The Autocratic Leadership Style

The autocratic style has its advocates, but it is falling out of favor in many countries. Some people have argued that the style is popular with today's CEO's, who have much in common with feudal lords in Medieval Europe. Autocratic leadership style is often considered the classical approach. It is one in which the manager retains as much power and decision-making authority as possible. The manager does not consult employees, nor are they allowed to give any input. Employees are expected to obey orders without receiving any explanations.

The Charismatic Style This is a special leadership style commonly often associated with transformational leadership. While charisma is extremely powerful, it is difficult to learn and not that easy to define.

The Laissez Faire Leadership Style

The style is largely a "hands off" view that tends to minimize the amount of direction and face time required. Works well if you have highly trained, highly motivated direct reports. It is one in which the manager provides little or no direction and gives employees as much freedom as possible. All authority or power is given to the employees and they must determine goals, make decisions, and resolve problems on their own.

Strategic Leadership

This is practiced by the military services such as the AFP, and many large corporations. It stresses the competitive nature of running an organization and being able to out fox and out wit the competition.

The Participative Leadership Style

It's hard to order and demand someone to be creative, perform as a team, solve complex problems, improve quality, and provide outstanding customer service.

Democratic Leadership Style

The democratic leadership style is also called the participative style as it encourages employees to be a part of the decision making. The democratic manager keeps his or her employees informed about everything that affects their work and shares decision making and problem solving responsibilities. This style requires the leader to be a coach who has the final say, but gathers information from staff members before making a decision.

The skill used by a person to properly interact with others. In the business domain, the term generally refers to an employee's ability to get along with others while getting the job done.

Good interpersonal skills are a prerequisite for many positions in an organization.
