For the past five years, Schreiner University has planned and made deci-sions within the context of a mission and vision statement and core goals adopted by our board of trustees in February 2002. Those fundamental statements are printed on a page taped to my bookcase, and I share a copy with every potential faculty or staff member whom I interview. Though the document focuses on some precise numbers with regard to enroll-ment and endowment growth, it also makes clear the underlying purpose for what we are doing: “excellence in prepar-ing students to live purposeful, humane and productive lives in their work, faith groups, families and communities.”

Plans need periodic review and revision, and this year a team has been meeting toward that very task. It is made up of Schreiner faculty, staff, students, trustees, alumni and community representatives. The group is reviewing how far we have come in the last five years in order to plot out our course for the next five. Indeed, we have been thinking even further, envi-sioning Schreiner a decade down the road.

“Ask yourselves, ‘after 1,200, what?’” said our board chair, Randy Roberts. As we find success in achieving that core goal of enrollment growth, what primary drivers will follow?

No one expects that we will decide in this process to alter dramatically our values and goals. However, we are deter-mining that critical external conditions

Schreiner University has announced its 2007 Distinguished Alumnus and Athletic Hall of Honor inductees. Theo Blue and Richard P. Marrs, M.D. have been named Distinguished Alumni. William Clifford

“Cliff ” Kellett will be inducted into the Ath-letic Hall of Honor. Joseph Love Hedrick will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Honor posthumously. The four men will be honored at a banquet on April 21 during Re-call, Schreiner’s annual homecoming event.

Theo BlueTheo Blue ’51 was once the subject of a story entitled, “There’s Only One Theo Blue,” and that story title pretty much sums up the opinions of those who know him.

Martin Allday ’44, an Austin attorney and long-time friend of Blue’s, nominated him as a Distinguished Alumnus.

“Theo has always been supportive of Sch-reiner and has a great love for the Univer-sity,” Allday said. “He has given abundantly to Schreiner for many years, and his gifts have benefited the Annual Fund, the Alumni Fund, the Capital Campaign, and other University resources.”

Spencer Blocker ’52 of Midland keenly re-members Theo from 1951 and asserts, “We at Schreiner, and Schreiner University itself, will never have another friend like Theo Blue.”

Blue began his time at Schreiner in 1949, and, after graduating two years later found himself staying on to teach.

After being drafted, he was sent to Califor-nia where, after training, he was assigned to the base’s finance office. It was there that he met a California girl and Lynn Stallings became Lynn Stallings Blue.

Even after leaving Schreiner as a teacher in 1956, Blue has continued to assist the Uni-versity. He served for a decade as a Schrein-er trustee from 1990 to 2000, and has been a life member of Schreiner Former Students

Association since 1985, serving as president from 1991 to 95. He was inducted into the Schreiner Oaks Society in 1995.

“This place has been such a large part of our lives,” Blue said. “I’ve recruited many students to attend Schreiner, including my youngest son, Tom, and my grandson, Heath Gregory. I wouldn’t have done that if we didn’t firmly believe in this school.”

During the course of his long and illustri-ous career in the oil industry, his colleagues were so moved by Blue’s dedication that they established the Theo Blue Endowed Scholarship in his honor. Presently, Blue continues his lifetime of service in his community of Tiki Island, near Galveston. Recently, his fellow citizens, declaring

“Theo Blue Day,” proclaimed “Theo Blue has served Tiki Island with efficiency, im-partiality, honor and pride.” This sentiment appears to be universal, for as Allday put it in his nomination of Blue for Distinguished Alumnus, “In my mind Theo Blue is one of the most important past graduates who has ever existed.”

And definitely one of a kind.

Richard P. Marrs, M.D.Dr. Richard Marrs ’68 grew up in Kerrville and graduated from Tivy High School, sub-sequently enrolling at Schreiner Institute in 1966. After going on

to the University of Texas to complete his undergraduate education, he pursued his medical training at UT–Galveston Medical School, where he distinguished himself in both academic and leadership roles. Marrs is board certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinol-ogy and infertility. monitoring of follicle development and, along with Drs. Vargyas and March, devel-oped ovarian stimulation protocols, all of which would play essential roles in establish-ing this country’s second In-Vitro Fertiliza-tion program in 1981. He made medical history in 1986 with the first pregnancy from a thawed frozen embryo.

Marrs was founder and first president of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Tech-nology. He was a member of the Society’s ethics committee, which produced the first document in the United States on the ethical treatment of infertility using reproductive technologies. Marrs has published over 200 scientific articles and book chapters on human reproduction, and has authored the popular “Dr. Marrs’ Fertility Book.” As one of the founders of modern fertility treat-ment, Marrs is considered to be one of this country’s premier fertility doctors. He has dedicated his life’s work to helping couples fulfill their dream of having a family.

His peers have honored Marrs throughout his career, including listings in “The Best Doctors In America” from 1994 to 2003,

“America’s Top Doctors” from 1999 to 2003, and “Who’s Who in Executives & Business” from 1997 to 2003. In 2000, Dr. Marrs was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Infertility Association.

Marrs is a true renaissance man—an acclaimed scientist, an avid athlete, and a lover of art and literature. He is vocal in crediting his teachers at Schreiner for open-ing his eyes to the world of aesthetics, and for many years he has carried with him in his wallet a poem written by a beloved professor of his at Schreiner, Pete Hallman.

“I am really flattered and overwhelmed that I have been chosen for this great honor,” Marrs said. “I really feel that Schreiner was instru-mental in getting me where I am today.”

William Clifford “Cliff” KellettWhen Cliff Kellett ’51 is inducted into the Schreiner University Athletic Hall of Honor on April 21, it will be a moment that will bring him full-circle.

Over the years, Kellett has given tirelessly to Schreiner, especially to the Schreiner Former Students Association. During that service, one of his proudest moments oc-curred when his dream of establishing an

Athletic Hall of Honor became a reality in 2003.

Bill Thompson ’51, who played football with Kellet, and has stayed friends with him throughout their lives, nominated Kellett for the Hall of Honor.

“Cliff really had to battle to get the Athletic Hall of Honor established—without a go-getter like him, there would be no such organization today,” Thompson said.

When Kellett arrived at Schreiner Institute in 1950, his reputation as an outstanding athlete preceded him.

His Galveston high school coach called him “the best small tackle I have coached.” While at Schreiner, Kellett played guard for what turned out to be the most successful Sch-reiner football team in a decade, with an undefeated home game record and an over-all 7-3 season. Leaving Schreiner after his first year, Kellett went on to star as an All South Texas Conference guard at Wharton Junior College, and then as an offensive/ defensive guard at Lamar University, where he graduated in 1954.

Kellett served in the U.S. Army in Korea, where, in addition to his military duties, he played on the All Far East All-Star team. When Kellett returned to Beaumont, he joined Gulf Consolidated Services, rising to vice president before his retirement in 1990. In addition to a long, successful business career, Kellett gave untiringly of his time and energy to a wide range of Beaumont-area community organizations, including Boy’s Haven, 4-H, FFA, and the Young Men’s Business League.

Upon retirement to Lake Livingston with Mary Dell, his high school sweetheart and wife of 49 years, Kellett remained active in community affairs, continuing his work with 4-H and FFA, Lions Club, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

With Kellett’s 2007 induction into the Ath-letic Hall of Honor, which he fought so hard to establish, his dedication to the success of generations of Schreiner athletes has come full-circle.

“This is one honor that I cherish very much,” Kellett said. “I particularly want to thank all of the people who helped me along the way.”

Joseph Love HedrickJoe Love Hedrick ’41 graduated from high school in 1939, after which he enrolled in Schreiner Institute.

Joe was a standout foot-ball player at Schreiner under the legendary coaches W.C. “Heine” Weir and Rex Kelly. After graduating in 1941, he attended Tulsa University, where, play-ing under coach Henry

Franka, he capped his college athletic career by playing in the 1943 Sugar Bowl.

After graduating from Tulsa with a degree in business administration, Hedrick joined the U.S. Marines, and participated in several of the toughest battles of the World War II Pa-cific Theater. He was proudest of his service in the battle for Iwo Jima, during which he was both wounded and decorated with the Bronze Star for exceptional bravery under fire.

After the war, Joe returned home to marry Tillie Kunover. He earned his master’s in edu-cation from Texas A&M, and began a long and distinguished career in coaching for Franklin ISD, where he served as both coach and teach-er from 1946 to 1985. Joe was head football coach for most of his career with Franklin ISD and, in addition, served as superintendent of schools from 1965 to 1985. He and Tillie had six children, all of whom are college gradu-ates, and who have pursued careers as varied as teacher, lawyer, and engineer.

One of those children, Joseph Lawrence He-drick, said his father would be really excited about being inducted into the Athletic Hall of Honor. “He was very fond of Schreiner and the time that he spent there,” Hedrick said.

“It was a very special place to him.”

A Schreiner classmate and teammate of Hedrick’s, Frank Crain ’40, remembers him as “a perfect example of a man who always addressed every activity with integrity, good will, and a genuine desire to improve his community, and to instill these qualities in the young men and women he encountered.”

Hedrick was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association’s Hall of Honor in 1979, and when he finished his coaching career in 1985, his teams had amassed a life-time record of 247 wins, 119 losses, and 15 ties. During his tenure, Hedrick’s teams won 13 district championships, 6 bi-district cham-pionships, 2 regional championships and 2 quarterfinal championships. With Hedrick’s induction into the Schreiner University Athletic Hall of Honor, the memory of one its finest scholar/athletes will be enshrined at the school that he loved and supported throughout his long and distinguished life.

In February, Schreiner University broke ground on a new $4.8 mil-lion apartment-style residential complex that will provide for continued enrollment growth.Last fall, Schreiner experienced record growth with a 13 percent increase in over-all enrollment and a 51 percent increase in freshman enrollment. That growth trig-gered the launch of a planned additional student housing complex that will serve as a transition from freshman residence living to apartment-style living. The building’s design features metal roofs and bricks that will architecturally blend with the existing structures on campus.

Configured in a diamond shape with three furnished apartment buildings and a com-munity center, the complex will be built

on the northwest side of campus, near Hanszen Fine Arts building. Each of the 1,200-square-foot apartment units will include four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and kitchen.

The residence hall will feature a gazebo and barbecue area, along with a commu-nity center that will include several storage areas, meeting and social rooms and a covered patio.

The entire campus community will use the community center.

Collegiate Development Services in Irving will build the complex, designed by Dallas-based WSI Architects Inc. The building will add an additional 108 student beds to our capacity and will be ready for use this fall.

Schreiner Breaks Ground on New Student Residential Complex

in the coming years—political, economic, and educational—will surely influence the shape of those goals. The growth and improvement we are experiencing enable us to ask certain questions in new ways. It is evolution rather than revolution that we face. That said, I don’t think any of the 25 planning participants would be inclined to say that we are wasting our time, and simply need to re-approve the document adopted five years ago.

By the end of this spring, we will provide a white paper for our board of trustees. They will read and reflect on it in preparation for

a retreat in which they will perform their governance role of debating and ultimately endorsing a revised “chart and compass” for the coming years. Most of us spend a lot more time occupied by daily urgency than we would wish, don’t we? That is one of the reasons that I have valued the opportunity this year to first ponder principles and to dream with colleagues about a common passion—the future of Schreiner University.

Men’s Soccer (12-5-1, 10-3 in ASC): Men’s Soccer had its most successful season since Schreiner joined the American South-west Conference. The Mountaineers finished second in the regular season race and hosted the ASC Championship Tournament in early November—a first for any Schreiner team. Despite losing 3-2 in the tournament semifinals, Schreiner solidified its position as one of the dominant teams in the conference. In nonconfer-ence play, Schreiner tied no. 1-ranked Trinity in San Antonio, 2-2. Coach Paul Hayes was chosen ASC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year.

Women’s Soccer (3-14, 3-10 in ASC): Women’s Soccer had another difficult year. The good news is that the team was dominated by freshmen and loses only one senior. With another strong recruiting class expected, Schreiner should be ready to make strong gains next fall.

Volleyball (11-15, 10-8 in ASC): Volleyball had a terrific bounce-back year. After winning only 2 matches in 2005, SU finished tied for 3rd in the ASC West, despite a key injury that sidelined one of our top players before fall practice started. The Mountaineers missed earning a post-season berth by losing the tiebreaker, but

will lose only one senior next season. Freshman Tiffany Miller was one of the ASC’s top newcomers. Look for SU to have a chance to win the ASC West Division next year if we can stave off injuries.

Men’s Basketball (6-14, 6-10 in ASC): With two weeks re-maining in the season (when this report was submitted), Schreiner finds itself in a tight race for the fourth and final spot in the ASC Tournament. Schreiner is tied for fifth place, one game out of fourth. While two seniors, Kevin Deans and Jonathan Young, have been the leaders throughout the year, a large freshmen class— led by Richard Moore—gives reason for optimism for next year.

Women’s Basketball (5-15, 5-11 in ASC): The Mountaineers currently reside in sixth place in the highly competitive ASC West Division—a division that has three of the top 14 teams in the nation. The six top scorers and three top rebounders return next year. We are also anticipating a big freshmen-recruiting class.

Those interested in Schreiner athletics will enjoy meet-

ing with current Schreiner athletes from all sports. The Friday Night Dance will follow, featuring Larry Lange and the Lonely Knights.

As always, Recall weekend Saturday is packed with things to do. The morning will feature the Fifth Annual Military Tribute Break-fast, as well as the Annual Mountaineer 5K Run & 1 Mile Walk and the Third Annual Alumni Tennis Tournament. Campus Tours and the SFSA meetings are also on the morning’s agenda.

The Annual Family Picnic will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on the Quadrangle (with food served noon to 2 p.m.). Also from noon to 1 p.m., Decade Photos and Annual Class Photos will be taken.

In late afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m., there will be an opening re-ception for an exhibit of Hunt artist Richard Rouse’s work, and

then at 6 p.m. the Tribute To Schreiner Legends Banquet begins, during which the 2007 Distinguished Alumni and Athletic Hall of Fame honorees will be announced.

Following the dinner, from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., Recall revelers can bet their last (make-believe) dollar on any of the high-stakes games available at the infamous Casino Night. Winners receive super prizes, and there will be snacks and soft drinks plus a cash bar to keep thirst down and energy up for the whole evening. Complimentary child care for children ages 2-12 will be available on-site from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Sunday the 22nd will feature an Ecumenical Worship Service in the restored Union Church on the southwest corner of campus, followed by a Farewell Brunch at 10:30 a.m., where you can say goodbye to old and new friends and exchange information for keeping in touch.

To sign up for Recall or any of the Recall 2007 events, or for more information, please contact Susan Carver at 830-792-7201 or [email protected].

Schreiner’s International Studies curriculum is literally all over the map this spring and summer, with study abroad opportunities for former students, students, and community members in Germany, Poland, England and Mexico.

London is possibly Schreiner’s most popular international study destination, and this year’s trip offers two weeks crammed full of history and atmosphere from July 9 to 23. Cost of the trip is approximately $2,600—a real bargain by today’s travel standards. This year’s excursion, while open to students, will be focused on former students and their families. Professor Lydia Kualapai will be traveling with the group as teacher and guide, and will be con-ducting special non-credit classes for alumnus and their families on the trip.

Travelers will be housed at the Eckerd College London Study Centre in Bloomsbury. After exploring the myriad museums, art galleries and other attractions located throughout this exciting city (the British Museum is one and a half blocks away), travelers can plan several day excursions around southern England—to Oxford or Cambridge, Bath, Stratford-on-Avon, Salisbury and Stonehenge or down to the coast to Brighton or Dover. These day outings are fun and reasonably priced. Also planned is a one-day excursion to Paris.

However, coming up first in May is a two-week trip to Germany and Poland. There will be an intensive agenda awaiting those who choose to travel with Schreiner Assistant Professor Sara Schmidt from May 16–28. The focus of this odyssey is to acquire an in-depth understanding of the true scope and nature of the Holocaust that enveloped these countries and the rest of Europe during World War II. While there will be ample time during the trip for

enjoying all of the traditional pleasures associated with traveling in Europe—exploring unfamiliar cities, meeting and talking with people from different backgrounds, and immersing yourself in unfamiliar but welcoming cultures—there will also be oppor-tunities to achieve a unique perspective on one of the landmark moments in human history through professionally escorted visits to concentration camps with names that still send a chill up the spine—names like Buchenwald, Treblinka, and Auschwitz. The cost of the trip is $3,139 plus tuition for students and $3,595 for others.

Also scheduled for May, Schreiner’s annual two-week trip to San Miguel de Allende, led by Dr. Kathleen Hudson, will feature a stay at Mansion de Bosque, a world-famous hotel widely celebrated for its excellent food and comfortable accommodations. Offering a combination of innovative learning, spontaneous adventure and serious fun, these trips have become favorites of both current and former students alike. On this year’s trip, Hudson will be teaching a course entitled “Learning Through Writing,” which will enable students to focus on their experiences through innovative writing techniques. In addition to class time, participants will enjoy swim-ming and bathing at a nearby hot springs, a day trip to Guanajuato—the fabled city of mummies—and overnight trips to nearby classical Mexican cities and towns like Morelia and Patzcuaro. The estimated cost of the trip is $1,450, plus an additional tuition charge for students.

For more information on any of these trips, or to make reservations, please call Martha York, director of the Center for Innovative Living, at 830-792-7352 or e-mail [email protected].

Each year, Schreiner University recognizes its close friends who have supported the University during the last calendar year in its Honor Roll of Donors.

Mrs. Masel Quinn is one of those people.

Not only has she given generously for the past 30 years to the Hill Country College Fund, she also served on the University’s board of trustees.

Speaking of the Hill Country College Fund, Quinn said, “If we didn’t have that (HCCF), a lot of students wouldn’t be able to go to school.”

Quinn is a shining example of philanthropy, giving not only to Schreiner University, but also to Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital,

the Museum of Western Art and First United Methodist Church of Kerrville, of which she is a devoted member.

The theme of this year’s Donor Recognition Banquet was “Because We Believe.”

Quinn has certainly shown her belief in Schreiner, and the Ker-rville community as a whole.

Her giving encourages others to join in support of numerous proj-ects, and demonstrates for future generations the importance of service and giving back to the community. Because of the example she sets, her grandsons, Robert and David Crockett, are beginning to follow in their grandmother’s footsteps.

At 91 years young, Quinn said she feels it is important to stay positive. “I just love helping others,” Quinn said. “It gives me a good feeling.”

Donors have always played a vital role in helping Schreiner University to provide a first-rate education for our students. From Charles Schreiner’s donations of land and endowment in 1917 to establish Schreiner Institute, to the Cailloux family’s generosity that built our latest academic building, Kathleen Cox Cailloux Hall, the history of Schreiner University is a story of philanthropy and generous supporters. In these pages we salute you—you who supported the Hill Country College Fund, sponsored a student, provided funds for student scholarships, supported Campus Ministry or the Learning Support Services program, or made a donation to our comprehensive campaign building projects, or any of our many programs or projects on campus from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006. Thank you!

Momentum continues to build for the Mountaineer Center for Recreation and Athletics. A year into the campaign $8.1 million dollars had been raised towards our goal. We expect this amazing
