Tarzan

Everyone has heard of Tarzan. For more than 100 years, he’s appeared in comics, books, Hollywood films, animations and on radio and television. American author Edgar Rice Burroughs originally created the character for The All-Story magazine in 1912. It was so popular that Burroughs then wrote more than 20 Tarzan books.

You probably already know the story: the baby son of an English lord and lady is lost in an African jungle. His parents both die and he grows up with apes (scimmie), not knowing that he’s human. Years later, a group of English explorers find him and take him back to England, where the wild young man has to learn to live in the modern world.

Hollywood has made dozens of films based on Burroughs’ original story, with the actor Johnny Weissmuller playing Tarzan 12 times in the 1930s. The most recent film, ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ in 2016, starred Alexander Skarsgård and Samuel L Jackson.

There are hundreds of Tarzan comics and graphic novels and the character has even been the subject of academic studies on topics ranging from human behaviour (comportamento) and colonialism to the environment.

Over the years, Tarzan has evolved from a simple short story in a magazine to one of the best-known fictional characters in the world.
