2014 Student Intern of the Year Award Nomination This nomination is to be completed by the student’s internship supervisor. Your Name: Kathy Doherty Your Organization’s Name: Global Business Management Services Your Student Intern’s Name: Michael Botyarov Semester of Internship: Summer, 2014 Briefly describe what your student intern did during their internship: Michael began his internship by working with Jeppesen business cases in order to learn more about our solutions and how we take them to market. He improved the PowerPoint capture of business case information, worked together with the owners and sponsors, and eventually compiled 16 for customer solutions, 8 for the EOS program, and 14 for GNS and GNST. Michael also challenged the existing process and implemented new ideas to better align the business cases with the Solution Lifecycle Management (SLiM) process. This aided Michael in the next part of his internship, improving the quality of data in the SLiM database “SLiMForce.” He worked with another intern to interview all product managers to collect requirements for a SLiM-focused Jeppesen solution roadmap. These requirements have now been submitted for development as of October and we plan to complete this effort by the end of Q4. He also undertook a major data cleanup effort in our SLiM database, running reports and coordinating with managers to ensure solutions, releases, and gates were filled out in order to partner better with our sales team. With regard to our Technical Development team, Michael collected statistics and updated weekly reports used to show how we are executing on our roadmaps. Lastly, Michael verified all of our client management training documentation and clarified any gaps that appeared. Some of his business case work is depicted below:

Briefly describe what your student intern did during their internship:

Michael began his internship by working with Jeppesen business cases in order to learn more about our solutions and how we take them to market. What impact did the student have on your organization?Michael enabled the current SLiM implementation to a much higher level throughout the Flight Operations organization, which ties to 3 critical imperatives within Global Business Management Services (GBMS) as shown in the next question. In order for Jeppesen to continue to gain market share it is critical for us to have up to date data and an immediate view into product status. Michael was instrumental in closing the gap that existed on this. Below are the four GBMS imperatives that Michael’s work has significantly impacted:

Please document a specific accomplishment of your intern:

One of Michael’s key accomplishments was doing roadmap research and incorporating the results of this research into a recommendation for automation within our road-mapping ‘SLiMForce’ database. Tied very closely with this effort was Michael’s capture and maintenance of up-to-date information and status on all Flight Operations Solutions, Releases, and Gates from the ‘SLiMForce’ database in a spreadsheet. Michael hyperlinked business case and gate review artifacts to the spreadsheet, connecting what he had done early on in his internship with what has been requested in recent months. Due to Boeing security concerns, the SLiMForce roadmap had to be removed from the database. Hence, we have had to rely on this spreadsheet since late summer. Without this capture, we would not have had nearly the quality of data and accuracy needed to help with SLiM adoption and hold individuals accountable for their roadmap deliverables. Below is an illustration of this spreadsheet, a derivative of which we will now be automating within SLiMForce since the requirements have been submitted:

What has this intern done that other interns with your organization have not done?

Michael took a leadership role and assisted us with onboarding, training, and providing leadership for another intern who started the summer program later. This was helpful since we had little time to repeat the orientation process and because Michael has natural leadership ability. He also sat down and interviewed 15-20 stakeholders (mostly product managers) to understand their pain points and identify how and where he could best address them. He listened, documented, and then incorporated many ‘voice of the customer’ comments into his daily work within a very short period of time.

Why does this student deserve to be Intern of the Year?

No matter what spur of the moment assignment we had, Michael not only was willing to take it on but showed an amazing grasp of what we needed and how he could deliver. He has a quick intelligence that can assess, determine possible outcomes and execute efficiently. In our fast paced industry where change is sometimes by the minute but heavily regulated this is a skill that few possess.
