Intellectual Development 3 year olds
• Thinking ability matures
• Able to solve simple problems

• Unclear about time (yesterday, today, tomorrow)
• Holidays measure time
• They only see things from their perspective (Egocentric)
• They think illogically
Language comprehension
• Children can give you 2 objects
• They can follow 3 step directions
• Spatial concepts are clearer
Language Expression
• 900 word vocabulary
• 4-5 word sentences
• Combine 2 short sentences with “and”
• Improved grammar
• Understand present and past tense ( overgeneralize “ed” rule
• Begin to understand possessive nouns, i.e. his, hers
• Use negatives,(can’t, won’t), but double them (can’t not)
• WHY???
Math Readiness
• Size concept (full, empty, more, less bigger, smaller)
• True count three objects
• Rote count to 10
• They see the difference between a few and many
Intellectual Development 4 year olds
• Understand symbols better
Symbols appear in their artwork and play
Drawings represent objects-inaccurate
Language Comprehension
• Spatial concepts:Beside, bottom, backward, forward, down, low
• 3 step commands are followed in order
• Plural and singular is understood
• Recognize letters of alphabet
• Take words literally
Language Expression
• Enjoy talking TO you, not with you
• WHY?? is a full question• 1500 word vocabulary• Articulate with some sound
problems
• Imitate phrases they hear
• Use irregular verbs
• Pronouns (him, he, she, her) still give trouble
• Interrupt, and talk about a new subject
Math Readiness
• Rote count higher than 10
• True count higher than 3
• Recognize numbers 1-5
• Identify new shapes
• Recognize tallest, same size, 1st and last,
• Identify coins,(penny, dime, nickel) but, size = value
• Time is still confusing, but understand yesterday, today, and tomorrow better
