participation of 76 motoring journalists from 35 countries. UKIP Media & Events Ltd receives no advertising or financial support from any car manufacturer or distributor.
Welcome to the 14th International Engine of the Year Awards. This year’s awards are the biggest yet, with the jury panel featuring 76 of the world’s most respected motoring journalists from 35 countries, bringing with them a wealth of experience and knowledge of today’s advanced passenger car, SUV and MPV engines.
New members on this year’s jury include Renuka Kirpalani, a much-respected journalist in India who features on the Autocar Show on Bloomberg TV; Tarcisio Dias de Araújo, who runs the very popular Mecânica Online website in Brazil; and Nicol Louw, the new technical editor of Car (South Africa).
The winning engines for 2012 boasted not only high-end performance, but also cutting-edge powertrain subsystems that reduce emissions and substantially improve fuel economy. Judges from around the globe particularly favoured supercharging and turbocharging technologies along with direct injection, although there were notable naturally aspirated winners as well. As with previous years, engines with small displacements proved to be
popular, highlighting the need for car makers to embrace downsizing.
At the other end of the engine size spectrum, one of the highlights this year came in the Performance Engine category, where new developments from BMW M, McLaren and Porsche went head-to-head with last year’s winner, the stunning 4.5-litre V8 in the Ferrari 458.
Equally intriguing was the race to secure both the Green Engine and the New Engine accolades, with the next generation of IC engines battling against some exciting new electric designs, such as the range-extender setup from General Motors in the Chevrolet Volt and Opel/Vauxhall Ampera, and the Hybrid4 diesel hybrid innovation from PSA Peugeot Citroën.
The race to be crowned the overall International Engine of the Year Award was also fiercely contested. In the end, it came down two diminutive engines – but did this include last year’s all-conquering winner, the Fiat TwinAir two-cylinder? Green Engine of the Year: To qualify for inclusion in this category, an engine must have been housed in a passenger car that was on sale in more than one country as of June 2012, have been designed with fuel economy as a priority, and employ intelligent technologies and engine subsystems to reduce all types of emissions, including particulate matter and NOx.
Best Performance Engine: To qualify for inclusion in this category, an engine must have been housed in a passenger car that was on sale in more than one country as of June 2012, and have been designed specifically for a performance-orientated car, or be installed in a vehicle created for sporting fun.
Best New Engine: To qualify for inclusion in this category, an engine must have been launched after May 2011 and be housed in a passenger car that was on sale in more than one country as of June 2012.
International Engine of the Year 2012: The winners of the eight capacity classes and the Green Engine of the Year are shortlisted for the overall International Engine of the Year Award.
ScoringIn every category, the panelists judged each shortlisted engine using their subjective driving impressions and technical knowledge, taking into account characteristics such as fuel economy, smoothness, performance, noise and
driveability. The jurors each had 25 points to award to their five favourite engines in each category. A maximum of 15 points could be allocated to an engine, and the minimum was 1 point. An engine could not be tied for the top spot.

Ford has finally ended its 14-year wait to collect an International Engine of the Year Award after the company’s first ever three-cylinder design easily took first place in the New Engine category.
Judges from around the world have been quick to praise the 1-litre EcoBoost unit, which combines turbocharging, direct injection and twin variable cam timing to deliver high levels of performance and refinement with the fuel economy advantages of downsizing. Georg Kacher, an international freelance journalist based in Germany, was one of many jurors to fall for the new Ford engine: “At last, a three-cylinder that works. It’s frugal, surprisingly refined, and a lot of fun.”
On the road, the three-cylinder, which first finds a home in the Ford Focus, generates 123bhp and 170Nm peak torque (200Nm with overboost), and that, along with a combined fuel economy figure of 56.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 114g/km, ensured a Blue Oval victory, beating the likes of BMW
with its 3-litre twin-power turbo diesel six-cylinder, Mazda’s 2.2-litre Skyactiv diesel, the GM range extender setup in the Volt/Ampera, and the McLaren 3.8-litre V8 heart.
One of the central engineering aspects of the 1-litre EcoBoost, which was developed at Ford’s Dunton technical centre in the UK, is a new compact, high-performance turbocharger from Continental. Such is its innovative design, the turbo offers an extremely fast response and its ability to reach nearly 250,000rpm results in virtually no turbo lag and peak torque from 1,300 to 4,500rpm.
Being able to generate high torque levels further supports an eco-friendly driving style and this is combined with good performance and a diesel-like torque experience, all of which was not missed by Christophe Congrega of L’Automobile Magazine in France: “With good torque at the very low end, this high-tech three-cylinder turbo gives the driving performance of a small turbo diesel, but without the noise and vibrations.”

The Green Engine Award has traditionally been a stronghold for hybrids and specifically Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive innovation, which has won this accolade six times since 2004. But this year, an all-new type of powertrain design has come to the fore to collect the prestigious Green Engine gong: the range-extender from General Motors.
And unlike the latest breed of all-electric vehicles that drive for a maximum of 125 miles before needing to recharge, the range extender in the Chevrolet Volt and Opel/Vauxhall Ampera appealed to judges with its 380-mile range. For the first 35 miles of the journey, the Volt/Ampera can drive fuel-free (and therefore no tailpipe emissions) using a full charge of electricity stored in its 16kWh lithium-ion battery. Then, when the vehicle’s battery runs low, a 1.4-litre petrol engine/generator engages to extend the overall driving range by another 345 miles on a full charge, meaning that the GM product can truly claim to be a family car.
“The 1.4-litre range extender in the Volt/Ampera remains one of the most intelligent and innovative green car solutions out there,” enthused Peter Nunn, a freelance journalist with global outlets, who gave the powertrain top marks. He added, “The technology is seamless, efficient, and with no range anxiety issues to worry about as with a conventional electric car. On top of all that, it’s far more interesting than a diesel.”
The lithium-ion battery in the Volt/Ampera weighs just over 198kg and comes in a 1.6m-long T-shaped construction that features a glass-filled polyester structural composite with aluminium thermal radiation shield and steel. It boasts 288 prismatic cells and a liquid active thermal control system. The 1.4-litre engine, on the other hand, features overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, continuously variable intake and exhaust cam phaser. The IC unit provides 84bhp at 4,800rpm, and the two electric drive motors offer a further 149bhp and 273Nm of torque.

Only two other car makers in the history of the awards have successfully defended their Performance Engine Award for two consecutive years: Mercedes-AMG and BMW M. Last year’s winner – Ferrari, with the 458 V8 – had it all to do this year if it was to join the back-to-back winners club, with stiff competition coming in the form of the stunning McLaren 3.8-litre V8, the powerful 4.4-litre twin turbo from BMW M, and Porsche’s acclaimed 3.8-litre Boxer in the new 911.
In what was one of the closest categories contested at this year’s awards, all four of the above engines were, at one stage of the vote-counting process, leading the way in securing the coveted Performance Engine gong, but in the end the 458 heart held its nerve to snatch top spot by a mere 24 points!
The result means that Ferrari now joins Mercedes-AMG and BMW M in successfully holding its Performance Engine title for two years in a row, meaning that the V8 firecracker
cements its place in the history books as a truly great sports car engine.

The 458 V8 oozes engineering greatness. It is the first Ferrari direct-injection engine to be mid-rear-mounted and it boasts a very low piston compression height that’s typical of a racing engine, and this contributes to it achieving a compression ratio of 12.5:1. Equipped with the traditional flat-plane crankshaft, the V8 delivers 562bhp at 9,000rpm and 540Nm of torque at 6,000rpm.
In the real world, such effortless power means that the 458 Italia can easily sprint to 62mph (100km/h) in under 3.4 seconds.

The Sub 1-litre category has fast become one of the toughest awards to win, as global car makers fast-track the development of downsized engines that generate fewer emissions and go further on less fuel.
Last year saw a historic victory for Fiat in this segment, with its two-cylinder design ending four years of dominance by Toyota. But this year, the competition was just too hot for the little Italian urban motor following the launch of two new three-cylinder powertrains: one from Volkswagen and the other from Ford. In the end, it was the latter that landed the knockout blow, meaning that TwinAir will not be able to defend its overall crown – only the third time such an occurrence has happened in the history of the Awards.
The 999cc turbocharged Ford engine took more than four years to develop and has been benchmarked against Toyota’s three-cylinder Aygo unit. Developed at Ford’s Dunton technical centre in the UK, the 1-litre EcoBoost engine features a new,
compact, high-performance turbocharger from Continental. The extremely fast response of the turbo, plus its ability to reach nearly 250,000rpm, results in virtually no turbo lag and peak torque of 170Nm.
Other technical highlights include an exhaust manifold cast into the cylinder head, which lowers the temperature of the exhaust gases and, in turn, enables the engine to run with the optimum fuel-to-air ratio across a wider rev band.
An advanced split cooling system reduces fuel consumption by warming the engine more quickly, and – unique to the 1-litre engine –cast iron has been selected for the block, reducing the amount of energy needed for warm-up by up to 50% of that required for an aluminium block.
Oozing innovation, the judges couldn’t help but praise Ford’s smallest engine to date. Freelance journalist John Simister said, “Tiny engine, big outputs, extraordinary claimed economy, some very neat design features. Sounds great, too.”

Volkswagen’s Twincharger has continued its amazing, trophy-laden run at the International Engine of the Year Awards. The 1.4-litre unit, which intelligently combines supercharging and turbocharging technologies in one powerful but frugal package, has won its category class since 2006. On top of that, it has also collected the Green Engine gong in 2009, and the overall International Engine of the Year Awards in both 2009 and 2010. Its victory this year in the 1-litre to 1.4-litre class means that it’s one of the most successful engines ever to be developed.
Such has been its continual impact that the judges can’t help but heap yet more praise on the motor. “The Twincharger simply combines the best of both worlds,” said Georg Kacher, a prominent freelancer based in Germany. Meanwhile, Carl Cunanan a motoring correspondent from the Philippines added, “The combining of the right technologies in this engine allows downsizing to continue to dominate the way the world sees and
ultimately buys the cars of today and tomorrow.”
As a measure of its relentless and ongoing success, TSI Twincharger secured first place in its category by 117 points last year; but for 2012, it rolled home 158 points clear of its smaller stablemate, the VW 1.2-litre TSI engine.
A frugal offering, TSI Twincharger can deliver up to 185bhp in certain applications due to the combination of petrol direct injection, a turbocharger and a supercharger. Low-end torque is ensured at low speeds by the mechanically driven supercharger. The turbo takes over at higher speeds once the intake air is pressurised, filling the ‘hole’ in the torque at low revs, and blessing the diminutive engine with the sort of power usually associated with a 2-litre naturally aspirated unit.
But power is only half the story here, as the TSI Twincharger offers impressive fuel economy. In the VW Golf, for example, it realises 45.5mpg on the combined cycle.

In an era where there’s less budget available for R&D, joint ventures among car makers are proving fruitful, and none more so than the tie-up between BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën.
The Franco-German collaboration has spawned an engine that just keeps coming up trumps, with the lively 1.6-litre turbo offering having won its category class for six years in a row.
New judge Alvaro Sauras from Spain’s Autofácil and Car&Tecno magazines, explains the motor’s ongoing appeal: “In most of the BMW/PSA models that use this engine, this powertrain is one of the best things about the car – and in some cases it is the best thing about the car. Simply put, a C4 Sedan is very much different to a C4 Sedan 1.6 THP model. Along with the performance, the fuel figures are great too, especially in the smaller and lighter models.”
The appeal of the BMW/PSA 1.6-litre turbo has been further enhanced with the adoption of fully variable valve
management. The throttle-free load control technology – based on the Valvetronic system used in other BMW engines and highly unusual in this compact segment – optimises the engine’s responses and, at the same time, makes for a significant reduction in fuel consumption and emissions.
Within fractions of a second, the valve management adjusts the stroke and opening period of the intake valves to the amount of output required, with the camshaft acting on the valves through an additional intermediate arm, and not directly through the cam follower. The pivot point of this additional intermediate arm is infinitely adjustable by an eccentric shaft controlled by an electric motor.
The result is a package that simply bats away new turbocharged and downsized competition from Mercedes-Benz, Ford and Alfa Romeo, as well as surpassing established rivals from Audi in the form of the 1.8-litre TFSI unit and Toyota’s current gasoline-hybrid setup.

Last year saw BMW’s 2-litre twin-turbo diesel unit take top honours in the 1.8-litre to 2-litre category, but this year it’s the car maker’s 2-litre twin-turbo petrol design that bags the award.
Judges applauded the engine’s downsizing technologies, with François Rabe of Wiel saying, “There is no doubt downsizing and adding turbo boost is the way of the future. BMW has done an exemplary job of pushing this technology to the mainstream.”
The 2-litre harnesses BMW’s boosting technology, which uses twin-scroll turbochargers and variable valve control to deliver a hearty punch of 350Nm of torque, in 328i spec, while returning fuel consumption levels of 44.1mpg on the combined cycle and a lowly CO2 emissions rating of just 149g/km.
The four-cylinder petrol fended off competition from the equally versatile four-cylinder TFSi unit from Audi, which is fitted to an even
broader spectrum of cars than the BMW victor. Other challengers successfully defeated included last year’s surprise winner, the BMW twin-turbo diesel, and former stablemates Mazda and Ford, which claimed fourth and fifth places respectively. Rounding out the top six was the innovative PSA diesel-hybrid unit as fitted to the Peugeot 3008, 508RHx and Citroën’s DS5.
The flexibility of the BMW petrol engine sees it deliver three power outputs, from 181bhp through to 241bhp, and it is fitted across the BMW range, from the 1 Series, through to the mid-spec 5 Series. And it’s not hard to see why this engine won, as Jason Cammisa, west coast editor at Automobile Magazine, explains: “This engine quietly and smoothly sets the world standard for fuel economy, engine response and NVH. Replacing one of the smoothest straight-sixes in the world is no small task, but this downsized turbo engine does it without offending anyone. It’s positively brilliant.”

This hotly contested award has been the most unpredictable of all the category classes over the years. Since the formation of the awards in 1999, the 2-litre to 2.5-litre segment has been won by no fewer than nine different car makers, but Audi’s hard-earned victory this year has meant that some consistency is finally being thrown into the mix, with the Ingolstadt OEM recording its third successive win with this motorsport-inspired, five-cylinder turbo design.
First launched in the TT RS and then the RS3, Audi’s five pot is one of the most characterful on the market, with a soundtrack reminiscent of the Quattro’s rally heyday in the 1980s. But there’s more to this sonorous motor than pure nostalgia. For a start it’s very flexible, with a flat torque curve delivering the 450Nm peak all the way from 1,600rpm to beyond 5,000rpm. The engine also features direct-injection to help the TT RS to deliver impressive economy levels, alongside its scintillating performance: 30.7mpg
on combined cycle from a car that will accelerate from standstill to 62mph (100km/h) in a mere 4.7 seconds and tops out at a governed 155mph (250km/h). The RS3 takes only one second longer to hit the 62mph mark, and fuel economy is bettered by only a whisker. Such stats make for impressive reading.
For customers who want even more performance, Quattro will electronically raise the permitted top speed to 170mph (280km/h), and pushing the Sport button to open a flap in the left exhaust tailpipe allows the evocative soundtrack to be heard in its full glory.
Such a stunning piece of engine design meant that the Audi heart strolled to an easy victory this year, amassing an impressive 380 points – 120 points more than second place. The final word, then, goes to Oleg Vasylevskyi, editor of Auto Bild (Ukraine): “The first thing that hits you is the inimitable sound, and then the performance certifies just how good this engine is.”

BMW continues to dominate the 2.5-litre to 3-litre class, and this year it’s the 3-litre bi-turbo six-cylinder gasoline heart that takes the top spot, fighting off no fewer than three other turbocharged BMW engines.
Such has been BMW’s supremacy in this segment that the only one other car maker – Mazda in 2003 and 2004 – has collected a 2.5-litre to 3-litre trophy in the history of the awards, which means that BMW engineering has come out top in this class 12 times in 14 years!
The bi-turbo six-cylinder, which powers the likes of the 1 Series M Coupé and the Z4 35is, faced stiff competition this year from the M Performance twin-power turbo diesel six-cylinder in the M550d xDrive, as well as the two twin power turbo six-cylinder engines that come in both gasoline and diesel form, and drive a host of BMW models.
But in the end, it was the bi-turbo that impressed judges the most, as Gábor Szécsényi from Az Auto explained: “This engine uses every
technical trick in the book to make sure that the end product is powerful, efficient and economical. This really is a work of engineering art.”
The inline six offers 340bhp at 5,900rpm, and such power means that the 1 M Coupé accelerates from 0 to 62mph (100km/h) in 4.9 seconds before going on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph (250km/h). Peak torque of 450Nm from 1,500rpm to 4,500rpm ensures smooth yet rapid progress and in-gear flexibility.
But power is not the only string to the N54’s bow. In the 1 M Coupé, the six-cylinder ensures frugal motoring, realising a very impressive 29.4mpg fuel economy figure on the combined cycle, and a CO2 emissions output of 224g/km.
Another jury member captivated by the BMW bi-turbo was Lorenzo Facchinetti from Auto, who said, “In this category class, no one else has managed to match BMW in terms of efficiency, power, driving pleasure and technical sophistication.”

Having won its category class since 2008, there was a general feeling this year that the evergreen M3 powerplant was set to bow out, with newer and leaner pretenders to the crown eyeing top spot in the 3-litre to 4-litre race. But pretenders to the crown are exactly what McLaren’s 3.8-litre V8 engine, Porsche’s 3.8-litre Boxer DI, Audi’s 4-litre TFSI heart and Nissan’s 3.8-litre bi-turbo unit proved to be, as the BMW M V8 rolled back the years to claim yet another famous victory.
“This engine isn’t just a winner in this category, it can also compete with much larger engines,” said Natan Tazelaar, a new jury member from the Netherlands. “Its extreme level of sportiness combined with usability and fuel-efficiency is truly unique. This engine will go into the history books as the last of a kind, though, because unfortunately for this V8, the future seems to be all about the turbo.”
Tipping the scales at 202kg, the naturally aspirated M3 V8 is seen
by many as one of the last old-school M engine developments, with BMW’s performance arm increasingly moving towards forced induction designs for most of its upcoming products, such as the new M5 and M6 models.
The M3 V8 is lighter, and more than 30mm shorter than the legendary straight-six engine it replaced (and which also won its displacement award six times in a row, between 2001 and 2006). Further technical highlights include an alternator that disconnects from the engine during acceleration to maximise power.
The M heart also features a separate throttle butterfly for each cylinder, with two stepper motors operating them on each row of cylinders. This gives the BMW M3 unit a particularly sensitive response at low speeds, together with an immediate reaction whenever the driver presses the accelerator, unleashing some 414bhp at a screaming 8,250rpm.

In retaining its Above 4-litre title, the Ferrari 458 Italia has now collected four trophies in two years – proof that this is a truly great engine and one that deserves all of its recent success, especially when considering some of the high-power, performance-orientated creations it was up against this year.
The 4,449cc unit not only had to do battle with two Mercedes-AMG offerings – the 5.5-litre V8 and the 6.2-litre beast that won this very award in 2009 and 2010 – it also had to deal with BMW M’s latest development: the already acclaimed 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 in the M5/M6, as well as Lamborghini’s Aventador heart and Ferrari’s very own 6.3-litre V12 that is housed in the new FF.
As in the Performance Engine category, in the end, the Ferrari 458 pulled clear with only a few votes left to be counted, seeing off its main threat – the turbocharged M unit – by just 16 points.
“For me, big engines like this must meet two requirements: perfect
function and genius innovation,” enthused jury member Xia Dong, from China. “The Ferrari V8 in the 458 Italia does this to perfection.”
The Maranello V8 impressed judges not only on a performance front, but also on an efficiency level. The engine represents a major step forward for the Prancing Horse in terms of emissions. With the help of DI, the new V8 is much more powerful than the previous V8, but emissions are down to 320g/km and fuel economy is at 20.6mpg on the combined cycle.
Tipping the scales at a dry weight of 1,380kg, the 458 Italia has optimal weight distribution, with 58% over the rear axle. The eight-cylinder is mated to a seven-speed, dual clutch transmission that further increases performance while delivering smoother shifts. Ferrari powertrain engineers have developed specific, sportier gear ratios to match the power and torque curves of the V8, thus ensuring high torque even at lower engine speeds.

What a year it has been for Ford and its outstanding three-cylinder turbo engine. The Blue Oval finally broke its International Engine of the Year Awards jinx by collecting New Engine and the Sub 1-litre awards, but now the diminutive 999cc unit has gone one better and made it a treble by taking top spot in the race to be crowned the overall 2012 winner.
Ford’s victory means that for the second consecutive year, a new name has been added to the hall of fame, with the Blue Oval joining last year’s first-time winner Fiat, and previous victors Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota, Mazda and Honda.
Ford’s stunning success also means that since 2009, the overall winner has had a displacement of less than 1.4 litres – and in the past two years alone, the engine size of the winning International Engine of the Year Award has been below 1 litre – proof that downsizing is here to stay.
But Ford’s task in taking top spot was not easy. To qualify, it first had to beat last year’s champion – Fiat’s
two-cylinder TwinAir – in the Sub 1-litre category. And then, to take the overall title, it faced competition from GM’s range-extender powertrain and last year’s runner-up, Volkswagen’s ever-successful 1.4-litre TSI engine.
In the end, a crushing points victory among the European judges laid the foundation for its triumph in the overall voting. Then, a solid endorsement from judges all around the world enabled the Ford to ease to first place, achieving a record tally of 401 points.
“This is a fitting victory for a truly remarkable engine,” said Dean Slavnich, co-chairman of the Awards and editor of Engine Technology International magazine. “For a three-cylinder to power a vehicle like the Ford Focus with such ease proves that the future is very, very bright for the IC engine. Power, response and very good real-world fuel consumption figures are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this engine and what it offers drivers today. Well done Ford!”
