BIOSPHERE 2

You will depart from the resort’s front drive with our tour guide for a one-of-a-kind tour. Located in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, Biosphere 2 is the largest man-made, self-sustaining ecosystem ever built. The tour begins in the human habitat. You will see one of the apartments where the Biospherians lived for one and a half years, the farm area where they grew their crops and the kitchen where they cooked their meals. Your guide will lead you through the airlock door into the wilderness areas of Biosphere 2. You will experience firsthand the environments of this engineering marvel. First you enter the tropical savanna. The trail system then travels along the 40-foot ocean cliff where you look down into the million gallon tropical ocean. Moving down the trail, you descend into the lower savanna along the mangrove through the tropical thorn scrub and into the coastal fog desert. From the desert, you go into the technosphere. The technosphere is where mechanical systems control the Biosphere 2 environments. You then descend through a tunnel into one of two lungs. The lungs are large geodesic domes that originally prevented Biosphere 2 from exploding or imploding. This is an amazing technological/futuristic experience.. 4-WHEELING DESERT JEEP RALLY

Do you want to be involved in a little friendly competition, a great deal of fun, and an opportunity to experience the Sonoran Desert? Our desert jeep rally is the answer. Our wrangler/drivers will pick you up in open-air jeep scramblers. Once aboard you’ll select a team captain, one per jeep. The Captains will then open a packet containing explicit instructions on which direction to go, what to look for and what to record. All team members participate and this rally is not about speed “so pay attention” , everything you hear and see is important. Along the way to the trail head, which leads into the desert, each jeep "team" will give directions to their wrangler/driver, answer questions and identify landmarks. Once on the trail you’ll be searching for various desert plants, possibly recording the number of arms on a particular Saguaro, or looking for pieces of Indian Pottery strategically placed for your team. Points are accumulated for following the directions and points are deducted for driving too fast or too slow. SPELUNKING (Caving)

Locted along the Old Spanish Trail the massive hewn-rock entrance to Colossal Cave clings like a Tibetan Monastery to the Rincon Mountain slopes. A cave that has earned its name, Colossal is the largest dry cave in the country. A dry cave is no longer active and the good thing is that you can touch the formations. Cave explorers (speleologists) have never found the end of Colossal Cave. The following tours are for the non-claustrophobic, adventurous person. The cave maintains a 72° temperature year round. You'll wear hard hats and headlamps on your tour.

The Ladder Tour takes place in an exquisitely beautiful but only partially improved area of the cave. Led by a professional spelunker you’ll be provided with hats and lights. You must be willing and able to climb and pass through some very tight places. As you begin, you’ll ascend and descend “ladders” placed by work crews years ago to facilitate the exploration of this cave. Catwalks across chasms will be traversed. This will be a walk on the wild side. Narrow passageways to expansive rooms will be witnessed. Make sure you duck to miss banging your head. This two hour tour is Safe, Grand and Spectacular. Two week advance notice is required for this tour; only available on week days between 10:00am – 2:30pm. 4 hour event

TRAP & SKEET SHOOTING Tucson Trap and Skeet Club has served southern Arizona's shooting sportsman since its original incorporation in 1948. Home of the Old Pueblo Skeet Open, the Winter Chain Trap Shoot, and the annual Satellite Spring Grand American, the club is one of the largest facilities in the country. The 9000 square foot club house includes a restaurant, bar and lounge.

Trap shooting is one of the three major forms of competitive clay pigeon shooting. The others are Skeet shooting and Sporting Clays. Trap shooting has been a sport since at least 1793 when it used real birds, usually the then-extremely abundant Passenger Pigeon. Fake birds were introduced around the time of the American Civil War as the Passenger Pigeon was nearing extinction and sufficient numbers were not reliably available. Clay targets were introduced in the 1880's.

The layout of modern trap shooting has only one house that releases targets and the shooters only move through 5 different positions. The trap machine throws the birds in a random pattern limited to a 44 degree horizontal arc, with the birds exiting the house at about 47 miles per hour and traveling about 50 yards before hitting the ground.

Skeet shooting was invented by William Harnden Foster, an avid grouse hunter, in 1915 as a sport called Clock Shooting and evolved to its current setup by 1923. In 1926 a contest was held to name the new sport, and Gertrude Hurlbutt named it skeet, which is derived from the Scandinavian word for "shoot".

24

Skeet is a recreational and competitive activity where participants attempt to break clay disks flung into the air at high speed from a variety of angles. The event is in part meant to simulate the action of bird hunting. The shooter shoots from 7 positions on a semi-circle and an 8th position halfway between stations 1 and 7. There are two houses that hold devices known as "traps" that launch the targets, one at each corner of the semi-circle.

A professional guide will accompany you through the course, explaining each station. The thrill of breaking clay targets delights even those who have never shot before. There is a minimum of (20) guests required for this event. 4.5 hour event

REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexology is the application of pressure to specific points on the feet (and sometimes the hands) believed to have correspondences with various organs and systems of the body. In the United States, this modality has become popular largely as a form of message, but in other countries it is accepted as a legitimate medical treatment for conditions ranging from asthma to ear infections. Reflexology may be older than acupuncture itself, and is rooted in the same theory that energy pathways, or meridians, exist throughout the body, beginning and ending with the hands and feet, and that blockages in these pathways lead to illness. Come explore this ancient treatment, it may offer health benefits far beyond simple relaxation.

Insurance statistics show that paintball is one of the safest sports, with fewer injuries per exposure than sports like tennis, golf, and bowling. Equipment and game rules will be provided. Night games also available. Desert Jeep Rally - Do you want to be involved in a little friendly competition, a great deal of fun, and an opportunity to experience the Sonoran Desert? Our jeep rally can be customized to incorporate corporate logos and clues and games can be enjoyed either during or after the rally. Jeep rallies have been acclaimed by many Tucson visitors as one of the most interesting, exciting and memorable highlights of their trip. Come join the fun. 3.5 hour event. At the trailhead our “Scavenger Hunt Referee” will issue you the all important scavenger hunt list and assign each team to their individual trail. Once on the trail all team members will need to work together to complete their list within an hour. Remember this is a hunt….. by jeep and on foot. DÉCOR / THEME EVENTS

Theme events Southwestern style are the specialty of Destination & Conference Services at The Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa. For either on- or off-property events, here are just a few of the unique dinner themes we can customize to fit any program and budget. How the West Wasn’t - To create a non-traditional depiction of the wild west and provide your guests with a memorable and elegant evening of How the West Wasn’t. This design creates an evening of contrast, dimension and character. The black and white pattern of cowhide, applied in a variety of ways, creates the composition for this evening. The perimeter of the room/area is decorated with white fence vignettes accented with cowboy boot silhouettes and western dress accents. Conestoga buffet wagons complete this non-traditional look at the Wild West! The Old West! The sights, sounds and excitement of the Old West embrace you in this colorful celebration! Step back in time when Tucson was young and wild. Tucson, Arizona is a melting pot of cultures and traditions. This evening celebrates the Old West influence that helped create the unique personality of this desert city. Strap on a six shooter and test your skill in a shoot-out! Belly up to the western bar and wet you whistle with a shot of red-eye. The Outlaw Party - A colorful piece of the American West was the gunfighters and outlaws, and the lawmen who tried to tame them! Experience the lives of these pistol-packing, hell-raising, high-spirited cowboys and cowgirls who created the Wild West in this action packed evening Cattle Baron’s Club - The late 1800’s were a time of growth for the West. Wealthy gentlemen from the East headed out to the wilds of the western frontier to make their fortune in cattle ranching. Not wanting to forego the comfort and pleasantries of the life-style they left behind, these pioneering men brought the luxuries they were accustomed to with them. Rich draperies, artwork, tapestries, silver ornaments, a variety of musical instruments, books and gaming tables were a few of the articles that were transported from the East, and eventually were placed in the private clubs that were built throughout the West during this period. Southwestern Reflections – The raw splendor of a sunset on Arizona cliff walls is an awe-inspiring sight. The vibrant colors blaze in a fury of reds and oranges. Native Americans came to the Southwest 12,000 years ago. In these early times people were hunters and gatherers of wild plants. Following a nomadic way of life, they lived in small family groups and hunted with the migrations of the game. The only record we have of these wanderers is their pictures on stone called petroglyphs. The many interpretations of the whispers from the past range from depictions of the hunting cycle to vision quests to the doodlings of children. No matter what their origins, these pictures on the stone speak to all of us from a time when wind and stone and sky were the dominant forces of man’s exixtence.

Southwest Kokopelli - Set against the natural beauty of The Westin La Paloma, this event design provides an indigenous and colorful representation of the Southwest. In celebration of time long ago, the Kokopelli is present in art-like form throughout the event area and table design. This ancient art motif, combined with vivid colors and strong lighting, creates a modern and festive presence to this setting. Petroglyph – The Lost Art - This night offers a truly unique celebration of Native American’s and their preservation of history and storytelling through the use of Petroglyphs. Vignettes of boulders, softly painted with Petroglyph images, Kokopelli art forms, pottery and Southwestern Indian blankets and artifacts enhance the evening event. Hot Chili Pepper Nights - Hot Chili Pepper Nights celebrates the Spicer side of the southwest with a spectacular visual array of color, shapes and lights. Brightly colorful arches, chili pepper centerpieces, decorated buffet vendor carts create theme vignettes about the area. The fun, spicy flavor and excitement of south of the border is savored in this unique celebration! Mexican Fiesta - This evening celebrates the color and excitement of our south of the border friends! A spectacular visual array of color, shapes and lights greet the guests as they enter the Mercado area. Colorful arches, brightly decorated buffet vendor carts create theme vignettes about the area. The fun, flavor and excitement of south of the border is savored in this unique celebration! Taste of Tucson - Bien vienidos! The sights, sounds and excitement of the Southwest embrace you in this colorful welcome celebration – the Taste of Tucson! Tucson is a melting pot of cultures and traditions. This evening celebrates the three main facets that helped create the unique personality of this desert city. Biker Bash – Uniquely American…For hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists, the Harley Davidson marquee represents an expression of human spirit enjoyed by no other brand of vehicle, whether two or four wheeled. Harley Davidson is a name that is synonymous with a distinctive attitude and proud lifestyle. This evening provides the opportunity for guests to experience the past, present and future of a true icon of American history - the spirit of the open road. Grease – Hollywood (sometime in the late 50’s ) – the long summer days have ended and the seniors at Rydell High are ready to take charge! Armed with an arsenal of hip tunes like “You’re The One I Want,” Greased Lightening” and “Hound Dog,” this senior class will be a tough one to beat. It’s got groove, it’s got meaning. Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion – grease is the way we are feeling! “Margaritaville” – Come to the beach. This evening celebrates the color and excitement of tropical beaches with rhamadas, tiki torchs and a beach bar accented with paper flowers, fish netting and beach must haves. Tropical lighting adds to the over all theme.

Beach Bash - This evening embraces the festive personalities of a Beach Bash -- with a little “shaker of salt” Jimmy Buffet inspiration! A myriad of sights, sounds, tastes and action makes this an unforgettable night! The natural beauty of the Mesa Verde area provides the perfect location for this entertaining and energy packed celebration! Starry Starry Night – Stars are numerous beyond comprehension. Scattered like diamond chips across the cosmos, the stars look deceptively serene to the earthbound observer. Although their lives may be measured in billions of years, stars do age and die. Some go quietly, cooling into dark remnants of their former splendor. Others collapse and explode in a shattering cataclysm. But even as old stars vanish, new ones are being born in the gaseous stellar nurseries of the Universe. Set against the natural beauty of The Westin La Paloma, this evening celebrates the spectacular desert night skies…and what may lie beyond. An Evening of Elegance - The contrast of soft, flowing white fabric, the glitter of gold and patterned lighting creates a dramatic backdrop for a memorable evening. Large, white fans, enhanced with gold accents and bathed in shafts of amber light, softly embrace the dining area of the ballroom. The elegantly attired dining tables echo the surrounding ballroom beauty and theme. Crisp, white table cloths and napkins dress the table tops. Artfully designed florals of lillies with delicate white dendrobium orchids, white roses and greenery accents are displayed on crushed gold lame’ “pillows”. Soft votive candle lighting provides additional elegance to this setting.

ARIZONA NATIONAL GOLF COURSE

The Arizona National at Sabino Springs is an upscale daily fee golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones. A proponent of traditional design concepts that reward heroic shot making, Jones incorporated much of Sabino Springs’ existing Sonoran Desert landscape, allowing the land to dictate the course’s distinctive personality.

STARR PASS GOLF COURSE

Designed by Robert Cupp and Craig Stadler with PGA Tour action in mind, the Starr Pass Golf Course is a commanding desert-style lay out, delicately routed through crags, cacti, rocks and ravines.

OMNI TUCSON NATIONAL GOLF RESORT & SPA

William Nanini is the founder of this marvelous facility. Tucson National is comprised of three nines, the Gold, the Orange and the Green. The Gold/Orange combination, which the pros play, is relatively open and gently contoured, while the Green nine meanders through steep elevation changes and presents some unusual up hill/down hill shot making opportunities not typically encountered in Tucson. The course is beautifully defined by bunkers and the eighteenth hole is considered one of the finest and toughest finishing holes.
