Support Every Step of the WayWe recognise that every learner is individual and believe in offering our Apprentices more than just academic qualifications. We support you throughout your course, and provide specialised information and guidance to help you to choose the career progression route that’s right for you.

Our learners consistently provide us with positive reports and we value the views and opinions of both learners and employers, which help us to improve our training and enable us to understand exactly what young people, adults and local employers really need.

Our Recruitment Team will help you to prepare for each stage in the selection process (there is a section in this prospectus to help you get started!) and the process itself is designed to determine the route most suitable for you.

When you attend your induction for your Apprenticeship you will be assessed to see if you have any support needs that we can help you with and bespoke programmes of support will be put in place for you.

Throughout your Apprenticeship you will be assigned an Assessor who will visit you in the workplace to assess your progress and develop your learning programme. Additionally, if needed, you will also have access to our Learner Support Unit who will give you the help you need to keep you on track with your learning. We want all our Apprentices to complete and achieve their qualifications so we’ll ensure the right support and guidance is in place for you.

More about Foundation LearningFoundation Learning is a new, more flexible way of learning. It is made up of 3 areas that are really important to employers:

• Vocational knowledge, skills and understanding (in your career area) and employability skills

• Personal and social development• English, Mathematics and ICT for everyday use

(functional skills)

Our Foundation Skills programmes offer you the opportunity to:• Gain experience in the workplace and a reference from an

employer• Help with Maths, English and ICT• Gain nationally recognised Functional Skills qualifications at the

level required• Progress onto a full Apprenticeship

So, if traditional classroom based learning is not for you and you prefer to learn skills that will help you in the world of work as well as in everyday life then our Foundation programme will be for you! You will gain your qualifications which are from the new Qualifications & Credit Framework (QCF). These have been developed with employers and are the same type of qualifications that are used in Apprenticeships or at College. You can build a number of credits to achieve an Award (6-12 credits), a Certificate (13-36 credits), or a Diploma (37+ credits.) These credits can be achieved at a range of different levels and you can take full qualifications or gain credits to ‘top up’ previous learning.

Accounting Financial Services

Page 11: Intermediate Apprenticeships Prospectus

IntroductionThe Financial Services industry is a really exciting and diverse sector and provides lots of opportunities to develop your skills in your chosen area. Whether you choose an Apprenticeship in Financial Services or Accountancy you will be provided with a platform to launch a rewarding career through accredited training, practical work experience and recognised qualifications upon completion.

There are two main areas in which accounts work is undertaken - either in specific accountancy practices or in a company’s accounts department. General duties are the same for both areas, covering sales and purchase ledgers, spreadsheets, administra¬tion and inputting data, however those working in accountancy practices are also required to prepare accounts and visit clients premises to undertake audits.

Financial Services is split into sub-sectors made up of: General Insurance, Long Term (Life) Insurance, Retail Banking, Investment Banking & Providing Financial Advice. General duties will vary according to the Apprenticeship but you will be based in an office environment or in a retail outlet if you choose Retail Banking. The Financial Services industry is a really exciting and diverse sector and provides lots of opportunities to develop your skills in your chosen career.

Accounting

Accounting is a highly skilled profession, with staff working at many different levels across every sector and industry. Apprentices will take the accounting qualification relevant to their Apprenticeship level. Job roles in accounts vary. You could work in literally any industry, and apply your skills to any business type – from large public sector companies and major corporations, to football clubs and small media firms. Whatever type of company you want to work for, they will always need the services of an accountant.

Completing a Higher Apprenticeship, you can progress to full membership of the Association of Accounting Technicians. You could then complete a professional accountancy qualification with a chartered body such as ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA, or ICAS. Successfully completing the Higher Apprenticeship offers a fast track route onto chartered studies through exemptions from certain parts of the syllabus. The extent of these exemptions is different from body to body.

An Advanced Apprenticeship in Accounting is suitable for people currently in an accounting based role and covers jobs such as a Trainee Accounting Technician or Assistant Accountant working across all areas of finance, although usually within a support role within a firm of accountants or in the accounts or finance departments of organisations in industry, commerce or the public sector. You’ll gain exposure to bookkeeping, auditing, tax, payroll and related assignments, and may also be in contact with clients and therefore require great communications skills.

This apprenticeship provides a training scheme to qualify financial advisers in England, it is aimed at financial advisers who are advising on retail investment advice, commonly known as a life policy, a unit in a regulated collective investment scheme, a stakeholder pension scheme or a personal pension scheme. These qualified financial advisers can be restricted, offering just one organisation’s products, or independent offering the full range of products.

There are two types of financial adviser: ‘independent’ and ‘tied’. An independent financial adviser (IFA) researches the entire market to give advice and get the best deal for their client. A ‘tied’ financial adviser is employed by a specific bank or building society, and will advise on the products and services offered by their own company.

On this Higher Apprenticeship, you’ll learn to advise on mortgages, long-term care insurance or other financial matters like pensions and savings depending on the pathway chosen. You’ll be meeting clients, staying up-to-date with financial markets, negotiating prices with providers of financial products and putting together financial plans based on your client discussions.

People work hard for their money, and deciding what to do with it can be daunting – so you’ll need a trustworthy manner and the ability to explain complex matters in simple terms. A good head for figures does help, but being a people person is more important. Financial advisers often work in business environments – a professional manner and a smart appearance are crucial.

Apprenticeship & Advanced Apprenticeship PayrollIt’s up to the payroll team to make sure that everyone in the company gets the right amount of money, at the right time. If anything goes wrong then payroll staff are the first people the employees will call. An employee’s pay is incredibly important to them, and you’ll be expected to answer queries and solve problems in an efficient, friendly and discreet manner – remember, you’ll have access to a lot of very sensitive financial

records and other confidential information. It’s not an easy job: payroll clerks are responsible for figuring out how much employees should get paid by adding up all their overtime, deducting enough to cover tax and national insurance payments, and taking into account things like holiday, sick pay and expenses. Most payroll departments are lively, office-based teams. Organisational skills are important, and while having a good grasp of numbers will help you a great deal, a methodical and attention to detail will get you even further.

On the Advanced Apprenticeship you will build on what has been learned at level 2, introducing more complex payroll tasks, including year end procedures. You will also train more in developing effective payroll management skills.

On the Apprenticeship you will take the payroll qualifications which relate to the core skills needed to work effectively in payroll. Topics covered include calculating gross and net pay and how to maintain accurate employee records.

Introduction to AutomotiveApprenticeships in the Motor Vehicle industry account for a large part of the country’s Engineering & Manufacturing base - with more than 32 million vehicles on the UK’s roads, we need plenty of motor vehicle technicians to keep them roadworthy. We have an impressive and specialist Automotive training suite at our SkillCentre in Trafford Park as well as arrangements in place with many colleges to support your training at locations that may be more accessible to you across Greater Manchester.

Whether you want to start on a full time course, or learn your trade and achieve your qualifications whilst earning a wage, we have a programme to suit you. All our programmes offer practical knowledge as well as learning about the technical Automotive elements of your chosen area of training. While you are deciding on what career you want to pursue with your Apprenticeship we advise that you also read the Engineering and Construction Mechanical sections of this prospectus to be sure you apply for the right option.

Foundation SkillsAutomotive Apprenticeships can be demanding and some routes will require GCSE grades for entry. If you are not ready to go straight into an Apprenticeship we also offer a General Introduction to Motor Vehicle through our Foundation Learning programme – we have very good progression rates from this programme onto Apprenticeships, but please note that this route is only available to 16-18 year olds.

ApprenticeshipsLight Vehicle Mechanics are highly skilled and adaptable professionals that work with a mix of cars and vans. They are able to put their knowledge and experience to use to fix and maintain customer vehicles. Whether it’s preventative maintenance (servicing), or fault diagnostic and repair, one thing is certain…no two days or jobs will ever be the same! This includes working with an array of tools and diagnostic equipment in order to maintain and replace parts to keep the vehicles on the road.

Heavy Vehicle Mechanics have the added challenge of working on trucks and buses. They carry out maintenance to service schedules, repair or replace complex parts to keep the vehicles mobile. This is a highly skilled role with the challenges of meeting tight deadlines, as the vehicles are often commercial which means time is money! Service Schedules for heavy vehicles and buses are more frequent and vigorous than that for cars, which means you’ll never be far from the next big repair. In addition, tooling and diagnostics equipment needs to be cutting edge to keep up with the technologies on new models.

Vehicle Body Repairers, Refinishers and MET are all involved in the aftermath of an accident, or during vehicle refurbishments. They are responsible for returning the vehicles to their former glory prior to any collisions. Success in the industry would require a clear attention to detail and the ability to meet tight repair deadlines. Body repairers use specialist equipment which includes Jigs, Welders and Paint Guns.

Vehicle Body Cladding and Structures Operatives are involved in repairing commercial vehicles after an accident, and are heavily involved in commercial vehicle refurbishment and body building. Specialist vehicle manufacturers can take a standard transit van and convert it into a multi seated minibus to meet a one off specification that is set by their customers. Large commercial fleet operators often commission companies that specialise in body building to build a fleet of vehicles based on their company’s needs to fulfil a contract.

Vehicle Parts Operatives perform an important function in any dealership or large workshop. They deal with internal (workshop) and external (other businesses/general public) customers and as such have to work well as part of a team. They would be required to keep records of stock held and to order in parts to supply to the body shop and service functions. A successful Parts Operative would have a good knowledge of IT, be good with people, have a flair for commercial sales and enjoy the challenge of negotiating prices to buy in parts and to make a profit on those they sell.

Advanced ApprenticeshipsWhile continuing to develop the skills & knowledge you started on your Apprenticeship - servicing cars, carrying out repair and parts replacement work, refinishing and painting bodywork, or diagnosing and rectifying faults etc - on the Advanced Apprenticeship, you will hone your skills to deal with more complex problems and learn how to identify more difficult faults and how to repair them using sophisticated diagnostic equipment.

Business & AdministrationOne of the great things about business and administration is that you can work almost anywhere. Administration roles are an excellent starting point to move into management once you have more experience. With the extended range of Advanced Apprenticeships that we deliver this is a great starting point for career progression within a range of sectors.

Administrators handle the day-to-day tasks in an office and make sure things run smoothly. 97% of employers say that effective administration is essential to their business. As an Apprentice, your exact duties will depend on your employer. It’s likely that you’ll be working with a team or member of staff. You may be typing up board meeting documents, putting financial information together in spreadsheets, sending the daily post, or faxing and photocopying documents. This sort of work requires a strong sense of responsibility, accuracy and attention to detail.

As an Advanced Apprentice you will build on the knowledge and skills developed at Level 2 and will take on more responsibilities in your role with an emphasis on supervisory tasks. It’s a great starting point for many and varied careers because of the disciplines it covers and the many transferrable skills that you will develop, there is an opportunity to start focussing your career path at the Advanced Apprenticeship level by choosing to specialise in a particular occupational area of Administration. This year we will be offering a new Advanced Apprenticeship in Health Sector Administration.

Contact CentresContact Centres – sometimes known as ‘call centres’ - provide a way for people to get in touch with businesses and organisations. The Contact Centres industry is one of the fastest growing in the UK, with job opportunities in most urban areas. Contact Centre Apprentices could work for a number of businesses across a range of sectors - no matter where they end up, they’ll learn all about their employer’s services and products so they can assist customers as helpfully as possible.

On this Apprenticeship you could be working in areas like sales, information retrieval, or account management. No matter where you end up, the same sets of skills will apply: you’ll work the phones and computer systems; listen and communicate; solve problems; and work with a team in a fast-paced environment. Employees of Contact Centres have to be helpful, friendly, and well informed. Because they spend most of their time making and/or answering calls they must have an excellent phone manner (and it helps if they enjoy talking to people, too).

Customer Service Learn the skills to provide excellent customer service! These can be applied to hundreds of job roles across many different sectors, from retail to government and telecommunications to Financial Services. Completing a Customer Service Apprenticeship is a great way of providing evidence of skills that will serve you well in virtually any industry – so it’s a very good way to move forward, even if you’re still undecided about your future career. As an Apprentice, you’ll probably work at the front end of an employer’s business activities and regularly assist customers. Duties will vary between sectors, but in most cases you’ll be making sure that customers are dealt with in a positive, reliable and pleasant way - whether that’s by offering advice, answering questions or handling complaints. To properly assist customers, you’ll need clear and up-to-date knowledge of your organisation’s products and services. You’ll also need to be able to communicate well.

Sales & TelesalesThe Sales & Telesales workforce is one of the largest professional groups in the UK today, employing around 7% of the UK workforce, or just over two million people.

As an Apprentice in this profession you will learn the skills needed by sales professionals, including strategic account management, commercial/business awareness and business development skills, as well as the soft skills of time management, IT and communication, including negotiating and influencing skills. Learning and developing these skills within the profession can lead to a long and rewarding career with good future prospects.

As an Apprentice you might be working in job roles such as trainee sales advisors, sales consultants or sales executives. When you progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship you might well work in job roles such as team leader, supervisor or customer relationship manager.

IT UserToday most business environments require employees to use IT applications. IT user is not necessarily a job title but a skill that most employers would like their employees to have. Therefore an ITQ Apprentice could work in a variety of roles including office support administrator, marketing administrator, HR administrator, secretary, project support officer etc.

IT Professional Apprenticeship - Networking & InstallationAs an Apprentice on this programme you are likely to be working in an IT technical support role, installing and troubleshooting desktop PCs or as a network planner, designing and planning the installation of IT networks. The Apprenticeship providers the opportunity to undertake a number of Microsoft vendor units.

ConstructionCraft

Page 31: Intermediate Apprenticeships Prospectus

IntroductionConstruction is a multi-billion pound industry that deals with developing and building anything from a housing estate to a bridge. Few industries are as wide-ranging, or offer so many different career pathways. The Construction Craft trades offer Apprentices lots of occupations to choose from – if you’re the type who enjoys physical work, you could help lay the foundations of a ten-storey building; build scaffolding around a famous landmark due for restoration; plaster the interior of an office building; or maintain heavy plant.

With a Construction Apprenticeship, you could be working on various sites in your region and beyond – there are also plenty of opportunities to work abroad, as many of the largest construction companies operate around the world. No matter where you start your career, if you have the determination and work hard, there’ll be plenty of chances to move up the career ladder.

An Apprenticeship requires dedication and hard work so you should be certain you are committed to pursuing a career within this industry. Our Apprenticeships combine the best of accredited practical training delivered at our state-of-the-art SkillCentre. Diplomas/technical certificates for many of the Craft trades can be undertaken at our SkillCentre prior to starting an Apprenticeship with an employer - if you choose this option then our sector specialists work with employers while you are training to secure you a job - whilst this is not guaranteed we have excellent placement rates.

About your training

BricklayingA bricklayer works outside all year round in inclement weathers, working on private and commercial properties. Building new properties and also working on old properties. Laying bricks and blocks, forming window and door openings in walls, building walls around Timber Framed and Steel structures. Building inspection chambers, laying drainage pipes, mixingcement. Working on your own or as part of a team, you will need to be able to read drawings and measure accurately.

Carpentry & Joinery (Wood Occupations)Site Carpenters prepare, fix and erect many timber components that go into the construction of a building. This can include installation of timber stairs, construction of floors, walls, roofs and expertly crafted windows and doors. They also add the finishing touches such as fixing skirting board and architrave.

Joiners use specialised hand and power tools and work with a variety of different types of wood, plastic and other materials.

Bench Joiners make doors, windows, door and window frames, staircases and specialised tailor-made furniture. They work predominantly inside and are usually based in a workshop environment, occasionally going out on site to measure, fix and install manufactured timber components.

Shop Fitting Bench Joiners make the shop fronts and interior fittings, whilst the site shop fitter installs and fixes them on site. Both are highly skilled people who, with great care, transform empty premises into fashionable shops, cafes and bars. Working to designers’ plans and instructions they use many different types of material and techniques to achieve the desired effect.

Wood Machinists work inside, producing all the timber components ready for assembly by bench joiners/fitters for the installation by site carpenter or shop fitters. This includes floorboards, cladding, window sections, skirting board and architrave etc. setting up, maintaining and safely operating the machines. Wood machinists carry out quite complex measurements.

Fitted Interiors On a Fitted Interiors Apprenticeship you will learn how to install fitted furniture in bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchens, how to assemble wall and floor units and install and connect the water supply plumbing. This Apprenticeship combines a number of skills and is an option for those also considering wood occupations and this is one of the most popular trades that we offer a block training programme for at the SkillCentre.

Maintenance OperationsInvolved with the repair and maintenance of a wide range of properties, be it with a property developer, estate agency, housing association or a building company specialising in this field. The role will involve general refurbishment and repair, for example modernising kitchens, bathrooms, doors and windows.

Painting and Decorating This Apprenticeship is not just involved in hanging wallpaper! As a Painter & Decorator you can play an important role in the paining and finishing of structural steel and concrete work used in bridges, factories, industrial and commercial buildings. You must also be able to apply a number of specialist painting and other finishing techniques to provide ornamental effects commonly found in stately homes, town halls and top hotels.

About your training

PlasteringPlasterers work on both new build and existing domestic and commercial properties. The work includes dry lining, floating and skimming walls and ceilings, applying renders to external walls and possibly some decorative work such as ceiling roses and cornices. You will learn a range of plastering skills while on your Apprenticeship which could cover: Rendering - sand and cement plastering applied to external walls either to protect the building from penetrative damp or for cosmetic purposes. Floating and skimming usually done on plasterboard, artex or old and damaged plaster to give a smooth finish; Dry Lining - putting up walls or partitions, which are normally mounted to timber or metal studs and the joints will need to be taped and filled prior to decorating. Rendering is the main area of plastering that we cover at the SkillCentre but developments are underway to expand the workshops to accommodate more Dry Lining.

Plant Maintenance A Plant Maintenance Apprentice is an essential member of the construction team, ensuring that all the heavy-duty machinery used in the building process is running properly and is reliable. Breakdowns of large cranes, excavators, graders and trucks can result in very costly delays to the contractor. A plant mechanic therefore must be on call and able to quickly repair equipment on site or in a workshop.

ScaffoldingAs a Scaffolding Apprentice you will learn how to erect and dismantle temporary structures and platforms consisting of metal tubes and fittings that enable building operatives to work at height. The scaffolding must guarantee the safety of not only the operatives but also the general public who are passing underneath. Therefore safety and teamwork are everything in this profession.

As well as covering all the appropriate Health & Safety aspects of working in the scaffolding trade you will also be trained in how to erect and dismantle temporary structures and platforms including: Independent and Birdcage Scaffold; Tower Scaffolds; Cantilevered Scaffolds; Pavement and Roof Scaffolds. You will also be trained in the use of harnesses.

Wall and Floor Tiling As a tiling Apprentice you will learn how to position and finish wall and floor tiles to surfaces, repair and maintain wall and floor tilling. During your training you will learn how to conform to general workplace safety & efficient work practices; moving and handling resources; preparing backgrounds for tiling. You will then move on to tiling Wall and Floor Surfaces where you will learn about materials, components and fixings; tools & equipment; laying tiles to vertical, horizontal and inclined surfaces; reveals, cills and soffits (door and/or windows); floor channels and outlets.

Introduction to Engineering & ManufacturingFrom the moment you wake to the time you go to bed you will constantly come into contact with the world of Engineering & Manufacturing. Making things (manufacturing) and making things work (engineering) – that’s what Apprenticeships in this sector are all about. The toast or breakfast cereal you eat has been produced, packaged and despatched by machinery which has been designed, built, installed and maintained by Engineers. So too has your toothbrush and toothpaste, your shoes and clothes, your computer and mobile phone. Whichever way you travel, by bus, the car, the tram, the train or your bike - all required engineers to design, build and maintain both the finished product and the machinery needed to produce it.

If you fly away for holidays, the aeroplane and all the support equipment you see in the airport has been designed and built by Engineers. Every time you turn a key or flick a switch you bring to life another piece of the world of engineering. Engineering is all around us and the developments in technology mean that we will always need young engineers with new ideas to secure our future. Manufacturing covers a wide range of industries too from food to pharmaceuticals, circuit boards for the electronics and telecoms industry, to furniture manufacturing, chemical processing and heavy goods vehicle trailer building, to name just a few.

What areas of Engineering can I train in?Engineering is a varied industry and an ideal career choice for young people who are inquisitive and like to build things or find out how things work. There are a number of areas that

you can specialise in when you have mastered the basics including: Design, Production, Maintenance and Fabrication.

Design Engineers use their drawing and computer skills to bring their ideas to life. All engineering projects start with someone who can transfer ideas of their own and other people into sketches and drawings which can be made into real components and working models.

Production Engineers use hand skills and machine tools to convert the ideas of the designer into real components and working machinery. Some production machines are computer controlled and operate at very high speeds. The components can be used to build such things as aeroplanes, cars, elevators and packaging machines.

About your training

Maintenance Engineers install the machinery on site and use problem solving and technical skills to quickly identify and repair faulty or worn out equipment such as pumps, valves, electric motors, chains and gears. Maintenance Engineers can specialise as mechanical or electrical technicians, although there are great opportunities in modern industry for people who have experience of both.

Fabrication Engineers use forming and welding skills to build metal structures for many uses. They can build things such as air conditioning and ventilation systems, transport containers, bridges and walkways, earth moving vehicles, ships and trains.

See also our information on Construction Mechanical and Automotive Apprenticeships in this prospectus to be sure you apply for the right option.

What could my Apprenticeship lead to? The Engineering and Manufacturing Industry has many areas such as aerospace, automotive, marine, mechanical and electrical engineering. Your Apprenticeship is an ideal step into any of these industries and opportunities exist to take you as far as your ambitions demand.

You could be an engineering craftsperson or technician who builds, installs and maintains engineering equipment and machinery, but with more experience and higher level qualifications, you could become a chartered engineer and hold a senior position such as Project Manager, Chief Engineer or Director of Engineering. You could even set up your own Engineering company.

Engineering ApprenticeshipEmployer Vacancy - Some Apprenticeships will start directly with the employer and you will go through day release for the technical underpinning knowledge part of your training. While most employers in Engineering will prefer you to have had some training and underpinning knowledge before you join them, some will provide this within their own training provision. Apprenticeships that start straight with the employer will be advertised through the National Apprenticeship Service website and you will be expected to progress onto an Advanced Apprenticeship – keep an eye on www.apprenticeships.org.uk for opportunities.

Block Training - You will be employed by the North West Apprenticeship Company and will be paid £2.50 per hour whilst you undertake a block of training at our SkillCentre in Trafford Park, Manchester, or with our partners at Tameside College, Ashton under Lyne. You will need to be in full time employment in order to progress onto the level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. During your initial training course we will monitor your progress and work with employers to find suitable job opportunities for you. At the end of your block training course you will have completed the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations and the Improving Operational Performance Intermediate Apprenticeship.

Some of the employers we work with…Aim Engineering, ANSA Elevators, Assembly Contracts Ltd, Brookhouse Aerospace, Detail Design Ltd, Hyde Aero Products, Thomas Storey Fabrications, Kingsland Wines & Spirits, University of Liverpool, Dowding and Mills, Rycroft Food, Mine Radio Systems, Crest Engineering and Philmar Fabrications.

Get in, and get on with your career in

Health, Social Care,Early Years,Schools

Page 56: Intermediate Apprenticeships Prospectus

IntroductionWorking in health, social care, childcare, and teaching andlearning support roles can be very rewarding - but equally demanding work! If this is the career path for you then thereare lots of different directions you could take - below are a few of the ranges of Apprenticeships we support in this sector.

Children and Young People’s WorkforceThis Apprenticeship is for people who work with children and young people from birth to 19 year-olds (and their families or carers) in settings or services whose main purpose is children’s care, learning and/or development. Workers in this area make sure children are supported, looked after, kept active, happy and nourished. They also help children develop social and practical skills. This Apprenticeship gives people a fulfilling opportunity to work with children and young people while they put their childcare theory into practice.

As an Apprentice the exact nature of your job role will depend on your employer. The Apprenticeship is for those working under supervision such as people who are new to the Sector, a nursery assistant or playgroup assistant working with children under five or an assistant playworker in an out of school setting.

Within the Advanced Apprenticeship you may take different pathways such as Early Years or Social Care.

The Advanced Apprenticeship is for those who work on their own initiative, planning and organising their own work and/or supervising others, for example, a residential support worker, nursery nurse, playgroup leader or a child minder working in their own home. After successful completion of this

Apprenticeship there’s good scope for progression. You may move up through levels of work, for example, from nursery or house assistant to nursery or house manager. There are also opportunities to undertake further training or assessment.

Teaching and Learning SupportThis Apprenticeship is about providing support in the classroom. Learning support staff, such as teaching assistants or cover supervisors, play a vital role in today’s classrooms by making sure students get the most out of their lessons. They work with teachers, carry out duties like lesson preparation and work with small groups or individuals, allowing the teacher to concentrate on teaching the class. Some learning support staff could specialise in areas like music or special needs.

As an Apprentice, you will work under the close supervision of a class teacher. Your duties will vary depending on how the teachers you work with plan their lessons and day-to-day classroom activities – however, you could find yourself supervising arts and crafts activities, helping with outings or reading to the class.

The Advanced Apprenticeship will add more responsibility to the role. You could help plan, carry out and evaluate a wide range of learning activities. You will work both alongside the teacher to support classroom activities and alone with individuals or groups of students. It is a good stepping-stone to a Foundation Degree or Higher Level Teaching Assistant training.

Health and Social CareSocial care is about supporting or helping people with a particular need, such as an older person or a person who has a physical or learning disability. This type of care may take place in the person’s home or in a care home and can include anything from helping people get dressed to preparing and providing food and drinks to escorting them to and from an appointment or residential home.

Health care is about supporting individuals who have more complex care needs and may again take place in the person’s home, the hospital or clinic or in a nursing home.

This Apprenticeship covers a wide range of job roles in the health care and social care fields including the NHS, independent sector and local authorities care agencies. The type of job role you are in will determine which Apprenticeship you will undertake. This could be Health or Social Care.

You could also be supporting doctors or nurses in clinical roles or helping patients in hospital wards or their homes – serving food, making and changing beds and so on. There are many separate qualifications available within the health care Apprenticeship ranging from maternity to radiotherapy support.

Opportunities for progression and development are excellent and completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship will stand you in good stead for progression in your work role or onto further training or higher education in subjects like social work, nursing or midwifery assistant practitioner or management roles.

Recruitment and SelectionApprentices for our programmes are not selected simply based on academic achievement. Motivation, commitment and application to your work can be just as important and for some trade areas even more so. If GCSE grades are required for any trades or levels of programmes these will be stated in the Apprenticeship listings.

Alongside the programme details listed in this prospectus are some pointers on entry criteria and an overview of the selection methods we use. Stages of recruitment will generally involve Application Form, Interview and, for Construction/Engineering trades only, an assessment too.

When you reach the interview stage you will meet a representative from the sector you have applied to who will be able to explain the details of the Apprenticeships you are interested in and assess your suitability. You can contact the Recruitment Team at anytime during your apprenticeship application, the team will be pleased to provide you with more information and advice about the interview and selection process. We are aware that for some of you this may be your first experience of interviews and we understand they can be a scary prospect - but we want you to do well. Good luck!
