The Future of the Liberal ArtsDr. Timothy Austin

Provost, Duquesne University

In his remarks, Dr. Austin will seek to refute the arguments of those who see the liberal arts succumbing to the relentless march of technology and colleges like Saint Anselm College forced to bow before a growing chorus of demands for “relevance” in education. Rather, he will argue, the liberal arts reflect an innate human drive to pursue knowledge, understanding and creativity as the foundation for progress.

KEITH P. CHEVALIER College Archivist and Head of Special Collections

As the college archivist and head of special collections for Saint Anselm College, Keith Chevalier is responsible for collecting and preserving all archival records of the college and monastery. In addition, he is curator for special collections which include the ACA/Lambert Franco-American Collection, the Anselm Collection, the New England Collection, and the Rare Book Collection. He received a master of arts in library and information studies with a specialization in archives and records administration from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In addition to graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, he has attended Rare Book School at the University of Virginia.

TIMOTHY R. AUSTIN Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Duquesne University

Timothy Austin was previously vice president for academic affairs and dean at the College of the Holy Cross and has served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Creighton University. He has taught at Loyola University Chicago, where he chaired the English department and served as director of the interdisciplinary program in linguistic studies. Dr. Austin earned a master’s degree in English language and literature from Oxford University’s Lincoln College and a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He has authored books and scholarly articles on linguistics. He is a member of the Saint Anselm College Board of Trustees, for which he chairs the academic affairs committee.
