The Contemporary Learning Hub at Meridan State College is proud to bring you Infinite Ideas –The 2017 Online Numeracy Festival. This festival brings together leading educators from across Australia to share best practice and innovative, research based strategies for improving numeracy learning outcomes in your school. Topics this year cover everything from messy problem solving to fostering proportional reasoning. The program also explores how digital technologies can be leveraged to engage students in mathematical thinking. Session facilitators include Professor Peter Sullivan, Eddie Woo, Dr Leica Bragg and a range of other researchers and educators from schools and universities across Australia.

The program will run over a four week period in August with numerous sessions on offer each week. Sessions in the program can be watched live or as on demand recordings. Recordings from the festival will be available online for six months after the festival and festival participants will receive the links to the recorded versions of the sessions at the end of each week. This makes the festival a flexible source of high quality professional development for schools.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

FESTIVAL OVERVIEW

HOW TO REGISTER

Registrations for the festival can be made via the Contemporary Learning Hub site at:

www.contemporarylearninghub.com

The festival has a one cost per school rate that enables a school to register and have unlimited members of staff access festival sessions live or via recording from multiple locations. There are also registration options available for individual teachers, relief teachers and students.

HOW TO ACCESS THE FESTIVAL

In the week prior to the festival, all registered participants and schools will receive an email containing the link and password to the festival site . This site will contain the links and passwords for each of the live and recorded sessions. It will also contain information about how participants can access a test session to test their connection. These test sessions enable our team to support you prior to the festival to ensure there won’t be technical issues when you try to access a live session. All sessions for the festival are recorded so if you miss a session or have a problem connecting, you will be able to watch it on demand at the end of the week. Recordings will be available for six months after the festival.

PARTICIPANT FEEDBACK

FROM OUR FESTIVALS

I have just completed eight sessions of the Online Festival and my notebook is jam packed full of ideas and suggestions. Most of the sessions I watched were the recorded ones, due to busy work and family life, but I am very happy that I was able to do that.

Cheryl – Augusta State School

I want to thank you for a fantastic festival. I have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions that I've done so far. I am slowly working my way through the ones I missed and will probably revisit a few sessions again .. and again. I have gathered so many ideas from the sessions. My favourite thing from the festival was the enthusiasm of the presenters about their topic and their many ideas that they were so willing to share. Again thank you and looking forward to further PD.

Messy problem solving with tiered questions (Years 4-9)Peter Carmichael - Regional Support HOD - Australian CurriculumNorth Coast Region - DET

Problem solving in the curriculum is much more than solving worded problems. But, working with worded problems remains a focus in our classrooms. The See-Plan-Do-Check approach to problem-solving has been a popular method for this purpose for over a half a century. In this session, Peter proposes and demonstrates an alternative approach. Messy problem-solving is based on the work of Professor Peter Sullivan. It offers an authentic, manageable and concise method for students. Pairing messy problem solving with tiered questions can provide a powerful way to differentiate problem-solving in your classroom. If you want to try a new approach to solving worded problems, join this session with Peter.

Join us for our Festival Welcome and be taken on a guided digital tour of current and emerging technologies that show how now more than ever our students need to have numerate futures. Consider how you can use digital technologies and current and emerging technology driven real life contexts to engage, support and challenge your learners in mathematical thinking.

Join us online for the Festival Welcome and our first session where Amos Cowling from Currimundi State School will share how Currimundi has improved student learning outcomes through the involvement in the NCR Fluency with Number Facts Project. This project was implemented in response to persistent and widespread feedback from teachers that fluency and confidence with basic facts is impacting negatively on students’ capacity in other areas of Mathematics and Problem Solving. A key focus of the project was to identify high-yield classroom practices that increase students’ fluency with number facts. Key strategies Amos will share will include explicit teaching, regular practice through engaging activities/games, number talks and student self-monitoring. Amos will also explain the key strategies teachers should teach and how they align to different number facts and the research behind number facts
