redevelop aspects of the College’s car parking arrangements. In partnership with MSK Architects and North Construction this project will deliver a new formal entrance to the College for visitors and also resurface both the existing administration car park and the area used by Year 12 students. Stage 1 of the project also introduces a roundabout at the top of the rise coming from the existing Green Point Baptist Church entrance to assist traffic flow in this area.

We expect the project to commence during the Christmas holiday period with some initial disruption to traffic flow entering the admin car park space as the roundabout and ramp-up area are completed. It is expected that this component will be completed prior to the commencement of Term 1, 2019 and we thank you for your patience during the construction phase.

Given that the Year 12 car park will be unavailable for the majority of Term 1, 2019 we have asked our senior students to avoid traveling to school by private car. We thank them in anticipation of their cooperation during this disruption. Further to this, we will create temporary car parking spaces for staff only in the area behind H block.

Stage 2 of the car park will introduce further works leading up the hill beside the Kindergarten block and also include the construction of a new Primary School staffroom and offices in the unused location next to Kindergarten. It is expected that this further work will commence in the second half of 2019.
