    increasing everyday comfort, sounds

    like wishful thinking. but Servodan

a/S has been achieving both for

    many years.

    automatic lighting control makes

maximum use of daylight both out-

doors and indoors - public buildings,

    institutions, industrial premises and

street lighting are all obvious possi-

bilities. a lot of money can be saved

on power costs with a relatively

    modest investment, and extending

the lifetime of light sources provides

    further savings.

    The catalogue

We hope the catalogue will be a

great help to you in dealing with

your lighting control needs - and our

staff will be pleased to help you with

any questions that are not answered

    in the catalogue.

‘Fortunate he who holds all four

aces in one hand’. This was Karl

    heinz petersen’s motto, when he

    established the automation compa-

    ny Sydjysk Servo Spang Sønderborg

    in 1951.

    his expectations were met already

within the same year, when the com-

pany was assigned to supply the

    automation for a new co-operative

dairy that was being built in Søn-

    derborg. This assignment came to

set off a rapid growth, which led to

a restructuring of the company in

    1958: - now a limited liability com-

    pany named Servodan a/S.

Things have gone well for Ser-

    vodan. The company has gained

a solid position in the market for

    its key products: lighting control,

    announciating systems and electric

    automation. Today, Servodan is a

    medium-sized, international trading

    and production company with head-

quarters in Sønderborg, in the south

    of jutland, and a part-production

    with sub-contractors.

    Usefull informationday/night switches

    r0

50 years of day/night switchesServodan is a pioneer in the pro-duction of day/night switches, and since the 1950s has helped shape developments. over the years, as requirements have become tighter, Servodan has supplied the market with day/night switches adapted to suit technical developments and ap-plications.

    BenefitsenergysavingSafe and secureeffective burglary deterrent

What is a day/night switch?a day/night switches outdoor lighting on and off automatically. it consists of a light-sensitive element that registers the brilliance of the ambient light. a switch is activated when the daylight reaches the pre-

    •••

set level. brief changes in light caused by clouds, car lights, lightning etc. will not activate the switch, since there is a built-in time delay.

Today day/night switches is avai-lable in many varieties, so it is always important to choose the right system, to suit your needs and con-trol requirements.

Choice of solutionsbefore choosing a day/night switch it is important to know:

    The installation site (surroundings)

    Load (light type/number)

    Tolerance requirements (energysaving)

    adjustment requirements

Day/night switch on junction box Simple solutions, control direct or throughcontactor. Settings on in- or outside.

    principles

day/night switches have the advantage over time switches in that they react to the light level, not the time. This means that day/night switches always switch on the lighting when it is needed, and at the same lux level, regardless of whether it is winter or summer.

a day/night switch with an inte-grated clock for switching on/off of lighting during the night/early morning is also available.

as the graph shows, daylight conditions change from day to day. The advantage of the day/night switch is that if the need arises for light in the daytime hours, it will switch on the lights.

    Energy saving

    Minilux day/night switch 41-047

The light is switched on/off automatically - only when neededThe Minilux day/night switch is specifically designed for control-ling outdoor lighting.

The lighting turns on automati-cally when daylight decreases below the set lux level (adju-stable in the range 2 – 200 lux) and turns off when the day/night switch detects daylight above the set level.

brief changes in light caused by clouds, car lights, lightning etc. will not activate the switch, since there is a buil-in time delay.

The designers from Landerholm and Lund design have succeeded in making a design, which is a delight to the eye. vertical mounting will give the best mea-surement, because the day/night switch like that will points sky-wards.

Starting from the new design and with much better technical data and new functions we have suc-ceeded in making a day/night switch, which lives up to the demands of today, your expec-tations and not least your custo-mers expectations.

Light perceptionTo make the experience as ple-asant as possible for the user, the light is switched off at a lower value in the morning than is used to switch it on in the evening. We have designed the product like this because people’s percep-tion of light varies from morning to evening. This little difference creates an extra opportunity to save energy without affecting the experience.

External light sensorscontrol 18-093 uses light sensor type 43-198. The light sensor has a 1-10 v output signal, and is powered by 24 v dc.

    ••

When the sun goes down, Ser-vodan’s products are ready for useThe din rail day/night switches on the light at dusk, and switches it off again when there is sufficient daylight.

18-093 has the facility for night blocking, which can be easily set via the display.

Control type 8-092The “small” model, type 18-092, is incredibly easy to use. The desired on value from 3-300 lux is set using the button on the pro-duct – that’s all there is to it…a little Led on the front of the product makes it easy to check the setting, as it switches on when the measured lux level is the same as or lower than the preset value.

The day/night switches now have a significantly improved set of

contacts, which cope with a grea-ter load, so in most cases you do not need a contactor. The biggest visible change is in the physical size of the modules: they have now been reduced to 17.5 mm modules and are now class i.The 18-092 uses a separate light sensor type 43-196, which is designed for outdoor installation (ip 54).

Control type 8-093This control has more options for individual settings, not only for on and off values; the 18-093 also has the option of night blocking, so that you can switch off the light for a specific period, e.g. during the night. This represents a useful energy-saving option.

The settings are defined easily via the display. in the display you can read the current light level, see whether the lamp (output) is swit-

    Project planning

    Summer Winter

Placement of the day/night switchTo get the greatest benefit from a day/night switch it is important to place it as far as possible facing north-east. in this way you avoid direct sunlight and thus achieve the best measuring conditions.

The lux rangeWith outdoor lighting, choose a lux setting in the range 2-200 Lux.

What type of lighting is to be controlled?

you may want advertising lighting switched on early (80 Lux) for the promotional effectThe lighting in a telephone box should be switched on even ear-lier (100 Lux), so there is enough light for readingon the other hand, ordinary path lighting (orientation lighting), where you also want to achieve major savings, can be set at a lux level of 10-20 lux.

Where should the day/night switch be placed?

if you put the day/night switch in a dark place compared with the light that is to be controlled - for example under a overhang-ing roof/in a back yard etc., the

    r0

note that changes in the surround-ings around the day/night switch affect the light conditions (lux set-tings) - for example reflections, trees losing leaves or being felled etc.

ConceptsOn starting up after a mains failure the safety coupling will immediately switch on the lights.

Transient protection protects the elec-tronic circuits from destruction by temporary power surges.

Temperature compensation means that the day/night switch maintains

its rated characteristics within the specified temperature range.

Hysteresis is an indication of the lux level at which the relay switches off compared with the preset switching-on level.

certain types of relays are furnished with negative hysteresis (energy-saving), where the lights can be

switched off earlier in the morn-ing.

Brilliance is measured in »lux« units (e), which is a measure of the amount of light that strikes a specific area.

brilliance can be measured with aphotometer.

Day/night switches - concepts, placing, settings and load

switch-on level of the day/night switch should be set a lower lux level (for example 15-20 Lux).

LoadWhen coupling light sources like filament bulbs and various kinds of fluorescent tubes you must allow for the switch load. When planning relays for light

coupling, you must consider care-fully what kind of light source is to be used and the nature of any starting current and phase com-pensation.

detect movements down to a level of 4-5 cm. it can thus “see” people in a room, even if they are just there and hardly moving at all.if you want the best possible detection of people in a room, occupancy sensors are the pre-ferred solution.

occupancy sensors can achieve very good detection rates, as they use ultrasound combined with pir technology.

Light sensora light sensor has an integrated light-sensitive element, which changes characteristics depen-ding on the strength of the light.

The light sensor sends a signal to the control unit, which switches the light on/off or dims it.

Servodan’s light sensors are spe-cified and adapted to the indivi-dual systems, which is why the determining factor for choice is usually the lux range.

our 24 v dc light sensor has 4 lux ranges, which span from 3 to 60 K lux.

Sensors for lighting controlSensors are a very important ele-ment of a lighting control system, as they are the components that register a signal and convert it into a control signal, thus activating the system.

Make the right choice! There are many kinds of sensors to choose from, and you must there-fore make sure that the sensor you choose satisfies your requirements and needs. Some types can be used inside and outside, while other types should be used indoors.

you often need several types of sensors for the same control.

Movement sensorsa movement sensor switches on the lights when it detects movement and a temperature change of ±5°c. Movement sensors are called pir sensors (passive infrared).

but a movement sensor is not just a movement sensor. Servodan develops sensors that each have their own strengths, so it is impor-tant to choose the right sensor for the room.

Occupancy sensorsput simply, a occupancy sensor is a movement sensor with the latest technology, which means that it can

These common occurrences usually produce the follow-ing problems:

The light is occa-sionally switched off during hours of workThe light remains switched on at night.

    PIR

a normal occupancy sensor is faced with a number of problems. in an office you will not only find noise signals (air flows, seasonal temperature changes), but the im-precise detection of passers by or moving of furniture can also disrupt the function.

The occupancy sensor processes every sound signal and learns it. The result is an “install it and forget about it” sensor, which creates a solution without any need for sub-sequent adjustment.

PIR: Immunityto noise signalsinfrared detection works by iden-tifying body heat when a person passes through beams created by a lens. The sensitivity is greatest to movement at right angles to the beams. The infrared sensor is im-mune to air flows, but its sensitivity decreases with distance and can be blocked by furniture and parti-tions.

Ultrasound: High sensi-tivity and rangeultrasound has an excellent detec-tion range and is most sensitive to movement towards the sensor. The high-frequency sound fills the room and provides excellent sensitivity to small movements (pc work).

PIR + Ultrasound:The best of both worldsThe combination of infrared and ultrasound technologies makes occupancy sensors immune to air flows thanks to infrared technol-ogy, and very sensitive as a result of ultrasound technology.Minilux combines the best of both detection technologies.

    Ultrasound PIR + Ultrasound

    Occupancy sensors

Better than movement sensorsThere are two basic reasons why occupancy sensors are better:

The sensors do not only have integrated pir, they also have ultrasound. This combination pro-duces excellent detection results.

intelligence. in the first four weeks after installation, they learn how and at what times the room is used. This enables the sensor to know, for example, that it must be ready for detection at 7 in the morning, as this is when the employees usually arrive.

Give the sensors a lick of paint so that they match the architecture

brand new buildings and older ones, where people want to retain the colour scheme out of respect for the architectural profile, while at the same time making use of energy saving light control,” says Tom petersen.

The following sensors can be supplied in colours other than the standard colour at an extra cost: 41-227, 41-300..41-340, 41-262/271/272/274, 43-196..198, 43-205..43-225, 44-062, 44-072.

if the customer does not quote a standard colour code, we cannoT guarantee to produce the same colour for a repeat order. The customer should therefore buy extra units for any subsequent replacement.

If the building’s colour scheme has to be implemented in full, or if you want to match existing col-ours, the solution is a special coat of paint for the sensors.

“We offer to paint sensors in pre-cisely the colour that the customer wants, and the delivery time is relatively short. all we need is the number and finish of the colour (raL and ncS) or a colour sample from the ceiling or wall,” says Tom petersen, Quality manager at Ser-vodan.

The painting is undertaken at a professional painting shop, and ini-tially the customer receives a single colour sample (painted sensor) so that he can check and approve the colour. The whole order is then painted and will usually be ready within 14 days.

The latest examples of buildings with painted sensors include the Technical university of denmark (dTu) in Lundtofte.

“The building was designed by the c.F. Møller firm of architects, and our assignment was to make sure that the ceiling installations matched the black ceiling,” explains senior fitter jens jørgen olsen from the electrical installation company Lind-pro a/S in glostrup.

“The sensors were installed on two floors, and there is in general a high level of satisfaction with the result. Thanks to the short delivery time, the painting process didn’t cause any delays to the schedule,” says jens jørgen olsen.

Blue, green and red sensorsServodan has also painted large batches of sensors in colours to match the architecture of a number of older buildings.

“We recently received an order for yellow and green sensors, which was produced on the basis of colour samples from the building in ques-tion,” says Tom petersen.

“i think we’ll be seeing an increased interest in painting sensors, both for

Why use large arm movements– when small ones are enough! The movement sensor for the automa-tic switching on/off of indoor light uses “small movement” technology, so that small movements, down to 10 cm, keep the light switched on.

Energy saving is the top priority The sensor is designed with a view to optimal energy saving. The light can be switched off by pressing a push button when you leave the room (energy saving push button).

if you forget to switch off manually, the light will be switched off after the preset delay. if there is a need for the light to be switched on or off constantly, this is done from the same push button.

The fact that the sensor detects small movements in an area means that the user will not experience the light sud-denly being switched off, even if you are sitting very still, e.g. working on a pc.

All in one!The sensor is a 360° passive infrared sensor that covers an area of up to 140 m², of which 9 m² is for “small move-ments”.

The integrated light sensor prevents the light from being switched on when there is sufficient daylight. With its powerful output relay, the sensor can be con-nected to most kinds of load, e.g. ener-gy-saving lamps, fluorescent lamps, etc. With a 230 v connection, the sensor can quickly be fitted in existing installations.

    r0

Easy installationWith its 360° detection range and 230 v supply voltage, the sensor is designed for ceiling mounting.

The actual setting of the cut-out delay and lux level is defined on a potentiometer. Settings are hidden under the sensor’s lens cover, pre-venting “busy fingers” from adjusting the unit.

BenefitsLarge coverage area = 40 m²

”Real” daylight control – swit-ches off the light when there is sufficient daylight

Can be connected to larger loads, such as fluorescent lamps, energy-saving lamps, etc. (starting current 80 A/20 mS)

The aim for the classrooms was for there to be active control to turn lights on and off. if the light is not switched off after the last pupil has left the room, all lights in the room, including the blackboard light, are automatically switched off after a defined period.

pupils and teachers have been given an energy-saving solution without having to compromise on comfort.

“The most positive aspect is that we’ve already seen a saving of around 20% in our electricity con-sumption within the first six months,” concludes niels christian jul nielsen.

Schools can be offered an energy-saving solution – without compromising on comfort

dagnæs School undertook an exten-sive renovation programme of its cor-ridors and classrooms in part of the school. The renovation also involved the replacement of light fittings.

dagnæs School wanted to save as much energy as possible without compromising on comfort in the buil-ding.

The choice for the classrooms was Servodan’s 230 v movement sensor type 41-330 containing 2 channels. channel 1 has daylight control to switch the light on and off, depending on incoming daylight.

NCC has chosen occupancy sensors for major office developmentsas production Manager for the electrical department of denmark’s biggest construction company, ncc construction danmark a/S, johnny Sander often has to choose between various sensors.

With Servodan’s occupancy sensors, which automatically “learn” the usage patterns within premises, the choice is not a difficult one.

“The new sensors, which use both ultrasound and infrared technology, are by far the best around,” says johnny Sander, project manager.

For this reason he chose these sensors for some of the largest office developments in denmark.

These are the head office of Lo (danish confederation of Trade unions)

at islands brygge in havnestaden, copenhagen, the headquarters of Sampension administrationsselskab a/S at Tuborg havnevej 14 in hellerup and ncc danmark a/S’s own headquarters at Tuborg havnevej 15.

“The new Servodan sensors use double technology to guarantee that the light is not switched off, regardless of how little employees move,” says johnny Sander.

We value our usersin the past he experienced the problem with other sensors that the light was switched off if, for example, there was only one employee left in a room, and the person was not moving a lot while working, perhaps sitting behind a partition or a plant.

“i know that in some places employees have to wave their arms in the air when the light goes out to make it come on again. but we don’t want to offer that to

users of our buildings,” says johnny Sander.

High marks for lighting controlLo’s head office, which covers 4,820 square meters, took the form of a partnership project with ncc danmark as construction manager and main contractor, and the ai group as architect and consultant engineer.

electrical engineer and electrical project manager at Lo’s head office, ib Mogens jensen from the ai group, explains that the builder chose intelligent light control from an environmental perspective.

“We’ve now had Lo’s head office energy-tested, and the lighting control scored high marks in the test,” says ib Mogens jensen.

investigations have shown that Servodan occupancy sensors can reduce electricity consumption by between 30 and 60 per cent.

This is not only because lights are only switched on when there is someone present, but also because the intelligent light system makes sure that the strength of the light is adapted to the volume of daylight.

Sensor mask With the enclosed mask you can limit the detection area as you wish. This increases the variety of appli-cation options, by enabling the sub-division of large rooms into smaller independent areas for lighting con-trol purposes.

    * The detection area is indicated at 0.8 m height above floor level.

4-300/320/330/340 placement and masking The placing of movement sensors is very important with regard to their proper function.

The movement sensor is positioned to obtain the best coverage of the room.

The sensors are positioned so that they »see« the person. doors, rafter, cabinets, plants etc. may prevent the sensor from registering the person.

The sensor is always placed so that the open door does not shield the radiation between the sensor and the person.

always ensure that the sensor is installed on a solid ceiling.

Installation height - range! For maximum required range, the movement sensors must always be placed at the recommended height. depending on the sensor type, the installation height will be 2-3 meters.

by placement higher than the recommended height, the sensitivity of sensors will be reduced.

    Project planning

4-262/272 placement - outdoor The placing of movement sensors is very important with regard to their proper function. The Minilux pir Sensor reacts to heat and movement from people, animals and objects by activating the lights.

The sensor 41-262 has a built-in light sensor which prevents the lights being switched on in the daylight hours. if you connect more than one movement sensor, only one of them must have the built-in light sensor connected.

For optimum lighting control out-doors, the light sensor should face north-east. it is therefore possible to fit a separate light sensor in-stead of the built-in light sensor.

a separate light sensor is also neces-sary if the position of the pir sensor (e.g. under an overhang, in a carport etc.) requires a low lux setting.

Installation of PIR sensorMovement sensors must be installed at a height of 2 to 2.5 meters to have maximum range.

if on TeST, the sensor will display the detection range via a light emitting diode (red).

never install a movement sensor where draught may occur - e.g. in the form of ventilation, heaters, etc.

if the sensor is bent backwards, it may miss the target. Thus, no detection occurs.

NEVER install the sensor upside down. a point to remember - also when you install the lens front.

The placing of movement sensors is very important with regard to their proper function.passive infra-red (pir) sensors are based on a passive technology, i.e. the sensors do not emit any signals, but »sense« what is happening in the area. Two conditions must be fulfilled before the sensors are activated:

    1. They must sense heat radiation (from an object)2. They must register movement.

Factors which influence the detection sensitivity of the sensors:- Temperature in the surrounding area- Speed of movement- heat radiation from people

PlacementThe placing of movement sensors is very important with regard to their proper function.

The sensor, at the required maximum distance, must point towards a back-ground (ground). Most sensors have this deflection to the ground built into the lens system - i.e. fitted flush against a wall at the recommended height the sensor will have the maxi-mum range and sensitivity.

always ensure that the sensor is installed on a firm surface (wall, ceiling etc.).

    4-272 placement - indoor

in rooms, sensors are placed in corners to cover the entrance in the best possible way.

in other words, entrants move across the sen-sor zones.

if you walk straight into the sensor zones, the sensors will be less sensitive and thus scan out through any open doors.

Where very »sensitive« detection is wanted, the sensors must be installed so that the zones intersect.

in corridors the sensors can be combined as shown.

    placement

    Masksdistance to ventilation

Before Installationpay special attention to the location of air conditioning/heating vents before mounting. The sensor(s) must be located at least 1 m from vents to avoid air current interference, which drastically reduces ultrasonic range and may cause false triggering.

Masking the Infrared lens With certain installations it will be necessary to constrain the infrared coverage with a mask. This prevents false turn-ons that can occur when the infrared pattern ex-tends out of doorways into corridors.

The mask kit has three masks to choose from.

. Conference room maskWhen mounting in the sensor in the center of a large rectangular room, the conference room mask should adequately constrain the infrared pattern. This mask is used when a Minilux dT-a is mounted in the center of a long rec- tangular room (i.e. con-ference rooms). The mask provides a more rectangular infrared pattern and prevents any spillage out doorways at the sides of the room.

    2. 80° maskWhen the sensor is installed inside the threshold of a doorway you must prevent the infrared coverage from spilling into the adjacent corridor.

    3. Cutout mask (individual)This mask is scored on the inside so it is easy to achieve the perfect mask for any application. Simply trim away the sections where coverage is necessary and leave the portions where you want to prevent coverage.

43-9X light sensors Choice of systemServodan’s light sensors are specified for and adapted to individual sys-tems, so the crucial choice is mostly a matter of the lux range. our light sensor have a lux range of 3...60 klux. This means that the lux settings can be very accurate.

Choice of lux rangeThe lux range you choose depends on whether you want to control indoor or outdoor lighting.

Lux range above 2000 LuxFor control of indoor lighting. The daylight coming in through win-dows normally has to exceed 10,000 Lux before there is enough light in the room and one can switch off the artificial lighting.

Lux range below 2000 LuxFor control of outdoor lighting if the daylight has reached a lux value of 15-45 Lux, you can switch off the lighting.

Placement of the light sensor for indoor lighting controlcorrect placing of the light sensor is essential to secure optimum control of the lighting.

SidelightWith incoming side light, the light sensor must be placed so that it »sees« the incoming light. When there are curtains or sunblinds in the window, the sensor must be placed behind these.

NB!When sensors are placed outside, there is no compensation for reduced incoming daylight caused by curtains/sunblinds. if the sensor is placed on a building, account must be taken of the shading effects on the sensor.

With daylight coming in from several sides, the light sensor must be placed at a technically neutral place as to light.

The north is neutral in relation to the daily cycle of the sun - east - south - west -.

Roof or skylightThe light sensor is placed so that it “is looking” directly into the sky.

Minilux control combines several func-tions in one single module. The unit is set via a display. used for both outdoor and indoor light control.

Control 36-080The Minilux control is not only easy to set; it also has two functions to choose between: outdoors and indoors.

For both the outdoor and indoor func-tions, the light will be automatically switched on when the movement or presence sensor detects movement, but onLy if there is not enough daylight.

With the outdoor function the light will not switch off until the timedelay has expired.

With the indoor function the light will switch off as soon as there is sufficient daylight.

SettingsThe preferred values are set via the dis-play and the push buttons on the front. you can select the lux range for the light sensor, switch on/off values, cutout delay and test mode. you can also read the current light level on the display.

if you use the factory settings (and have positioned the sensors correctly), the control will work as soon as the power is switched on.

Manual functionsyou can switch function from automatic on to manual on by connecting a button.

you can also have manual off and on via a button.

Just step inside and the light is switched onKeeping all the lights on at full power in long corridors is an expensive business, especially if there is no one there to ben-efit from it.

The whole corridor is monitored by movement sensors. So the light is switched on when someone moves in the sensor range, and will be switched off shortly after the last movement. This saves energy. if you want the lights to be switched on before you step into the

corridor, you can combine the sensors with a low-voltage push button switch.

a separately fitted light sensor ensures that the light is only switched on when the daylight is insufficient.

daylight blocking switches off the lights independently of the movement control.

The sensors can be installed with low-voltage wiring.

AdvantagesAutomatic lighting control pre-vents children playing with the lights

Having the lights on only when needed means major energy savings - typically 30-40%

Lighting control in sport centre with movement sensors

at the entrance door the hall manage-ment have chosen to have the light activated by a push button switch before you go into the hall. as long as there is any activity (movement in the area) the lights will remain on.

The light is switched off automatically after the last movement - in this case twenty minutes afterwards. The cut-out delay can be set from 3 to 30 minutes depending on the level of activity in the hall.

if constant lighting is required - for

example during repairs or cleaning - the control unit can be supplied with a push button switch.

all push button switches, switches and movement sensors for the Mini-lux control unit are set up as for low-voltage installations.

in sports halls there must always be enough light, so energy-intensive lighting systems are installed. The pattern of use in the halls means that the lights are on for many hours when there is no need.

in this badminton hall Servodans au-tomatic movement control has been installed to control the hall’s 275 x 36 W fluorescent lamps. The saving on the lighting bill has meant a payback time of less than a year.

On a staircase you only need the lights on some of the time

a staircase is only used for short peri-ods. With automatic lighting control the light is only switched on when someone comes into the corridor, either from an apartment or the street.

in the daylight hours a light sensor blocks off the lights.

a push button - in the apartment, for example - can activate the light before you go out into the corridor.

Lighting control is easy to install in new buildings or existing installations, since you only need low-voltage wiring at the sensor end.

economising on energy is an effective way to keep storage costs down.Lighting requires a lot of energy, and appropriate light control can save money.

Storage areas are used sporadically, and thus lighting is only necessary where you handle your goods.

in other words, light at the main entrance will always be switched on whereas light between the shelves should only be on when someone moves into the aisle. The light is auto-matically switched off when the area is left.

The movement sensor type 41-274 is specially developed to be mounted at a great height (max. 8 m) and is placed so that it only switches on the light when someone moves into the aisle between the storage shelves.

dependant on the length of the aisle, several movement sensors can be mounted on the control.Max. 8 sensors on one Minilux con-trol.

ZonesServodan Luxstat control provides the option of choosing one, two or three-channel control. This means that it complies in full with the requirements for lighting systems to be divided into zones, so that the amount of light is adapted to daylight and activity in the room.

Luxstat control means an end to units that only have one purpose. The new modules perform all tasks in the field of modern lighting control.

Daylight harvesting with LuxstatServodan Luxstat control is the most energy-efficient, comfortable and ac-curate light control around.at the same time the new control makes it easier to install and program advanced light control.

daylight is rarely dispersed evenly throughout a room. Servodan Luxstat control adapts the lighting in up to three different zones, achieving optimal utilisation of the daylight – throughout the room.

Pre-programmed unitLuxstat control is pre-programmed with optimal settings for offices, conference rooms, school premises, production premises, exhibition premises and cor-

ridors. This guarantees simple, flexible lighting control with maximum energy-saving and optimal lighting in all of the most common types of room.

Completely automaticThe automatic start-up procedure regi-sters sensors and push button switches, measures the incoming light and adjusts the lighting in proportion to the daylight. you do not have to perform any calcula-tions at all.The display on the front of the control unit shows the results of all lux measu-rements, activated push button switches and the current voltage levels.

Zone The light sensor is installed as close as possible to the incoming day-light. This provides a large, dynamic measurement surface with accurate measurement of actual daylight – with no disruptive elements. in Zone 1 the daylight factor is high. daylight often supplies sufficient light, so there is rarely a need here to switch on lamp fittings during the daytime. Servodan Luxstat control takes care of cutting off the ballast, in order to maximise energy savings.

Zone 2in Zone 2 the daylight factor is lower, as the zone is further away from the incoming daylight. The sensor’s light measurement is corrected by the daylight factor, and Luxstat control correctly adjusts the dimming level in accordance with the desired light level.

Zone 3in Zone 3 the daylight factor is even lower, and the lighting becomes cor-respondingly brighter.

What is zone control?Zone control means dividing the lighting into several zones so as to exploit the extra daylight that comes in through the windows.

Zone control is mainly used to control indoor lighting.

Choice of systemThe system you should choose depends on the supply of daylight to the rooms and your lighting requirements. it is therefore important to consider whether particular workplaces or kinds of pro-duction make special demands on the lighting. you should also determine how the existing installations are split up into zones so any changes can be allowed for.

Open-LoopWith Servodan Luxstat control and the unique open-Loop photometry opera-ting principle you can divide the room into up to three zones, where the lighting is adapted to the daylight.

instead of measuring the light inside the room, the sensor measures the actual daylight coming into the room. during installation the light is measured at reference points at user height for each of the three zones. The result is keyed

into Servodan Luxstat control, which automatically calculates a daylight factor for each zone.

The open-Loop photometry operating principle prevents the light control from responding inappropriately to changes in the room. For example, the lighting is never dimmed, even if people at a meet-ing bring along a large whiteboard. The system can thus display great sensitivity to changes in the daylight.

Regulation optionsgreat technological progress has been achieved in the field of light sources and regulation fittings and accessories. The main issues nowadays are whether light sources can be regulated, and what effect regulation has on the lifetime, out-put and colour reproduction of the light source concerned.

The table below contains an evaluation of the suitability of various light sources for dimming.

ConceptsLifetimeStated for each type of light source. a distinction is drawn between nominal lifetime and economic lifetime. The nominal lifetime is the average lifetime of the light source. The economic lifetime is when the light current has reached 80 per cent of the nominal light current.

Light outputis a term reflecting the efficiency of the light source.

Light colouralso known as colour temperature. an expression of the way the colour of a light source is perceived (warm, cold, yellowish, etc.)

Colour reproductionexpresses the ability of a light source to reproduce colour as accurately as possible, compared with 8 interna-tionally recognised colour samples.

DimmingThe need to regulate (dim) light sources may be due to several different factors. you may need to minimise power con-sumption, or to ensure optimum lighting quality and comfort at all times. The re-gulation of light sources involves regula-ting the light current emitted. regulation may be either continuous or in stages, using the necessary regulation systems. a distinction is also drawn between manual and automatic regulation.

Manual regulationis used to regulate light fittings using switches, rotary potentiometers, or ir remote control.

Automatic regulationtakes place using electronic controls to increase or reduce the light current emitted from light fittings automatically.a distinction is drawn between daylight control, which ensures that the light remains constant in relation to the day-light entering the room in question; and time control, which reduces the light cur-rent to a specific level at specific times (e.g. 500 lux during working hours and 100 lux outside working hours).
