Participants of the quiz were trained on the Plumbing Codes published by IPA and IAPMO. The prizes of winners were also declared beforehand. To help market and promote the idea, a logo for Pune Plumbing League was made and brochures printed. We received a huge response and we decided to gather 30 teams of two participants each. Manufacturers in the plumbing industry were approached and explained the idea of the quiz. Printed brochure with a mail explaining the benefits and the timeline of the quiz were also given. Sponsorship amount of each manufacturer was fixed at Rs. 50,000. In return, they would be given opportunity to give a technical presentation to an audience of almost 70 personnel from well known developers of Pune city. This piqued their interest, and we were successful in gathering 31 sponsors and a title sponsor. The next step was to gather the par- ticipants. IPA PC members used their contacts and started assembling the participant teams. At the end of two months, we successfully arranged 36 teams. Each participant was to In March 2015 a team of 16 IPA members from Pune visited the ISH world fair in Germany. Apart from the fair, the team visited a project site, a consultant’s office and one contractor’s office. Impressed by the work culture and technology used, the members realized that it was necessary to implement, and also impart this knowl- edge to plumbing professionals back home. During the visit, the IPA Pune team also held an internal meeting to discuss the Annual Chapter plans. The main agenda for the next year was to impart the newly gained knowledge from Germany to plumbing professionals, and thus improve the plumbing systems in India. It was in this meeting that the idea of a training pro- gram and a quiz program was discussed and born. No one believed that what started as a casual discussion in a meeting during the Germany / ISH visit, would actually see the light of a day and culminate in a grand finale. When we returned to India, we brain- stormed on having an event for the Pune Chapter. We wanted it to be innovative as well as informative. Having previously organized events and training programs for students, this time we decided to organize one for working professionals. And what better way to educate them than to pit them against each other in healthy competition?! Hence, among all the ideas discussed, the idea of a Quiz contest was finalized. We decided to brand this quiz as ‘Pune Plumbing League.’ The idea was initially discussed among a few people, but as soon as others started showing interest, we started working on a full fledged event. Discussions were held on the modus operandi of the quiz which was a new concept. The idea was to gather all the plumbing consultants, developers, engineers and manufacturers on a common platform. The event was attended by many well known plumbing consultants, contractors, architects and developers of Pune. IPA Technical Committee was also present on the day of the event. Mr. Salil Karkhanis, Vice Chairman of IPA PC and the convener of PPL gave a brief introduction of PPL. He informed about the training sessions, the sponsor presentations, the quiz rounds and how IPA PC members contributed in making PPL a success. Mr. Pravin Bora, IPA PC Chairman, gave the Chairman’s address and invited Mr. Subhash Deshpande to conduct the much awaited Final quiz round of PPL. Final quiz round was projected live to the audience. Four teams contesting were of: • Unique Engineers (Mr. Shahaji Dalvi and Mr. Navnath Kumbhar), sponsored by Conserve • Venkataramanan Associates (Mr. Amar- receive the Uniform Illustrated Plumb- ing Code – India (UIPC-I), the Water Efficient Products – India (WEP-I) and the Green Plumbing Code Supplement – India (GPCS-I). The quiz was mainly based on these three codes. In addition to these, `A Guide to Good Plumbing Practices’ was also distributed. Partici- pants were given intensive training on the Codes and other allied services like hot water pumps, STP, WTP, rain water harvesting, etc. They were also offered life time opportunity to interact with almost 30 manufacturers - all giants of the plumbing industry. All of these were given at a nominal participation fee of Rs. 10,000. With the enthusiastic response, PPL, as fondly called, started its training sessions in the campus of the College of Engineering, Pune. The participants were trained on UIPC-I and other codes and allied services. The first chairman of IPA Pune Chapter, Mr. Subhash Deshpande, conducted the trainings on Codes. Mr. Dinesh Shah, NEC member of IPA, gave a lecture on Hot Water Systems. Mr. Nilesh Gandhi, IPA Member and renowned consultant, gave a lecture on Rain Water Harvest- ing and Syphonic Drainage. Mr. Sanjay Javanjal, Secretary of IPA PC, gave a lecture on Water and STPs. Manufac- turers who sponsored the event, gave technical presentations on their prod- ucts and technologies. The participants took active interest in the extended training sessions. After the training sessions and the tech- nical presentations, the quiz program started. It was divided into six rounds, the Introductory Round, the Qualifying Round and Levels 1 to 4. audience. He also mentioned that Pune Chapter has been fortunate to have Mr. Subhash Deshpande, Mr. Vivek Khandekar and Mr. Nitish Phansalkar as its previous chairmen before Mr. Pravin Bora. He praised Mr. Bora for organizing this event successfully. He was delighted to see young generation interested in improving the plumbing standards in India. He concluded by saying that Pune Chapter, had set an example for other chapters.

Overwhelmed by the response received by the plumbing quiz, a few prominent architects from Pune expressed their

appreciation. They also expressed their wish to be a part of future IPA PC quiz events, and appealed to IPA PC to host a similar quiz for architects very soon.

Mr. Nilesh Mehta, Director TECE India, the title Sponsor of PPL, gave the sponsorial presentation. Mr. Ayetullah Akay, Area Manager International Busi-ness, addressed the gathering.

Mr. Sanjay Javanjal, Secretary IPA PC, proposed the vote of thanks. He thanked all sponsors, participants, Mr. Sarang Patil and Mr. Vijay Dhere.

A quiz for the audience was also conducted. Mr. Pravin Bora conducted this round, and those giving correct answers were given gifts. The evening also marked the signing the agreement for building a plumbing lab in C.V. Raman College of Engineering, Bhu-baneswar, similar to the one at Pune. It was signed by Mr. Sudhakaran Nair, President, IPA and Mr. Sanjiv Kumar Raut, Chairman, C.V. Raman College of Engineering.

Witnessing the overall success of Pune Plumbing League, Mr. Sharat Rao, Chairman – IPA MC and Mr. Gurmit Singh Arora, ex Chairman, IPAMC announced the proposal for Mumbai Plumbing League. Mr. Pravin Bora appealed to IPA NEB to get all chapters to have their own plumbing leagues and have a national contest in the name ‘Indian Plumbing League’.

Mr. Sudhakaran Nair’s ten year of presidency of IPA was commemorated. Mr. Sudhakaran Nair was first elected as President in Pune and it was an honor for the Pune Chapter to be able to celebrate this occasion. Mr. Pravin Bora felicitated Mr. Sudhakaran Nair.
