Career Paths in Applied Mathematics

• Career Path 1 – Business Education Requirements: At least a Bachelor of Science

degree, but may also require Master of Science degree depending on the position and organization.

Experience Requirements: Most entry-level positions require that you have worked in at least one internship before they will hire you full-time. Several years in one internship, or two to three different internships in business make you a stronger candidate.

Types of Employers: Consulting firms like Daniel Wagner Associates and McKinsey and Company; Aerospace and transportation equipment manufacturers like Boeing, General Motors, Aerospace Corporation, Ford, and United Technologies; Financial services firms like Citibank, Morgan Stanley, and Prudential.

Average Starting Salary: $47,739+

• Career Path 2 – Industry Education Requirements: At least a Bachelor of Science, but

may require a Master of Science in upper level positions and at certain organizations

Experience Requirements: Internships are usually preferred for entry-level candidates.

Places of Employment: Communications services providers like AT&T or Verizon; chemical or pharmaceutical manufacturers like Kodak, DuPont, GlaxoSmithKline, and Merck & Co., Inc.; producers of petroleum and petroleum products like Amoco and Exxon Research and Engineering; electronics and computer manufacturers like IBM, SGI, Philips Research, Honeywell, Motorola, and Lucent Technologies; engineering research organizations like AT&T Laboratories-Research, Telcordia Technologies, Exxon Research and Engineering, Schlumberger-Doll Research, and NEC Laboratories America, Inc.; computer service and software firms like MSC.Software Corporation, The Mathworks, Palo Alto Research Center, Mentor Graphics, Adobe, and Microsoft.

Average Starting Salary: $40,000+

Science, but may require a higher level of education as you move up or for certain sectors.

Experience Required: Internships! Places of Employment: Government labs like Oak Ridge

National Lab, Sandia, Pacific Northwest National Labs, and Los Alamos; and agencies like the National Security Agency, the Center for Communications Research, the Supercomputing Research Center, the Institute for Defense Analysis Center, and NASA's Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering.

• Career Path 4 – Education Education Requirements: If a Bachelor of Science in

Mathematics is obtained, typically teaching jobs require a Master of Arts in Teaching and/or a Ph.D. depending on the level you want to teach.

Experience Requirements: Student teaching is often a requirement to receive licensing.

Places of Employment: High Schools, Colleges, Universities, University-based research organizations like the Institute for Mathematics, the Institute for Advanced Study, and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute.
