"The Twenty-four Inch Gauge" June 1998 1 INTRODUCTION “The Twenty-four-inch Gauge is an instrument used by operative Masons to measure and lay out their work.” . . . but we, as Free and Accepted Masons, are taught to use it for a more noble and glorious purpose. This "24-Inch Gauge" is to be used to measure and lay out the work, of the Masonic Lodge. It being divided into eight equally important chapters, we are instructed to use the whole as a source for the purpose of improving lodge fellowship, lodge service to others, lodge programs of Masonic substance and leadership development of lodge brothers and officers. "The 24-Inch Gauge" is to help lodge officers develop an agenda that will be educational, interesting, exciting, inspiring and designed to develop an appreciation for the Power of Freemasonry among members and guests. It is a tool to help us "improve ourselves in Masonry" and in every other way. "The 24-Inch Gauge" is a compilation of educational and programming ideas from different sources. It includes the "New Leadership Manual" (Chapter 4). This handbook is a convenient resource to assist in planning lodge programs and activities that will stimulate enthusiasm and loyalty. It is designed to help change dull, "business meetings" into ones with minimal business time and with programs to fill the needs of brethren in search of more Light in Masonry. "The 24-Inch Gauge" replaces the former Officer's Training Guide which has been used by Masonic leaders for the past 25-30 years as a guide to lodge operations in the Jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of the State of New York. It does not replace the need for officers and brethren to participate in Leadership Courses, Training Seminars, Masonic Study Groups, or to read other Masonic Literature. It is a set of tools to help lodge officers and the brethren become more effective leaders so as to better stimulate all to be more involved in the process of making good men better. “The Twenty-four-Inch Gauge” was originally designed and complied in 1993 and since updated by members of the Leadership Services Committee from “Lodge Service Letters” Articles, Programs, Guides, the revised “Officers Training Guide” and the “Road to the East.” Continuous improvement makes us all better. If you have any suggestions for improving “The Twenty-four Inch Gauge,” please communicate with us. Your suggestions, if acceptable, will be included in the next edition. INTRODUCTION

“The Twenty-four-inch Gaugeis an instrument used by operative Masons

ELEVEN REASONS FOR BEING LOYAL TO FREEMASONRYor

THE POWER OF FREEMASONRYTaking pride in our fraternity

1. Freemasonry is the oldest and most prestigious fraternal organization known to recordedhistory. The blueprint for fraternalism.

2. Fraternalism is needed in our present society more than ever before.a) Members of a family learn to love, respect, appreciate, have compassion for and to

live harmoniously with each other.b) Freemasonry is an expansion of the family circle. Masons learn to be better brothers

within the Masonic family and thence to the world at large.

3. A genius of Freemasonry is the emphasis it places on the need to support a set of moralvalues which has withstood the test of time. It is a privilege to be loyal to that fraternitywhich continues to stabilize a moral code that is being eroded by indecision, experimentationand indifference by others.

4. A second genius of Freemasonry is its proposition that one cannot build a better societywithout first building better ingredients of that society -- e.g.: men. We can be proud of ourRitual, which is filled, with lessons of how to be better and more "upright" men.

5. Freemasons played a noble and impressive role in the formation of the United Statesgovernment. Much of the insights, concerns and brilliance of Masonic stalwarts such asGeorge Washington, Ben Franklin, Peyton Randolph, Robert Livingston and scores of othershelped to develop that profound document we call our Constitution. Every Freemason can beproud of the American and Masonic heritages which are so closely related. The concepts ofliberty, freedom and fraternity are Masonic concepts.

6. The Masonic Home at Utica is an example of Masonic principle put into action. It is a senseof satisfaction to know that at the Home, over 450 individuals are guests of the New YorkState Freemasons.

7. The Masonic Medical Research Laboratory, also at Utica, and operated by the Grand Lodgeof Free & Accepted Masons of the State of New York, continues to make regular andimportant contributions in medical research. This work ultimately will lengthen and enhancethe quality of life of every human being.

8. Fraternities can help to break down the greatest of all barriers to a healthy society -- thecaste system that grows out of uncontrolled egos. Freemasonry is unique in this effort byteaching that it is a place "for the high, the low, the rich, the poor to meet together -- on thelevel". This one important contribution alone is worth all the support that can be given toFreemasonry.

9. Freemasonry is an international Fraternity. It exists in nearly every country except wheretotalitarian governments outlaw it by decree. Freemasonry is perhaps the strongest tie thatbinds the world into a universal brotherhood. It certainly has the potential to be even astronger cord for that noble purpose.

10. Freemasonry is an educational institution. It teaches that a part of being a Freemason is tolearn to improve oneself. It offers and promotes many opportunities for its members to growas individuals.

11. Freemasonry is probably the first, and certainly continues to be, the strongest force topromote ecumenism.

This is only a suggested format. Every meeting night should include a program. Every meetingshould also include a "Masonic Minute." A five to ten minute talk containing some Masonic Light,given by any brother. Besides the suggested programs, you will have an Official Visit from theDistrict Deputy Grand Master. You also could invite the Staff Officer and the Assistant GrandLecturer for a program relevant to their responsibilities. You should also plan Degree Nights, withactual candidates or exemplars, which could be at Stated or Special Communications.

Use this form to plan your tentative programming schedule for the year. Keep in mind that the Twenty-Meeting Set-Up is just a suggestion. Dates and times for lodge officer meetings (for officer formation,training, rehearsals and planning) should be included in your term plan. You should also plan SpecialPrograms for non-meeting nights, weekends and Summer Activities.

RECOMMENDED PROGRAM FOR INCREASING ATTENDANCE

1. A PLAN FOR EACH COMMUNICATION. Make every meeting aninteresting night. Plan Programs. Invite guest speakers, use ideas in this booklet,make use of the Masonic Service Association's "Short Talk Bulletins", Digests andVideos. Need more ideas? Contact the Grand Lodge Leadership ServicesCommittee. However, remember to stick within the bounds of propriety, goodsense and always circumscribed by Masonic Law.

2. RESPECT THE TIME OF YOUR BRETHREN. Start the meeting on time.Have your business in order and coordinated with the Secretary. Keep yourbusiness meeting as short as possible. See program timelines on page 117.

3. PUBLICIZE EVERY MEETING IN ADVANCE. Advertise coming eventsand activities in your Lodge newsletter and in local newspapers.

4. APPOINT AN ATTENDANCE COMMITTEE. Follow up on your absentees.Contact them by mail or phone and visit all local members. Make regular visits tothe sick, aged and shut-ins.

5. GIVE EVERY SIDELINER SOMETHING TO DO. Give those sideliners aspecial reason for coming. Plan a "Back To Basics" Night, where the sidelinerscan speak on subjects that interest them or when they may wish to do DegreeWork.

6. PLAN SPECIAL OCCASIONS. Awards, Birthdays, Anniversaries, PastMasters' Presentations.

7. DEVELOP SOCIAL LIFE ACTIVITIES. Plan Families' and Ladies' NightPrograms.

8. EXEMPLIFY THE WORK. Be serious, sincere and dignified. Rehearse theopening and closing. Rehearse for Degrees and special programs.

9. HAVE PRIDE IN THE OFFICERS OF THE LODGE. Every Brother shouldhave an understanding of the importance and role of each Officer. The Officersshould be a team.

10. HAVE A BIG BROTHER (Mentor or Shepherding) PROGRAM. This isnecessary for all candidates. A Brother should be assigned to a Candidate andwork with him and help him in his first year of Masonry.

NOTE: Many lodges have taken advantage of this program with good results and haveincreased their attendance and membership.

THE MEETING IS THE PAY-OFF

PRELIMINARY CHECKS:

1. Confer in advance with the Secretary on:a. the program agenda: it should be written and he should have a copyb. any correspondence and/or issues he has -- you may wish him to emphasize,

shorten or postpone certain items.2. Remind the Sr. Deacon, or another appropriate officer, that you want each brother to

be greeted. A welcome handshake sets the tone for an enjoyable evening.3. Confer with the officer that sets up the Lodge and check that all is in place. Advise

him of any special needs you have for that evening's program.4. Shake hands and talk to your members and visitors. If there are any strangers whom

you may wish to introduce, obtain their names (and correct pronunciation), titles andhome lodge.

5. When an interesting program has been well advertised, previously unknown Masonsmay show up. Designate several officers in advance who can conduct a brief andcourteous examination.

6. If many ranking visitors are expected, appoint a qualified overseer of Protocol.7. Appoint a sideliner to sit with a newly raised Brother if his Mentor is an officer or is

unavailable.

THE MEETING ITSELF:1. Begin on time.2. Speak loudly and clearly, but do not rush.3. Know your agenda well enough to be able to move smoothly and decisively from

one item to another.4. If you have properly prepared yourself in advance, the evening will be a success, so

relax and enjoy yourself.5. Recognize visitors by proper titles and names.6. Ensure the observance of Masonic etiquette at all times. Brothers must be

recognized by the Master before initiating discussion.7. You, as Master, have the gavel, and if a subject gets out of hand, use it to terminate

discussion.8. Handle routine business with dispatch.9. Have every meeting contain an aspect of Masonic "light", especially if the program is

a non-Masonic topic.10. When a guest speaker arrives, have him escorted into the Lodge without undue

delay. Place him in the East to the Master's immediate right. As soon as practicable,conclude the business and give the speaker a proper and courteous introduction.

11. When the speaker has concluded his remarks, or when you have completed yourprogram -- CLOSE! Do not permit anyone to start a new discussion.

12. Always leave plenty of time for fellowship over refreshments.

That is all there is to making your program a SUCCESS.

ASONIC etiquette belongs to the empire of good Manners,together with certain additional concepts peculiar toFreemasonry. We study it because we are convinced of its

power to help maintain harmony. It is a form of courtesy to the individualand a manifestation of respect to the Craft.

Every aspect of the entire Masonic system promotes an attitude ofreverence and respect in order to sustain unity and harmony.

Harmony is the first law of the Lodge. Where discord enters,Freemasonry leaves. For one man to live in unity with another, is the veryessence of the Craft. Etiquette helps to prevent schisms and discords fromarising.

A unique and evolutionary creation of the Fraternity Masonicetiquette had its foundations laid by those Operative Masons to whom, ascathedral builders, architecture was more an art than a trade, and wholearned refinement from their daily work. Its superstructure arose,generation by generation, through the decline of cathedral building, thetwo centuries of transition, through the formative period of theSpeculative Craft, and has evolved to its present stage of nearly threecenturies of experience in tens of thousands of Ancient Craft Lodges. Itstands on a level with the Landmarks, the Constitutions, the Ritual, andthe Symbols of Freemasonry.

The information in this book, in some cases, is guided by laws,regulations or edicts adopted by Grand Lodge. However, for the mostpart, the writing represents rather conceptions of the subjects drawn fromexperience and observation. They are offered as counsel, advise,suggestion and enlightenment.

Pages are divided into sections. The subjects of the sections arearranged alphabetically for convenience.

If reader discovers omissions, or feels that full justice has not beendone on a subject, he is invited to communicate with us. His suggestions, ifacceptable, will be included in the next edition.

ebster's UNABRIDGEDDICTIONARY defines theword etiquette as “the

established rule of procedure and ceremonyin a court or in any official or other body.” Itmay be defined for the present purposes asthat set of conventions, rules written orunwritten, customs, and traditions by whichMasons are expected to govern their speechand actions when engaged in the rites andceremonies of the Craft when in Masonicassemblies, and in their behavior toward eachother as individual Masons. Either of thesedefinitions, like any others that might beframed, is dry and inadequate, and servesonly as a general indication of the nature ofthe subject. Etiquette is best defined by itsown practices, many of which, as they aregenerally observed in the Grand Jurisdictionof New York, will be described in pages tofollow. Emerson said that, if good mannerswere lost, it would be necessary for the nextgentleman to rediscover them. This applieswith full force to Masonic etiquette: withoutit our Fraternity would be impossible.

Through Masonic etiquette, Masonsacknowledge and express respect for theCraft; make pleasant contacts with theirfellows; smooth the paths of duty; establishan equality of treatment for all Brethren,whatever be their station or conditions;protect the good name of the Fraternity; andgreatly assist in establishing that harmonyand unity which is one of the great aims ofFreemasonry. The influences of Masonicetiquette touch the life of every Mason atevery point, and whatever it touches itbeautifies and ennobles.

Where a group of Masons act as aunit, as in a Lodge Communication, etiquettetakes the form of proper decorum. Loud talk,restless moving about, laughter, smoking,flippancy, irreverence toward the WorshipfulMaster and other constituted officers of theLodge, passing between the Altar and theEast, omission of the Sign of Fidelity, givingno heed to the business in hand, improper

entering and leaving—no man needs toconsult a book of etiquette in order to acceptthe fact that such indecorous behavior isdangerous to the harmony of the Lodge. It isin such an atmosphere that ill will and hardfeelings, not to mention the more seriousmenace of schism and feud, are most likely totake root to the great danger of the Craft. AWorshipful Master who permits the intrusionof such indecorum is not faithful to the dutiesof his office.

The oldest of all our records, theRegius Manuscript, written in 1390 A.D.,emphasizes the necessity for paying duerespect to the Craft. In the Constitutions of1723, published by our Grand Lodge in itsBook of Constitutions, it is specified, “AMason is obliged by his Tenure, to obey themoral law . . . A Mason is a peaceablesubject to the Civil Powers . . . The Personsadmitted members of a Lodge must be goodand true men . . . You are not to hold privateCommittees (in defiance of the Lodge), orseparate conversation, without leave from theMaster. nor to talk of anything impertinent orunseemly, nor interrupt the Masters orWardens, or any Brother speaking to theMaster, nor behave yourself ludicrously orjestingly while the LODGE is engaged inwhat is serious or solemn; but to pay dueReverence to your Master, Wardens, Fellowsand put them to worship”; that is, pay themthe respect due their office.

To show how the centuries jointogether on this subject, and how the samenecessity for decorum is discovered, thefollowing is an excerpt from an address byGrand Master M∴W∴John A. Dutton to hisDistrict Deputy Grand Masters in 1929:

“In your official visits and at all othertimes, you are expected to exercise,supervision over the various Lodges in yourDistricts. When you attend a Communicationof a Lodge, see that the Lodge observesproper decorum. It seems unnecessary toremind you that smoking should not beallowed in any Lodge while at work. A

Lodge Communication should be conductedwith that degree of order and decorum thatwe expect to find in the church.

“At the conferring of Degrees, beparticular to see that nothing boisterouscreeps into the Work. The Degrees should beconferred not only with as perfect ritualisticform as possible, but also withimpressiveness. The impression made uponthe candidate in his First Degree in Masonrywill remain with him through his entireMasonic life. Laughter and frivolity have noplace in the conferral of any Degrees.Particular attention is called to theinstructions for the Third Degree in themeeting of the candidates by the ruffians. Ithas no place in the conferring of the Third orany other Degree. Degrees should beimpressive.”

Addressing the ChairThe rules of order in Freemasonry do

not permit discussion, during aCommunication, among the Brethren. TheBrother who has anything to say to theLodge, whether it be to enter discussion or tomake or second a motion, must rise to hisfeet, give the sign, and address theWorshipful Master, retaining the sign untilseated.

Aged and InfirmMembers of a Lodge who, because of

age or infirmity, find it either difficult orimpossible to attend the assemblies of theirBrethren, stand in need of specialconsideration by their Lodge; and, because oftheir condition, they are particularlyappreciative of the kindliness or courtesiesthat may be shown to them. A Lodge willmaintain its contacts with them; will see thatthey are visited; will send them messages onspecial occasions, and perhaps encourage itsmembers to remember them now and againwith appropriate gifts or other reminders.Some Lodges follow the admirable custom of

holding an annual “Patriarch's Night” inhonor of aged members; others make it apractice at certain intervals to send vehiclesfor those physically able to attend Lodge butwho haven't the means.

AltarNo Brother shall pass between the

Altar and the East while the Lodge is atLabor, except when required to do so byritualistic performance. There should be noobstruction between the East and the ThreeGreat Lights; and, since the Great Lights arethe particular responsibility of theWorshipful Master, no Brother should everobscure his view of them, except asnecessary during the conferral of Degrees.

Symbolically the Altar is a cube inshape, though in practice it is frequentlymade oblong. Its top should be at least largeenough to hold the Open Bible. The ballotbox should never rest upon the Bible but byits side or on a small stand or table, west ofthe Altar.

The Altar must not be covered ordecorated with the national or any other flag,although it may be draped with a black altarcloth underneath the Bible in observance ofthe death of a Lodge Brother, or by directionof the Grand Master. (See under “MemorialObservance”)

The shape, size, accouterments, andlocation of the Altar have together asymbolism of their own. It is in the center ofthe Lodge room. All ritualistic work is donearound it. At its foot the candidate isobligated and brought to light. From it theHoly Bible sends out its rays like the sun inthe midst of its planets. It is the nucleus ofthe Masonic life—the sacred point within thecircle of the Brotherhood. Its sacredness isthe guiding principle in all our attitudetowards it.

AnteroomAs soon as a Brother enters a Masonic

hall to attend a Communication he comesunder the sway of Masonic etiquette. If he is

late, he should not indulge in loud talkingthat may be heard in the Lodge, and hisdemeanor toward other Brethren, whom hemay meet there, should be courteous andrespectful—there, as well as elsewhere,Masonry does not give any man license totake personal liberties with another! This isespecially true if any candidates are presentwaiting their call to the preparation room; togive them the impression that vulgar conduct,levity, practical joking, or other forms ofdisrespect are countenanced by the Craft as amisrepresentation of the Lodge. The Tilerhas it especial]y in charge to see that anyonein the anteroom observes the same decorumas he would in all other precincts of theTemple. Moreover, the Tiler, if he rightlyunderstands his own art, will see that theanteroom is kept clean and in order; theaprons neatly piled; books, newspapers, andlitter not left scattered about; a fitting place,in short, through which to make entrance intoa Masonic Lodge.

In the Jurisdiction of the Grand Lodgeof the State of New York there is noauthorized Tiler's Oath. No person is to beadmitted into a Masonic Lodge except bypermission of the Worshipful Master. Whena would-be visitor appears, it is the duty ofthe Tiler to notify the Worshipful Master ofthe presence of the visitor. The WorshipfulMaster may appoint a Committee to examinethe visitor and report to the Masterconcerning the visitor's order, and if he hasconvinced the examining Committee that heis a Mason, then in all probability theWorshipful Master will grant him permissionto enter.

If a Brother is late, he does not enterthe Lodge until permission is obtained fromthe Master, through the Junior Deacon andthe Tiler, for him to do so. He should enterthrough the Outer Door only.

The Inner Door is for use only duringthe conferral of Degrees. To permit it to beused otherwise is a disturbance or dislocationof the entire system of the ritual. It is theTiler's duty to see that this rule is rigidlyenforced.

ApronWhen wearing clothing that would

conceal the Apron, always wear the Apronon the outside of the garment, except whenwearing a formal cutaway (tails).

A Grand Lodge officer should wearthe Apron of his office, not only to payproper respect to the Lodge or Grand Lodge,but also as a means to identify the office heholds or the highest office held, except whenfilling an office in the advancing line ofLodge officers. At Masonic MemorialServices, all Lodge officers and Brethren,regardless of station, should be clothed inwhite aprons. The Grand Master may grantdispensation for wearing officer regalia forspecial occasions outside the Lodge room.Inside the Lodge at public functions, whenthe Bible is open on the altar, officers shouldwear regalia, and Brethren should be clothedin Aprons.

When gloves are worn, there are nofixed rules as to their detail, except that theyshould be white.

The Apron of a Master or a PastMaster, unless he also carries the title ofRight Worshipful, should be white, trimmedwith blue and silver alone, never purple andgold. (See “Jewels.”)

BallotThe Grand Lodge Constitutions make

discussion of the ballot a Masonic offense.Except for the Holy Bible, the ballot is themost sacred thing in the Lodge. Every Masonowes to his Lodge the duty of protecting itagainst poor material, and every Mason owesto every petitioner a fair ballot the onlyprotection a petitioner has against unfairdiscrimination and unreasonable prejudice.The upright man and Mason will never allowpersonal spite to influence his behavior at theballot box. The Tiler, if a member of theLodge, has a right to ballot and should beurged to do so.

Bible PresentationIt is the custom in this Grand

Jurisdiction, for Lodges to present to eachcandidate a copy of the Holy Bible.

The Bible may be presented at thetime the Master of the Lodge believesappropriate. When presented in the FirstDegree, it preferably is done prior to theMaster's work at the end of the Degree.

When presenting the Bible always giveit to the candidate open. Thus it is a symbolof the way the Book lay upon the Altar;symbolically, that the Bible be opened andread frequently in the home.

“Brother” is a TitleIn the usages of Freemasonry,

“Brother” is neither a sentimental or familiarform of address but is a title -as much so asWorshipful, Right Worshipful, or MostWorshipful, and must always be used assuch. A man does not attend a LodgeCommunication in his capacity as a privateindividual; he is not Joe, or Bill, or John. Heis there in his capacity as a Master Mason,and for this reason, should never in openLodge refer to “Bill B.”, but always to“Brother B.” in the same literal sense as anyother officer in Lodge or Grand Lodge.

Always address a Grand LodgeOfficer at any Communication by his correcttitle. He in turn must show the same courtesyto other Grand Lodge Officers present aswell as to the Worshipful Master and to theBrethren of the Lodge. The rule of etiquetteshould be precisely observed, no matter whatties of family or friendship may exist. Theuse of the word “Sirs” in conjunction withany Masonic title is improper.

ChaplainAs an officer of the Lodge, or while

acting in that capacity, the correct place forthe Chaplain during a Communication is inthe East at the Worshipful Master'simmediate left.

During the recital or reading of thoseportions of Scripture assigned to theperambulation in each of the Degrees, theChaplain should stand at the Altar, taking aposition on its west side, facing the Master.Full directions for the correct rendition ofthis ceremony are given in DistrictConventions. (See under “Prayer.”)

The prayers and those portions of theScriptures assigned to the circumambulationsshould be recited or read by the Chaplain,standing west of the Altar facing East. AChaplain may kneel to pray.

not put his title as such on the envelope. Itshould be addressed as follows:

Discussion in LodgeMany Lodge propositions are decided

by ballot because the business of Masonry isso democratically managed. The discussionof such proposals and business in Lodge,Grand Lodge, and other assemblies has alarge importance and must be properlysafeguarded lest it be corrupted intoacrimonious argument or degenerate into aconflict of personalities; in other words,discussion also has its etiquette .

Etiquette for the Fraternity is set forthwith great weight and feeling in the OldCharges, to which prior reference was made.Regulations governing discussion in GrandLodge are prescribed in the Rules of Order,

printed with the Constitutions; regulationsfor discussions in Lodge are imbedded hereand there in the Constitutions, are stated inLodge By-Laws, and elsewhere. They allbelong to a prescribed mode of conductdefined as Masonic etiquette, especially inour discussions.

There are three great prohibitions inall Masonic discussions:

All sectarian discussion, all argumentor statement pro or con as to the merits ofpolitics, of any given religion or theologicalcreed, of racial questions, of privatebusiness, or of any other non-Masonicsubject by which men are divided intoclasses, feuds, schisms, or are opposed onsectarian issues, is at all times forbidden.

It is strictly forbidden to discuss apetitioner (other than to read his petition andindicate whether the report of theInvestigating Committee is favorable orunfavorable), and for a Mason to reveal howhe has voted, or in any way to seek topersuade members to vote one way oranother.

All offensive personal remarks, allexpressions of bitterness or ill will,acrimoniousness, and all or any slurs uponthe Lodge or its officers, Grand Lodge or itsofficers, and the Fraternity itself, and allflippant, unseemly, or discourteous remarksaddressed to the Lodge or to its officers, arecondemned alike by the principles ofcommon courtesy and etiquette and by thedisciplinary laws of the Craft.

A Brother wishing to participate in adiscussion in open Lodge should always rise,come to the Sign of Fidelity and whenrecognized by the Worshipful Master andwith his permission, thank him for hisrecognition, and then speak on the subject atissue in the fewest possible words. Theprivilege of the floor should not be used asan opportunity to deliver a speech merely forits own sake.

District ConventionsSee under “Grand Lecturer.”

District DeputyGrand Master

In the absence of the Grand Master orDeputy Grand Master, when the DistrictDeputy Grand Master (DDGM) visits aLodge in his District, whether it be formallyor informally, he does so at the direction of;and as the Deputy of, the Grand Master. Heshould never be addressed by his first nameduring any part of Lodge ceremonies. Suchconduct demeans his office.

Except when the Grand Master orDeputy Grand Master are present, whenvisiting Lodges in his District, the DDGMshould always be announced by the Tiler andthe Junior Deacon as “about to enter.” Henever “craves” nor “seeks admittance,” forhe may walk in, and just as either the GrandMaster or Deputy Grand Master could, hemay take the gavel from the Master, andpreside over the meeting, whether the Masterwills it or not.

A District Deputy Grand Master isrequired by our constitutional law to visitofficially every Lodge in his District at leastonce during his term. He comes there toperform certain specific duties required byGrand Lodge and to give the Brethren themessage of the Grand Master. This messagecontains matters of importance concerningthat which the Grand Master, in his wisdom,deems necessary to inform the Craft. Theremarks of the DDGM then are of supremeimportance. It is his evening. No program ofspeeches, not related to his visit, should beallowed. What he has to say should standout; nothing must detract from it.

Except upon his own expressinvitation, nobody should sit in the East withthe District Deputy Grand Master during hisofficial visit except the Lodge's Master,Chaplain, and the Grand Lodge Staff Officer(GDC, GS, GSB) assigned to the Districtand accompanying the DDGM.

Other exceptions are elective GrandLodge Line Officers—the Grand Master,Deputy Grand Master, Senior Grand

Warden, Junior Grand Warden, GrandTreasurer, Grand Secretary. As a matter ofcourtesy no District Deputy Grand Masterwould be so forgetful as not to insist that anyPast Grand Master honoring him (theDDGM) should occupy a seat in the East.

In his District, the DDGM isoutranked only by the Grand Master and/orDeputy Grand Master.

The District Deputy Grand Master isthe personal and official representative of theGrand Master in his District. Every honor,every token of respect due to the GrandMaster must, therefore, be paid to hisDeputy. In this way the office of GrandMaster is honored through the office of hisDeputy.

The Constitutions of Grand Lodgerequires that a Lodge shall pay the expensesof the District Deputy Grand Masterincidental to his official visit. In someDistricts, where the Lodges are widelyscattered, a visit means an expenditure oftime, energy, and money, and while theDDGM is always happy to give his time andenergy, he should not be called upon to spendhis own money for purposes in no senseprivate to himself; especially in this case,when his coming is not in his own name, butas a personal representative of the GrandMaster. It is an act of courtesy, both to theGrand Master and to his personalrepresentative, to discharge so elementary anobligation.

District DinnersIn many of the Districts having some

form of District Association, it is a custom tohold an annual banquet to which themembers of all the Lodges are invited.

If a Grand Master, his Deputy, anappointed representative of either, or anyother speaker, is to attend a District (orLodge) dinner, all possible arrangements formeeting and entertaining him should be madein advance. In the case of the Grand Masterand Deputy Grand Master, thesearrangements, including the program outline,

must be cleared through their respectiveGrand Marshal or Deputy Grand Marshal.

When the speaker is introduced, hisfull title (if he has one) should be used, hispresent office, or offices, named, and suchother information concerning him should begiven to enable the audience to have thespeaker identified in their minds. The speakeralways should have prior notification as towhether or not the attire is to be formal.

It is to be hoped the time will comewhen the questionable story will go the sameway as drinking, gambling and profanity asbeing unworthy of the dignity of Masonicsanctuaries and assemblies. Anything of aquestionable character, anything of an “offcolor” nature, is an affront to the gentlemenin the audience and an affront to GrandLodge itself, there represented.

Dress (Attire)The matter of attire depends entirely

upon circumstances and is a point GrandLodge leaves to each constituent Lodge todecide, though much may be said in favor offormal attire, since it is a mark of respect tothe Fraternity.

One thing is certain: if any of theofficers are required to wear formal attire, allthe officers should wear it without exception;and if he and his colleagues wear it, theWorshipful Master should use a hat tocorrespond—not a soft hat, a straw hat, or acap. The members will dress according toprivate taste—normally with tie and jacket—and it is proper that they enter the Lodgeroom with Apron properly arrangedbeforehand, and any other regalia, jewels,etc., in due order.

There is a philosophy in dress, as in somany other things, and the dress proper toMasonic occasion is no exception. Itsprinciple is good taste; its practice is to wearsuch attire as shows respect to theBrotherhood and expresses the dignity ofMasonry.

Election to OfficeThere is neither law nor tradition that

gives any officer of the Lodge a “right” to beadvanced to either an elected or appointedoffice.

In many Lodges the officers seem tobelieve that, if one of their number is absent,the officer next lower should occupy thechair of the absent one. Advancement ofelected or appointed officers is proscribed byThe Constitutions and is explained in theStandard Monitor under the SecondPrerogative of the Worshipful Master:

“Second Prerogative. — To filltemporarily all vacancies that may occur inthe Lodge offices.

“As it is his duty to set the Craft atwork, it is necessary that he have the activecooperation of all the officers, and if any areabsent he has full power to select from theBrethren present such as he may deemcompetent to discharge the duties. There isno advancement by right. If the SeniorWarden is absent the Junior Warden does notex-officio fill the West. The Master appointsa Senior Warden pro tem.”

The sole and only generalrequirement—save in the two or threeinstances where a man must have heldprevious office—is that a possible officeholder shall have the necessary fitness. Butprevious office holding is no guarantee ofthis. The officer should be advanced only ifhe is fit or proves his proficiency foradvancement. And if he is not advanced forlack of proficiency or fitness, neither he norhis friends should take offense. A Brothermay be unfit to hold any Masonic office forany number of reasons, all of them creditableto himself; such a thing could be said ofmany excellent Masons. They are not castfor office holding, and will themselves behappier and their Lodge be the gainer if theyuse other opportunities for service. If aLodge cannot “drop from the line” anyincumbent of proved unfitness withoutengendering ill feelings thereby, it needs to

instill into its members a clearer conceptionof the Masonic system and a feeling ofgreater loyalty, to its welfare.

Emblems and SymbolsThe symbolical system is absolutely

essential to Freemasonry. This system is thefoundation of our Ritual, interrelationshipsand character development—even Masonicetiquette. It is the Craft's one method ofteaching its principles to its members, and ifthat method is mutilated its teaching suffers.For these reasons it is of the utmostimportance that a Lodge shall take pains tosee that the emblems and symbols are of acorrect design, are well cared for, and areplaced at the correct positions.

The Altar should be in the center ofthe room, its sides square with the sides ofthe room. The Great Pillars should be of thecorrect height and design and placed one oneach side of the Inner Door, the Pillarbearing the Celestial Globe to stand at thecandidate's right as he enters. The Ashlarsshould be on the Master's platform, or one ofits steps: one at either side; the PerfectAshlar near the Southeast corner, the RoughAshlar toward the Northeast. See theStandard Monitor for these locations.

The Letter G should be above theMaster's chair, and should be of tastefuldesign. The appurtenances used in theMiddle Chamber Lecture of the SecondDegree should be adequate in size, dignifiedin appearance, correct in design, andreplaced when they become worn from use.Slides should not be used in the MiddleChamber Lecture as a substitute for physicalparticipation by the candidates. The HolyBible should be handled with care andreverence and when any of its pages becomesoiled or torn they should be cleaned orreplaced. A bookmarker should never be inevidence on the open Bible. Jewels, regalia,staffs, Aprons should be kept in good order,never suffered to grow shabby or be handledcarelessly or in a manner showing neglect.

No individual who has private theoriesconcerning the emblems and symbols shouldbe permitted to violate the requirements andusages of the Craft. Freemasonry is no man'sprivate property, and no man has the right toimpose his private notions upon anythingappertaining to the Ritual. And, by the sametoken, it is the height of impropriety for aLodge to permit any member's name to beengraved upon the embroidered or paintedon the dressings of the Altar, stamped orembossed upon the Holy Bible, or otherwisedisplayed in, or on, anything belonging to theRitual and its exemplification.

FlagThe national Flag should be on a staff

placed in the East, in the corner to theMaster's right. It is improper to use the Flagas a drapery for the Altar, as bunting, hungwith stripes vertical as a banner or standardor for decoration purposes, or in lieu ofupholstery or as drapery on, or in, any of thechairs, seats, or stations of the Lodge room.The Flag should be given precedence over aLodge banner, or any other banner, emblem,or device used for a similar purpose in theLodge room, in public processions, or whendisplayed on a Masonic building. If a Lodgebanner is used it should never be placed inthe East—on or next to the Master's dais—but behind either the Treasurer's or theSecretary's desk, preferably the latter. Grand HonorsGrand Honors are a mark of respect,

in a form inherited from the past, accorded toGrand Lodge officers, and, under certainconditions, to Worshipful Masters and toPast Masters, at the discretion of theWorshipful Master of the Lodge. In a GrandCommunication they are given to the GrandMaster and to visiting Grand Masters,always led by the Grand Marshal. In a Lodge

Communication they are given to GrandLodge officers if officially present as such,and whether or not they are given to PastGrand Lodge Officers must be decided by theWorshipful Master.

Grand Honors always must be led bythe Master in Lodge meetings, except whengiven to the Grand Master or Deputy GrandMaster; in such cases they are led by theGrand Marshal, Deputy Grand Marshal orby one deputized to act as such. Save in theexception above noted they should always beled by the Master of the Lodge or by one towhom he has surrendered the gavel. NoBrother is to be formally received and givenGrand Honors after the reception of theGrand Master, the Deputy Grand Master, orthe District Deputy Grand Master except attheir discretion. Applause should neverfollow the giving of Grand Honors sinceGrand Honors are a form of Masonicapplause.

Worshipful Masters who are uncertainas to the correct manner in which GrandHonors should be given may call upon theGrand Lecturer for an explanation and anexemplification at a District Convention; thesame may be obtained at anytime through anAssistant Grand Lecturer.

Grand Lecturer andDistrict Conventions

The District Deputy Grand Mastershould call a District Convention to order.That done he introduces the Grand Lecturer,who immediately proceeds with the work ofthe Convention.

At the time of presenting him, theDistrict Deputy should, as a fitting courtesy,hand the Grand Lecturer the gavel. At theclose of the Convention the Grand Lecturerwill return it to him.

It is the principal duty of the GrandLecturer to teach the Standard Work exactlyas it is prescribed by Grand Lodge; neitherhe nor any other Mason has power to changeit. Any effort to argue with him as to what

the Standard Work is, or should be, or anyattempt to embarrass him by trick questions,is out of place.

The Assistant Grand Lecturer shouldmake the assignment of officers in advanceof the Convention. This courtesy is due theBrothers thus selected. If after acceptingsuch an assignment a Brother discovers thathe will be unable to attend, he owes thecourtesy to his District of sending immediateword to that effect to the Assistant GrandLecturer. It derogates from the dignity aswell as from the success of a Convention tomake changes or assignments at the lastminute.

Every Lodge officer should attend hisDistrict Convention each year; it is not amatter of personal preference but of duty—aduty he owes his Lodge, for nothing is moredetrimental to the welfare of a Lodge thanslovenly ritualistic work.

It is important that the District Deputyshould have a Convention begin on time.

Grand Honors should be given to aGrand Lecturer at the time he is introduced.He, and any other Grand Lodge officerpresent, should be addressed always byproper title.

If an Assistant Grand Lecturerconducts a Convention, he should receive thesame courtesies as a Grand Lecturer exceptGrand Honors, unless he bears the title ofRight Worshipful, in which case the DistrictDeputy Grand Master may accord himGrand Honors or not, as he chooses.

The duties and powers of the GrandLecturer are set forth in the Grand LodgeConstitutions as follows:

“The Grand Lecturer shall be aMaster or Past Master of Masonic skill andlearning, and shall have power to appoint oneor more competent assistants in eachMasonic District subject to the approval ofthe Grand Master.

“It shall be the duty of the GrandLecturer and his assistants to impart theStandard Work and Lectures approved by

Grand Lodge to the Lodges or Brethren inthis Jurisdiction, in such manner as theGrand Lodge may prescribe, and to holdannual Conventions for the exemplificationof the Standard Work in all of the MasonicDistricts in the State.”

Grand LodgeGrand Lodge is the great source of

power in the Craft. It has legislative,administrative and executive Jurisdictionover all matters pertaining to the Fraternity.Our Masonic traditions are in its keeping. Itis only right that our respect for its officersbe shown by adhering to certain rules ofetiquette necessary to maintain that respect,and this etiquette must be punctiliouslyobserved. Grand Honors and the Sign ofFidelity are symbols of that honor andrespect.

The Rules of Order found in theGrand Lodge Constitutions have for one oftheir principal purposes the maintenance ofproper decorum in Grand Lodge sessions.They specify certain rules of conduct laiddown and to be followed by all present at aGrand Lodge Communication. Talking,promiscuous moving about the room, failureto address the Grand Master when speaking,are all violations of common courtesy andgentlemanly conduct. In an assemblagenumbering over one thousand it is essentialthat these rules be strictly adhered to in orderthat business coming before Grand Lodge bedispatched with celerity and at the same timein a dignified manner. These rules ofdecorum are applicable to Lodges as well asGrand Lodge.

Grand Lodge OfficersRules for receiving all Grand Lodge

officers are substantially the same except inthe case of the Grand Master, the DeputyGrand Master, or the District Deputy GrandMaster. (See under “District Deputy GrandMaster”.)

When representing the Grand Masterin his District, the DDGM should always beannounced by the Tiler to the Junior Deacon

and by the Junior Deacon to the WorshipfulMaster as “about to enter.” (See section on“District Deputy Grand Master”.)

A District Deputy Grand Mastershould be announced by the Tiler and JuniorDeacon thus:

“The Right Worshipful __________ ,District Deputy Grand Master of the___________ , District, representing TheMost Worshipful ___________ , GrandMaster of Masons in the State of New York,is about to enter.”

Announcing the Grand Master shouldbe done by the Grand Marshal in the East inthe following language:

“Brethren, The Most Worshipful___________ , Grand Master of Masons inthe State of New York, is about to enter.”

The principle underlying these formsis that neither the Grand Master, the DeputyGrand Master, nor the DDGM in the absenceof either, hold the status of an ordinaryvisitor who must request admittance.Moreover, they stand in an officialrelationship to a Lodge that empowers themto enter it and to preside over it on anyoccasion when duty requires them to do so.

On the visit of the Grand Master orDeputy Grand Master to a Lodge, the GrandMarshal, Deputy Grand Marshal, or aBrother acting as such, is announced by theJunior Deacon to the Master as “The GrandMarshal (or Deputy, or Acting GrandMarshal) of The Grand Lodge of Free andAccepted Masons of The State of NewYork.” The Grand Marshal enters (outerDoor remains open), salutes West of theAltar and proceeds to the East where heraises the Lodge and announces the GrandMaster, as described above. He returns to theouter door without saluting, as he does notleave the Lodge room, and escorts the GrandMaster West of the Altar. The Grand Mastersalutes the Worshipful Master, andimmediately proceeds to the East, withoutverbal greeting by the Worshipful Master.And having arrived there, the Grand Marshalimmediately introduces the Grand Master in

the words above used and leads GrandHonors (the Worshipful Master does not leadhere; see under “Grand Honors”) then handsthe gavel to the Grand Master, who may seatthe Brethren and return the gavel to theWorshipful Master, after which theWorshipful Master personally greets andwelcomes the Grand Master to the Lodge.The order of business from then on isconducted according to the pleasure of theGrand Master, to whom every courtesyshould be shown.

This same procedure holds for thereception of the Deputy Grand Master in theabsence of the Grand Master. TheWorshipful Master should receive anyvisitor, official or otherwise, from the East,and should never step down from his rostrumto greet him.

The Master must at once uncover asthe District Deputy Grand Master enters theLodge, call up the Lodge with three strokesof the gavel, and remain uncovered until heleaves the room, except during the conferralof degrees. (The Grand Marshal or DeputyGrand Marshal raise the Lodge andannounce the entrance of the Grand Masteror Deputy Grand Master.)

When receiving Past Grand Mastersor Elected Grand Line Officers, theWorshipful Master will raise the Lodgebefore their entrance. When any other currentGrand Lodge Officer visits a Lodge, he isinvited to enter. He salutes at the Altar andwithout greeting there, proceeds to the Eastwhere the Worshipful Master raises theLodge, makes the introduction, leads in thegiving of Grand Honors and greets thevisitor. No applause should be given after theGrand Honors have been completed. For PastGrand Lodge Officers in delegations in suchnumbers as to crowd the East, they may begreeted West of the Altar and given GrandHonors while there, followed by theinstruction to their conductor to “please seattheir Brethren as near the East as possible.”

Grand MarshalThe Grand Marshal—there is also a

Deputy Grand Marshal, who acts in event ofhis absence and assists in event of hispresence—is the majordomo of GrandLodge. During Grand LodgeCommunications, he conducts the processionof Grand Lodge Officers into and out of theGrand Lodge room, leads in giving GrandHonors, and makes certain announcements.He has similar duties at special ceremonials,as cornerstone layings, dedications, etc.

When the Grand Master, in person, orthrough a Deputy, consents to conduct acornerstone laying, dedication, joins acontingent of Masons in a parade, etc., for aLodge, District or Masonic-relatedorganization, the ceremony or program, fromthe moment of his consent, becomes a GrandLodge activity, and is under the control ofGrand Lodge; therefore all mattersappertaining to the functions of a Marshal,arrangement of processions, ordering andarrangement according to precedence, givingof Grand Honors, and all similar details andarrangements are exclusively in the GrandMarshal's care, and should be left to him orarranged according to his instructions. It iscommon courtesy to send the Grand Marshala copy of all invitations to the Grand Master.Copies of proposed programs and completedvisit information form must be sent to theGrand Marshal for his approval.

Grand MasterSee under “Grand Lodge Officers.”

JewelsAccording to the Grand Lodge

Constitutions the “jewels of the officers ofLodges shall be of silver or white metal.”Gold is reserved for Grand Lodge jewels andshould not be used by the constituent Lodges.Occasionally one sees Lodge jewels, partsilver and part gold even on staves—but thisis incorrect. Cases have been observed ofLodges accepting and using solid gold jewelsas a present from some outside organization;

this is improper in principle as well as aviolation of Masonic Law. See the Book ofConstitutions.

The jewels of Grand Lodge officersare gold or the color of gold (yellow, notwhite) and should always be worn at GrandLodge functions.

Officers' jewels are a part of theofficial and necessary insignia of office, andare bestowed as such at the time ofinstallation and should always be worn andrespected as such, never as personal orprivate adornment. In case of questionsconcerning design, dimensions, etc., ofAprons and jewels, standards will befurnished on application to the LodgeSupplies of Grand Lodge.

MarshalThe duty of the Marshal of a Lodge is

clearly set forth in the Standard Monitor, inhis installation ceremony. “It is your duty tohave charge of and conduct the processionsof the Lodge, and to assist the Senior Deaconwhenever that officer may require yourservices. On all such occasions the goodorder that may be displayed mainly dependsupon your zeal, knowledge, and discretion.”

A Marshal who understands thefloorwork and the conducting of processionswill greatly enhance the dignity, orderliness,and beauty of processions in the Lodge room.

Directions by the Marshal may begiven by voice (moderate tones, not loudmilitant commands) or movements of hisbaton.

Masters of CeremonyThe duties and functions of Masters of

Ceremony are stated in the StandardMonitor.

“Installing Officer—My Brothers, youhave been appointed Masters of Ceremony ofthis Lodge, and will now be invested with thebadge of your office. You, as proxies for theSenior Deacon, are to see that candidates forthe several Degrees are duly and truly

prepared. In the Preparation Room you are topermit no levity, but are expected to conductyour work therein so as to leave animpression on the minds of those seekingMasonic Light, that our institution isdignified and refined, and that its ceremonieshave in reality symbolic meaning.”

For sake of correct usage in titles weshould observe the following: In GrandLodge are officers on the Grand Master'sstaff known as “Grand Directors ofCeremonies.” In the Lodge, however, it is“Senior Master of Ceremony,” “JuniorMaster of Ceremony,” “Senior and JuniorMasters of Ceremony.”

In the Installation of Lodge Officers,“Stewards” are installed—not “Senior andJunior Stewards.” These two officers shouldbe known simply as “Stewards.” Neitheroutranks the other.

Master's HatWe have no written law requiring that

a Worshipful Master shall remain covered atall times but to wear a hat is so old a custom,is so generally recognized as a symbol of hisoffice, and is so integrally a part of thesystem of Masonic symbolism as a whole, itis fitting that he do so. The hat is an emblemof the Master's authority, a distinguishingmark of the importance of his office, a visibleand conspicuous sign of his position aspresiding officer and titular head of theLodge. Being such, it is not a personalproperty of the Master as a privateindividual, but belongs to the Lodge, like hisApron or jewel, and it is this fact that shoulddetermine his use of it.

The hat should always be removedduring prayer as a sign of respect to theSovereign Grand Architect of the Universe. Itshould be removed when giving theobligations as a token of their solemnity. If aMasonic Memorial Service is held in churchor cemetery chapel, it should be removed as asign of reverence. In Grand LodgeCommunications, of course, only the GrandMaster remains covered.

The kind of hat a Master should wearis determined by good taste. A cap or a strawhat is always inappropriate. With fullevening wear, only a silk hat should be used;it is also better to wear silk when attired intuxedo though in many circumstances ablack derby or homburg is in good taste. Theonly governing principle, as said above isgood taste, and, in deference to that, aMaster will never wish to wear any style ofhat that will attract attention out of oddity orwill derogate from the dignity of his office.

Memorial ServiceAt a Masonic service for a deceased

Brother, including the procession to thecemetery and the rites of interment, therequirements of Masonic etiquette areunusually strict. In the procession, the samedecorum should be observed as in the Lodgeroom; no smoking, no laughter, no loudtalking, and Brethren should neither join norleave the lines without permission from theWorshipful Master. The general directionsfor the proper observance of theseceremonies are found in the StandardMonitor; they are the code of etiquetteproper to the occasion and should be strictlyobserved.

At the death of a Brother, theWorshipful Master may order the Lodge tobe in mourning for a period of thirty days.During this time the Altar should be coveredwith a suitable cloth of black crepe on top ofwhich the Bible is placed. A small band ofblack crepe is to be tied to the head of eachstaff, to each of the three gavels, and to theMarshal's baton.

Not all Masters are gifted in the art ofpublic speech. It is an art not easily acquired.To read or to recite well requires time,patience, thought and practice. Therefore, theMaster not so gifted would do well to choosefrom among his Brethren an officiant capableof rendering the printed Masonic Service in amanner which will be a source of comfort tothose bereaved. If rendered in such a manner,the Masonic Service is impressive.

Every Master should read carefullythe printed directions just before the Servicein the Standard Monitor. This ceremony isof great importance and there is no need toelaborate on it other than to point out thatMasonic Services are the most commonmethod of presenting ourselves to the public.A good impression is mandatory; and thatgood impression has been known to attractnew members.

You will observe that the Monitorcalls for a white Apron, which means thatOfficers' Aprons and jewels are not to beworn at the public Masonic Service, nor isGrand Lodge regalia in order. This includesPresent and Past Grand Lodge officers,Present and Past Masters of Lodges, who areto be clothed in white gloves and Aprons, thesame as all Brethren. For this is not anoccasion that calls for any parading of rank.We are engaged in the simple and dignifiedceremony of burying our dead, and the whiteApron worn by all is simply a symbol of thatequality of rank within the Craft.

In the event of the deceased being amilitary man, the following rule is to beobserved: the Apron is to be placed on top ofthe coffin and the Flag draped over both thecoffin and the Apron.

The white Apron is to be laid upon thecoffin, not tied upon the body. The Apron isa symbol of life and work and is not to betied upon that which is lifeless. One sprig ofAcacia should be deposited upon (not in) thecoffin by the officiant.

The Masonic Service should be givenwith dignity and expression to bring out themeaning. In this Service are many wordsdifficult to pronounce and many phrases noteasily rendered. This requires thought, careand study on the part of the person who is torender the Service, in order to bring out thewarmth and comfort for those bereaved.

OfficeAn office in Lodge or Grand Lodge

exists quite independently of the Brother whomay at any given moment chance to occupyit. Its duties and functions are permanentlyestablished, defined and regulated by law,and are not to be changed. No office is theprivate property of the man who holds it; itbelongs, not to him, but to the Craft. Theoffice is not to conform to him; he is toconform to it. Nor are the dignity anddecorum that accompany any Masonic officeto be neglected.

Order in Lodge RoomBy order in Lodge is meant that all

members present behave in a seemly manner:the discussion and conduct of business iscarried on according to the laws of GrandLodge and the By-laws of the Lodge;ceremonies are conducted in due form; all thesigns and gestures of courtesy and respectare given; no loud talking, jesting, orunnecessary moving about is permitted, andharmony and dignity prevail. Theresponsibility for maintaining order restswith the Worshipful Master.

Past Grand MasterA Past Grand Master should be

received in the same manner as any otherGrand Lodge officer when he visits a Lodge;but whereas it is not always necessary toinvite Past Grand Lodge officers to the East,no exception should ever be made in his case;he should invariably be given a place ofhonor near the Master, and Grand Honorsshould be given. If a Past Grand Mastervisits a Lodge, he should be received beforethe Grand Master and Deputy Grand Master,(or District Deputy Grand Master in theabsence of either of the former when in aLodge of his own District). (See under“Grand Honors”, and “Visitor Protocol”.)

PrayerReligion is an essence, not an accident,

of Masonry. It stands at the heart of theFraternity, as the Altar, a symbol of the faith,stands at the center of the Lodge room. TheMaster should call upon the Chaplain toperform his office and the Chaplain himselfshould perform it with deliberateness,earnestness and sincerity, and in a dignifiedmanner expressive of the genuinely religiouscharacter of the Craft. The WorshipfulMaster should not consult memoranda duringprayer; the Secretary should discontinue hiswork; all should rise, be at the Sign ofFidelity and keep absolute silence while it isbeing given. The prayers should be in wordsprescribed by the Ritual. Prayers should forthe most part be given at the Altar. No Lodgeshould be closed without a prayer. (See alsounder “Chaplain.”)

Preparation RoomA wise Worshipful Master will use

every possible precaution to see that goodtaste, courtesy, and thoughtful kindness aredisplayed to the utmost in the PreparationRoom where all degrees begin. Here acandidate receives his earliest first-handimpressions of the Craft; he comes a totalstranger to all the practices and requirementsof the Lodge, and often is nervous,apprehensive, ill at ease, not knowing what toexpect, and fearful lest he cut for himself asorry figure in whatever may follow. Thebest way to teach him in this time ofbeginning that the Lodge is worthy ofrespect, is for the Lodge to show respect tohim. Clothing him in ritualistic garb shouldbe done with tact, by Brethren of consideratespirit who realize that entrance into Masonryis no mere formality but a serious and fatefulexperience. Ritualistic garb should be kept ingood condition and freshly laundered. Whenhe is led through the Inner Door the Lodgeshould be a place of quietness, each officer athis station or place designated by the ritual,ready and alert to perform his part lest theimpression be conveyed that initiation is ahastily improvised ceremony.

The Inner Door the one leading fromthe Preparation Room into the Lodge room—should never be opened except for thepurpose of admitting or returning candidates.Any other door, or doors, leading into thePreparation Room or to some place otherthan the Lodge room, should be kept lockedduring the preparation of candidates.Candidates are prepared by the Masters ofCeremony and no one else should ever bepresent with them except when the Secretaryenters during the First Degree, or the SeniorDeacon, the Master or someone delegated byhim appears. Ask the Grand Lecturer aboutthis during a Convention.

The Senior Deacon is responsible bothfor the physical condition and for thedecorum of the Preparation Room. TheMasters of Ceremony are told during theirinstallation that they are to act as the proxiesfor the Senior Deacon in the preparation ofCandidates. This makes the Senior Deaconresponsible for the accuracy of their workand the atmosphere of the Preparation Room.By a proper attitude toward the candidate inthe Preparation Room his respect for theInstitution may be tremendously increased orit may be shattered for all time by animproper attitude and a lack of respect forhis feelings.

In the Preparation Room care shouldbe taken to prepare the mind of the candidatefor that which is to follow. The ritualisticgarb of the work is but a symbol, whereforeit is important that the atmosphere of theroom be such as to inspire in the mind of thecandidate a respect for that which is to come.A “Chamber of Reflection” formed byturning off the lights in the PreparationRoom with but the illumination of a candleor candle flashlight is done by many Lodges,not to scare the candidate, but to add to thedignity and solemnity of the occasion.

Presents to CandidatesThe custom of making presents to

candidates at the end of some degree is un-Masonic except when they are given to allthe candidates. M∴W∴John A. Dutton,

when Grand Master, raised and discussedthis question in a complete and luminousmanner:

“We teach equality in Masonry. Ifthere are five men receiving a Degree, andsome are given presents and the others arenot, instead of imparting a sense of equality,we create a sense of inequality. Thecandidate may not feel that it is the fault ofthe Lodge, but it is humiliating for him tostand with others who are receiving presentswhile he receives nothing.”

Protocol(See “Visitors Protocol”)

PublicityThe names of petitioners or candidates

may not be disseminated to non-Masonsbecause of the possibility of rejection ofpetitioners, or acceptance or rejection ofcandidates for further advancement. Theirnames may be publicized after conferral ofthe Third Degree.

Photographs of Degree work areforbidden, but there is no restriction againstpublishing the names of those that willparticipate, or have participated, in a Degreeconferral.

Lodges and Districts are encouragedto publicize events that are open to the publicand to include in such publicity a briefexplanation of the general nature ofFreemasonry. The latter should be approvedby Grand Lodge to preclude dissemination ofmisinformation about the Craft.

PunctualityThe Worshipful Master is charged

with the responsibility to insist that hisofficers be on time. He should insist that hisofficers notify him in advance if they expectto be tardy or absent in order that he maymake provision to have their places filled. Ifhe opens his Lodge at the time prescribed bythe By-laws and when the constitutionallyrequired number of officers and members are

present, and make a practice of doing so, hismembers will form the habit of being ontime.

Concerning the Worshipful Master'sauthority and duty to open his Lodge on time,the Third Duty given in The StandardMonitor, under the subject: “Duties of theWorshipful Master,” says: “To open hisLodge at the time specified in the By-lawsand close it at a suitable hour.” TheWorshipful Master should conduct thebusiness of the Lodge with dispatch andeliminate lengthy intermissions.

RitualMirth has no place in the

exemplification of any of the Degrees ofMasonry. The prominence of the Letter G inthe East, the Altar and Holy Bible in theritualistic work preclude any words oractions which might evoke laughter.

To break into applause because aritualist has performed some part welldestroys the illusion and reduces the Ritual tothe level of a play; nor should applause begiven when a candidate has been raised. ABrother does not take a part in his own nameor perform it in his own proper person; hisindividuality should be sunk out of sight,both to himself and to his Lodge, lest heintrude himself between the candidate and theRitual.

The Brother raised has done nothing tomerit applause. Offering himself as acandidate to Masonry is done of his own freewill and accord. If we wish to express ourpleasure, congratulate him by a handclaspwhen the Lodge is called to refreshment.

The Ritual is designated to be effectivein the inner life of the candidate, a genuinemoral and spiritual experience by which heenters a new kind of life wherein he willstand obligated to perform duties and makeself-sacrifices; the obligations he will takewill be legally binding on him, and his vowsmust be genuine or he will be led intoharmful hypocrisy. On any otherinterpretation of it the Ritual degenerates into

play, into an empty ceremony, self-falsifiedand without meaning, and the whole structureof Freemasonry is shattered. A Lodge thatholds fast to this truth will no more permitlevity to ruin the effect of its work than itwould permit its Treasurer to falsify a check.

The Third Degree, especially, is of thehighest possible seriousness, not a drama, nota play, but a genuine spiritual experience. IfDegree Teams wear costumes, they should bein good taste, correct and accuratelyhistorical and not obviously for stage effect.

It is improper to discuss the Ritual inpublic, or to advertise it, or to publishpictures of it, in anyway by which the secretsof Masonry may be unlawfully revealed tothe profane world (ref. The Constitutions).

Sign of FidelityA comprehensive explanation of the

use of this sign, especially as used duringdegrees, can best be obtained by attendingthe Grand Lecturer's Convention. The signshould not be given, unless clothed as aMason (with Apron). Some guidelinesfollow:

1. The Sign of Fidelity should alwaysbe given by an officer of a Lodge whenaddressing or being addressed by any officerof higher rank, either in the Ritual or duringthe transaction of any business of the Lodge.

2. Every Brother in the Lodge mustbe on his feet and at the Sign of Fidelitywhenever the Lodge is at prayer; wheneverthe Senior Deacon attends at the Altar; andwhenever the Brethren form the SymbolicLodge during an Obligation, they must, withthe exception of the Worshipful Master,Masters of Ceremony, Stewards, Organistand candidates, be at the Sign.

3. In the Second Section of theSecond Degree occurs a place where allBrethren of the Lodge must be at the Sign,but this also must be left for explanation bythe Grand Lecturer's Convention.

4. The Sign should not be given whena class of candidates enters the Lodge in any

Degree; nor when a Worshipful Master or aGrand Lodge officer enters the room, exceptthat when the Grand Master or DeputyGrand Master enter all come to the Sign ofFidelity and remain at the Sign until GrandHonors are given.

5. The Sign of Fidelity is given onfour notable public occasions—at aMemorial Service, at the Laying of aCornerstone, at the Dedication of a Lodgebuilding, and at Public Installations. Thewearing of Masonic Aprons designates whenthe Sign should be given.

6. Do not come to the Sign of Fidelityduring the invocation at a banquet table. Thesign is not given if an Apron is not worn.

7. The Sign of Fidelity is to be givenin the Lodge during the Pledge of Allegianceto the Flag of our Country and the singing ofthe National Anthem.

SignsSigns belong to the inner essence and

esoteric life of the Craft; accordingly theyshould always be given with careful accuracyand with full decorum. Under nocircumstances should the Master, Wardensor any Brother remain seated while giving aSign. As a matter of courtesy, the Mastershould rise and return the salute of a Brotherentering the Lodge. Brethren who pass fromone side of the Lodge room to the other sideshould not, on passing the Altar, give theDueguard and Sign of the Degree on whichthe Lodge is open.

SpeakersAn invited speaker is a guest of the

Lodge. He should not be permitted to enterwithout escort or to find his own seat. At thetime he is introduced, he should be in theEast, at the Master's right, and in introducinghim the Master should give his name clearly,address him by title, name his home Lodge,give such other information about him as willenable the hearer to identify him, andannounce his subject plainly so that all canhear; also clearly explain the occasion that

called for him in order to give his address itsnecessary background. At the time of theintroduction the Lodge will be quiet, withouttalking or moving about, and the Secretarywill not continue writing or rattling papersduring the address. A proper introduction ishalf the speaker's battle and, especially if hehas come from a distance and without fee, isa courtesy to which he is entitled.

In engaging a speaker, the Mastershould take care to give him all necessaryinstructions; under what circumstances he isto speak, on what subject, for how long, forwhat purpose, and whether or not he shoulddress formally. If he is paid a fee, thepayment should be made the same night; if afee is not paid, strict care should be takenpromptly to reimburse him for his expenses.After he has come and gone, the Lodge, orthe Master in its name, should write him aletter of appreciation.

Speakers usually are busy men; if theygive of their own time and energy,particularly when visiting a strange Lodge ora Lodge at a distance, it is the mostelementary of courtesies to extend them everyhospitality and to see that they are put to noexpense. If a fee is paid, a full understandingas to its amount should be had beforehand.

One of the essentials of hospitality to avisiting speaker is to see that he can beginstrictly on time, a courtesy he will wish torepay by concluding on time. .

TitlesThe titles belonging to all Grand

Lodge officers are described in TheConstitutions, as follows:

The title of the Grand Master shall be“Most Worshipful.” The remaining GrandOfficers, including the Commissioners ofAppeals, the Trustees of the Masonic Halland Asylum Fund, Masonic MedicalResearch Laboratory Board and Directors,

and Trustees of the Livingston Library shallbe “Right Worshipful."

The title of a Master or a Past Masteris “Worshipful”, of a Grand Representativeis “Right Worshipful”; of an Assistant GrandLecturer is “Very Worshipful." A Lodge orGrand Lodge officer on any Masonicoccasion should be addressed or referred toby his title. Never address a WorshipfulMaster as “Worshipful Sir,” but as“Worshipful Master.” Also, the words are“Brethren” or “Brothers” (no such words as“Brothern” or “Brethern”). Wives andwidows are our “Sisters” (and thereobviously should be no such reference tothem as “Sistern”.)

Visiting MastersVisiting Masters and Past Masters are

usually paid the honor of a welcome byname, with their proper title of “Worshipful”(unless they hold the title of “RightWorshipful”) and the Master may invite themto a seat in the East if he wishes. The factthat they come as representing a Lodge,rather than in any private capacity, entitlesthem to courtesies and respect one regularLodge owes another. They should not beinvited to the East when it is occupied by anyelective Grand Lodge Line Officers, theDistrict Deputy Grand Master, or the StaffOfficer.

Visiting “Teams”If a Degree “Team” visits another

Lodge to confer a Degree, its relationship tothe Lodge it visits is as guest to host, and theLodge should therefore be careful to avoidany kind of unseemly conduct on the part ofany of its members. And, of equalimportance, ascertain in advance that it willnot introduce into its work any feature notacceptable to the host Lodge or to itsWorshipful Master. This is one reason whythere should be used only the Ritual as GrandLodge prescribes it.

VisitorsVisitors should be treated with

courtesy. If circumstances are such that theMaster decides no visitors are to be present,or if he believes that a visitor might disturbthe peace and harmony of the Lodge, thevisitor(s) must be informed, with great tactand diplomacy, that visitors will not beadmitted.

If an Examining Committee isappointed to meet with a visitor, it shoulddeal with him in a kindly and consideratemanner. Catch questions, attempts to triphim up by trickery, or any attempt of theCommittee to “show off” its own knowledgein order to humiliate the visitor, are un-Masonic in spirit. The only duty of aCommittee is to assure itself that the strangeris a Master Mason in good standing in someregular Lodge; for it to go beyond this is toexceed its authority.

After introducing the visitor to theWorshipful Master the Committee shouldassist the Senior Deacon to find him a seatand, when opportunity offers, to introducehim to the Lodge members, and otherwisemake him feel at home.

Delegations of Brethren sometimesvisit neighboring Lodges. It is a fine customon these occasions, practiced in many of ourLodges, for the Masters to call up the Lodgeas the delegation enters, necessarily so ifMasters, Past Masters or Grand Lodgeofficers are in the delegation.

The Grand Lodge law governingvisitors is found in The Constitutions: “Novisitor from this jurisdiction shall beadmitted into any Lodge without due inquiryand satisfaction as to his good Masonicstanding; nor shall he be admitted or bepermitted to remain therein if his presence

will disturb the harmony of the Lodge orembarrass its work. The names of visitors toLodges must be announced in open Lodge,and either there vouched for, or, beforeexamination, a certificate of the visitor'sstanding in a Lodge warranted by the GrandLodge must be presented.

“Any visitor from another Jurisdiction,unless personally known, applying forexamination for admission to a Lodge in thisJurisdiction shall be required to present acertificate of his membership in the Lodgefrom which he hails. Such certificate shall beauthenticated as follows:

1. By the Grand Secretary of theGrand Lodge in which such Lodge is located,as to the regular standing of the Lodge.

2. By the Secretary of the Lodge as tothe Masonic standing of the Brother; and

3. By the signature of the Brother inwhose name the certificate is issued, forpersonal identification.

A Brother has the right to see theCharter of the Lodge he is visiting if he sodesires. A Tiler's attitude toward visitorsshould be courteous. All decisionsconcerning them should be made by theMaster or a Committee appointed by theMaster, and a Tiler should carry out thisdecision with tact and without questioning itor commenting on it.

Visitor ProtocolThere is a well-defined system of

etiquette for the reception of present or pastGrand Lodge officers by a Lodge or at otherMasonic functions. This system for the orderof their reception may be found in the mostcurrent copy of the Masonic Protocolpublished and updated as needed by theGrand Marshal.
