May it be a happy and healthy year for all of our members and their families! I hope your holidays were spent in the comfort of family and friends. I begin this new year feeling extraordinarily blessed. We have so many wonderful members who volunteered their time and talents in the past year for our club…not only for the financial success but also for the enjoyment of their fellow members. Many of our members frequently thank me for all I do…and I am quick to let them know that it is the hard work of many that make the club successful. We are a volunteer driven organization. This is a large facility to keep up, with many events and activities happening week in and week out. I frequently “put out the call” to a group of members who consistently answer the call to help…whether we need help with an event or to clean out the shed…put away the patio furniture…you name it, they come. But that group is small and could use a boost. Consider giving of your time this year. Maybe you have a particular talent or skill. Maybe you are looking to meet other members. We need you! Contact me if you are interested in volunteering for random events, projects or tasks. I can add you the list. It’s a new year…make a resolution to become more involved. I promise you’ll gain more than you give! Congratulations to Eileen Malone Sott, the 2016 Grand Marshal for the Greater Hartford St. Patrick’s Day Parade! Eileen hails from Rineen, Co. Clare, Ireland and has been a longtime member of this Society. She has held several officer positions in addition to volunteering in many capacities through the years and was an or- ganizer of the first Hartford Feis in 1965. Eileen was also the 2015 Town Marshal for East Hartford. Congratulations to Biagio “Billy” Ciotto, the 2016 Person of the Year for the Parade. Billy, best known for his tenure as a State Senator, has been a longtime friend and champion of the Parade. I don’t think there has been a reception or fundraiser he has ever missed in the towns he represented through the years. This and that… The days and weeks leading up to Christmas were very busy ones at the Irish American Home Society. The day after Thanksgiving, we held our 3rd annual Lights of Love Christmas Tree Lighting and Carol Sing and what a lovely event it was! The sidewalks in front of the club were aglow with the light of luminaries lit in memory or honor of our loved ones. The carol sing was led by musician Jeff Conlon and at 5:30 p.m. all assembled went outside for the tree lighting. Sr. Peggy Evans read a lovely prayer, a special prayer for a tree lighting, and the tree was lit to the delight of the crowd. Jeff Conlon played Joyful, Joyful on the pipes in celebration. The tree lighting was followed by a reading of the names from our Lights of Love Scroll of Honor…a very moving portion of the program…while the names appeared on the television screens throughout the pub. Jeff then led the crowd in singing all our favorite Christmas songs, including a rowdy rendition of the 12 Days of Christmas. If you haven’t seen Jeff perform at the club, he is very entertaining and really gets the crowd going. Grace and Sarah Downes, the grand-daughters of Tom & Rita Downes, delighted the audience with their talents…Grace sang Silent Night in the Irish language and Sarah played the guitar. Some very talented Irish dancers performed: Lauren Tenney and Maggie McDonald (daughters of Rick & Megan Tenney and Josh & Megan McDonald, respectively). They had the audience clapping along and cheering loudly! It was truly a memorable evening…if you couldn’t join us this year, mark your calendars for November 25, 2016…this really is an event for the whole family. A very lovely way to kick off the holiday season. Many thanks to the volunteers who helped to decorate the club that morning. Three Christmas trees inside the building along with yards and yards of garland strung throughout the pub and lounge. Thanks to Sheila Dupuis Green, Jenn Hedges, Colleen Kissane, Pat Mahoney, Eileen McGee, Myles McGee, Charlie Murray, Ann Purcell Murray, Erin Mulcahy and Dan O’Connell. And the beautiful tree in the front of our building (generously donated each year by Kevin Foley of Liberty Landscapes, LLC) was decorated by Myles McGee and Charlie Murray. Special thanks to our Webmaster, Todd Barry, for putting together the beautiful Scroll of Honor. Many thanks to our Events Committee for all the planning and work that went into this event, and last, but not least, thanks to our Pub Grub crew who worked very hard to keep the crowd fed…they had a record

night in sales (Peter Hart, Sana Hart, Elizabeth O’Leary, Ed Perkins, Terry Saunders and Allen Scarfone). On Friday, December 4th, we held our Member’s Christmas Party with a traditional ham dinner that included colcannon, parsnips & carrots, turnip and green beans almandine. The dinner received rave reviews and the atmosphere was lovely and festive. This meal was lovingly prepared by Cathy Barry, Lil Holleran, Eileen McGee, Ann Purcell Murray and Liz Saunders…with support from Barb Hedges, Jenn Hedges, Eileen Moore and Kathy Saimininkas in setting up, cleaning up, and scrubbing all the pots and pans that come with cooking a dinner for over 120 members. We had a ball preparing this event and the abundance of compliments

was overwhelming…another “not to be missed” event for next year! The following day, Saturday, December 5th, the club was crawling with volunteers preparing for Christmas Shopping Day. In the upstairs hall, our Wreath Chair, Ei-leen McGee, led a group of talented wreath, centerpiece and cemetery box designers who toiled away for most of the day. Many thanks to Margaret Burke, There-sa Doyle, Lil Holleran, Fran Keenan, Lynn Kuger, Ted Lloyd, Pat Mahoney, Pat Mangini, Kim McGee, Mackenzie McGee, Myles McGee, Betty Mohan, Mary Ellen Moore, Ann Purcell Murray, Russ Nelson, Cathy O’Connor and Dottie Silvestri. The fresh and artificial wreaths and other creations were absolutely stun-ning, with handmade bows and chockfull of greens and holly. Just gorgeous and so fragrant! In the downstairs kitchen, Theresa Doyle and Eileen Moore made brown bread for the Irish breakfast held the next day, while Ann Purcell Murray (Club Table Chair), Pat Mangini, Eileen Moore and Dan O’Connell set up the displays of Irish products and goods the club sells. And running up and down, here and there was Christmas Shopping Day Chair Kathy Saimininkas, attending to

every detail for our vendors and volunteers. On Sunday, December 6th, the sun was shining brightly and the air nearly felt like spring (as someone mentioned…we’ve had St. Patrick’s Days with co lder weather) as we welcomed hundreds of members and shoppers to our club for Christmas Shopping Day. The day began with an Irish breakfast in our pub. Guests were welcomed by our servers Sheila Dupuis Green, Kellie Saunders and Allen Scarfone; and served scones along with piping hot cups of coffee and tea by Eileen K. Moore and Matthew and Shari Phillips. The kitchen crew was hopping (Justin Hart, Peter Hart, Sana Hart, Jeffrey Reynolds and Terry Saunders) and the breakfast and homemade brown bread was thoroughly enjoyed by over a hundred guests. Lunch service began at noon, with soup and the Toasted Specials flying out the door through the afternoon. Many thanks to my nephew Patrick Kennedy who made swift lunch deliveries to the vendors upstairs and in our pub, and to the kitchen crew of Joe Kennedy, Eileen K. Moore, Charlie Murray and Kathy Saimininkas. As shoppers made their way along the front of the building, they were cheerily greeted by Myles McGee as he sat by the turf fire, chatting with friends old and new. The front of the building held beautiful displays of the many wreaths, centerpieces and cemetery boxes made the previous day. Eileen McGee, Lil Holleran, and Tom Fitzgerald were happy the day warmed up and they ended up selling out of everything but a few wreaths. Meanwhile, Ann Purcell Murray and her team of volunteers were busy at the club table selling all the special Irish Christ-mas candy, biscuits and the like along with Irish groceries and club apparel. Thanks to Karen Breen, Rick Breen, Pam Mahoney, Pat Mangini, Margaret Mulcahy, Marigrace Riley, Sean Riley and Maureen Skowronek. The club table, as always, was quite a busy spot. All of our vendors reported having a great day and they look forward to the great hospitality they receive when participating in this event each year. Thank you, Kathy Saimininkas, for all your hard work! It was a tremen-dous day for our club! Special thanks to our Permittee, Dan O’Connell, who travelled to New York to pick up our Irish food and candy order when it wasn’t shipped

out in time…and for all the other tasks you do for the events we hold at our club! The Children’s Christmas Party was held on Sunday, December 13th, with Santa Claus arriving on a fire truck with sirens screaming and lights blinking (thanks Bruce Motowidlak), to the delight of the children and parents in attendance (and a few grandparents, too). Everyone enjoyed a pancake breakfast prepared by Peter Hart, Sana Hart and Terry Saunders. Many thanks to Children’s Events Chairs Sarah Moran and Megan Tenney, along with their elves Brian Moran, Devin Moran, Liam Moran, J.D. Tenney, Lauren Tenney and Rick Tenney…and Jenn Hedges, Eileen K. Moore and Ann Purcell Murray, too! Lots of kids sported cute red reindeer noses (courtesy of Eileen K. Moore) and enjoyed the holiday limbo contest. Watching the wonder in the eyes of the children is one of the most heartwarm-

ing times of the season for me! Many thanks to Andrew Fotta, who takes the pictures of the kids with Santa…and always donates a portion of the proceeds back to the club or to the charity receiv-ing the toys. This year, My Sister’s Place in Hartford, was chosen to receive the toys. My Sister’s Place is shelter focused on getting women and children into per-manent homes and ending their chronic homelessness I delivered a car load of gorgeous toys (thanks to the generous families who attended the party), along with gift cards (many thanks to the Retirees Club) and $200 in cash (thanks, Andrew Fotta). The volunteers at My Sister’s Place were thrilled at the bounty they re-ceived. One volunteer told me that they will have about 80 kids in residence this Christmas, which made me sad that Christmas would be spent in this facility, but grateful that the generosity of our club could help make it a brighter Christmas for these kids. Another volunteer told me that these toys are the kind of toys these kids only dream of receiving. They thanked me profusely for the generosity of the club…and in turn, I thanked them for the good work they do. It was a very proud mo-

ment to represent this special club. God bless all of you who make it so special…xo.
