OVERVIEW:Third grade students had been reading a collection of fiction and nonfiction storiesdealing with the topic of economics during their reading class. The students mostrecently read a fictional story about the life of a dollar bill. They then proceeded to writetheir own narratives about a day in their life as a dollar bill.

After learning about money and economics in both social studies and in reading, students were instructed to create their own business using the knowledge that theyhad obtained throughout the entire economics unit.

FINAL PRODUCT:Working in pairs, students will effectively use Microsoft Word and/or Microsoft Paint toproduce a business plan and an advertisement for their business. Students will usepictures to enhance the overall appearance of their advertisement. Students will also

effectively use the units pathfinder for ideas and information:http://www.pageflakes.com/yesthelibraryrocks/

be a challenge for working with those teachers who do not have the same time as youto plan. We were able to quickly decide what would be an appropriate assignment for

    the students.

The students did really well with this assignment. They tried really hard to do their bestand were very creative with their choices of businesses. In partnering the students up,we allowed them to pick their own partners. Most of them picked other students thatthey normally wouldnt work with (they were encouraged to pick someone that was ahard worker and someone they wouldnt get into trouble with). I was worried at firstbecause I was afraid one student would be doing all of the work while the other took a

break. This was not the case. Both students in ALL partnerships worked very hard toget the job done. All student partnerships turned in their assignments on time andcomplete. This is rare!

I believe that the students really enjoyed the process of creating their own businesses, especially making the advertisements. I was asked more than once if they would beallowed to use ClipArt, WordArt, etc. for other projects in the future. They were reallyexcited when I told them yes!

My only wish for this project was that we had more time to complete it. It was verydifficult to get a time in the already booked for two months computer lab, so we werestuck with whatever small time frames were left. We made it work, but it seemed like thestudents felt they were rushed. I know I felt like I was going nonstop!
