KOC 502-201 SAS EXCLUSIVE: AGRA, JAIPUR & BHARATPUR 5 days/4 nights
During this exclusive SAS experience you will travel like a Maharaja (“great king”)
and stay in luxurious palaces and villa properties while also interacting with local
villagers for a hands-on experience of the real India.
Jaipur (City of Victory) founded in 1727, is the only city in the world symbolizing
the nine divisions of the Universe through nine rectangular sectors sub-dividing it.
While here, visit Amber Fort and enjoy an elephant or jeep ride, and see the City
Palace and Royal Observatory. Then, on to Bharatpur!
The renowned Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Bharatpur is one of the finest
bird sanctuaries in the world. A
handful of Siberian cranes arrive
here annually, while other
commonly seen birds include
egrets, ducks, storks, kingfishers,
cranes, spoonbills, and falcons. On
your rickshaw ride through the
park, you may also see deer,
hyenas, wildcats, wild boars, and
rock pythons.
Later, in the ghost city of Fatehpur
Sikri, a World Heritage Site, visit the Jami Masjid, the tomb of Salim Chisti, the
Panch Mahal, and Diwan-i-Khas. Emperor Akbar’s crowning architectural feat,
Fatehpur Sikri is a place where Islamic architecture fuses with Hindu and Jain
decorative art.
Next, travel to Agra, situated on the banks of Yamuna river, and witness the
rise of the pomp and pageantry of three great Mughal monarchs - Emperor
Akbar, Jehangir and Shahjahan. In modern times, the city of Agra has a thriving
carpet industry, leather workers, and sandstone and marble sculptors, some of
whom claim to be direct descendants of the craftsmen who helped build the Taj
Mahal. A symbol of love, Emporer Shah-Jehan built the Taj Mahal for his beloved
wife. Think of the monuments the world might have in lieu of flowers and chocolates! This unforgettable tour is a chance to

Townships in South Africa came about as a
result of apartheid city-planning policies, which
excluded ‘non-white’ people from living in the
suburbs of the city. They were forcibly moved to
peripheral areas on the edge of the city, where
they had to live in harsh conditions and cope
with extreme poverty. Although apartheid
officially ended in 1994, many people still face harsh conditions from the
consequences of poverty. Despite struggling, the townships are filled with a
strong sense of community, vibrancy and faith. There is a growing hope as many
redefine their futures within and beyond the boundaries of the township.
Tambo Village is a small, contained community located within the Gugulethu Township where everyone knows each other and
lives within walking distance, making it an ideal homestay location. This homestay project is owned and operated by
community members who have a vested interest in the comfort and safety of their guests.
Tambo houses are built out of brick and mortar and have running water, flush toilets and electricity. Accomodations are simple
and geysers (water heaters) are not standard; bathing in some houses is either with cold water or with water heated up on the
stove. Participants will share a room with another SAS participant within the meals, linen and bedding are provided by the host
family. The food quality is excellent and special dietary needs may be catered to upon request.

CAS401-101 BERBER VILLAGES OF THE HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS 4 days/3 nights
Located on an oasis at the base
of the High Atlas Mountains,
Marrakech is the gateway city to
the Sahara. Legend and fact both
contribute to the explanation of
Marrakech’s unique character.
The palm groves that sprang up
provided an ideal place for the
Saharan nomad Almoravids to
settle. Since that time,
Marrakech has seen many
dynasties and fortunes rise and
fall, resulting in a remarkably
beautiful city that has not only become the capital of southern Morocco but an
integral city to the Islamic world. The cultural, natural and historical attractions of this traditional Berber capital, seat to nearly
all of Morocco’s dynasties over the last thousand years, make Marrakech the top tourism destination in North Africa.
From Marrakech, travel into the mountains and become truly immersed in Morocco's rural culture. Spend a few days enjoying
the varied scenery and the kind hospitality of the Berber villagers. Enjoy walks through cultivated terraced fields with the
jagged mountains of the High Atlas rising into the distance. This trip provides a wonderful opportunity to spend time with, and
learn about, rural Berber communities as participants will spend two nights in the villages.
Note: This trip involves strenuous physical activity, including hiking in a wilderness setting. Please bring a pair of sturdy
walking shoes. Children under 8 years of age are prohibited.

CAS402-101 SAHARA CAMEL TREK VIA OUARZAZATE 4 days/3 nights
Ouarzazate lies on the
confluence of three important
oasis valley systems: the
Ouarzazate, Dadès and Drâa.
As one travels southeast from
Ouarzazate to Zagora, the
contrast of bare sun-baked rock
with the lush green of the palm
groves forms some beautiful
scenery. A labyrinth of irrigation
channels feeds the fertile, palm-
shaded terraces of farmland in
the Drâa valley. Dates are the primary commercial crop, and the best eating
dates are found in Zagora. The Drâa Valley has always been strongly influenced
and interlinked with the destiny of the surrounding nomadic tribes. It has served
as a stepping-stone for Saharan explorations since the 10thcentury. Your
experience in the Sahara will include an overnight in a nomad camp and a camel trek into the desert.
Aït Benhaddou is a 'fortified city', or ksar, along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in present-
day Morocco. It is known for its Kasbahs and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and several films have been
shot there, such as The Last Temptation of Christ, The Mummy, Gladiator, Alexander, Kingdom of Heaven and Prince of Persia.
Marrakech is the gateway city to the Sahara. Legend and fact both contribute to the explanation of Marrakech’s unique
character. The town’s origins are attributed to the development of an oasis, which grew out of the refuse of caravans from the
south, whose food supplies contained dates. The palm groves that sprang up provided an ideal place for the Saharan nomad
Almoravids to settle. Since this time, Marrakech has seen many dynasties and fortunes rise and fall, resulting in a remarkably
beautiful city which has not only become the capital of southern Morocco but an integral city to the Islamic world. The cultural,

CAS 201-101 MARRAKECH & OURIKA VALLEY – BERBER FAMILY VISIT 2 days/1 night
Situated at the foot of the tall Atlas Mountain range is the most famous imperial
city of Morocco, Marrakech. Upon arrival, proceed on foot into the ancient city,
also known as the Medina.
Explore the Mosque of the Koutoubia (the booksellers), erected in the XII century.
From its imposing and stupendous minaret, a masterpiece of the Hispanic-
Moorish art, the muezzin calls the inhabitants of the city every day to prayer.
Next, visit the Majorelle Gardens, home to the late Yves Saint Laurent which
today houses a collection of plants from the four corners of the earth, flourishing
among elegant ornamental lakes and an Art Deco villa. You will also visit the
Medersa Ben Youssef, one of the jewels of Marrakech. The current structure of
this Koranic school was built around 1570 and it is the biggest medersa (school)
in the whole of the Maghreb (west).
Lunch provides an opportunity to relax and to taste some food typical of the local
kitchen. Continue on an inside visit of the Bahia
Palace, residence of Ba Ahmed, the chief Vizier to
Sultan Moulay El Hassan. Particularly striking are
the painted cedar wood ceilings. The Palace is
Andalousian in style.
Enjoy an era gone by exploring the colorful and
perfumed world of the souks of Marrakech. In the
lanes covered with reeds and lanterns a wealth of
local handicraft are shown. Finally, arrive at the
most famous plaza in Morocco, the Jemaa plaza el
Fna, where you will find a cosmopolitan crowd of
dancers, cantastorie, snake charmers and monkey
trainers. This site was proclaimed a "Masterpiece of the oral and immaterial patrimony of the humanity” by UNESCO in 2001.
The next day, depart on a great day trip from Marrakech to the Ourika Valley which is prime hiking territory in all seasons. Less
than 45 minutes out of Marrakech you can see green gorges, sparkling yellow wheat fields at the foot of snowcapped
mountains, and the ferocious flow of the Ourika River, where women wash clothes in the spray of waterfalls at the roadside.
Look out, too, for traditional flat Berber homes; they are assembled in stacked villages all merged in the same red earth. The
only vertical line which breaks the slither of horizontal roofs is that of the village mosque, whose minaret towers above it all.
Spend time with a traditional Berber family where you can observe their way of life. Enjoy lunch with them before the drive
back to Casablanca.
Note: Please bring a pair of sturdy walking shoes.

Marrakech is the gateway city to the Sahara. The town’s origins are attributed to
the development of an oasis. Discover how, long ago, the Saharan Almoravid
Dynasty gained the
upper hand on this arid
land, developing
irrigation by creating
reservoirs in river
valleys and, later,
constructing dams.
Upon arrival, you will
ride camels to reach a
nomad camp in a desert
like region, and then
visit a nearby village of
mud made houses,
where people, coming
from the Sahara, are
still living. Spend the evening in the beautiful nomad camp build especially for the occasion. You will be having dinner and
enjoying the feast under nomad tents. Local folklore will entertain the evening around a big fire.
The day after explore the area by 4WD following N’fis Wadi (River), a field of old salt mines, and have a nice view on the two
dams that provide the city of Marrakech with water and electricity, before returning back to visit and enjoy Marrakech.
This trip will take you through the path traced by nomads and will be an overview of the mechanism of their settlement and the
work done to improve their lives.

CAS302-201 FÈS: FAMILY HOMESTAY 3 days/2 nights
Head to Fès, the oldest of
Morocco’s Imperial Cities and the
kingdom’s spiritual center, Fes is
central to the Islamic world.
Founded around 790 by Moulay
Idriss I, many mosques and
Medersas (Koranic schools) were
constructed in Fes. Considered by
scholars to be the last true
example of a typical medieval
Arab town, Fes is under the strict
building code supervision of
UNESCO. Its labyrinth of
alleyways opens to craft
workshops, vast leather tanneries
and richly ornamented monuments. Live Fes from the inside, sharing dinner and
spending the night with a Moroccan family in its architecturally interesting
houses of famous medina.
Four years ago, a non-government and non-profit association promoting
sustainable development, started a project helping 30 families to renovate their
houses that are part of the architectural Heritage of Fes, by allowing them to
accommodate foreigners. A very interesting opportunity to be introduced to the Moroccan culture. Take part in a cooking lesson to
be initiated to the Moroccan Gastronomy and then have lunch in an old palace of the medina.
The last day you can also visit Volubilis the site of the best preserved Roman ruins in Morocco. Dating primarily from the 2nd and
3rd centuries, Volubilis was one of the Roman Empire’s most remote outposts.

CAS 202-201 MARRAKECH & INTERACTIVE COOKING CLASS 2 days/1 night
For a long time, Marrakech has embodied the "Moroccan dream" of the most
curious and romantic travelers. On this excursion you will explore the ancient city,
the Medina. You’ll visit the Mosque of the Koutoubia (or of the booksellers), a
masterpiece of the Hispanic-Moorish art, that calls the inhabitants of the city every
day to prayer.
Your next stop is the Majorelle Gardens, home to the late Yves Saint Laurent which
today houses a collection of plants from the four corners of the earth, flourishing
among elegant ornamental lakes and an Art Deco villa. You will also visit the
Medersa Ben Youssef, one of the jewels of Marrakech, a Koranic school built
around 1570. It is the biggest medersa (school) in the whole of the Maghreb
(west). Lunch gives you an opportunity to relax and to taste some food typical of the
local kitchen.
In the afternoon, discover the souks of the Medina where a wealth of local
handicraft are shown. Finally, arrive at the most famous plaza in Morocco, the Jemaa plaza el Fna, where you will find a
cosmopolitan crowd of dancers, cantastorie, snake charmers and monkey trainers. Known as ‘the pulsating heart of the whole
city', the site was proclaimed a "Masterpiece of the oral and immaterial patrimony of humanity” by UNESCO in 2001.
The next morning you’ll visit the market to buy all that
you need for your cooking class. Your participation in
the cooking school provides you with the rare
experience of preparing authentic Moroccan cuisine
and the proceeds in turn fund literacy and job skill
training for Moroccan girls and women.

CAS 204-201 EXPLORING MARRAKECH & THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS 3 days/2 nights
Marrakech is the pulse of Morocco. This Berber city, once an imperial city, links
sub-Saharan Africa to the Arabo-Andalous in the north. Marrakech is certainly a
cross section of civilizations, and showcases ethnicity and religion. In addition to
visiting Marrakech, you will have the opportunity to explore Berber life and culture
through several fun activities.
On your first day, see the Koutoubia mosque, which is an emblem of Marrakech. Koutoubia’s minaret inspired the architects of
the Giralda of Seville and the Hassan Tower of Rabat; it is the most perfect Islamic religious structure in North Africa. Next, visit
the Bahia palace, a small piece of folly ordered in 1880 by the great vizir Sidi Moussa. This masterpiece of domestic architecture
gives you a good idea of how the privileged lived during the 19th century in this Imperial city. By the end of the afternoon, visit
Djemâa el Fna square, a multitude of street artists with stalls of dried fruit or orange juice freshly-pressed before you. No one
really knows how it came into being, but over the years it has become the beating heart of Marrakech, where mime artists, snake-
charmers and street musicians perform at every turn. The second day is dedicated to the Berber culture, life and some fun!
Visit a village where the local people will take you to an oil mill and to a traditional Berber house. Ascend on a soft trek to a high
plateau above the village, escorted by the villagers. Upon arrival on the plateau, you will be split in 3 groups that will rotate
through different activities:
Activity 1 – Preparation of Adobe bricks used in the building of Berber houses using the ancestral technique
Activity 2 – bread making and cooking class (this group will prepare what the entire group will have for lunch)
Activity 3 – Accro Park, an obstacle course with 3 levels of difficulty and Aerial Park, among the biggest four ziplines in Africa
On the last day, continue with the three activities before an early lunch and return to Casablanca.
Note: This program is NOT suitable for people with limited mobility.

Day 3: Saturday, April 20
CAS 203-201 MEKNES & ARABO ANDALOUS FÈS 2 days/1 night
Meknes is in the middle of fertile and prosperous plains along the Bokefrane River.
It was the Capital of Moulay Ismail, a Sultan of the Louis XIV period, who wanted
Meknes to be full of great monuments. Admire the ramparts and bastions broken
up by splendid gates, like the 'Bab Monsour’, the 'Victorious Gate' and entrance of
honor to the imperial city. After lunch time, drive through the country side around
Meknes – a lush and peaceful area with gently rolling hills and planted with olive
trees - to the ancient Roman city of Volubilis. After a visit inside Volubilis, continue
the route to the Marinades necropolis, Fès, an untroubled ocean of flat roofs
punctuated by soaring minarets, with a gentle succession of terraces.
The next day you will explore the medieval city of Fès. Its architectural wealth is
evident in the Medersa Bonania whose courtyard is marvelously realized in the
marble and onyx, as well as the monumental door Bab Bou Jeloud. Walk through a
labyrinth of alleys where every zone contains a different guild of artisans: the souk
Attarine, entirely devoted to spices; the souk Nejarine, devoted to the carpenters; Place Seffarine, populated with blacksmith
shops; and the dyers’ souk where skeins of silk are hung to dry in the sun.
You will also explore the most fascinating souk of Fès, the conciatoris, announced by the strong and sharp odor of the hides. See
the extraordinary tradition of dying the skins in great tubs. Also pass by a place revered by Moslems, the Mosque Kairouyine,
center of a famous university defined as the most ancient in the world. The building is closed to non-Moslems, but from its doors
you can glimpse precious treasures. Before leaving Fès, if time permits, cross the Jewish district of Mellah.
