1. Applications are invited from unmarried male Indian citizens for Short Service Commission(SSC) in the Executive Branch (General Service/Hydro Cadre) of the Indian Navy forJan 2008 Course.

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS2. Age. 19 ½ to 25 years born between 02 Jan 1984 and 01 Jul 1989; both dates inclusive.

3. Educational Qualifications. Any of the following:-(a) A Science graduate with Physics & Mathematics with minimum 55% marks from a

recognized University.(b) M.Sc. with Physics or Mathematics with minimum 55% marks. [M.Sc. (Physics)

should have done Mathematics in graduation and M.Sc. (Mathematics) shouldhave done Physics in graduation] from a recognized University.

(c) BE/B Tech with minimum 55% marks in aggregate in any discipline from a institutionrecognized by AICTE.

(d) Science graduates (Physics & Mathematics) from a recognized University holdingNCC Naval Wing, Senior Division ‘C’ certificate can also apply.

(e) Graduate/Post Graduate in Operations Analysis and Operational Research/Quantitative methods with minimum 75% marks from recognised university.

(f) Graduate/Post Graduate in Mathematics, with Probability or Statistics with minimum75% marks from recognised university.

4. Physical Standards(a) Height and Weight. Minimum height - 157 cms with correlated weight.(b) Eye Sight. The minimum acceptable vision standard for distant vision 6/12, 6/12

correctable to 6/6, 6/6 with glasses. Should not be colour/night blind.SHORT SERVICE COMMISSION5. Short Service Commission is granted for a term of 10 years, extendable to 14 years,

subject to service requirement and performance/willingness of the candidate. Oncompletion of these tenures, officers are entitled for gratuity under the extent rules.Disciplined life, leadership qualities and professional skills imbibed during the servicewould stand as added advantages in acquiring second career post exit from the Navy.

HOW TO APPLY6. (a) Application Forms in accordance with the prescribed format and complete in all

respects with superscription on the envelope “APPLICATION FOR SSC (GS) ‘X’/HYDRO CADRE - JAN 2009 COURSE Qualification........ Percentage........% NCCCertificate ............(If applicable)” are to be sent to the address given below by 15Apr 2008. Applications sent by Speed Post/Registered Post/Courier will not beaccepted.

(b) Application must be sent in the format given in the advertisement, otherwise it will berejected.

(c) Application must be accompanied by attested copies of : - (i) 10th Standard Certificatefor verification of date of birth and other educational certificates. (ii) Marks statementof all semesters/years.

(d) Application must be accompanied by two self-addressed stamped envelopes.(e) Application and requisite enclosures must be properly tagged/stitched by thread only.

Integrated Headquarters - Min of Defence (Navy) (IHQ-MoD (Navy)) will not be responsiblefor loss of enclosures, if sent loose.

SELECTION PROCEDURE7. (a) Candidates will be issued call up for Service Selection Board (SSB) interviews based

on their performance in educational qualification. If a candidate possesses higherqualification with better percentage, his higher qualification will be considered for cutoff. Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Navy) (IHQ-MoD (Navy)) reservesthe right to short-list applications and to fix cut off percentage without assigning anyreason. No communication will be entertained on this account

(b) SSB interviews for short-listed candidates will be scheduled during Jun 08 – Nov 08 atBangalore or Bhopal.

(c) The total duration of SSB interviews is five days, consisting of stage I (Day one) andstage II (Four days). Stage I Tests, consist of Intelligence Tests, Picture Perception andGroup Discussion Tests.Candidates who fail to qualify in Stage I will be sent back onthe same day from SSB Centre. Stage II Tests consists of Psychological Tests, GroupTask Tests and Interview. Successful candidates will thereafter undergo SpecialMedical Examination at the same venue (approx duration 3-5 days)

(d) Candidates recommended by the SSBs and declared medically fit will be appointedfor training in Order of all India Merit depending on the number of vacancies.

(e) Change of SSB Centre for interview is not permissible under any circumstances.(f) Any correspondence regarding change of SSB dates be addressed to the President of

the SSB on receipt of call up letter and copy endorsed to Directorate of ManpowerPlanning & Recruitment (R&R), Room No 204, ‘C’ wing. Sena Bhavan, IHQ-MoD (N),New Delhi-110011 (Fax No 011-23011282).

(g) No compensation will be paid in respect of any injury sustained as a result of tests.(h) Return 2nd Class Sleeper rail fare is admissible for the SSB interview, if appearing for

the first time for this entry.TRAINING8. The training is scheduled to commence in the month of Jan 2009 .9. Candidates will be inducted as officers in the rank of Sub Lieutenant and undergo Naval

Orientation Course at the Naval Academy, Goa followed by professional training atvarious Naval Training Establishments/Units/Ships. Full pay and allowances are admissibleto officers whilst under training. They will be on probation for a period of two years, duringwhich they are liable to be discharged if their performance is unsatisfactory.

10. Only unmarried candidates are eligible to undergo training. Any candidate who is foundto be married or marries while under training will be discharged and shall be liable torefund full pay & allowances drawn by him and expenditure incurred on him by theGovernment.

DUTIES OF AN EXECUTIVE OFFICER11. As an Executive officer, you would be at the helm of affairs in ships. Executive officers

are leaders of men, strategists of modern warfare and ambassadors of our country whenin foreign waters. Modern warships are highly evolved fighting machines needingcapable and decisive leaders to fight them. A glorious career would see many highpointsand chief among them would be command at sea. Executive officers activelyparticipate in all facets of Naval operations – above, below and on the surface of thesea. They are specialists in missilery and Gunnery, Anti-Submarine Warfare, ElectronicWarfare and Communications, Navigation and Direction, Hydrography and much else.You can even opt to fly including fighter jets, be a marine commando, dive below thesurface in a submarine or become an observer and operate state-of-the-art technologiesin the air. An honourable, exciting and adventurous life awaits you as an Executiveofficer in the Navy.

DUTIES OF A HYDROGRAPHIC OFFICER

12. Hydrography is one of the sub-specialisations of the Executive branch of the IndianNavy, which qualifies officers to undertake Hydrographic Surveys of uncharted Indian& foreign waters for production of nautical charts for safe navigation at sea. Hydrographynot only contributes towards safety at sea, but also plays a big role in successfulcompletion of various coastal/offshore developmental projects. It is a highly challengingand satisfying discipline. The National Hydrographic Department of the Navy is one ofthe most advanced hydrographic services in the world. Officers joining the cadre willundergo internationally recognised hydrographic courses, which would qualify themto undertake hydrographic tasks all over the world. Those joining Hydrographic Servicewould also get an opportunity to serve at the National Hydrographic Office, Dehradunand the National Hydrographic School at Goa which are internationally acclaimed fortheir modern chart production and hydrographic training facilities respectively.

This could be from an aircraft carrier, othership’s decks or from an airfield ashore. You would be flying machines at the cuttingedge of technology. You would actively participate in all facets of Naval Operation,above, below and on the surface of the sea. An honourable exciting & adventurouslife awaits you as a pilot in the Navy.

1. Applications are invited from unmarried Men and Women who are Indian citizensfor Short Service Commission (SSC)(Observer) in the Executive Branch of the IndianNavy for Jan 2009 Course.

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS2. Age. 19 to 23 years born between 02 Jan 1986 and 01 Jan 1990 ; both dates

inclusive.

3. Educational Qualifications. A candidate must be a graduate in any disciplne with anaggregate of 55% marks. The candidate must have passed 10 + 2 with Physics andMathematics as main subjects.

4. Physical Standards(a) Height and Weight. Minimum height - 162.5 cms with correlated weight.

(b) Eye Sight. The minimum acceptable vision standard for distant vision 6/6, 6/9correctable to 6/6, 6/6. Should not be colour/night blind.

SHORT SERVICE COMMISSION5. Short Service Commission is granted for a term of 10 years, extendable to 14 years,

subject to service requirement and performance/willingness of the candidate. Oncompletion of these tenures, officers are entitled for gratuity under the extant rules.Disciplined life, leadership qualities and professional skills imbibed during the servicewould stand as added advantages in acquiring second career post exit from the Navy.

HOW TO APPLY6. (a) Application Forms in accordance with the prescribed format and complete in

all respects with superscription on the envelope “APPLICATION FOR SSC(OBSERVER) JAN 2009 COURSE Qualification........ Percentage........% (Ifapplicable)” are to be sent to the address given below by 29 April 08 .Applications sent by Speed Post/Registered Post/Courier will not be accepted.

(b) Application must be sent in the format given in the advertisement, otherwise it willbe rejected.

(c) Application must be accompanied by attested copies of : - (i) 10th StandardCertificate for verification of date of birth and other educational certificates. (ii)Marks statement of all semesters/years.

(d) Application and requisite enclosures must be properly tagged/stitched by threadonly. Integrated Headquarters - Min of Defence (Navy) (IHQ-MoD (Navy)) will notbe responsible for loss of enclosures, if sent loose.

(e) Male Applicants should endorse their willingness to be considered for Executive(General Service) in case not qualifying Aviation medicals. The candidature wouldbe considered for the same if educationally qualified.

SELECTION PROCEDURE7. (a) Candidates will be issued call up for Service Selection Board (SSB) interviews

based on their performance in educational qualification. If a candidate possesseshigher qualification with better percentage, his higher qualification will be consideredfor cut off. Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Navy) (IHQ-MoD (Navy))reserves the right to short-list applications and to fix cut off percentage withoutassigning any reason. No communication will be entertained on this account

(b) SSB interviews for short-listed candidates will be scheduled during Aug - Dec 08at Bangalore.

(c) The total duration of SSB interviews is five days, consisting of stage I (Day one)and stage II (Four days). Stage I Tests, consist of Intelligence Tests, PicturePerception and Group Discussion Tests.Candidates who fail to qualify in Stage I willbe sent back on the same day from SSB Centre. Stage II Tests consists ofPsychological Tests, Group Task Tests and Interview. Successful candidates willthereafter undergo Aviation Medical Examination .

(d) Candidates recommended by the SSBs and declared medically fit will be appointedfor training in Order of all India Merit depending on the number of vacancies.

(e) Male candidates not cleared Aviation medicals if opted for Short Service (Executive)may be considered for the same, if qualified medically & educationally (BE/BTech/B.Sc (Phy & Maths) provided vacancies exist and based on their position in themerit list.

( f) Change of SSB Centre for interview is not permissible under any circumstances.(g) Any correspondence regarding change of SSB dates be addressed to the President

of the SSB on receipt of call up letter and copy endorsed to Directorate of ManpowerPlanning & Recruitment (OI&R), Room No 204, ‘C’ Wing. Sena Bhavan, IHQ-MoD (N),New Delhi-110011 (Fax No 011-23011282).

(h) No compensation will be paid in respect of any injury sustained as a result of tests.

(i) Return 2nd Class Sleeper rail fare is admissible for the SSB interview, if appearingfor the first time for this entry.

TRAINING8. The training is scheduled to commence in the month of Jan 2009 .9. Candidates will be inducted as officers in the rank of Sub Lieutenant and undergo

Naval Orientation Course at the Naval Academy, Goa followed by professional trainingat various Naval Training Establishments/Units/Ships. Full pay and allowances areadmissible to officers whilst under training. They will be on probation for a period oftwo years, during which they are liable to be discharged if their performance isunsatisfactory.

10. Only unmarried candidates are eligible to undergo training. Any candidate who isfound to be married or marries while under training will be discharged and shall beliable to refund full pay & allowances drawn by him and expenditure incurred on him bythe Government.

DUTIES OF AN OBSERVER OFFICER

11. On completion of training, you would be part of the Indian Naval Aviation Arm. Youwould have an opportunity to man and fly onboard some of the most advancedflying machines in the world at the cutting edge of technology. Your primary taskwould be to operate various state of the art equipment including sonics, sonars,radars and communication equipment. You would also get an opportunity to participatein all facets of Naval operations onboard the “eyes of the fleet”- the Long RangeMaritime Patrol aircraft. An honourable exciting and adventurous life awaits you asan Observer in the Navy.
