4 Love where you learn

Vancouver Island’s natural beauty of mountains, forests and beaches, and its temperate climate provide many opportunities for outdoor recreation such as surfing, rock climbing, cycling, sailing, golfing, hiking and snowboarding.

All VIU campuses are only minutes from forest and mountain trails and oceanside destinations. Students attending VIU quickly discover that to live here is to play here.

The central Vancouver Island region has a population

of approximately 175,000 and is linked to the Greater Vancouver area through regular ferry service and frequent 15-minute flights to Vancouver International Airport, as well as downtown Vancouver.

6 Love where you learn

Opportunities exist at VIU that you won’t find anywhere else.

You’ll have the chance to explore your interests with hands-

on research opportunities for undergraduates, to experience

other cultures first-hand through our study abroad programs

and to make friendships and memories that will last you a

lifetime.

At VIU, it’s easy to love where you learn. Connect with

a community of dynamic instructors who are enthusiastic

about teaching and staying involved with developing trends

in their areas of expertise. Become a welcomed and vital part

of the VIU community, where you can participate in all of the

possibilities campus life has to offer while living in one of the

most environmentally desirable locations in Canada.

At VIU, we take “love where you learn” to heart and know you

will, too.

Cross-cultural bridges were strengthened by the recent visit of Costa Rican students Nidia Montero (red hat) and Sharon Fallas (top, centre) who spent a semester studying at VIU. The two students and VIU Tourism student Gina Bethell (right) are part of VIU's Heart of Gold Costa Rica project, which works with Costa Rican research partners to promote economic diversification through community owned agro-tourism initiatives in Costa Rica’s Santa Maria de Dota and San Marcos.

VIU physics professor Ray Penner organized an action packed “Extreme Science” show to raise funds for a charity in Africa which provides LED lighting to secondary schools in rural Malawi where students attend evening study sessions.

Enjoy your journey at VIU

VIU Japanese students Sachiko Ishibashi (right) and Chiharu Yamaguchi helped raise $22,500 for relief efforts in Japan following the earthquake and tsunami March 2011.

VIU Outdoor Recreation programs provide students with the opportunity to take part in a variety of wilderness activities at a reasonable cost. Try a new sport like kayaking, climbing, skiing, caving, rafting, surfing or hiking and meet new friends. Transportation, instruction and equipment are provided. See viu.ca/campusrec

Nanaimo is a centrally located Vancouver Island community of 87,000 and is home to the main VIU campus. The Island has the mildest Canadian climate and a spectacular landscape.

Downtown Nanaimo is steps from the harbour and features shops, pubs and outdoor eateries. A waterfront walkway and lookout, right, are popular meeting points for residents and visitors.

Far left, Dr. Duane Barker received a $413,000 federal research grant from Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada to study sea lice. He’s hiring VIU undergraduates like Danielle Lewis to help with the research.

Distinguished artists such as Hilary Peach participate in Poets on Campus, an opportunity to showcase their works with the VIU community. Hilary Peach is a local writer, audio poet, recording artist, arts activist and producer.

Homestay and Peerstay Programviu.ca/homestayThe purpose of the Homestay ($700/Month) and Peerstay ($450/month) Program is to provide international students with a supportive and welcoming environment in a Canadian family’s home. Students will have their own private bedroom and an area to study quietly while sharing the rest of the house with others. In Homestay, three meals a day are provided by the family while cooking/meal preparation is shared by all family members. Students may be taught to make their own breakfast and lunch while family members prepare dinner. Most families share household chores. Peerstay is the same except students will buy their own food and prepare all of their own meals and clean up after themselves.

This is an opportunity to learn and practice English. Host families can help students become familiar with Canadian customs and culture and introduce them to the Nanaimo community. All hosts have been carefully screened by the VIU Homestay office. The host family will pick the student up at the Nanaimo Airport or ferry terminal, provide three meals a day and offer a supportive environment.

We recommend that new international students spend at least their first semester in Nanaimo in Homestay or Peerstay.

Application deadline for Homestay/Peerstay is a minimum of 10 weeks before the start of classes. An application form will be provided with the Letter of Acceptance or is available at viu.ca/homestay.

ACCESS

Vancouver Island University was the right choice for me. I studied 3 semesters in ESL before my academic program. The nice thing about studying at VIU was that classes were small. At the start, I was shy but I learned to ask questions so that I was sure of what I learned. As a Peer Helper, I helped new international students and organized many activities. I made many friends at VIU and I enjoyed it very much. VIU definitely played a big part in my life and it will continue to benefit me in many ways.
