IntroductionOne of the most important activities for researchers, including chemists, is literaturesearching and analysis. The number of journals currently being published, 40,000according to Markusova (2003), monographs and other electronic products can barelybe conceived. A scientist who accepts the present day challenges of disseminatingscientific knowledge must orient himself in the vast ocean of information sources. sciences, including: mathematics, cybernetics, informatics, quantum mechanics andquantum chemistry, physics, electronics, materials science, planets and space science, biology (including cell one), biophysics, biochemistry, biotechnology, soil science, immunology, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, toxicology, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, medicine, geochemistry, mineralogy, petrography, lithology, hydrology, oceanology, limnology, ecology and environmental science, etc. That is why chemists are interested in web resources in both chemistry and the naturalsciences.

DiscussionInformation about the development and use of the internet, and about web resourcesSome well-known journals deal with the development and application of the internet, including the scientific and educational aspects of this, for example: World Wide Web(Kluwer Academic Publishers), Web Semantics: Science, Services and Agents in theWorld Wide Web (Elsevier Science), El Profesional de la Informacion (Swets &Zeitlinger Publishers), Ad Hoc Networks (Elsevier Science), The Internet and HigherEducation (Elsevier Science), Journal of Electronic Resources in Medical Libraries (TheHaworth Press, Inc.), Journal of Internet Cataloging (The Haworth Press, Inc.), TheSerials Librarian (The Haworth Press, Inc.), Library (liber.ru/journal/biblioteka.htm;www.liber.ru/jornal/biblioteka.htm) (Libereya, Moscow; liber.ru; www.liber.ru).

Emerald Group Publishing Limited publishes Internet Research, OnlineInformation Review, The Electronic Library, Program: Electronic Library andInformation Systems, as well as a series of journals on information management, library collection development and management, library management and informationservices, and library technology.

From January 2005, IPSI Belgrade Ltd (ipsi.co.yu; www.ipsi.co.yu) beganpublication of the journals IPSI Transactions on Internet Research and IPSITransactions on Advanced Research (internetjournals.net; www.internetjournals.net)which cover all aspects of information and communication technology use, with specialemphasis on multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary research.

The journal Trends in Analytical Chemistry (Elsevier Science) includes anInternet-column. A series of articles (Glander-Hobel, 2002; Volgt and Welzl, 2002; Kahnand Drey, 2002; Drey and Kahn, 2002; Vallmitjana, 2004) are dedicated to informationsearches and web resources in chemistry. Shirokova and Kolotov (2001) givegeneralized information about resources in analytical chemistry. Evtyugin andBudnikov (2002) consider web resources pertaining to biosensors. Jelic et al. (2003)review macromolecular databases as a background to bioinformatics. The paper bySempere et al. (2004) is devoted to internet searches for information on the subject ofchemical safety. Electronic Green Journal gives a comprehensive coverage ofenvironmentally related world wide web sites, electronic journals, publications, andother resources related to environmental issues (e.g. Shrode, 2004). Environmentaleducation resources and information are reviewed in the papers Ermakov and Kalinin(2000) and Morgun (2005). The role of the web as a tool for the logical and unifiedorganization of chemistry information is discussed by Wife (1999). According to Wife, the web will probably become the primary method for the exchange of chemicalinformation.

Internet journalsCurrently, science is characterized by the production, accumulation and distribution ofa rapidly increasing wealth of information. In chemistry, this consists of: experimentaltechniques and the results of assays and theoretical evaluations; information on theproperties and reactivity of newly synthesized compounds and materials; andinformation on the establishment of predictive quantitative structure/propertyrelationships. The number of new compounds increases in exponential manner; in1999 there were about 18 million known compounds (Wife, 1999).

Online publications services have developed in reseponse to the huge increase inthis wealth of information.

In addition to the electronic versions of all of the serious scientific journals, aconsiderable number of internet based journals are published.

Amongst these are the following: Internet Journal of Chemistry (ijc.com; www.ijc.com) (Info Trust Production), Internet Electronic Journal of Molecular Design(biochempress.com; www.biochempress.com), Combinatorial Chemistry – An OnlineJournal (Elsevier Science), Academic Open Internet Journal (acadjournal.com; www.acadjournal.com) (Technical College, Bourgas Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov University,Bourgas, Bulgaria; btu.bg/homeen.html; www.btu.bg/homeen.html), The InternetJournal of Vibrational Spectroscopy (www.ijvs.com) (Ventacon Ltd; www.ventacon.com), e-Polymers (e-polymers.org; www.e-polymers.org), Electronic Notes in TheoreticalComputer Science (Elsevier Science), EJournal (www.ucalgary.ca/ejournal) (Universityof Calgary; www.ucalgary.ca), Intranet Journal (intranetjournal.com; www.intranetjournal.com) (Jupitermedia Corporation; jupitermedia.com; www.jupitermedia.com), The Electronic Journal of Science Education(unr.edu/homepage/jcannon/ejse/ejse.html) (The University of Nevada, Reno; www.unr.edu/content), PLoS Biology (plosbiology.org/plosonline?request ¼ index-html;www.plosbiology.org/plosonline?request ¼ index-html) (Public Library of Science,PLoS; plos.org; www.plos.org; publiclibraryofscience.org; www.publiclibraryofscience.org), PLoS Medicine (www.plosmedicine.org/medicine) (Public Library of Science,PLoS), Journal of Medical Internet Research (jmir.org; www.jmir.org) (an independentjournal, loosely connected through personal contacts with The Society for the Internetin Medicine (internet-in-medicine.org; www.internet-in-medicine.org), IntermountainHealth Care, Inc. New journals appear (either as completely new titles, or based on superseded titles),some of them discontinue publication, or become assimilated into other journals, andmerged journals are formed.

A well-known example of the latter is the formation, in 1998, of the EuropeanJournal of Inorganic Chemistry and the European Journal of Organic Chemistry(Wiley-VCH), incorporating the following widely-known journals: Anales deQuımica, Bulletin des Societes Chimiques Belges, Bulletin de la Societe Chimiquede France, Chemische Berichte, Chimika Chronika, Gazzetta Chimica Italiana, JustusLiebigs Annalen der Chemie, Recueil des Travaux Chimiques des Pays-Bas, RevistaPortuguesa Quımica. For example, Chemische Berichte was incorporated into thetitle European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry, whereas Justus Liebigs Annalen derChemie was incorporated into the European Journal of Organic Chemistry.

In January, 1999, the renowned physicochemical journals Journal of theChemical Society Faraday Transactions: Journal of Physical Chemistry and Berichteder Bunsen-Gesellschaft fur Physikalische Chemie merged to become PhysicalChemistry Chemical Physics: A Journal of European Chemical Societies. At presentthis journal is owned and published by an editorial board comprising therepresentatives of many chemical societies, including The Royal Society ofChemistry, Deutsche Bunsen-Gesellschaft fur Physikalische Chemie (www.bunsen.de), Institute of Chemistry of Ireland (instituteofchemistry.org; www.instituteofchemistry.org), The Israel Chemical Society (www.weizmann.ac.il/ICS),Kemisk Forening (The Danish Chemical Society) (kemisk-forening.dk; www.kemisk-forening.dk), Koninklijke Nederlandse Chemische Vereniging (kncv.nl;www.kncv.nl), Norsk Kjemisk Selskap (Norwegian Chemical Society) (www.kjemi.no/english.htm), Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne (Polish Chemical Society) (www.ptchem.lodz.pl/en/index.html), Real Sociedad Espanola de Quımica (www.ucm.es/info/rsequim), Societa’ Chimica Italiana (www.sci.uniba.it), Suomen KemianSeura-Kemisk Sallskapet i Finland (The Association of Finnish ChemicalSocieties) (www.kemianseura.fi/skksengl.html), Svenska Kemistsamfundet (TheSwedish Chemical Society) (www.chemsoc.se), and the Swiss Chemical Society(www.swiss-chem-soc.ch).

In January 2003, The Royal Society of Chemistry merged the Journal of the ChemicalSociety Perkin Transactions 1 and the Journal of the Chemical Society PerkinTransactions 2 to form Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry. In January 2000, ActaChemica Scandinavica Series A: Physical and Inorganic Chemistry and Acta ChemicaScandinavica Series B: Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry were incorporated into theJournal of the Chemical Society Perkin Transactions 1: An International Journal ofOrganic and Bioorganic Chemistry, the Journal of the Chemical Society PerkinTransactions 2: An International Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry and the Journalof the Chemical Society Dalton Transactions: An International Journal of InorganicChemistry.

The journal Biomedical Mass Spectrometry was renamed Biomedical andEnvironmental Mass Spectrometry, then continued as Biological MassSpectrometry, before merging with the Journal of Mass Spectrometry (Wiley;wiley.com; www.wiley.com). The latter was previously entitled Organic MassSpectrometry.

The journal Microporous and Mesoporous Materials was created in 1998 throughthe amalgamation of Microporous Materials and Zeolites (Elsevier Science).

In 1999, the Journal of Marine Biotechnology merged with Molecular Marine Biologyand Biotechnology to form the new journal Marine Biotechnology (Springer Science).

In 1998, the Japanese journals Journal of Geomagnetism and Geoelectricity andJournal of Physics of the Earth merged to create a new journal Earth, Planets andSpace (TERRAPUB, Terra Scientific Publishing Company, Tokyo; www.terrapub.co.jp).

In 1997, The Journal of Peptide Research (Blackwell Publishing) appeared as thesuccessor to the International Journal of Peptide and Protein Research and PeptideResearch.

In January 2002, Fresenius’ Journal of Analytical Chemistry (formerly Fresenius’Zeitschrift fur Analytischen Chemie) merged with Analusis and with Quımica Analıticaand continued under the new title Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry. The journalis jointly owned by Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (www.gdch.de), Societe Francaisede Chimie (www.sfc.fr), and Sociedad Espanola de Quımica Analıtica (seqa.es; www.seqa.es) and is published by Springer Science.

In 2001, Research in Experimental Medicine merged with Clinical and ExperimentalMedicine (Springer Science).

The journals Industrial & Engineering Chemistry (1909-1970), Industrial &Engineering Chemistry Fundamentals (1962-1986), Industrial & Engineering ChemistryProcess Design and Development (1962-1986), Industrial & Engineering ChemistryProduct Research and Development (1962-1986) are the forerunners of Industrial &Engineering Chemistry Research, published by The American Chemical Society.

In 2000, the journal Community Ecology (published by Akademiai Kiado, Budapest;www.akkrt.hu/main.jsp?language ¼ en) was formed from the merger of twowell-established ecological periodicals Coenoses and Abstracta Botanica.

A peculiar instance of equality in journal naming following a merger is AcusticaUnited with Acta Acustica (The Acoustical Society of America; asa.aip.org), whichresults from a merger of the journals Acustica and Acta Acustica.

Table I lists some examples of journals that have been incorporated into otherjournals. An online supplement to this paper (chem.saratov.ru/pankratov/natursci1_eng.html; www.chem.saratov.ru/pankratov/natursci1_eng.html)provides a more comprehensive listing.

The journal Physics and Chemistry of the Earth (Elsevier Science) was publishedfrom 1995 to 1998, then split into Physics and Chemistry of the Earth Part A: SolidEarth and Geodesy, Physics and Chemistry of the Earth Part B: Hydrology, Oceans andAtmosphere, and Physics and Chemistry of the Earth Part C: Solar-Terrestrial andPlanetary Science. In 2002, these journals reverted to the original title.

In 1997, the Journal of Physical Chemistry (The American Chemical Society) splitinto the The Journal of Physical Chemistry A and the The Journal of Physical ChemistryB.

Rapid advances in theoretical chemistry resulted in the appearance of a supplementto the Journal of Molecular Structure entitled Theochem, which retained the parentjournal’s volume numbering. Theochem (Elsevier Science) later became a separatejournal. This journal was ranked third out of 46 scientific journals in an evaluation, in

March 2000 of titles held in the Russian Foundation for Basic Research’s electroniclibrary database (Alfimov and Novikov, 2000).

The Biochemical Engineering Journal and the Chemical Engineering Journal(Elsevier Science) merged and continued under the combined title ChemicalEngineering Journal and Biochemical Engineering Journal. Subsequently the journalreverted to two separate titles: Biochemical Engineering Journal and ChemicalEngineering Journal.

Journal of Magnetic Resonance was divided into the Journal of MagneticResonance Series A and Journal of Magnetic Resonance Series B (1993-1996), butsince 1997 it has again been published as the Journal of Magnetic Resonance(Elsevier Science).

Japanese with English abstracts, whereas the Journal of Wood Science publishesreports in English only.

In 1997-2001, Molbank was published as a separate section of Molecules (MolecularDiversity Preservation International), but became a separate journal in its own rightfrom 2002.

Changes in the status of scientific journals can be related to the political factors.Zeitschrift fur Physikalische Chemie was originally published in Leipzig. AfterGermany was divided, a “new series” (“Neue Folge”) was published in West Germany(Frankfurt am Main). After German reunification, the journals were united also (R.Oldenbourg GmbH & Co KG).

Therefore, the separation and integration of journals occur concurrently, representing opposing trends in the development of modern science.

Some examples of the phenomenon of journal name changes are illustrated inTable II, and in the online supplement to this paper (see previous web address).

It should also be noted that the site Elsevier Science Web site includes a “Journaltitle changes” section (info.sciencedirect.com/sd_updates/title_changes/index.shtml;www.info.sciencedirect.com/sd_updates/title_changes/index.shtml).

In 2001, a number of the journals published by the Gordon and Breach PublishingGroup ceased owing to the publishing house being amalgamated with Taylor &Francis Inc. It has been reported (www.swets.com/home.html; www.swets.com/web/show) that the latter purchased the publisher Swets & Zeitlinger from the Royal Swets& Zeitlinger company (www.swets.com/home.html; www.swets.com/web/show).

In 2000, the journal Analytical Proceedings Including Analytical Communicationsceased publication, and a section entitled Communications appeared in the journal TheAnalyst (The Royal Society of Chemistry).

At the end of 2000, the journal ACH: Models in Chemistry, founded in 1951 as ActaChimica Hungarica, Acta Chimica Academiae Scientiae Hungaricae ceased publication.

In 1993, the journal Organometallic Chemistry (in Russian: MetalloorganicheskayaKhimiya) ceased publication, and a similarly named section was created in Izvestiya,

for electronic libraries and for libraries with electronic resources, informationnetworks, search systems, databases and catalogues of natural-scientific literature. The online supplement to this paper (see web address previously noted) contains amore comprehensive listing.

The information resources presented are geographically diverse, as can be seenfrom the first-level domain names.

From viewing the publishers’ sites, even the most knowledgeable user will findjournals and books of which he had never suspected the existence.

The sites of a number of publishing houses, search systems, databases andcatalogues allow searching by author name, article title, journal name, book title, byresearch subject, science area, keywords, etc.

Many electronic libraries provide access to publishers’ web sites, facilitating accessto detailed journal information (addresses, editorial board, aims and scope, audience, subscription information, guide for authors, copyright information, tables of contents, abstracts, full text papers, news, etc.).

The lists of publishing houses, scientific institutions and organizations, educationalinstitutions, societies, associations, federations, unions and companies listed in thispaper, and on the supplementary web site, while far from being comprehensive, arethose which make an important contribution to electronic and print publishing outputin the natural sciences disciplines.

Web addresses and the titles of resources change frequently. The informationcontained in the online supplement allows for the searching of resources by both theircurrent, and their previous names.

Access to web resourcesThere are a large number of web sites which offer a starting point for accessingresources on the internet. An extensive list of publishers, as well as reviews of selected
