Dear Parents,

Welcome to Week 3 and thank you for your support over the past two weeks as we navigate the ongoing challenges of COVID-19.

Reminder - Drop-off and Pick-up

Thank you for your support with the following pick-up and drop-off arrangements:

• Families are welcome to continue to use the Drop ‘n Go zones with staff on duty

• All Prep/Year 1 children will be escorted by Prep staff and/or the student Car Park Heroes to and from their relevant zone at either the Worship Centre or Rim Road

• Families who are parking are welcome to arrive in the Primary School quadrangle from 2.50pm and wait (socially distanced) for children to be released from class and come to you

• As we are still maintaining reduced adult-adult contact, I remind you not to approach classrooms/your child’s teacher at this time – they are very happy to respond to email or communicate via phone

• With the need for adult social distancing and the four-square metre rule, we continue with the practice of parents and visitors only coming onto campus for essential purposes

I thank you for your support over the past five months and look forward to a time when we can resume our face-to-face gatherings and continue to build the strong connections in our community.

Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA)

As you will know, we are a proud SCISSA member and our students, both primary and secondary, enjoy the friendly rivalry that comes from this interschool competition. The SCISSA interschool competition provides a holistic approach to health and fitness as well as opportunities for students’ personal development. It also builds cooperative and sportsmanship skills, collaboration and teamwork, while encouraging corporate and school spirit.

Due to the current COVID restrictions, I have included an excerpt below from a letter to all parents of schools in the Association, in my role as Chair of SCISSA.

OPEN LETTER TO PARENTSI write on behalf of the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) to sincerely thank all parents for their cooperation since school sport commenced this term.

It has certainly been a strange year in relation to student engagement in school and community sport, and we acknowledge the frustration of both students and parents arising from the cessation last term, and the current restrictions in place for Term 3.

While it is not an ideal arrangement with the no spectator restriction at SCISSA events, this has been implemented with the main aim of keeping our schools open for face to face learning, by minimising any opportunity for COVID-19 to be transmitted within and across our communities through co and extra-curricular activities.

The Association is planning to review the current restrictions during Week 4 of this term and will be in a position to announce changes (if any) by Friday 7 August.

Again, we thank all parents for their commitment to our schools and sporting programs and look forward to a time when we can safely welcome parents and spectators back to support our young people in their sporting endeavours.

Strategic Plan

Members of the College Council have been working on a new Strategic Plan covering five years from 2020-24. We expect the final document to be launched on our website within the next month. I commend and thank members of Council, led by Chair, Amanda Yeates, for the work undertaken to date, and what has yet to be concluded.

2021 Term Dates

Some of our families may have already started planning for 2021, or rescheduling plans that were meant to happen this year, so it may be useful for you to have the term dates which have been confirmed, as follows:

Term 1 Commences – Wednesday 27 January Finishes – Thursday 1 April

Term 2 Commences – Monday 19 April Finishes – Friday 18 June Term 3 Commences – Monday 12 July Finishes – Friday 17 September Term 4 Commences – Tuesday 5 October Finishes – Friday 12 November (Year 12) Friday 26 November (Years 10 and 11) Wednesday 1 December (Prep to Year 9)These and the 2020 Term Dates are available on our website here for your reference.

Looking Up

It’s amazing what you see when you look up. Too much of my day can be spent in front of a computer screen: zoom meetings, emails, compliance documents, emails, professional reading, budget projections and, of course, more emails. Fortunately, this is broken up with my Construction class, interactions with parents, students and colleagues. When I look up from my computer, I have the opportunity to engage with someone else’s world. I become a part of their aspirations, ideas, issues and thoughts.

When I step outside my office, I look up. I am greeted by hardworking and loyal support staff. A joke shared or a passing comment lifts their eyes up from their worlds, and we engage as a community. We are blessed by each other.

Around the College, I look into classrooms and see committed teachers engaged in their noble profession. I look up to an image on a screen and see a window into a bigger world, a previous world, a scientific world or a virtual world. Teachers are broadening horizons, challenging beliefs and developing understanding. Education extends, thankfully, well beyond ATARs, NAPLAN or exam results.

I look up, and I see a dynamic P-12 College. Emails are calling me back to my desk, but I am drawn towards the fascinating learning journey of our students. I see children who are yet to be concerned with the troubles of the adult world. But their teachers remind me these young lives are not without their struggles. A teacher aide sympathises over a skinned knee while a Chaplain listens and teachers patiently revise misunderstood concepts. Others are also looking up – students looking beyond their own world and helping each other.

Academic endeavour and personal development are core business for us. It cannot happen from behind a computer screen. I look up and see that it is a team effort. Thank God that so many care to combine for the common good. Look up!

May God bless our community.

Yours in Christ

Chaplaincy ChatThese are the things I notice as I take a slow walk in the honey coated hour just before twilight. Dogs everywhere. Red fur rendered iridescent by the setting sun. A white star on the tip of a black tail (accompanying human sporting black jumper with white stars). Three inky points of a face lost in an orangutan of orange. Dappled sausage in a t-shirt (led along by cries of ‘C’mon short man’).

People made languid by the surprising warmth of the cove in the winter chill. A toddler with downy sunshine halo and mother in flowy floral. Grandmother with silver hair half-gathered into braids, a small hand in hers. Father with baby asleep on the cushion of his belly. A man made mostly of whiskers.

Snippets of sound – “If you ask me, Carole . . . She’s in Melbourne and they were hoping . . . Are you going into your Italian mourning phase? . . . I borrowed my friend’s thermomix”. Hum of boat engines pushing through sequins splattered on water. Barbeque frizzles. Cockatoos (black) crescendo which then fades.

Absolute unmixed attention is prayer; so wrote French philosopher Simone Weil. As the pace of the term takes hold, our attention will be splintered again and again, dizzying us with the refraction. It is not easy to sustain the prayer of attention in our demanding lives. But we can, with intention, craft absolute unmixed moments. We can, with intention, hold these beads of prayer, allowing their balm to steady us in the busy days ahead.

Primary SchoolThis past fortnight in the Primary School has been filled with much joy and excitement as we enrich our students through numerous activities both within and outside of the classroom. Our students are fortunate to have so many opportunities to undertake such a range of experiences.

Adults on College Grounds

A reminder that at present, we have restrictions on parents (and other adults) entering College grounds. To assist with maintaining social distancing requirements, and keeping everyone safe, parents are reminded of the following:

• Primary School parents may walk their child/ren into the College in the morning from 8.00am and leave them with the teacher/s on duty in the Quadrangle. Parents should then leave immediately.

• In the afternoon, parents may arrive in the Quadrangle and wait from 2.50pm onwards – please ensure you maintain social distancing from other parents. We would ask that once your child/ren arrives to meet you, your family leaves immediately.

• Please contact your child’s teacher via phone or email in the first instance should you require more information about their learning or other aspects of schooling.

• Requests for onsite face-to-face meetings with staff are currently approved through Primary School Administration.

Prep 2021 Readiness Interviews

Our 2021 Prep readiness interviews commence tomorrow with members of the Prep teaching team. If you have accepted an enrolment offer in Prep for next year, please ensure you have booked a time for the interview. If you are experiencing difficulties, please call Mrs Lisa Bond in the Primary School Office T: 5477 3402 who will be able to assist you.

Year 6 Canberra Tour

Year 6 students and families were advised last week that the 2020 tour to Sydney and Canberra has been cancelled due to the increased risk associated with interstate travel following the COVID-19 outbreaks in Victoria and New South Wales. It is disappointing news, but the safety of our students, staff and community are paramount to our decision making.

At present, the Years 3, 4 and 5 camps scheduled for Semester Two will proceed as scheduled under COVID-19 Industry Safety Plans.

Thank you for the continued support of your child’s journey in the Primary School.

Scott Moore – Head of Primary School

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent/teacher interviews will be held on Wednesday 19 August from 3.20pm to 8.30pm. Families were emailed a link to the online booking system last week. Class and specialist teachers will be available. Thank you in advance for your involvement in these important discussions regarding your child’s progress and goal setting for Semester Two. We look forward to seeing you there. A reminder that our delayed Primary School reports will be issued on Friday 7 August.

Primary School Photo Day

Monday 7 September is our rescheduled Photo Day. More information will be sent to parents soon regarding requirements.

Rim Road Entry

We are so appreciative of the patience families have shown during our changed Drop ‘n Go arrangements and access to the College in recent months. However, we have received several messages of concern from families and local residents of Rim Road about unsafe practices. With this in mind, I remind families using this entrance of the following:

• The Drop ‘n Go zone should be used by families who have children who are able to exit and enter their vehicles independently, with parents remaining in their vehicles. It is not the area to be tying shoelaces or attending to other needs. In this case, please use the parking spaces in the carpark or on Rim Road itself.

• Please do not call children across the road to cars parked opposite the school – it has been reported to the College that there were two instances of children almost being hit by other vehicles in the past week.

• We have received reports of drivers using the incorrect side of the road to avoid the traffic queue creating the potential for accidents.

• Staff are on duty until 3.30pm and mostly, the congestion has cleared by 3.15pm. It may be worthwhile to arrive a little later and be able to enter and leave the College seamlessly. Thank you for your support to help keep our students safe.

Secondary SchoolParent/Teacher/Student Interviews

Thank you to all families that attended the parent/teacher/student interview sessions last week. In conjunction with the Term Two Report, these meetings aim to assist students in achieving their very best.

The expected time of arrival back to ILC is 2.30pm on Friday 7 August. A link with regard to what students need to take to the camp can be accessed at: Year 8 Camp - What to Take List . Should families have any queries regarding the camp, they are asked to contact Year 8 Coordinator Mrs Selina Manton at E: [email protected].

Semester One Academic Award Presentations

We are looking forward to presenting our Semester One, 2020 Academic Awards. These will fall under the historical categories of Academic Gold, Academic Blue and Academic Improvement. Academic Improvement awards aim to recognise students who have shown significant improvement in their academic performance (GPA) in the immediate past academic semester when compared to the previous semester. It is possible therefore for a student to earn either a Gold or Blue award, in conjunction with an Improvement Award. Due to our COVID-19 management plan, we are unable to have parents attend the presentations. Students eligible for an award will be presented at their year level assemblies over the coming weeks.

Year 11 Dinner (21 August)

Year 11 students are currently planning for their ‘Through the Decades’ Dinner. This is going to be a great night and I know that the students are looking forward to spending a few hours of fun together. Held at the Surf Air Conference Centre (Marcoola), the evening commences at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start. All costumes will be officially judged by Mr Minke, Mr Elliot and myself, and there will be prizes presented under several interesting categories. A reminder that the evening is a ‘non-parent’ event and will conclude at 10.00pm. Should students still need to purchase a ticket, please visit the Flexischools link or contact the Business Office on T: 5477 3435

Year 7 Camp (25-28 August)

Year 7 students are busy with preparations for their camp at our Mt Binga campus from Tuesday 25 August to Friday 28 August. The camp aims to foster positive relationships between students and teachers, and to develop responsibility, accountability, belonging and care among the cohort. To best plan for the group’s arrival, it is important that students have all medical, contact and dietary information up to date on SEQTA. Parents are asked to attend to this as a priority should they not have already done so. A list of what students will need to bring to camp can be accessed at: Year 7 Camp - What to Take List.pdf . Should families have any queries, please contact Year 7 Coordinator Mrs Joanne Matthews atE: [email protected] .

Please note that our staff are available to talk with parents and students at any time should the need arise. A full list of your child(ren)’s teachers and their contact details can be accessed via SEQTA Engage.

Year 11, 2021 Subject Selection Interviews (30 and 31 July)

On Thursday 30 and Friday 31 July, Year 10 students and their parents will attend a 2021 subject selection interview. Interviews will be held remotely using the Microsoft Teams platform. Parents and students will receive a link today regarding their scheduled time.

Should parents not be with their child at the time of the interview (for example, if the interview is during the school day) they can access Teams at: https://teams.microsoft.com/ and log-in using their SEQTA Engage details.

The user name is the parent ID: [email protected]. The password (if you have not reset it) is: Firstname123. An example log-in would be: [email protected]; password: James123. If parents have updated their password from the default (i.e. Firstname 123) then they will need to use their most recent update.

Year 8 Camp (4-7 August)

Year 8 camp to Mt Binga is next week from Tuesday 4 August to Friday 7 August. Students will be required at the Bus Turnaround area at 6.45am on Tuesday for a 7.00am departure.

Students will need to complete a COVID-19 Risk Management Plan prior to the camp. This was emailed to families today, and it is asked that the students bring it with them, already completed, on Tuesday morning.

Students who also require medication whilst on camp (including Panadol or Nurofen) will need to bring it in a zip-lock bag with their name printed on the front. All prescription medication will need to be supplied in its original box with clear instructions provided. Medications will be collected at the Bus Turnaround on Tuesday morning.

Senior Jersey Orders

It is an established tradition of the College for Year 12 students to purchase a Senior Jersey (please note that this is not a compulsory school requirement). The jersey features the College logo on the front and the student’s preferred name and graduating year (‘21’) on the back. Year 12 students are permitted to wear the jersey with their PE uniform at College and at other times specified by the Year Level Coordinator. Students in Year 11 who wish to purchase a Senior Jersey for 2021 can do so via Flexischools or the Business Office. The cost of the jersey is $73.00. To ensure an on-time delivery, all orders must be placed by Friday 14 August. The ordering sheet will close on this day and we will be unable to place orders with the manufacturer after this time. Should you have any further queries, please contact the Secondary School Office on T: 5477 3461 or E: [email protected].

Secondary School SportDistrict Surfing

Last Tuesday, eight Immanuel students competed in the Independent District Surfing Competition at Coolum Beach. The conditions were quite challenging, but all did their best with most making it through to the quarter or semi-finals. Congratulations to Kiara Rychvalsky and Kiera Webb for being selected to represent the district at the upcoming Regional Surfing Trials. Thank you to the students, parents and Mr Bradforde who supported our students on the day.

Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools Basketball Competition

The Immanuel senior basketball teams have made a good start to the season. The Senior Girls team is undefeated while the boys won their first game and had a very narrow defeat last Friday. I appreciate that many friends and parents would like to support our players. However, it was decided by SCISSA that there be No Spectators at these games. Good luck to both teams for your games this Friday.

• Senior Boys v Mt Creek at Caloundra Indoor Stadium at 5.00pm • Senior Girls v St Teresa’s Catholic College at MFAC at 6.00pm

SCISSA Touch

Round one commenced last week with some ILC teams having a bye and other’s having training games. Junior Boys, Intermediate B Girls and our Junior Girls did their best in their first game of the season. All schools involved are pleased to have interschool sport again. Please note there are to be no spectators and parents should remain in their cars.

Good luck to our teams for their games this afternoon.

Volleyball

Immanuel will send two senior girls volleyball teams to the upcoming Queensland Schools Cup in Brisbane. They have been training particularly well over the term break and during the past two weeks. Thank you to each of the girls for their commitment and to Sarah Barber and Mr Bradforde for their time and effort in preparing teams for the competition.

Netball

There have been significant changes made to the running of the Vicki Wilson Netball Competition. This year, no regional trials will be held with a finals competition staged in Brisbane from 3 to 5 October. The competition is capped at 32 teams to enter with direct entry provided for the top 20 teams from last year’s finals. We are in the process of completing our nomination for the ballot.

Athletics nominations – Independent District Track and Field Trials

With no state or regional track and field competitions due to COVID-19, independent district officials wished to provide an opportunity for students who have a focus on athletics, an opportunity to compete in 2020. A district track and field trials event in which students nominate for particular events, will therefore be conducted in Week 9 of this term. Depending on the number of nominations received, it will be a one or two-day event.

Any students interested in nominating should see me in the Stadium Office to ensure their name can be forwarded to the convenors. It is anticipated that students would have finished in the top five places in their event at last year’s district carnival.

Sunshine Coast Regional Cricket Trials

There are three trials taking place for students who excel in cricket in the coming weeks. The divisions are:

• 10 to 12 Girls • 13 to 15 Boys • 13 to 15 Girls

Students interested in nominating for these trials should see me in the Stadium for details.

Water Polo

It was fabulous to be back in the pool Monday night with our Open Girls B water polo team.

We played Matthew Flinders’ Open B team and enjoyed a great win: 16-4. Our girls played so well as a team and had a lot of fun. It was a great way to start the season.

Next week, we play St Theresa’s at St Andrew’s in Peregian Springs. Amy Thompson Coach

Students will be rehearsing at their normal times on the performance days.

Immanuel Loud 2.0

On Wednesday 19 August, we will be recording ensembles associated with the Rock Band Mentoring Program and also selected soloists. This will then form a concert video that we will share with families. A selection panel will choose soloists from those who have applied for Immanuel Loud 2.0.

Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod

From 31 July to 9 August, many of our Cocurricular Music students are competing in the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod (SCJE). We have 45 entries from Immanuel which is an outstanding achievement considering this year, the SCJE is only running solos, duos and quartets. Families who are involved in the eisteddfod are asked to check emails carefully for updates throughout the event.

All eisteddfod volunteers are working hard to make this year’s event successful for our community. Not only will they manage performances, but also COVID-19 Safe Guidelines. Please be patient as the volunteers navigate this new space and remember, we are all there to support each other and encourage music in our community. We can’t wait to hear how our Immanuel competitors go.

Please note, you MUST register to be an audience member. We will keep you as updated as possible with announcements throughout the week.

COVID-19 Safe GuidelinesEmails, which include links to forms that must be completed if you are planning to be an audience member at this year’s Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod, have been sent to families. Please adhere to the following guidelines so we can all enjoy a safe event:

• If you are unwell, you are not allowed to participate in or attend the Eisteddfod.

• All patrons must use hand sanitiser before entering the venue. • Purchase of tickets is preferred cashless. Upon presentation at

the venue, you will be registered for entry and given a wristband

and a seat number. Please sit only in this seat and wear the wristband so that we know you have been registered and that we have your details and waiver.

• Due to the limit of people allowed per metre, each performer is only allowed ONE audience member as their guest.

• Audience members are required to pre-book with the venue before attending, via a link that will be emailed home to families.

• Teachers wishing to attend will need to pre-book. It will depend on numbers if they will be allowed in the venue for different items.

• Chairs in the venue and waiting areas will be socially distanced. • Please observe the 1.5m social distancing at all times rule.

We thank you for your understanding and support towards the 2020 Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod.

Twilight 2020

The year’s Twilight will be held on Wednesday 14 October. The model for the event is yet to be finalised with updates to follow. All conductors/directors are prepping our ensembles to have repertoire ready to either perform or record. Regardless of the format, it will be a wonderful experience for our students.

State Honour Ensemble Program 2020

We have exciting news. In addition to students being offered places at the State Honours Ensemble Program in Brisbane (senior musicians), we have 24 intermediate students who have been offered places at the State Honours Ensemble Program Middle School (Bundaberg 2020), which is an outstanding result. Families will have received information directly from SHEP. This program takes place during the holidays at the end of Term Three.

Primary Choirs Performances

We are so excited! Years 4 to 6 Choir and the Years 1 to 3 Choir will perform on Primary School Assembly this term. Thank you to Mrs Marika Doman for all her work with these ensembles.

Stay up to date with Cocurricular Music at Immanuel via the closed Facebook group ‘Immanuel Lutheran College Music’. We invite you to look us up on Facebook and request to join the closed group. By joining this group, you will be able to view photos from performances, receive updates regarding music events and concerts, and read stories about what our students are achieving during their musical journey at Immanuel.

Friday 7.30am–9.30am

The new formal and sports socks should be available by the end of August. Currently, all single packs of navy formal socks and sports socks of the sizes we have left are half price. These socks can be worn until the end of 2020. The sale price is available on Flexischools as well as in store.

Parents are always looking for second-hand items which sell for half the cost of new items. Maybe you have uniform items you could sell back to us? As long as they have the current logo and are washed and ironed, with no marks or stains, we can accept them back into stock.

To aid social distancing, we are keen to reduce the number of customers in the College Shop. Did you know that you can order uniforms online via Flexischools and that they’ll be delivered directly to your child’s classroom?

If you do need help with sizes or advice, please call T: 5477 3457. Our opening hours are detailed to the right. If you wish to visit us, we ask that you kindly wait outside until you are called into the shop. Your understanding is greatly appreciated.

Tuckshop

One of our popular selling items in the Primary School Tuckshop is our meal deal for $7.50

A reminder that the Secondary School Tuckshop is still cashless.

To top up, a good strategy is to add the barcode from your child’s ID card to your Flexischools account.

Tuckshop VolunteersIf you are considering joining our team of volunteers, we have some spaces in the Term Three roster. No experience is needed as tuckshop staff are more than willing to assist. We welcome any time you can give, whether it is once a week, fortnight, term or month, even if only for a few hours. In both the Primary and Secondary Schools, we require assistance from 8.30am to 1.30pm. We provide you with a cuppa and some lunch. Volunteering is a great way to meet other parents and become part of our College community. Please contact me in the College Shop if you can assist.
