professionals involved in its construction (ISG, Turner & Townsend, SKM, and Capital Symonds) together with the University of Sheffield received the

RICS Pro Yorkshire Award for Design and Innovation in the Region.

A major opportunity now exists to expand the vital research activity into

Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, and SMA

(the childhood variety of MND) by increasing the number of international scientists

devoting themselves to this research, and this Gala Concert and Dinner aims to provide an

important boost to the funds required.

Performing Artists

Lisa Milne MBE, soprano is a Scottish Soprano who studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

She has appeared in leading roles at the Metropolitan Opera and at Glyndebourne, with Scottish Opera, and with Welsh National Opera; further afield, with the Dallas

Opera, Stuttgart Opera and Royal Danish Opera. Concert appearances have included performances with the Boston Symphony under Levine; the Berlin Philharmonic under Rattle; the Rotterdam Philharmonic under Gergiev; the Budapest Philharmonic under

Fischer, and with the New York and Vienna Philharmonics under Harding. Lisa Milne is a regular recitalist at Wigmore Hall.

Ailish Tynan, sopranowas born in Ireland and trained there before coming to the Guildhall School of Music

and Drama; in 2003 she received the Rosenblatt Recital Prize in the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World whilst a Royal Opera Young Artist. In opera she has recently

performed Hero in Beatrice and Benedict for Houston Grand Opera, Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Tigrane in Radamisto for ENO, and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte at La

Scala. This season she has sung Gretel with Scottish Opera and will sing Mme Cortese in Il Viaggio a Reims at Covent Garden. She has appeared regularly on the concert

platform and at Wigmore Hall.

Ian Bostridge CBE, tenor had a distinguished early academic career – Queen’s Scholar at Westminster School, and St John’s and Corpus Christi Colleges, Oxford (of both of which he is an Honorary Fellow), and St John’s College, Cambridge. At Corpus Christi he was a Post-doctoral Fellow before turning to a professional career as a singer in 1993. He has performed

in most of the leading concert and recital halls, and opera houses of the world to enormous critical acclaim, whether as the Evangelist in Bach’s St John’s Passion at Carnegie Hall or in Thomas Adès’s The Tempest at Covent Garden; he returns often to Wigmore Hall where he has been a much-loved performer for two decades. Ian

Bostridge has recorded extensively, including Britten, and Die schöne Müllerin (with Johnson and with Uchida) and recently he published some of his insightful writings in

A Singer’s Notebook, just reprinted.

James Baillieu, pianowon the 2009 Pianist’s Prize in the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition and

was described as “that magician of the keyboard”. The Daily Telegraph commented that he “is surely the leader of the new generation of accompanists – in a class of his own;

a remarkable pianist.” James Baillieu was born in South Africa and graduated from the University of Cape Town in 2004. He won a full scholarship to the Royal Academy

of Music and so impressed that in 2011 he was appointed a Professor of Piano Accompaniment at the Academy. He has won many major prizes including the Rosario

Marciano Prize in Vienna. He follows in a great line of accompanists from Moore to Parsons and to Johnson and Drake.

Lorenzo Gatto, violin shot to fame when he won the Judges’ First Prize and the Audience’s Prize in the

Final of the First Manchester International Violin Competition in 2005. In 2010 he was the runner-up in the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. He started

studying violin at five and from 12 he has been playing in concert halls throughout Europe. He has made two important recordings - an Enescu-Martinu recording for the Fuga Libera label, and Vieuxtemps’ Concerto No 4 with the Liège Philharmonic Orchestra. Lorenzo Gatto makes his USA debut in September, playing Beethoven’s

Violin Concerto with the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra and will have his solo debut at Wigmore Hall next year.

Joris van den Berg, ‘cellowas born into a musical family in the Netherlands in 2006 and after studying, at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, he went to the RNCM in Manchester where he studied with Ralph Kirshbaum, graduating with distinction and receiving the College’s Gold

Medal. Since September 2011 he has been on the International Artists Diploma Course at the RNCM where he is supported by the 2011/12 Dorothy Stone

Scholarship. He has already made his debuts in both the recital and the main halls of the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, and at Wigmore Hall.

‘2CELLOS’ Luka Šulic & Stjepan Hausershot to world-wide fame after recording on YouTube their “cross-over” ‘cello version of Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal which had 3.5 million “hits” in three weeks. Both

Luka and Stjepan are from Croatia and had been studying classical ‘cello, respectively at the Royal Academy of Music (Luka) and at Trinity College of Music (Stjepan) (where

he was supported by the Stone-Mallabar Charitable Foundation) the Royal Northern College of Music (where he was the 2009/10 Dorothy Stone Scholar). They were

signed by SONY and their first CD which was released in August 2011 has already sold c.200,000 copies; another CD is presently being recorded.

2 Cellos are managed by Rocket Music (Sir Elton John’s management company) and they have been touring and playing worldwide with Sir Elton for nine months.
