April 3, 2003Army Spc. Donald S. Oaks Jr., 20, of Harborcreek, Erie County, Pa., was killed in action in Iraq. He was assigned to C Battery, 3rd Battalion, 13th Field Artillery Regiment (Multiple Launch Rocket System), Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

April 4, 2003Army Capt. Tristan N. Aitken, 31, of State College, Pa., was killed in action near Baghdad’s international airport in Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.

April 5, 2003Army Sgt. Stevon Booker, 34, of Apollo, Armstrong County, Pa., was killed by enemy fire during a raid into Baghdad, Iraq. He was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 64th Armor regiment, Fort Stewart, Ga.

May 27, 2003Army Staff Sgt. Michael B. Quinn, 37, of Tampa, Florida, formerly of Herndon, Northumberland County, Pa., was killed in Al-Fallujah, Iraq. Quinn was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armor Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado.

May 30, 2003Army Spc. Michael T. Gleason, 25, of Warren, Pa., was killed in Mosul, Iraq, when the vehicle, he was traveling in swerved to avoid colliding with a civilian vehicle and turned over. He was assigned to the 519th Military Intelligence Battalion, Fort Bragg, N.C.

Army Spc. Zachariah W. Long, 20, of Milton, Pa., was killed in Mosul, Iraq when the vehicle he was traveling in swerved to avoid colliding with a civilian vehicle and turned over. He was assigned to the 519th Military Intelligence Battalion, Fort Bragg, N.C.

July 1, 2003Army 1st Sgt. Christopher Coffin, 51, of Kennebunk, Maine, was killed outside Baghdad, Iraq, when his vehicle ran into a ditch. It has been determined that his death was caused by the vehicle accident but the cause of the crash is being investigated. The Army reservist was married to Betsy Coffin, a native of Bethlehem. Coffin was buried July 8, 2003, which would have been his 52nd birthday. Services were held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Bethlehem. He was member of the Army Reserve, 352nd Civil Affairs Command. He was assigned to the 352nd Civil Affairs Battalion, Riverdale, Md. 

July 3, 2003Army Pfc. Corey L. Small, 20, East Berlin, Pa. died from a non-combat related cause in Baghdad, Iraq. He was assigned to the 502 Military Intelligence Company, 2 ACR, Fort Polk, La.

July 13, 2003Army Sgt. Jaror C. Puello-Coronado, 36, of Pocono Summit, Pa., died from injuries received when he was hit by a dump truck while manning a traffic point at Camp Edson, Iraq. He was assigned to the 310th Military Police Battalion, 800th Military Police in Uniondale, N.Y.

July 28, 2003Army Spc. William J. Maher III, 35, of Yardley, Pa., was killed in Baghdad, Iraq. Maher was in a convoy when he was injured by an improvised explosive device. Maher died of his injuries. He was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, based at Ray Barracks, Germany.

August 12, 2003Army Pfc. Timmy R. Brown, Jr., of Conway, Pa. was killed in Taji, Iraq, when his vehicle, which was part of a convoy, hit an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to D Company, 519th Military Intelligence Battalion, Fort Bragg, N.C.

August 17, 2003Army Spc. Craig S. Ivory, 26, of Port Matilda, Pa., died in Homberg University Hospital, Germany. Ivory was medically evacuated from Kuwait on August 12. He died of a non-combat related cause on August 17. Assigned to the 501st Forward Support Company, 173rd Airborne Brigade, Southern European Task Force, Vicenza, Italy.

Army Reserve Lt. Col. Anthony L. Sherman, 43, of Pottstown, Pa., died in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. Sherman died as a result of non-combat related injury. He was assigned to the 304th Civil Affairs Brigade, U.S. Army Reserves, based in Philadelphia, Pa.

August 18, 2003Army Spc. Eric R. Hull, 23, of Uniontown, Pa., was killed in Baghdad, Iraq when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device. August 27, 2003 Army Spc. Rafael L. Navea, 34, of Pittsburgh, Pa., was killed in Fallujah, Iraq. Navea was in a vehicle when an improvised explosive device struck his vehicle. Navea died of his injuries. Navea was assigned to C Battery, 2nd Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, based at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Assigned to C Battery, 2nd Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, based at Fort Sill, Okla.

September 18, 2003Army Capt. Brian R. Faunce, 28, of Philadelphia, Pa., died in Al Asad, Iraq. Faunce was moving in a Bradley fighting vehicle when his vehicle crossed under some low-laying power lines. The soldier reached up and grabbed the lines and was fatally injured. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, Fort Carson, Colo.

September 29, 2003 Army Sgt. Andrew Joseph Baddick, 26, of Jim Thorpe, Pa., died when he tried to rescue another soldier whose vehicle had entered a canal near Abu Ghraib Prison, Iraq and drowned. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Bragg, N.C.

Army Staff Sgt. Christopher E. Cutchall, 30, of McConnellsburg, Pa., was killed west of Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated as his vehicle passed by. He was assigned to Delta Troop, 4th Cavalry, Fort Riley, Kan.

October 1, 2003Army Spc. Tamarra J. Ramos, 24, of Quakertown, Pa., died of non-combat related injuries at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. While serving in Egypt in support of U.S. efforts in Iraq, she was diagnosed with cancer. She was assigned to the 3rd Armor Medical Company, Medical Troop Regimental Support Squadron; 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado.

October 13, 2003Army Spc. Douglas J. Weismantle, 28, of Pittsburgh, Pa., died in Baghdad, Iraq. Weismantle was driving a high mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle when an Iraqi dump truck swerved and rolled over on top of his vehicle. Weismantle was one of two soldiers killed in this incident. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne, Fort Bragg, N.C.

October 18, 2003Army First Lt. David Bernstein, 24, of Phoenixville, Pa. was killed in Taza, Iraq when enemy forces ambushed his patrol with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire. He was assigned to 1st Battalion (Airborne), 508th Infantry Regiment, 173rd Infantry Brigade, Camp Ederle, Italy.

November 1, 2003Army Spc. Maurice J. Johnson, 21, of Levittown, Pa. was killed in Mosul, Iraq. Johnson was riding in a high mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle when it was hit by an improvised explosive device. He died as a result as of his injuries. Johnson was assigned to C Company, 501st Signal battalion, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), based in Fort Campbell, Ky.

November 2, 2003Army Sgt. Ernest G. Bucklew 33, of Enon Valley, Pa., was one of 16 soldiers killed when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter was struck by a missile and crashed in Al Fallujah, Iraq. Bucklew was on his way home to attend the funeral of his mother, Mary Ellen Bucklew, 57. Bucklew was assigned to Support Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado.

November 9, 2003Army Reserve Sgt. Nicholas A. Tomko, 24, of Pittsburgh, Pa., was killed in Baghdad, Iraq. Tomko was the door gunner in a convoy vehicle when his team came under small arms attack. The soldier died of his injuries. Assigned to the 307th Military Police Company, U.S. Army Reserve, New Kensington, Pa.

November 13, 2003Army Sgt. Joseph Minucci II, 23, of Richeyville, Pa., was killed in Samara, Iraq. Minucci was riding on a bus when an improvised explosive device exploded. Minucci died of his injuries. He was assigned to C Company, 2nd Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, Camp Ederle, Italy.

November 15, 2003Army Sgt. Timothy L. Hayslett, 26, of Newville, Pa., died of injuries received when he was struck by an explosive while on patrol in Baghdad, Iraq. He was assigned to the Army’s 1st Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment of the 1st Armored Division, based in Friedberg, Germany.

December 14, 2003Army Staff Sgt. Kimberly A. Voelz, 27, of Carlisle, Pa., was killed in Iskandariyah, Iraq. Voelz was responding to an explosive ordnance disposal call when an improvised device detonated. She was assigned to 703rd Explosive Ordnance Detachment based in Fort Knox, Ky.

January 8, 2004Army Spc. Christopher A. Golby, 26, of Johnstown, Cambria County, Pa., was killed when the UH-60 Blackhawk medical evacuation helicopter he was aboard went down near Fallujah, Iraq. He was assigned to the 571st Medical Company (Air Ambulance) based in Fort Carson, Colo.

January 24, 2004Army Spc. William R. Sturges Jr., 24, Spring Church, Pa., was killed when a vehicle-based improvised explosive device detonated in Khalidiyah, Iraq. He was assigned to Company B, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry, Fort Hood, Texas.

March 9, 2004 Spc. Edward W. Brabazon, 20, of Bensalem, Pa., died from a non-hostile gunshot wound in Baghdad, Iraq. Brabazon was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C., and was on his second tour of duty in Iraq.

March 19, 2004Army Spc. Clint Richard Matthews, 31, of Bedford, Pa., died in Baji, Iraq, from injuries sustained when his Bradley Fighting Vehicle went over a 60-foot embankment and flipped over on March 17. He was assigned to the Army’s 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, from Schweinfurt, Germany.

March 20, 2004Army Spc. Matthew J, Sandri, 24, of Shamokin, died when his living area came under a rocket attack in Fallujah, Iraq. Sandri was a paratrooper and medic with the “White Devils” 3rd Brigade Combat Team. He was assigned to the 82nd Forward Support Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, based in Fort Bragg, N.C.

March 31, 2004Army Spc. Sean R. Mitchell, 24, of Youngsville, Pa., died in Habbaniyah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device hit his armored personnel carrier. He was assigned to the Army’s 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.

April 3, 2004Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Aric J. Barr, 22, of Allegheny, Pa., died from injuries received from enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.

April 9, 2004Army Spc. Jonathan R. Kephart, 21, of Oil City, Pa., died in Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries sustained when his patrol was ambushed near Baghdad on April 8. He was a assigned to the Army’s 230th Military Police Company, from Kaiserslautern, Germany.

April 17, 2004 Army Staff Sgt. Edward W. Carman, 27, of McKeesport, Pa., died in Baghdad, Iraq when the track of the tank he was in broke, the driver lost control and the tank rolled off the bridge. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 12th Armored Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

April 26, 2004 Army National Guard Sgt. Sherwood Baker, 30, of Plymouth, Luzerne County, killed by a large explosion while performing site security in Baghdad, Iraq. He was assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 103rd Armor Regiment, Army National Guard, Tamaqua area, Pa.

April 29, 2004Army Pfc. Martin W. Kondor, 20, of York, PA., died in Baqubah, Iraq, when an apparent improvised explosive device exploded near his vehicle. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Vilseck, Germany.

May 3, 2004Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Ronald E. Baum, 38, of Hollidaysburg, Pa., died due to hostile action in Al Anbar Providence, Iraq. He was assigned to 2nd Intelligence Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

May 5, 2004Army Pfc. Bradley G. Kritzer, 19, Of Irvona, Pa. died in Baghdad, Iraq when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 21st Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

May 16, 2004Army Spc. Carl F. Curran, 22, of Union City, Pa., was killed when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Karmah, Iraq. He was assigned to Battery C., 1st Battalion, 107th Filed Artillery Regiment, Army National Guard, Oil City, Pa.

May 21, 2004Army Staff Sgt. Jeremy R. Horton, 24, of Carneys Point, Pa., killed in action by an improvised explosive device near Iskandariyah, Iraq. He was ssigned to Company B, 2nd

Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.

May 30, 2004Army Pvt. Bradli N. Coleman, 19, of Ford City, Pa., died in Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries sustained on May 29 in Mosul, Iraq, when mortar rounds hit his living quarters. Coleman was assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.

May 30, 2004Army Capt. Robert C. Scheetz Jr., 31, a native of Shamokin Township Northumberland County, died in Musayyib, Iraq from injuries received from a bomb attack. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, Baumholder, Germany.

June 29, 2004Marine Corps Reserve Cpl. John H. Todd III, 24, of Bridgeport, Pa., died southeast of Baghdad, Iraq, as a result of hostile action. He was assigned to the Marine Corps Reserve’s 6th Engineer Support Battalion, 4th Force Service Support Group, Folsom, Pa.

July 8, 2004Army Spc. Shawn M. Davies, 22, of Aliquippa, died in Baghdad, Iraq, of a non-combat related illness. Davies was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

July 19, 2004Army Sgt. Dale T. Lloyd, 22, of Watsontown, died in Scandaria, Iraq, when multiple mortar rounds hit his forward operating base. Lloyd was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd

Infantry, 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York.

July 22, 2004Army Spc. Nicholas J. Zangara, 21, of Philadelphia, died July 24 in Tikrit, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his convoy vehicle. Zangara was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Infantry Division from Schweinfurt, Germany.

August 13, 2004 Army 1st Lt. Neil Anthony Santoriello, 24, of Verona, died in Khalidiyah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his mounted reconnaissance patrol vehicle. Santoriello was assigned to 1st Battalion, 34th Armor, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.

August 26, 2004Marine Corps Cpl. Barton R. Humlhanz, 23, of Hellertown, died from injuries received due to enemy action in Babil Province, Iraq. He was assigned to Marine Expeditionary Unit Service Support Group 24, 24th MEU, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

September 19, 2004Army Sgt. Brandon E. Adams, 22, of Hollidaysburg, died at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital in Washington, D.C. Adams died from head injuries he received in Fullujah, Iraq, on Feb. 16, when a grenade exploded as he was clearing a house. Adams was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.

September 20, 2004Army Spc. Joshua J. Henry, 21, of Avonmore died in Tikrit, Iraq, of injuries sustained when his convoy was attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire in Sharqat, Iraq. Henry was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

September 25, 2004Army National Guard Spc. Clifford L. Moxley, Jr., 51, of New Castle, died in Baghdad, Iraq, of non-combat related injuries. Moxley was assigned to the Army National Guard’s 2nd Battalion, 103rd Armor Regiment, Berwick, Pa.

September 27, 2004Army Spc. Gregory A. Cox, 21, of Carmichaels, died in Balad, Iraq, when his military vehicle was unintentionally run off the road by a civilian vehicle causing it to rollover. Cox was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment, 1st Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

September 30, 2004Army Spc. Rodney A. Jones, 21, of Philadelphia, died in Baghdad, Iraq, when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device exploded near his dismounted patrol. Jones was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

October 8, 2004 Army Sgt. Andrew W. Brown, 22, of Pleasant Mount died in Baghdad, Iraq of injuries sustained Oct. 1 when his patrol when his patrol was struck by an improvised explosive device. Brown was assigned to the Army’s 1st Battalion, 509th Infantry, Fort Polk, La.

October 11, 2004Army Pfc. Aaron J. Rusin, 19, of Johnstown, died in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained Oct. 10 when his military vehicle came under fire from enemy forces. Rusin was assigned to the 44th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Howze, Korea.

October 13, 2004 Army Lt. Col. Mark P. Phelan, 44, of Salford Township, died in Mosul, Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Phelan was assigned to the Army Reserve’s 416th Civil Affairs Battalion, Morristown, Pa.

November 9, 2004Marine Corps Sgt. Lonny D. Wells, 29, of Vandergrift, Pa., died as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

November 11, 2004Army Staff Sgt, Sean P. Huey, 29, of Fredericktown, Pa., died in Habbaniyah, Iraq, when his unit was on patrol and a vehicle-borne improvised device detonated near his HMMWV. Huey was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Greaves, Korea.

November 18, 2004Army Sgt. Joseph M. Nolan, 27, of Philadelphia, Pa., died in Fallujah, Iraq, when his unit was on patrol and an improvised device detonated near his up-armored HMMWV. Nolan was assigned the 312th Military Intelligence Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

November 22, 2004Marine Corps Cpl. Michael R. Cohen, 23, of Jacobus, Pa., died as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

December 9, 2004Marine Corps Cpl. Kyle J. Renehan, 21, of Oxford, Pa., died in Kaiserslautern, Germany, from injuries received Nov. 29, 2004, as a result of enemy action in Babil Province, Iraq. He was assigned to Marine Air Control Squadron 2, Marine Air Control Group 28, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.

December 21, 2004Army Sgt. 1st Class Paul D. Karpowich, 30, of Bridgeport, Pa., died in Mosul, Iraq, when his dining facility was attacked. Karpowich was assigned to the Army Reserve’s 2nd

Battalion, 390th Infantry Regiment, Webster, N.Y.

January 11, 2005Army Spc. Michael J. Smith, 24, of Media, Pa., died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when his military vehicle was hit by a rocket propelled grenade. Smith was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Koch, 23, a graduate of Parkland High School, of West Henrietta, N.Y., died in Taji, Iraq, from injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. It was his second deployment to Iraq, returning in January. Koch was assigned to the 70th Engineer Battalion, Fort Riley, Kansas.

May 8, 2005Marine Corps Sgt. Michael A. Marzano, 28, of Greenville, Pa., died as the result of an explosion caused by suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations in Hadithah, Iraq. He was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve’s 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division. Marzano’s company is based in Phoenix, Ariz. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Chris Rolan, 23, who pleaded guilty to unpremeditated murder and other charges in a deal with prosecutors. Paytas and Rolan had been arguing when Rolan shot Paytas four times, according to witness testimony. Paytas was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Troops Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Ga.

Shaffer, 23, of Mont Alto, Pa., died at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, of injuries sustained on Nov. 13 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated nearby. He was a Pennsylvania Army National Guard soldier assigned to the 28th Division Support Command, Harrisburg.

April 5, 2007Army Spc. Jason A. Shaffer, 28, Derry, Pa., died in Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when a vehicle-born improvised explosive device detonated near his Bradley Fighting Vehicle. February 5, 2008Army Sgt. Timothy R. Van Orman, 24 of Port Matilda, Pa., died of wounds from an improvised explosive device in Al Muqdadiyah, Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Fort Drum, NY.

Feb. 17, 2008Army Cpl. (Spc.) Luke S. Runyan, 21 of Spring Grove, Pa., died of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his dismounted patrol using small-arms fire in Diyala Province, Iraq. Runyan was posthumously promoted to corporal and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion 23rd Infantry regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.
