Kaci was very good from the beginning, she showed confidence and passion. She reverberated true Jamaican charm and her poise was admirable. Placing her 5th was unjust and if people out there had a say in who won, the world would have voted for her. She at least deserved 2nd place.

I didn’t get to watch the pageant on television so I can’t speak about her performance but social media certainly kept me in the loop. Honestly, I don’t even think the Ms. Universe competition should get so much publicity. Re: Kaci, yes she’s beautiful and all but it’s has gotten way too overwhelming seeing comments from all areas about her placement being unfair.

She was robbed of the crown! Jamaica should have won!

I am not going to say she should have won , but she did extremely well and deserved to be in the top three.

She deserved to be in the top three. What really irked me was that people are saying Colombia answered her questions well but didn’t realize that she had time to think. Ms. Columbia understood the questions posed to her and still turned to her translator to repeat the question in her language which bought her time to think through her answers.

The Management Trainee Programme (MTP) is a developmental tool for future Caribbean leaders of Sandals Resorts International. MTP participants benefit from many features, including exposure to all departments, immersion into online Management training powered by Harvard, working in all positions within the resorts and taking on challenge projects. In this process, there is cognisance that management competency requirements change over time, but in developing the leader of the future, character and caring is timeless, and it is core to leadership and management.

Therefore, the additional organic features of: exposure to various cultures, personalities (both the pleasing and difficult) and the whirlwind of unexpected events, seeks to build character. Most significantly, the bonding of the trainees in the group continues from cohort to cohort. The social bond developed by each group of Management Trainees is critical, and it is something that, although targeted and encouraged through orientation, has blossomed beyond plan and expectation.

This social bond carries much importance for the participants, and for the future of business which need cooperative relationships to succeed.. This is important as much inefficiency can be found at the feet of broken relationships between managers and by extension the departments they lead. Hospitality is about the social, and is not only a service to our guest but an imperative in building an atmosphere of caring and compassion--A human duty, with clear benefits for performance and excellence in industry.

Today, we highlight one of the many examples of this bonding, initiated by the current group of Management Trainees in St. Lucia where every Sunday, they gather in fellowship, rotate cooking duties, theme and location, utilize F&B skills gained, plan menus, and set about communal sharing.

Management Trainee Junior Plummer highlights the culinary journey:

“We have sort of become Internet chefs where we get recipes from online and prepare them ‘spot on’ most times. Though one would think it would become majorly competitive, it’s not who can cook the best or does better but an expansion of our palettes to try different cuisines and truly exceeding the boundaries of what we thought we knew about cooking and what we thought we were capable of. It’s a joy and privilege anytime we meet, filled with great laughter and even tears of joy.”

It is a sharing which allows each of us to continue his/her developmental journey with reminders of the core purpose of hospitality through the exchange of ideas, laughter, dreams and mutual support. Management Trainee Danielle Daley shares the importance of the bonding to reinstating lost values:

“I am guaranteed conversation that stimulates and teaches but most importantly it represents the Renaissance of an era that’s rapidly fading or has faded - dining together at the

table instead of on the sofa in front of the TV; entertaining and connecting with people not electronics; revisiting and reinforcing the importance of social graces, allowing us to be human again. We disconnect (no cell phones allowed unless it is to capture a photo to be placed in our memoirs) and we hope that this will continue even after this programme has ended and hopefully will be passed down to our children and their children.”

Colleague trainee, Andre Cleghorn shares the love:

“The concept of Discovery Dining indeed comes alive weekly, as every week a new cuisine is experimented with even if it’s our first time cooking it; we are given the opportunity to miss. Every Sunday is like a refresher to my energy, motivation and passion for the week ahead. Love them dearly.”

Others share the same feelings, as a sense of community is built through the hospitality shared:

“As a fragile individual, I normally do not open much, but trust, love and support is fostered in our connection weekly and that’s why I feel open to be free.” (Alisa Moulton)

“It’s family away from family in every sense of the word and that is what I love.” (Opal Clarke)

“The communion is priceless as our conversations are becoming more open, we begin to speak of things that trouble our minds and as such we have forged a bond and kinship that will strengthen each of us as individuals.” (Renaldo Douglas)

Connection, communion and caring are all common themes. Such is the power of genuine hospitality to each other, which we have to be reminded of it in our work life. If this continues, we can be assured of a community of individuals, Caribbean hospitality leaders that share time, ideas that will help to move the company forward into many chapters. New talent, embracing timeless values, true character….

• Evaluate the relationships between team members; is there a spirit of cooperation & helpfulness?

• How can we take steps to learn about another team member’s job & experience?

• What creative ways can we find to improve sharing and bonding of our teams?
