Incredible Inventors
What is an inventor? Do you know of any
inventors? What did they
invent? What makes them ‘incredible’?
Incredible Inventors Here are your daily reading and writing activities
Monday 22nd June—
Have a look at the image on page 4 of this plan. Have a chat with someone at
home about what you can see. Who might live there? What do you think they
do? Could you draw an inventors house and label it? You could write some
sentences to describe the inventor or their house.
Tuesday 23rd June—
Watch the following clip of Astronaut Kate Rubins reading ’Rosie Revere, Engineer’ from the
Space Station https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5yZ8K7pb0Y
Look at the ‘Hair Machine’ designed by Mrs Cordy’s daughter, Maisie, when she
was in reception (on page 5). Discuss that this was an invention to help her (like
Rosie Revere invented something to help her Auntie). What would you invent to
help you, or someone you know, in everyday life? Think of some ideas together and write a list.
Wednesday 24th June—
Design your own invention. If you would like to, you could use the template on page 6.
Once you have drawn your design, label it showing what it does and don’t forget to list
the materials you will be using. In the afternoon, you could try and make it!
Thursday 25th June—
1. Tell somebody all about your invention, showing them how it works.
2. Finish the sentence; ‘I like my invention because…’
3. Can you write some sentences explaining how your
invention works?
Friday 26th June—
In the story, Rosie Revere ’kept her dreams to herself’ but then realised you should always
follow your dreams however hard it gets. What do you dream about becoming when you
are older? Why not watch this cartoon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rmm_3-PnMl4&t=205s (TIP:
only watch up to 3 minutes 30—the whole thing is quite long!). What other ideas do you
have? Could you dress up as that person or draw yourself and tell someone why you think
it would be fun?
Incredible Inventors Here are some phonics activities
1. Practise your sounds and high frequency words every day.
2. What words can you make using your sound cards?
3. ‘Roll it! Read it!’ Using the game on page 6, roll a dice. Going along the line
can you read the word? If you can you cover it up or cross it off. Can you
complete a whole line?
4. Can you make your own ‘Roll it! Read it’ game using your tricky words or
blendable words.
5. Inventors begins with an ‘i’ sound. What other words can you think of begin-
ning with that sound? Write them as a list.
An inventor lives here. Can you describe him and his
house? Perhaps you can draw your own house for an inven-
tor and label it.

In EYFS we would interpret 'invent' as 'explore' - these are great ways to explore
(and be messy!) which will lead to the sorts of questions that will help your chil-
dren become 'creative thinkers
