One day, unless Christ comes first, these bodies will fail and our bodies too will be placed in the ground to await the resurrection. Our world teaches us that funerals are the end, and that there is nothing beyond. The world teaches that once you are dead, that’s it. But that is not us. We have hope. We have victory. We know how it ends. We have Jesus. We fight as men and women who know the outcome. We serve and struggle and die knowing that the victory has already been won. That's what the Christian Funeral is all about. It is a time to confess before God and our community what we believe in, what we hope for, Who we trust. This month you will find a Funeral Planning Guide along with this newsletter. Take a look at it. Read it. Study it. Ask questions. And then, fill it out and give it to somebody. We at the church would be happy to keep it for you. Hebrews 12 says, “…since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” We are surrounded by the witness of the saints in Christ who have gone before us, leaving behind their love, their Faith, but not their life. On the last day the dead in Christ will rise never to die again. On that day, an amazing, breathtaking day of resurrection, the cemeteries won’t be solemn places of death and quiet, but of life and joy. I love walking through cemeteries and wondering what it will look like that day when Christ appears. What better thing can we think about at a funeral?

Pastor Thomas Brown

We have hope. We have victory. We know how it ends.

name is on the roster or not?” In a certain way, I am sympathetic to this objection. The membership roster of Zion Lutheran Church is not the Book of Life. Having your name in that book is what really matters (Rev. 21:27). On the other hand, formal church membership is both beneficial and a necessary part of our profession of the Christian faith. Becoming a member of Zion or any church is about placing yourself under the care of the church’s pastors, and making a public confession of what you believe by joining a church that aligns with your confession. Saying you are a Christian but don’t want to belong to a congregation is a bit like saying you are a baseball player but don’t want to belong to a team. It is a tremendous blessing to be a member of a congregation. For one, membership means you have a pastor who cares for you and who will teach you and shepherd you on the way of everlasting life. The author of Hebrews in chapter 13 reminds us that our pastors will have to give an account of us to God on the last day. As a pastor, I take that charge extremely seriously. It is my responsibility to lead you to the Gospel, and call you back when your life or confession of faith goes astray. But, it is also a joy to care for you in that way (Heb. 13:7)! What a wonderful gift to possess as a Christian – to have pastors that love you and care about your eternal salvation and who watch over your soul. It is one of God’s greatest gifts to you, but it’s something you can really only have if you are a member of a Christian congregation. A question that is often connected with this is, “Which church should I become a member of?” Many think that the denomination of the church they belong to is not very important because they think most churches teach basically the same thing. For that reason, the tendency today is for people to “church shop” until they find a church that suits their preferences and desires. But this is not how God would have us choose a church. The most important thing about a church is what the church teaches. Whether or not the building is beautiful or comfortable, whether or not the pastor is friendly, whether or not the music is pleasing to me are things that really don’t matter to the mission of the church. The church’s mission is to preach the Gospel in Word and Sacrament. To do that, the only truly important thing is that the congregation teaches the pure Word of God and doesn’t mix in the word of man.

WHY JOIN continued from page 5

This past summer, my family took a vacation to Mackinac Island. It is a beautiful island situated in the strait between the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan that is only accessible by ferry. As we prepared to board the ferry to leave at the end of the day, there were two ferry boats that pulled into the dock. The ferry that we were in line for was getting crowded, while the other ferry looked more comfortable and empty. We switched lines and just as we were boarding that ferry, one of the workers said to me, “Are you going to St. Ignace?” We were not. We would have been much more comfortable on that empty ferry, and we would have been stranded on the wrong peninsula, without a car and no way to get to our hotel on the other side! When you are on a boat, the biggest consideration you should have is whether it will safely get you across the water and to the right destination. When you are a member of a church, your biggest concern should be that it preaches God’s Word which alone will give you faith that will save you. Finally, it is a blessing to belong to a congregation because a congregation is a family. Not only do the pastors look out for you, but the other members will too. Sometimes people say they don’t come to church because they don’t know anyone. But the truth is they also don’t know anyone because they don’t come to church! In a Christian congregation, there are so many people from all walks of life and all ages that are gathered around the gifts of Jesus. They are your brothers and sisters, and they want to love you and pray for you and encourage you. They also need your love and prayers and encouragement. That is something that can only happen when you are a committed member of a congregation. I hope this discussion of formal membership helps you to appreciate being a member of Zion all the more! Next month, we’ll finish our discussion of church membership with a discussion of why we come to church and what we receive.

Watching over you in Christ, Pastor Grimmer

The biggest consideration should be whether it will safely get you…to the right destination.

Thank You!

Are you interested in Lutheran theology but not sure where to start? It can be intimidating! But, have no fear, our book this month is a good starting point. Zion member Adam Schulz recommends A Martyr’s Faith in a Faithless World by Bryan Wolfmueller. He says, “It is very concise and interesting with short, easy to read chapters. It follows the parable of the sower

taught by Jesus and does a great

job of describing the Lutheran theology all the while reminding us of some of the greatest examples of faith possible: early church martyrs.” You can find this book in our library in the north narthex. Would you be interested in reviewing one of the new books for the church library? Contact Angie in the church office for more information.

Albuquerque, NM – What a joy it was for us to gather together as a congregation on Sunday the 29th of September to officially become a constituted congregation in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. It was a warm day, with not a cloud in the sky. Fifty three souls attended the service, 27 of whom are members of St. Andrew. Rev. Dr. Steve Schave, President Roger Schlechte (Rocky Mountain Dist.) and Rev. John Heffelfinger (Redeemer, Albuquerque) were among our distinguished guests. We were very pleased to have such an outpouring of support and it was during the sermon that I preached of the gratitude that we have for our Gracious Lord’s faithfulness to us through all of

our supporters financial gifts and continued prayers. I am thankful that we were able to progress so quickly in this endeavor and the next steps will include a meager congregational budget and continued work of evangelizing the neighborhood. Overall, we are off to a good start. And although the work of St. Andrew has been going for almost 4.5 years I am pleased to say that we are headed in the right direction for what we pray will be a prolonged stay in Albuquerque. Thank you all for your continued support and prayers, I look forward to being in touch again soon. Peace to you in Christ, Missionary DeGroot

the Steadfast ServantOur family's journey of education, ministry, and vocation.

The 2019-2020 school year has begun, and the

Baumann family is back. Adam is back in class, as are the

kids, and everyone is studying.

Nate and Sam are starting to learn Latin this year, which is a big step for everyone. They've already noticed

some of the words in worship are from Latin. So far this year

they have studied Christopher Columbus, Pocahontas, andBenjamin Franklin.

Sam has been excelling at karate. He is quite serious

in his practice, and his teachers have said he is a great

student. Just recently he tested and earned his next belt. At

the rate he is working it would not be surprising if he is ready

to earn his next belt before vicarage starts.

The kids really enjoyed doing one of

their favorite fall things: apple picking. The whole family was quite excited to discover a

small apple orchard in our area. Apple picking has always

been an activity the kids have enjoyed immensely Getting to

walk among the trees and discuss how God made them is as much fun as getting to eat the apples.

Adam is back in class and has been hard at work, as we had all hoped. He has been able to

brush the cobwebs off his Greek and Hebrew, and is going to be making hospice visits soon.

But our big news is that there will be a new member of our

family celebrating a birth in January The children are really

excited to have another brother or sister. God is good.

i

Thank you all so muchfor your support and

prayers as we continue

on this journey!

-Adam, Meg, Nate,

Sam, Lydia, and Joe

Joe is so excited to share our famil/s

exciting news that we'll be having

another baby that he felt it necessary to

practice.
