The path changing modes ofthe new Tweak tool allow you

to push, shrink, grow, attract,repel, or roughen any path,

easily and naturally sculptingexciting freeform shapes. Thisis a lot more convenient thanthe Node tool not onlybecause you don't need tothink about nodes, but alsobecause it can work on anynumber of selected paths at

the same time.

The color changing modes ofthe new Tweak tool, paint and

 jitter, are very similar to theway a soft brush works in abitmap editor. If you have anumber of separate objects,you can select them all andpaint over them with any fill or

stroke color.

Inkscape 0.46 comes with aselection of stock patterns,accessible via the Fill andStroke dialog. It is now much

easier and faster than beforeto fill a path with stripes,checkerboard, or polka dots.

The use of effects whichpreviously required to manually

installed some Python modulesis now straightforward on MacOS X: they all work out of thebox. In addition, Inkscape'sinterface was made moreMac- friendly by the use of adefault theme. This themereflects the changes made in

OS X system preferences(Appearance panel) and workswith Graphite (asdemonstrated here) or Aquavariants. For advanced usersalready having a custom~/.gtkrc-2.0 file, the theme isnot enforced and theirpersonal settings arerespected.

The Paint Bucket tool works

 just like the Paint Bucket toolin bitmap image editors --clicking in an area fills the areawith the chosen color. Unlike

other editors, the Inkscapetool features some additionalfill methods to help you finishyour work faster.

With SVG Filters and

Inkscape's new Live PathEffects, the available optionsand ease of editability toaccomplish various visualeffects has been greatlyenhanced. The picture in thisscreenshot utilizes a numberof features such as Tiled

Clones, SVG Filters, Live PathEffects, Clipping and Masking,Multi-stop Gradients andmore. This screenshot showsthe parameters used on apatch of hair created with theStitch Sub-Curves Path Effect.Additionally, you can see howhandy having docked dialogsis to un-clutter the workspace

The Path along Path effect

can curve a path along anotherpath. When this effect isapplied to path A (calledskeleton), another path B(called pattern) can then bepassed as a parameter. Theresult is that path B is bentalong path A. With the nodeedit tool, path A can beeditted on-canvas and the

result is updated live. This

provides a direct equivalent of"vector brushes" or "skeletal

strokes" features in other

vector editors.

This example shows how thenew hatching techniques can

be used to produce atraditional line engraving froma photo. Note also that

thinning/thickening can be usednot only for hatchings but forsculpting arbitrary paths -easy shape morphing withoutthe Node tool!

Several new features wereadded to the Calligraphic pento make Inkscape capable ofthe ancient art of line

engraving. This screenshot

demonstrates tracking a

guide path to hatch areas

quickly and uniformly; tracingbackground to make your

pen width reflect the lightness

of the background in everypoint; andthinning/thickening that lets

you change the darkness of

your hatchings at any point, oreven erase parts of thedrawing.

vertical guidelines havebecome angled at 0/90degrees. To change to adifferent angle, justdouble-click the guideline youwant to change and enter thevalues. You can also create aguideline with an angle of 45degrees by dragging theguideline from the ends of the

rulers. You can also create anangled guideline from astraight line. Draw this line andpress Shift+G.
