MMASS first supplied tank cleaning machines to an offshore vessel in 1989. The client was Amerada Hess. Further systems

were retrofitted in ships chartered by UK based companies including Shell, Conoco and Ranger Oil.

Since the mid 1990s almost all supplies have been to newbuildings in UK, Norway and the Far East, with the notable

exception of two systems retrofitted to vessels working for Petrobras and the complete outfitting of the Stena Don drilling rig

mud pits.

In addition to selling tank cleaning machines the company continues to carry out technical authoring, safety case

compilation and risk assessments of all sorts on behalf of its clients in the UK and elsewhere.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

MAREX TANK CLEANING

Now virtually all the Norwegian designers have opted to install cylindrical tanks in their ships.

Here is a suction and agitator in an MT6000

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

MAREX TANK CLEANING

Even the cylindrical tanks with newish paint coatings need tank cleaning.

This is the wall of a cylindrical tank on a ship less than ten years old.

The paint surface has been abraded by high pressure cleaning and now the mud keys onto it.

CLEANING MUD PITS

MAREX TANK CLEANING

When considering tank cleaning, operators should also consider mud pits on drilling rigs. Tank cleaning machines work just as well as long as they only jet downwards. And transfer of dirty water to the ships is avoided.

THE TANK CLEANING MACHINES

MAREX TANK CLEANING

The standard Marex mud tank and pit cleaning machine

The main material used gunmetal with a stainless downpipe and gearing.

This and the other machines in the range ideally require a pressure of about 8-10 bar (116-145 psi) at which pressure they have a throughput of about 15 m3 per hour and a jet length of 11 metres.

This is the latest Marex Machine manufactured by Dasic Marine Ltd of Southampton.

The material used is stainless steel throughout.

This and the other machines in the range ideally require a pressure of about 8-10 bar (116-145 psi) at which pressure they have a throughput of about 15 m3 per hour and a jet length of 11 metres.

THE VS483 INVERCLYDE TRIALSome results from the surveyors report

MAREX TANK CLEANING

“It can be seen from the following table that the tank cleaning systems vastly reduced the build up of solids within the tanks and would therefore reduce the tank cleaning requirements.

It is clear that the tank with the inoperative gun was in a far worse state than the other tanks.

CONCLUSIONS

MAREX TANK CLEANING

Installed mud tank cleaning systems, particularly those which cycle the product have much to offer the offshore industry.

Correctly designed systems can minimise the residues of mud and eliminate the dangers resulting from tank entry.

If a system, capable of cleaning the tanks with the mud, is installed, the environmental and financial cost of the disposal of contaminated water can be virtually eliminated.

CONCLUSIONS

MAREX TANK CLEANING

In addition to the installation of the hardware, operating guidance must be provided for the crews of the vessels and the rigs, and operating procedures put in place.

Mud tank cleaning systems are extremely low cost additions, with a price of approximately $4000 -$5000 per mud tank and virtually eliminate the need for tank entry. With appropriate operating procedures in place it is likely that installation costs would be recovered within a year.
