When we talk about simple past, we must know that in Past tense exists two different kinds of verbs:A.- REGULAR VERBS: These form their past tense by adding -ED. Here comes a problem because the final ed in past tense of regular verbs takes three different pronunciation. Look at this:

1.- When ED is added to a verb ending in T or D, the final ED is pronounced /ID/. Examples:

NEED

=NEEDED /ID/

TASTE=TASTED /ID/

DECIDE=DECIDED /ID/

CROWD=CROWDED/ID/

NOTE

=NOTED /ID/

2.- When -ED is added to a verb ending in an unvoiced consonant /p,k,sh,ch,f,s/, the final ED is pronounced /T/. Examples:

PICK

=PICKED /T/

JUMP

=JUMPED /T/

TALK

=TALKED /T/

HOPE

=HOPED /T/

RUSH

=RUSHED/T/

LAUGH=LAUGHED /T/

COUGH=COUGHED/T/

3.- When ED is added to a verb ending in a voiced consonant/b,g,v,th,j,m,n,

l,r,z/ or a vowel sound , the final ED is pronounced /D/. Examples:

PULL

=

PULLED /D/

PLAY

=

PLAYED /D/

LIVE

=

LIVED /D/

KILL

=

KILLED /D/

TURN

TURNED /D/

STUDY=

SPELLING RULES:

1.- If a verb ends in E, omit it and add D. Examples:

CHANGE=CHANGED

CLOSE=CLOSED

2.- If the verb ends in Y preceded by a consonant, change the Y to I and and ED. Examples:

STUDY= STUDIED

MARRY= MARRIED

FRY

=FRIED

TRY

= TRIED

3.- If the verb ends in Y preceded by a vowel, keep the Y and add ED.

Examples:

PLAY

=PLAYED

STAY

=STAYED

4.- If a single final consonant follows a single stressed vowel, double the final consonant before adding ED. Examples:

PLAN

=PLANNED

ADMIT=ADMITTED
