Driving Standards: Remarks

ProSTEP iViP :

• ISO 10303-242 (STEP AP 242)– incl. AP 239/PLCS Harmonization

– incl. AutomationML Harmonization

• ISO 14306 (JT)

• OMG ReqIF

• FMI, OSLC and more …

Standardization for Business Success

Open standards (ISO)• assure reliability and stability

• assure protection of investments (of users and vendors)

• stimulate market situation and promote competition

• reduce dependency on individual vendors

JT and STEP: Automotive Position• Industry requires standard-based visualization solutions: JT 9.5

• JT needs powerful XML-backbone: STEP

• STEP AP 242 XML and JT will enable lightweight data exchange

– STEP AP 242 XML for assembly, meta, kinematic data etc.

– JT as lightweight visualization format for 3D industrial data

ProSTEP iViP Study: Gathering Industrial Aims & Pains

• Conducting a cross-branch field study for gathering industrial needs– Aerospace: Airbus

– Automotive OEM: Audi, BMW, Daimler

– Automotive Supplier: Continental, Dräxlmaier, ZF

– White Goods: Miele

– Electronics: TE Connectivity

• Prioritizing industrial aims and needs for action – Production Planning

– Product Engineering

– Facility Planning

– Manufacturing Execution & Logistics

• Proposing the Big Picture & Solutions

ProSTEP iViP Study: Key Findings

6/8/2015© ProSTEP iViP e.V. 18

The investigated domains of „Digital

Manufacturing“ shall be better linked with– Integrated Data Management and shared information base

– Integrated processes for seamless information and

knowledge transfer

Need for action of standardization of– Exchange formats

– Collaboration solutions

– Easy re-usable information in other disciplines

– Opportunities for cross-domain viewing of simulation results

and distribution

From the identified „Key Findings“ 31 detailed

requirements have been derived for further

analysis

Conclusions

Conclusions

• The bridge between Planet “Engineering” and “Production” is not build yet.

• But the key-homework is done

– We (better) understand what is needed where and when, in which quantity …

– Powerful standards exist, ready to be applied on each “planet”

• Engineering: ReqIF, STEP, JT, FMI etc.

• Production: OPC UA, AutomationML etc.

They can use each other.

• We can build deep information chains.

For gluing along the Life Cycle standards like PLCS and OSLC exist

Call for Action

• Provide Value and Visions to the Industry and to the Costumer

– Without concrete use cases you can provide everything, especially money-burner.

• Take the whole Product Life Cycle into account

– Industry 4.0 without taking Engineering into account is jumped too short

• Functionality and 70% of costs are fixed be Engineering

• Respect & Bridging needed

– Provide value & service to the Customer, incorporate maintenance, recycling etc.

• Use / Orchestrate the existing Standards

– Become active, provide your requirements, use cases, (pilot) experiences

– Think Pareto

Some Final Thoughts

• There is nothing permanent except change [Heraklit of Ephesus (540 - 480 B.C.)]

– Trying to solve new challenges with old methods may fail.

– Training and educating of people is inevitable.

• Information is the oil of the future. Let it flow!

– But do not forget to let benefit everybody equivalent. People are – per se – egoists.

• The welfare of the people should be in the foreground.
